Let’s Do Lunch! Program Brings Homebound Seniors Together In the three years since Lillian, age 81, moved to the desert her life has changed dramatically. After losing most of the sight in both eyes, she is no longer able to drive. She rarely leaves home and has felt increasingly isolated. Now a new JFS program provided in collaboration with the Joslyn Center is starting to brighten her life. Story continues inside

JFS Patron Party to be Hosted by Donna MacMillan on December 9th The 11th Annual JFS Patron Party will be hosted by Donna MacMillan on Monday, December 9, 2013 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. The event is chaired by Carol Fragen and Barbara Fromm Story continues inside
JFS To Honor Michael Childers At Gala Luncheon on March 6, 2014 In 2007, Michael Childers called his friend Barbara Keller, who was then a member of the JFS Board of Directors. He asked her if JFS would be interested in having him produce his popular “One Night Only” event on behalf of JFS. In the six years since that eventful telephone call, “One Night Only” has generated more than $1 million in proceeds to benefit the services of JFS. “Hundreds of men, women and children have received critically-needed counseling, senior care, and emergency assistance services because of Michael’s work with JFS,” says Barbara, who serves as Honorary Co-Chair of “One Night Only” along with Annette Bloch, Helene Galen and Harold Matzner. Barbara Fromm and Terri Ketover are event co-chairs. JFS will honor Michael for his work on behalf of JFS at a special gala luncheon to be held on Thursday, March 6, 2014. The location will be announced shortly. The event will feature special guest performers and presenters. Opportunities for tickets, sponsorships and advertising will be offered starting this fall. Michael was already an internationally-renowned photographer when he began producing events to raise money for charitable causes in the early 1990’s. Since then, he has raised more than $14 million for nonprofit organizations. Michael’s photographs of some of the world’s most legendary celebrities have graced countless magazine covers. Letter from ED GUBMAN Dear Friends, The Board, staff and volunteers of JFS wish you happy and healthy High Holidays. For you who are returning to the desert, we hope your travels are safe and easy. Our mission at JFS is clear and constant. It is Tikun Olam, repair of the world. Tikun Olam is one of the highest values of Jewish living, indeed of all ethical living. Its appeal is so strong because it cuts across religious and political differences and unites us in the common cause of making the world a little better every day. When you dig deeper into the Biblical commentary on Tikun Olam, you learn it has a twofold meaning. First, the rabbis tell us we Jews should use Tikun Olam as a path to build a model society that can be “a light to other nations.” Second, they say that Tikun Olam compels us to reach out to the larger community and do good works. This double meaning meshes perfectly with the services and programs we offer through JFS. It’s why we focus so many of our efforts, with great support from the Jewish Federation, on Jewish families and seniors. It’s also why we reach out to the Coachella Valley with our counseling, drug abuse, food assistance and senior care services, among many others. Tikun Olam is what motivates all of us who work or volunteer at JFS. I know it also inspires you to support us financially, and we thank you so much for your generosity. CLet’s h iDol dLunch! ers Sponsored by a generous grant from the Houston Family Foundation, “Let’s Do Lunch!” provides homebound seniors with an afternoon of activities twice monthly. Participants are picked up from their homes by JFS volunteers and brought to the Joslyn Center in Palm Desert. They enjoy light exercises they can do in their chairs, games, performances, informative workshops, and the opportunity to socialize with others. The Joslyn Center provides lunch for participants.
The program helps reduce stress, isolation, depression, and loneliness. By engaging participants in activities outside the home, they experience increased mental stimulation and greater self-esteem.
Tribute
Isadora, age 91, feels this program has “opened up a new world” for her. She is homebound, cannot drive and is sole caregiver for her 51 year old disabled daughter. “It is a God send,” says Isadora. “Everyone is so nice and social.” After receiving a makeover at a recent “Salon Day” sponsored by the International School of Beauty, Lillian joked, “I am all dolled up and will have to find someone to make out with.” She credits the program with helping build her confidence. Richard, age 82, lost his wife last year to complications from Alzheimer’s. Since then, he has not spent much time out of the home. He appreciates the program for its versatility and for getting him out of the house regularly. “You do something a little different every time,” he explains. Jane, Lillian and Veronique

JFS Awarded $75,000 Grant by Desert Healthcare Foundation & City of Palm Springs This summer, JFS was awarded a $75,000 grant to implement the new KidsFirst Healthy Life Project, an antibullying and drug resistance program. The curriculum will be taught to 1,800 fifth grade students at elementary schools in Palm Springs Unified School District. The grant is funded by The City of Palm Springs and the Desert Healthcare Foundation, in partnership with President Clinton’s Health Matters Initiative. It is designed to support the health and wellness priorities identified in the Initiative’s “Coachella Valley Blueprint for Action.” Beginning in September, this cuttingedge early prevention program will equip fifth grade students with lifelong skills for assertive behavior, setting positive goals and resisting peer pressure that can lead to early drug use. The new program is an expansion of our highly successful KidsFirst counseling program that provides in-school counseling at 16 local schools.
