THIS IS WHY WE RIDE What is multiple sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis (or MS) is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system (CNS), which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. MS interrupts the flow of information from the brain to the body and stops people from moving.

Early and ongoing treatment with FDA-approved therapy can make a difference for people with multiple sclerosis. To learn about the options, individuals should talk to their health care professionals and contact the National MS Society at nationalMSsociety.org or 1-800-344-4867.

Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary from one person to another. Most people with MS learn to cope with the disease and continue to lead satisfying, productive lives. Today, new treatments and advances in research are giving new hope to people affected by the disease. Facts about MS • Approximately 400,000 Americans have MS. Because the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) does not require U.S. physicians to report new cases, and because symptoms can be completely invisible, the numbers can only be estimated. • Worldwide, MS affects about 2.1 million people. • Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, although MS has been diagnosed in individuals as young as two and as old as 75. • Nearly three times as many women as men have MS. • Studies suggest that genetic factors make certain individuals more susceptible than others, but there is no evidence that MS is directly inherited.

ABOUT THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA CHAPTER The Northern California Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society was founded in 1954 and has three offices providing programs and services to 12,000 people living with MS in a 40-county area. The Chapter is committed to helping the thousands of Northern Californians impacted by MS continue moving their lives forward. The Chapter raises funds locally to support the Society’s critical research initiatives and to provide hundreds of comprehensive support services and educational programs to people living with MS, their family and friends.

Where Your Fundraising Dollars Go

Your generosity makes it possible to help people affected by MS by funding cutting-edge research, driving change through advocacy, facilitating professional education, and providing programs and services that help people with MS and their families move their lives forward. Last year, the Northern California Chapter raised nearly $5 million to support these efforts, with 2/3 of these funds coming directly from special event revenue.

Our Mission: We mobilize people and resources to drive research for a cure and to address the challenges of everyone affected by MS.

>> We are moving research forward by relentlessly pursuing prevention, treatment and cure. >> We moving to reach out and respond to individuals, families, and communities living with MS. >> We are moving politicians and legislation to champion the needs of people with MS through activism, advocacy, and influence. >> We are moving to mobilize the millions of people who want to do something about MS now. FUNDRAISING HEADQUARTERS Fundraising 101 – everything you need to know

Fundraising is the most important part of your participation in Bike MS. All participants are required to raise a minimum of $350 and this minimum must be turned in by the day of the event in order to participate. Riders fundraise in a variety of ways and raised an average of $912 per cyclist in 2010.

A Personal Appeal

E-mail and traditional letter-writing campaigns are the most successful ways to raise money. You can solicit donations from a variety of sources such as: • family, neighbors, friends, college friends, sorority/fraternity members (holiday card list, e-mail, address book, social networking websites) • colleagues and business associates (e-mail, rolodex, or inter-office mail) The following are some ideas for a successful letter-writing campaign: • Always include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your letter if using regular mail. If you are contacting your donors via email, include your name and address to send pledges and/or include a link to your personal Waves to Wine fundraising webpage. Make it easy for your potential donors to respond to you. • Personalize your appeal by using familiar details about yourself, or your history riding in the Bike MS event. If the donor is not paying immediately by cash, check or credit card, specify a deadline in order to get donations to you in time to receive your prize. • Follow up with a note, e-mail or phone call to all those who have not responded. • Always send a thank you note when you receive a donation. After Bike MS, include details about your day, and maybe even a photo to your top donors. Your donors will be curious about your performance.

Tracking Offline Donations Some donors may prefer to make a donation in the form of a check. To have these donations appear on your personal Web page Honor Roll at www.wavestowine.org, follow the steps below. • Select “Enter Offline Donations” in your fundraising headquarters and enter any offline donations or pledges you receive. • When all checks are entered, print out a report and mail it with your checks to: National MS Society Bike MS: Waves to Wine 1700 Owens St, Suite 190 San Francisco, CA 94158 • Make sure your name is in the memo section of every check mailed.

Asking over the phone and in person are also great ways to make a personal appeal. Additional fundraising tips are available in Fundraising and Prizes section of the Bike MS website: www.wavestowine.org.

