L AU R A N U G E N T ART AUCTION CHAIRPERSON On Behalf of the Board of Directors and Membership, I welcome and thank you, our Sponsors and Patrons who have come together tonight to support and celebrate the Kansas City Artists Coalition 34th Annual Art Auction. Please join me in expressing gratitude to the artists who have elected to participate in this sole annual fundraiser of KCAC by donating the results of their work, passion and time. We are eager to honor their contributions by making this auction a rousing success. Each of the extraordinary works you will see this evening will be sold to further the mission of KCAC: to promote visual arts awareness in Kansas City and the surrounding region, and support the professional growth of artists. In its 40 years, this core mission has not changed. In response to revolutions in communication, KCAC has endeavored to help artists keep up with innovations that offer them opportunity to find and sustain audiences for their work. Supporters of the Coalition have contributed to services in education, collaborative learning and exhibition opportunities. Ongoing professional development offered at low or no cost to members and non-members alike includes engaging experts in artwork imaging, the crafting of artist statements, career archiving, social media strategizing, sales and more. KCAC’s unique gallery spaces offer solo exhibition venues to artists who are seeking a place to show new lines of work, installations and performance. Juried exhibitions such as the River Market Regional and Undergraduate Student Show and the members’ “One Night Stand” build peer relationships, increase the profile of artists in their community and offer sales opportunities. In response to a decade-long building boom, KCAC has partnered with the River Market community to raise awareness of the Coalition and its work. These efforts culminated in a first-ever Block Party on August 12, 2016 which celebrated its 40th Anniversary and was attended by 750 people, friends new and old. Mayor Sly James proclaimed August 12th, 2016 a day of celebration for the 40th anniversary of the Kansas City Artists Coalition, the oldest artistcentered visual art organization in Kansas City. My life’s work as a self employed, full time artist has been directly impacted by the efforts of the KCAC. I arrived in Kansas City 13 years ago with a BFA in painting, a disciplined studio practice and exhibition resume. What I lacked were relationships in my new arts community. It was an intimidating time, walking into rooms, usually unknown and alone. Thanks to the internet, I discovered the KCAC and began simply volunteering time. I helped install exhibitions with artists and staff. I poured drinks at openings, patched walls and licked envelopes. I attended workshops, artist talks, informational sessions even if they were remote to my practice. After a year or so I was no longer entering rooms a stranger. Through the Coalition, I met dozens of artists who became peers and friends. We were reaching out to each other, sharing opportunities and being supportive faces in the crowd. All these years later, I serve on the Board as VP but I am still an individual volunteer, eager to be a contributor to our KCAC community. My longest relationships in Kansas City are those begun at 201 Wyandotte. When I am asked for advice by young artists or those who are coming back to their art careers after a prolonged break, I recommend that their first stop should be the Kansas City Artists Coalition.
pAUL tYLER ART AUCTION HONORARY CHAIRPERSON Paul Tyler knows well what the collaborative efforts of our local arts organizations has meant for artists like me. Paul’s career as Grants Director at ArtsKC assisted countless artists in building long term, sustainable art careers. His advice and support elevated the work and profiles of artists to a national audience. In addition to his professional guidance, he is a dedicated booster. Paul and his wife Laura, never fail to attend the events of artists whose work he has helped shape. They are a dream audience for us all. We are deeply grateful for Paul’s Honorary Chairmanship this year. And speaking of a long term, sustained art career, Jane Booth has led one as admirable and energetic as her paintings. Jane’s contribution of “Essential” from her Shell Series, is the prized 2017 Auction Sealed Bid item. This painting brings vibrating color and light into our galleries and speaks to her great generosity toward fellow artists at all stages of professional life. Jane’s continued participation at KCAC in juried group and solo exhibits speaks volumes to the importance of this organization to an artist who is also recognized, exhibited and Photo: Julie Denesha collected well beyond Kansas City. On behalf of our Board of Directors, I must recognize the tireless efforts of our dedicated staff: Executive Director Janet Simpson, Assistant Director Marissa Starke and Executive Assistant Erin Hall. There is no challenge that they will not undertake. Every idea to improve the work of the Coalition is met with enthusiasm and accomplished with grace. They inspire the best in our legions of volunteer helpers who are often anonymous in their efforts to get KCAC ready for you. Please read their names in this catalog. Along with you, they are making this event possible. I hope you find many intriguing items tonight and exercise your bidding number often. I can tell you from experience that you will find yourself proudly proclaiming how you have added to or even started your art collection while supporting your arts organization now and into the future. Thank you for being here.
— Laura Nugent

kansas city artists coalition The Kansas City Artists Coalition’s exhibitions explore the diversity of expression that shape contemporary culture, art, and ideas. KCAC is a space for innovative and experimental art, which does not readily lend itself to commercial venues. KCAC also aggressively supports and embraces local and regional artists’ work. Opening March 3, 2017
ADA KOCH Ada started this work with the challenge of depicting love, violence and loss in a credible, affecting, and even beautiful way. Through these works, she shares fears, questions, and very personal emotions. artwork is about layering – layering in the process, and layers of time passing depicted in the images. The contemporary scenes are done in bright oil paints and oil pastels, or sometimes with black silhouettes, on top of the acrylic base.
AMY WRIGHT Amy defines her work as escapism—both the act of painting and the result: the paintings themselves. Each painting includes some indication that productive, maybe intelligent, beings have intervened. Sometimes, the evidence is explicit. Occasionally, it is a subtly placed clue. The beings are absent. Their absence is a nod to decay and speaks to the beauty in the abandoned. The environments in Wright’s work are inspired by a variety of subjects: ancient structures, natural phenomena, distant places, even scientific documentaries.
RACHEL MINDRUP Portraits have always had a powerful grasp on Mindrup’s imagination. It is the idea of duration - or earthly immortality - that gives such a mysterious interest to the painted portrait. Studying the history of portraiture techniques has allowed her the ability to begin to integrate those concepts into relevant contemporary narratives. Mindrup’s son Henry’s diagnosis has been the motivation behind her series of portraits “Many Faces of Neurofibromatosis (NF)”.

The Late Show is a favorite venue for local artists who appreciate Tom's no nonsense approach to showing and selling work. "I'm really proud I'm part of the art scene," Deatherage says. "And I really am part of it. I realize it, and it makes me feel good. I thought I was just kind of edgy, but I'm part of the scene. I'm 72, but I'm pushing hard.” MAY 12 - JUNE 23, 2017 VERONICA CECI photographs people interacting with smartphones, tablets and laptops, the images are mediated to emphasize the isolating effects of removing one’s attention from the immediate environment by focusing on these machines. The creation of the work does not involve any digital processes, each layer of each artwork is hand done, thereby contrasting the remove of the digital with the intimate of the body. ANSON THE ONRY is a multimedia artist combining his backgrounds in music, visual arts, writing and acting to create interactive installations and performances that make the viewer a part of the creative process. WHITE GOLD is an exhibition highlighting visiting Kansas City porcelain artists at the International Ceramics Studio (ICS) in Kecskemét, Hungary. This exhibit displays a culmination of works made while these artists lived and worked together during the summer of 2015. The exploration of new materials, methods and ideas allowed these artists to expand their bodies of work in new and unexpected ways. The works featured are made from high-quality, translucent, Hungarian porcelain using processes such as slip casting, hand building, and once-fire burnout. Concepts explore religion, architecture, the environment, anatomy and the occult. Artists include Emily Connell, Kim Lavonne, Cydney Ross, Melanie Sherman and Joseph Wullner.
