A note from the event chairs In the past, it seemed we all knew someone with depression. Someone else who was struggling, someone other than ourselves. That is no longer the case. It should come as no surprise that the pandemic has led to increasing rates of depression. We’ve all been affected by it to some degree. And while there seems to be a light at the end of this tunnel, we will all be feeling the aftereffects of the pandemic for years to come. Fortunately, Jewish Family Service will be here to help us through. Helping people with their mental health is just one of the many ways that Jewish Family Service serves our community. Tonight, the agency is shining a light on this topic, albeit through a lighthearted lens, thanks to comedian Gary Gulman. With humor, vulnerability and honesty, Gary destigmatizes mental illness, normalizes treatment and offers hope. For more than 90 years, Jewish Family Service has been working to help older adults safely age in place, guide families through unexpected hardships, and provide counseling for those facing difficult life transitions. Thanks to your support this evening, Jewish Family Service will be able to continue helping the most vulnerable...and continue serving as the heart of a stronger community. With much appreciation,

About Reva Stocker An inspiration to all who knew her, Reva Stocker z’’l was an active member of the Detroit Jewish community and a fierce advocate in promoting strong, healthy families and preventing domestic abuse. She supported the JFS Windows program, which established the agency’s domestic abuse intervention and prevention services, along with an endowment in 1994 for the Reva Stocker Lecture Series for educational programs on the significant issues impacting families today.

Jewish Family Service is proud to honor Reva Stocker’s legacy and commitment to enriching the lives of others through this important lecture series.

Thank you Diane & Bill Goldstein and Julie & Jason Page Jewish Family Service appreciates your help in shining a light on mental health in our community. It is thanks to the dedication and involvement of people like you that allows us to continue providing critical services to those in need. Thank you for all you have done to make our Spotlight event a success.

Jewish Family Service is honored to serve the over 15,000 people each year who come to us for help. Each one has their own story, their own difficult journey, their own needs they are struggling to meet.

MEET BERNIE The critical services we provide make a huge impact , in their lives. and are just three examples of how JFS has made a difference in the lives of our community members.

Bernie Daniel Claudia

Bernie is a Holocaust survivor whose children live out of state and hadn’t been able to visit since COVID. Once they felt comfortable traveling, they flew out to see him. And it became clear that their father’s needs had increased. Bernie had been relying on Jewish Family Service for transportation to his doctors’ appointments as well as for Kosher Meals on Wheels. But his kids noticed a severe decline. His home was in disarray. And he was very lonely. They decided to reach out to JFS for more help. JFS provided a personal emergency response system and home care services. For socialization, JFS connected Bernie with a friendly phone caller who checks in with him weekly to discuss their shared love of baseball. WE HELPED BERNIE WITH THESE SERVICES: Geriatric Care Management | Transportation Volunteer Services | Assistive Technology Home Care | Kosher Meals on Wheels

MEET DANIEL

MEET CLAUDIA

Daniel is a single father of two boys. He was a talented chef…before the pandemic hit. Mandated shutdowns put him out of work and his kids out of school. With both kids attending classes virtually, Daniel had to purchase a second computer. He was able to pick up some part-time work at a local retailer, but his reduced paycheck meant he struggled to put food on the table. He fell behind on his bills. And he feared losing his home. Until he called Jewish Family Service.

Claudia is a recently divorced mom of three kids. While she knows that divorcing her husband was the right thing for her and her kids, she is still grieving the loss of her marriage. She has enjoyed a successful career as a creative director for a well-respected ad agency, but has recently been struggling to stay focused on her work. Her 12-year-old has been experiencing some anxiety since the divorce and her schoolwork is suffering. Claudia isn’t sure how to help. So she called Jewish Family Service.

JFS helped Daniel apply for benefits, which meant he no longer worried about feeding his family. We connected him with resources to help with his mortgage, job search, and to make sure the lights stayed on. Working with his social worker, they developed a plan for financial stability. WE HELPED DANIEL WITH THESE SERVICES: Case Management Services Benefits Assistance | Housing Resources Emergency Financial Assistance

JFS helped Claudia by connecting her with a therapist who could help her develop the critical tools for coping with this life change. Her daughter met with the JFS social worker housed in her school and together they worked on managing her anxiety. WE HELPED CLAUDIA WITH THESE SERVICES: Counseling | Youth and school-based services