FUNDRAISING 101 1. SET A GOAL. All participants, regardless of age, are required to raise a minimum of $350 (separate from the registration fee) by the day of the event, September 17th, in order to receive your rider packet and bib – both are needed to participate. 2. SET UP YOUR ONLINE FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN by personalizing your personal fundraising page and sending e-mails from your account at www.wavesotwine.org. Upload photos and share why you are riding on both your website and in your e-mails. Go to your account to get started today! 3. KICK OFF YOUR FUNDRAISING by making a personal donation. When your donors see that you are financially committed to the cause, they will support it too. After you have sponsored yourself, ask everyone you know to support your efforts to join the movement towards a world free of MS.

How to Raise $1,000 in Just 9 Days (and earn an official Waves to Wine jersey)! 1. Donate $50 to yourself. 2. Ask 2 family members to donate $50. 3. Ask 10 friends to donate $20. 4. Ask 5 co-workers to donate $20. 5. Ask 5 neighbors to donate $20. 6. Ask 10 people from your religious institution to donate $10. (Better yet, see if you can make an announcement and do a mass collection.) 7. Ask your boss for a company donation of $50. (Ask if your company will match what you raise. For more info on matching gifts, visit the FAQ at www.wavestowine.org.) 8. Ask 5 companies that you deal with through work to donate $40. (Make sure to get permission to do this.) 9. Ask 4 businesses that you frequent—like your dry cleaner, hair stylist, favorite restaurant—to donate $25.

Total: $1,000!

Tip: To find your personal donation page, click on “Donate/ePledge” at www.wavestowine.org and search for your name.

FUNDRAISING 101 Plan a Fundraising Event

Fundraising events are a popular way for individuals and teams to meet their fundraising goals. Fundraising events may include silent auctions, poker nights, garage sales, bake sales, wine and cheese parties, and other house parties. Many local restaurants will host a fundraiser by contributing a percentage of their sales from a specific night to you. All they ask is that you invite all of your friends and family to dine at their establishment and tell them they are with you when they pay their bill. Contact your favorite eatery to see if they will contribute to your fundraising success! The Northern California Chapter can support your fundraising events in the following ways: • Sending a staff member to attend your event • Providing materials about multiple sclerosis and the National MS Society. It is important to remember to incorporate the mission of creating a world free of MS into your event. • Providing the Bike MS logo for your events (within our branding guidelines). Please note that all use of the Bike MS or Society logo must be pre-approved by Chapter staff. • Listing your event on the Northern California Chapter’s Facebook page and Bike MS calendar at www.wavestowine.org.

Double Your Donations with Matching Gifts

What’s better than a generous gift to the National MS Society? A gift that is twice as generous thanks to a third party’s matching gift program! Many companies offer employees a matching gift benefit that, in effect, doubles (or in some cases even triples) your gift to the National MS Society. By participating in these programs you and your sponsors can double your dollars and significantly increase the impact that your contribution will make toward creating a world free of MS. Look up a company at www.matchinggift.com. Companies have various methods by which you can submit your matching gift request: online forms, automated phone systems, or a paper form that you submit to the National MS Society when turning in your pledges. Contact your company’s human resources officer (or if your donor’s company offers matching gifts, have them do the same) to find out your options. They will give you a matching gift application; fill it out and send it to us. We’ll take it from there!

Fundraising Consultation

The staff at the Chapter has helped thousands of others and will help you reach your fundraising goal! If you are interested in a one-on-one fundraising consultation please contact us. Email info@wavestowine.org or 415-230-6677 and we will gladly help support you!

Safety The National MS Society and Bike MS: Waves to Wine is committed to providing a quality cycling experience by enforcing safety precautions while ensuring that all participants enjoy a fun experience. For this reason, tips on group riding, bike maintenance, managing road hazards and cycling rules of the road have been included in this guide. It is our hope that you will find this information useful and easy to incorporate into all your cycling experiences. Get to know your bike, learn basic repairs and adjustments, and ride confidently and safely in traffic by taking a cycling class. Many classes provide essential riding skills and techniques to adults and children. For more information and a list of local classes, dates and times visit the Training and Resources section of www.wavestowine.org.

