April 8, 2010 On behalf of the Board of Directors, we welcome you to the third production of Michael Childers’ “One Night Only” to benefit the men, women and children served by Jewish Family Service of the Desert (JFS). JFS helps people in the Coachella Valley who belong to every possible religion. Our services are also color blind, lifestyle blind, and gender blind. JFS is there to help those in need with counseling, advice and support. Your contribution tonight can help put food on someone’s table, clothes on his back or a roof over her head. When trauma or tragedy strikes, JFS is there. This night would not have been possible without the efforts of some very special people: Helene Galen, Barbara Keller, Harold Matzner, Barbara Fromm, and Sherry Schor. Their vision, determination and leadership have been critical to the event’s remarkable success. Finally, we gratefully acknowledge the talents and contributions of Michael Childers, the man who first brought “One Night Only” to the desert eight years ago, and whose enormous creativity keeps bringing us new joy, excitement and surprises. Thank you to all the performers who have so unselfishly volunteered their time and their talents to make this a truly unforgettable event. Last, but certainly not least, to all the individuals who worked or volunteered behind the scenes, we offer our deepest appreciation and sincere gratitude. Warmest regards,

VON SMITH Von Smith was most recently seen on season 8 of American Idol as one of the top 17 finalists. Von began singing at age 5 at his mother’s students' piano recitals, and soon after, he was doing local theatre in Kansas City. By age 12, Von began exploring soul music. At age 13, Von began performing in his new soulful style, and made it all the way to the finals of Ed McMahon's competition Next Big Star. Back home in Kansas City, Von performed "And I Am Telling You" from Dreamgirls for a local chamber of commerce. Not thinking it would lead to anything of significance, Von posted his performance on YouTube. Three months and nearly 400,000 fans later, Von's performance had garnered him national attention, including features on MTV and BET as one of the first young singers to emerge from obscurity through the tremendous YouTube phenomenon. Rosie O'Donnell invited him to perform on The View, and shortly after, he signed a record deal with Akon's record label, Kon Live Distribution. NITA WHITAKER It's difficult to put Nita into one category. Graced by gospel, trained in opera, honed in pop, Nita's voice is a remarkable instrument that's difficult to define. But when you hear her power chops and sweet bell tones, you know you are in the presence of greatness. A former Miss Louisiana, Nita brought her southern roots, charm and talent to Los Angeles where her incredible voice carried her to perform on the stage, screen and television. She has appeared on TV shows such as Fresh Prince, and includes a performance in movie, The Bodyguard in her many credits. With a vibrant and dynamic stage presence, she has been the guest performer at The Freedom Awards honoring Oprah Winfrey, sang duets with Andrea Bocelli and also toured with jazz trumpeter Chris Botti. Having David Foster as one of her mentors, she has performed with countless celebrities including Barbara Streisand, Faith Hill, Celine Dion, Stevie Wonder and Yolanda Adams. Nita continues to hone her song writing skills as well as record and perform. Recently she performed highlights from Porgy and Bess with the Chorale Bel Canto Symphony and performed with the Long Beach Symphony with legendary Ben Vereen. Thursday, April 8, 2010

THINKING OUTSIDE THE EVENING!

As we sit here tonight in this beautiful McCallum Theater, preparing to enjoy, yet again, a wonderful production put together by Michael Childers, we are reminded of all the dedicated hours and hard work it takes to plan an event like this. This year, our thanks goes to our friends, the Co-Chairs, the Honorary Chairs and, in retrospect, to all the past Chairs and Co-Chairs that work so hard to put on this special evening together every year–all of whom we are so proud to call our friends. But, let’s step outside “One Night Only” for a moment, and reflect upon

what this night really means….. Each and everyone one of you attending tonight have made it possible for Jewish Family Service to feed, cloth, and give shelter to so many people in need. What a wonderful gift to give in these difficult times! This is what this evening is really all about!! So, we say thank you to all of you who have made ONO such a successful evening. We are proud to be a part of such a giving community! Mel & Dorothy Lefkowitz
