DESERT

April 18, 2012 On behalf of the Board of Directors of Jewish Family Service of the Desert (JFS), we welcome you to the fifth annual production of One Night Only, presented by the incomparable Michael Childers. We are truly humbled by the outpouring of support from the community for this event and for JFS. As the floodlights shine tonight on some of the brightest talents from Broadway and Hollywood, they also illuminate the critical services of JFS. Your contributions this evening are already making a difference in the lives of more than 2,000 men, women and children who depend on JFS for support. Local school children will receive counseling to succeed in school and homebound seniors can maintain their independence through supportive services. Your support tonight means that individuals and families have access to low cost mental health counseling, teens can receive substance abuse counseling, and seniors don’t have to wait in 100 degree heat for a bus ride to the doctor. This night would not have been possible without the efforts of some very special people: Annette Bloch, Helene Galen, Barbara Keller, Harold Matzner, Barbara Fromm, and Sherry Schor. Their vision, determination and leadership have been critical to the event’s remarkable success. Of course, thank you to Michael for creating this magical event for the past five years. We are extremely grateful to all the performers who have so unselfishly volunteered their time and their talents. Last, but certainly not least, to all the individuals who worked or volunteered behind the scenes, we offer our deepest appreciation and sincere gratitude.

Warmest regards,

DON LEVY

President Board of Directors

MICHELLE Anstadt

Executive Director

Annette bloch HONORARY CO-CHAIR

Philanthropist. Arts patron. Cancer survivor. Annette Bloch is all of those. But family remains her life’s most important work. There now are four generations that include seven greatgrandchildren – a clan of 28 and counting. Born Annette Modell in Philadelphia, Annette moved to Kansas City, Missouri, when she married Richard A. Bloch, co-founder of H&R Block Inc. They raised their daughters in Kansas City. She has been active in cancer issues since Dick’s lung cancer diagnosis in 1978. Two years later, after his cure, they created the R.A. Bloch Cancer Foundation and spent the next 24 years working tirelessly on behalf of cancer patients worldwide. When Dick died in 2004 of heart failure, they had been married for 58 years. Since then, Annette has presided over the foundation, whose national hotline (800-433-0464) and website (www.blochcancer.org) provide hope and information on what to do after being diagnosed. The foundation also has helped create 24 cancer survivor parks in the United States and Canada. A breast cancer diagnosis in 2008 made Annette’s cancer work even more personal. After her gifts to the breast imaging, blood and marrow transplant and radiation oncology programs at the University of Kansas Hospital, where she was treated, the hospital named the Richard and Annette Bloch Cancer Care Pavilion and the Richard and Annette Bloch Radiation Oncology Pavilion. An earlier gift had established the hospital’s Richard and Annette Bloch Heart Rhythm Center. Rancho Mirage has been Annette’s second home since 1990, and she spends her winters there. She is on the board of trustees and is a major supporter of the Palm Springs Art Museum. She also is a staunch supporter of Desert AIDS Project, Jewish Family Service of the Desert, and the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Helene Galen HONORARY CO-CHAIR

Helene Galen was born Helene Caro, in England, and she moved with her family to Los Angeles in 1958. She met her husband, Lou Galen and they were married in 1975. Helene had an interesting career in California, working as an Executive at Frederick’s of Hollywood, where she worked both in their advertising department and retail chain. Taking her retail experience with her, she later became vice-president and comptroller for Continental Distributors, a retail jewelry chain. While serving on the Executive Committee of the board of Tamarisk Country Club, she wrote the unique history of the early days in Palm Springs. She is currently on the Board of Trustees of the Palm Springs Art Museum, the McCallum Theater, the International Film Festival and is now taking the helm of the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center Board, as its president. A Letter from the Producer We have finally brought the fabulous Gershwin’s – the genius of George and Ira – to the McCallum Theatre for One Night Only. This has been a dream of mine for several years, to bring together their great Hollywood and Broadway songs, along with their greatest achievement, Porgy and Bess. Working with our director, Calvin Remsberg, and our musical director, Ron Abel has been a constant delight this year because of the veritable riches in the Gershwin catalog. Many thanks to Jewish Family Service of the Desert for their constant support and for the terrific work of the brilliant co-chairs: Harold Matzner, Annette Bloch, Barbara Keller, Helene Galen, Barbara Fromm and Sherry Schor. The show would not be possible without the extraordinary generosity of our new and returning sponsors, including Wells Fargo, which has served as “Presenting Sponsor” for every One Night Only production. Also, my gratitude to the great performers, musicians, and to my crew and volunteers of over 40 dedicated people who have made this year’s Gershwin show a reality. I hope tonight’s show is the best One Night Only ever. Sincerely yours,

Michael Childers Producer

Bless you

for all that you do for those who have come to depend on Jewish Family Service of the Desert.