Bicycle Maintenance Safety Checklist All cyclists are responsible for keeping their riding equipment in good working order. Get into the habit of checking your bicycle and equipment before every ride. Small adjustments can help ensure a successful finish. We recommend visiting one of our official bike shops for a complete pre-Bike MS tune up. On the day of the ride, the wait for mechanics at our rest stops can sometimes be very long, and we cannot guarantee that they will be able to completely repair your bicycle and get you back on the road. Please come prepared, carry your own tubes and necessary repair kits, and know how to use them.

∑∑ Check your wheels for worn tires, loose spokes, warped rims and proper inflation. ∑∑ Check your handlebar for looseness at the headset and stem. ∑∑ Check brakes for cable tightness, worn pads and alignment of the pads with the rims. ∑∑ Check your saddle for seat post bolt tightness and proper fit. ∑∑ Check for chain looseness and bad links. Cyclists in California have the same rights and responsibilities as motorized vehicle operators. >> Look and signal before you move: Always scan behind you before changing lanes or making turns. A continuous arm signal is required prior to a turn or lane change (unless arm is needed to control the bike) and while stopped waiting to turn. >> Stay right: Ride in the right portion of the right lane and leave at least four feet between your handlebars and parked cars or other hazards such as other users. You may move left when passing slower vehicles or preparing for a left turn. >> Never ride against traffic. Drivers do not expect bicyclists riding on the wrong side of the street. Even in marked bike lanes, ride in the direction of traffic. >> Ride single file and do not impede traffic. >> Move all the way to the side of the road if you must stop. >> Watch out for metal plates, potholes and cobblestones in the road which can cause falls. >> Bike MS is not a race, ride at your own controllable speed. >> Respect Bike MS Ride Marshals and officials on the route. They are there for your safety. >> Headphones, cell phones, MP3 players/iPods, radios and similar radio devices are not permitted while riding. >> Hands on the handlebars: Do not carry anything that prevents keeping one hand on the handlebars. >> Your bicycle should also be equipped with wheel and pedal reflectors, or other reflective surfaces. >> Do not cross the double yellow line.

As a participant in riders by gestures and words. Remember to pass all the Bike MS: Waves to Wine ride, you not communication on to the next cyclist behind you in the only represent yourself and your team, group. Speak loudly and clearly. The following are the but the National MS Society and the most common terms you may hear in group sponsored cycling community as well. Please rides: exhibit safe and responsible riding >> On your Left: This means a rider is approaching your behavior, so we can continue to enjoy left side. Allow room to pass. >> Car back: This means a car is approaching from the Waves to Wine for years to come! rear. All riders make an effort to move to the right of the road in a single file until the car passes. In most states, the law requires cyclists to ride no more than two abreast. This ensures that traffic will not be impeded, and will make passing easier and safer for the cyclists. >> Gravel - Pothole - Sand - Tracks: Each of these messages is to alert the riders behind you of hazardous road conditions. The words are combined with the gesture of pointing to the hazard well in advance. >> Flat: This indicates that a rider has suffered a flat tire. Allow enough room for the rider to slow down and move to the right side of the road or trail for repair. Offer assistance if needed. >> Slowing: The cyclist in front of you is slowing down. Use caution and prepare to stop. Many cyclists use the palm of their hand toward riders behind them to indicate slowing and stopping. >> Stopping: This indicates that a rider ahead is stopping. Do not forget to unclip from your pedals, if using. Additional Safety Tips At Bike MS events, our active route support team works to make the ride safe. Here are a few additional suggestions to help keep everyone safe on the ride: >> Thumbs down for help: SAG vehicles will stop for you if you are off to the side of the road, off your bike, and giving a “thumbs down” sign or holding your helmet in the air. >> Ride marshal support: A special team of cyclists called Ride Marshals provide support on the rides. They offer minor mechanical help along the route and monitor cycling safety and etiquette to ensure your safety. >> Rest stop etiquette: All cyclists who enter a rest area must pull over, dismount and move completely away from the road and rest-stop entrance. When exiting, move beyond the rest area and proceed with caution on the right side of the road before merging with faster cyclists. >> Passing: Passing others and being passed occurs continuously during the ride. Call out “passing on your left” and allow time for the cyclist being overtaken to move to the right—then pass safely. >> Mechanical problems: Examine mechanical problems and change flats completely off the road. If you have a problem you cannot fix yourself, flag down a SAG van and/or seek a mechanic at the next rest stop.

Hydration

As a Bike MS participant, you are entitled to a free subscription to TrainingPeaks, which includes custom cycling training plans created just for us by Joe Friel, the official coach of Bike MS. Experience these benefits and more:

Bike MS can be a challenging event. It is important to be well-hydrated before, during and after the ride. If you do not drink enough fluids, dehydration can result, causing nausea, muscle cramps, chills and lack of motivation. Dehydration could also lead to heat stroke, a very serious medical condition. To prevent dehydration, use the following general guidelines:

• • • • • • •

Beginner and intermediate cycling training plans provided by author, coach and cycling expert Joe Friel Daily emails with your next workout keep you on track Weekly goals to work toward and check off when achieved Map, graph and share workouts with your friends by email, Facebook and view in Google Maps or Google Earth Upload workouts from one of more than 70 training devices (including Polar) or easily record your workouts manually, track your fitness and gain confidence Choose your language from German, Italian, French, English, Portugese or Spanish Complete nutrition tracking to monitor your diet

The National MS Society and its partners are not liable for any injuries that may occur from any incidents or loss/ damage of any equipment.

• On all rides you should drink 4-8 ounces of water or sports drink (with carbohydrates) every 15-30 minutes. • Drink more if it’s hot, humid or you’re really riding hard. • Sport drinks will help increase your performance, reduce cramps and lessen the possibility of heat stroke. Bike MS rest stops are placed at regular intervals to provide you with plenty of opportunities to eat and drink. • If you experience extreme fatigue, the inability to recover your energy or frequent muscle cramps, seek assistance from our SAG vehicles or medical crew – you may have the early signs of dehydration.

WHAT TO

EXPECT The Routes In its 28th year, the Bike MS: Waves to Wine Ride has much to offer both the novice and experienced cyclist. Saturday’s 75- and 100-mile routes depart from the UCSF Mission Bay Campus and proceed over the legendary Golden Gate Bridge up along Highway 1 to the lunch stop in charming Marshall. From there, continue along the Sonoma County coast before traveling east into Rohnert Park. On Sunday, traverse beautiful Sonoma County vineyards and apple orchards, and ride through gently rolling hills to the finish at Sonoma Mountain Village in Rohnert Park where you will reunite with friends and family and enjoy a hearty dinner and finish line festivities. Cyclists may elect to ride the following mileage options: • Saturday: 40, 75 or 100 miles. • Sunday: 50 or 75 miles. • Cyclists who choose to ride the 40-mile route on Saturday will begin and end in Rohnert Park at Sonoma Mountain Village • Note: no shuttles will be available to transport riders from Rohnert Park back to San Francisco on Saturday. Shuttles will transport riders from Sonoma Mountain Village to San Francisco on Sunday ONLY. Maps, mileage, and topography for each route are available in the Event Details section of our website, www.wavestowine.org.

Saturday Start Lines The start line is an energetic, fun-filled area with fellow riders who are excited about the event. Early arrival is suggested so that you will have time to turn in additional donations, eat a light breakfast, and line up at the start line. The first rest stop is 15 miles into the ride, so be sure to fuel up and use the restroom before you start riding.

How long will it take to pedal the route? Beginner cyclists pedal about 10 miles per hour on a flat road. Intermediate riders in good physical condition ride at approximately 15 miles per hour. Racers and advanced riders cruise at over 20 miles per hour. These speeds are estimates and do not include rest stops. Routes close at 5 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. If you are unable to complete the route, a SAG vehicle will shuttle you to the finish line. Please remember, though, that Bike MS is not a race and everyone should ride at their own pace.

Visit: wavestowine.org | Call: 800-344-4867 | E-mail: info@wavestowine.org | 21.

WHAT TO

EXPECT What kind of support is available on the route? Rest stops are located approximately every 10 to 15 miles throughout the course, complete with porta-potties, water, energy drink, fruit, and snacks. Professional bike mechanics will be on hand throughout the duration of the event for those in need of assistance. Repairs will be free of charge but you will need to cover the cost of parts. Please be sure to thank our partnering bike shop mechanics for their dedication and assistance. (Please be prepared to handle your own minor repairs, e.g. flat tires). When not at a rest stop and minor repair becomes necessary, please remove your bike from the course and away from all other traffic. Radio communication will be available at all stops. Volunteer Amateur Radio Operators will be working to keep the National MS Society staff informed of any emergencies and situations which may develop along the course. In case of an emergency, please contact the nearest HAM radio operator. Medics are scheduled to support all rest stops and first aid supplies will be on hand. Please do not hesitate to ask a volunteer medic or SAG vehicle for assistance. SAG wagons & Moto Safety will be roaming the course and stationed at rest stops to help those in need. These volunteers are there for your safety; please follow their directions. SAG and Moto Safety can be identified by placards placed on their vehicle or motorcycle. SAG Wagons will include a bike rack or space to transport your bike. Please be sure to thank all support personnel for donating their time, vehicle, and fuel. To signal SAG vehicles drivers, follow these three steps: 1. Move off the road and out of the path of other riders 2. Dismount and stand near your bike 3. Take off your helmet and wave at the SAG vehicle. Be aware that some official vehicles on the route are medical, staff, or communications vehicles and are not equipped to carry riders. At peak hours, SAG vehicles may be full. Please have patience; another SAG vehicle will be by soon. NOTE: Personal/Team SAG’s are not permitted at any rest stop locations.

The Finish Line Crossing the finish line is an incredible accomplishment and we intend to help you celebrate! On Saturday, check in your bike at the bike corral and enjoy the finish line festivities. Your luggage will be waiting and shower trucks will be available for use. The Sonoma Mountain Village venue features a sponsor expo, food and beverages, music, and VIP perks for top fundraisers; dinner will be provided. Camp on-site or take advantage of free shuttles to and from our host hotels. On Sunday, take your bike immediately to a truck for loading back to San Francisco or park it if you are getting picked up at Sonoma Mountain Village. Your luggage and shower trucks will again be available while your bike is en route to your preferred start line. Sunday’s finish at Sonoma Mountain Village features food, entertainment, and more. Buses will transport riders back to Sonoma Mountain Village and UCSF in the afternoon.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

QUESTIONS Event Logisitics:

Where are the start, overnight, and finish locations? Please see the Event Information section of this guide, beginning on page 18. Where can I park on the day of Bike MS and how much does it cost? Parking will be available at both start locations, UCSF Mission Bay and Sonoma Mountain Village. Please check our website frequently in the weeks leading up to the event to find out more about parking information and costs. Note that all cars must be out of the parking lot by Sunday night. What if it rains? Bike MS takes place rain or shine. What do I do if I get a flat tire? We highly encourage all participants to know basic safety and repair skills, including fixing a flat tire. Be prepared and bring your own pump and extra tubes for your bike. However, if you are still unable to make the repair, marshals and SAG vans will accompany riders along all three routes. Should you need assistance, please alert a ride marshal or SAG vehicle. If a marshal is unable to assist you with the repair, a SAG vehicle will take you to a rest stop where mechanical support is available. Please note that the wait for assistance and/or a ride to the nearest rest stop can be long. By waiting, you run the risk of not being allowed to finish the route. To help avoid this, check out our safety and training web pages for information on classes where you can learn basic safety and repair skills. Is there a minimum age requirement to participate in Bike MS? Yes–riders must be at least 12 years old to participate. Riders under 18 years of age must complete a notarized waiver, which is signed by an authorized parent or guardian, in order to register and must be accompanied by an authorized parent or guardian 21 years of age or older at all times while participating in Bike MS. Are non-riding family and friends encouraged to participate in the weekend’s festivities? OF COURSE! There are a number of opportunities for you and your family/friends to enjoy the ride together. As you know, volunteers are an integral part of the success of the event—volunteering is a great way to get your friends and family involved. Please visit the Volunteer section of our website for job descriptions and to register. Additionally, we invite your family and friends to join you at the overnight and at the finish line for the festivities. We will have activities and ample parking at both locations for your family and friends. I am coming from out of town and want to rent a bike in San Francisco. Do you have any suggestions? Yes, please visit www.baycitybike.com to find out information about renting a bike for the event weekend. How can I contact the Bike MS staff? You can contact us at info@wavestowine.org or 415-230-6677 or 800-344-4867. See the last page of this guide for a full directory.
