From the desk of J ENA G ARDNER
Dear Friend, There are so many reasons to travel – to explore, to reconnect, to build, to grow. Whatever the purpose, the result is always the same: discovery. Not just of the destination you reach, but about your own personal journey. The plains of the Serengeti. The shores of Bali. The heights of the Eiffel Tower. The vastness of the Gobi Desert. The members of the JG Black Book Collection offer the opportunity to see the world, and yourself, a little differently. These uncommon places and adventures were hand-picked for the deeply inspiring experiences they offer travelers. Some meaningful journeys, though, begin a little closer to home. That’s what happened the day I chanced upon a gallery in Soho and found the work of Roberto Dutesco. He had of course been discovered years before for his magical photographs of the wild horses that live on Sable Island. We became fast friends, bonding over our mutual quest to share beautiful and unknown places and experiences with others. I’m honored that he agreed to grace the cover of this year’s Directory with his exquisite artwork from “The Wild Horses of Sable Island” Collection. Roberto’s imagery reminds us of the strength and beauty of the animals with which we share our planet. That’s why I’m so thankful he is joining me and the JG Black Book Collection in our support of The Bodhi Tree Foundation’s S.A.F.E. Campaign, which is dedicated to safeguarding a future for another of the world’s treasured animals – the African elephant. You can read more about the campaign and how the Sable Island horses are going to help save the elephants on pages 8-9. I invite you to continue your journey in the pages of this book. I’m certain that you will come away re-inspired by the unforgettable members of the JG Black Book Collection. Best Wishes,
Jena Gardner President and CEO JG Black Book
An exclusive Anthony Haden-Guest interview with Photographer Roberto Dutesco Anthony Haden-Guest About Roberto Dutesco Romanian born, he studied photography in Montreal, where he moved as a teenager. Dutesco soon became a sought-after fashion photographer. With the spirit of a globetrotter, he portrayed prominent personalities of our times, such as Pierre Trudeau, the Dalai Lama and Mikhail Gorbachev. Since the early nineties, he has devoted much of his time to photography, poetry and film. The Sable Island Journey has been Dutesco’s main focus and dedication. Since 1994 his efforts to document and showcase The Wild Horses of Sable Island have played favorably in the conservation and protection of Sable Island. His SoHo gallery (est. 2006), presenting this documentation of Sable Island and its band of Wild Horses, was chosen as one of fifty places one must visit in New York City, by AAD, teNeues, 2010.
How do the wild horses of Sable Island belong in the struggle to save the African elephant? Roberto Dutesco
Jena Gardner just walked into the gallery one day. We connected immediately, talking about the wild horses, about my travels and about how I have never seen a place like Sable in the world. And about how the wild horses and the elephants in Africa were similar but also extreme opposites. That was the spark, the idea that perhaps the wild horses on a tiny little island in the North Atlantic could help elephants in Africa. You could have a conservation movement in which animals are saving other animals around the world.
I remember the environmental movement coming to life. Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring was a pollution alert. Romain Gary’s Les Racines du Ciel was about the slaughter of African elephants. In The Kon-Tiki Expedition Thor Heyerdahl found a floating island of plastic garbage in the Pacific. Those connections existed already. How did your journey to Sable Island begin? I was a fashion photographer for twenty-five years, shooting for magazines and advertising campaigns. At first through the fashion travels I was able to visit some of the most extraordinary places in the world and stay at some of the most extraordinary hotels. One night in the early ’90s, it must have been close to midnight, I was at home looking through travel, discovery, history channels, which is what I like to watch, and saw a few minutes of a documentary about Sable Island that the Canadian Film Board did in the early ’60s. It was amazing. This desolate place was the opposite of the world of fashion. I wrote a note to myself, lost it and found it three years later. That was the beginning.
Did your arrival on Sable in 1994 change anything for you? It changed everything for me. In the first couple of days I saw the reactions of the wild horses towards me, how curious they were, how open they were, how loving they were—because man has never had a chance to do anything harmful to them. I’ve been to Africa to see the “Big Five”—that’s a term originally used by big game hunters for lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalos and leopards. And I’ve seen the giraffes, the zebras, the gazelles. They all look at you with very different eyes. Because their collective memory, when it comes down to men, is not exactly a positive memory, those eyes are wary, they are suspicious. When I found Sable, I realized I was documenting something unique. And that uniqueness must be shared with the rest of the world. What was so special about the place aside from horses? You have a place where some five hundred horses, five hundred shipwrecks and five hundred years of known history mingle through the fogbanks of the island, off the great banks of Nova Scotia, Canada. Most ancient transatlantic voyages from Europe sailed past Sable Island. The great-grandfathers and great-grandmothers of many Canadians, and Americans went by Sable Island. Many of the wrecked boats carried horses, and, even though many of the historic details of the shipwrecks are probably irrecoverably lost, it’s clear that the wild horses of Sable Island are a truly great epic of survival.
About Anthony Haden-Guest Anthony Haden-Guest is a writer, reporter, cartoonist and sporadic performer. He was born in Paris, grew up in London, has spent lengths of time in Rome, San Francisco and Los Angeles but is now long settled in New York. He won a New York Emmy for writing and narrating a program about the coming of Eurotrash to Manhattan. His books include Bad Dreams, True Colours: The Real Life of the Art World (Grove Atlantic) and The Last Party: Studio 54, Disco and the Culture of the Night (Morrow). His collections of cartoons and rhymes are The Chronicles of Now (Allworth) and In The Mean Time (Freight & Volume). He publishes both on paper and online and is now working on an animated movie, a further book on the art world and a memoir.
The lure of the island was strong enough to draw you from the world of fashion? The decision was quick. The process was longer than I anticipated. Fashion is something I have always loved. And still do. Opening up a studio in New York City had a double intent. One was to continue with the world of fashion, but the other was to bring the world of the wild horses of Sable Island into New York City. I felt that this story belonged in a city with some of the world’s greatest stories. And the story of the wild horses caught on. Thanks to the gallery, the world of fashion became less and less important for me. The wild horses had brought me into the world of art. Sable Island means Île de Sable. Isle of Sand. It’s a sandbank. And the ocean is rising. So the question is: What is the future? Well, since Sable exists at the convergence of the Arctic Stream and the Gulf Stream, the rising level of the ocean could certainly be significant on Sable. However, stronger currents may bring more sand onto the island. If so it will become a larger land mass than it is today. We already know that over time it has changed shapes many times, and, as in the past, the wild horses will continue to thrive. The protocols of Sable are that you cannot interfere with the wild life, even to help it. Does that also mean you cannot interfere with the actual island itself? By constructing basins, for instance? Well, the weather is extreme. The lighthouses that have been built there over time have been destroyed every few years by shifting sands, ocean currents and winds . Would you think of creating an oasis in the Sahara? It’s very unlikely. The desert would simply swallow it up. The same principles apply to Sable Island.
And your experiences on Sable have drawn you into involvement with such issues worldwide? As a microcosm in the middle of a large ocean, Sable is quite similar to the Earth, a small planet in the Milky Way. Thanks to Sable, I’m currently in conversations with the president of Botswana. He is thinking of banning hunting and beefing up tourism. Africa, the cradle of civilization, would be protected for the generations to come. Hunt with a camera and film! It could change the relationship we have built with animals in Africa. What of your work-in-progress, the Mobile Museum? Over time I have often been asked by people all over the world, “When is this show, The Wild Horses of Sable Island, coming to my neck of the woods?” In 2007 we collaborated with Happy Heart Fund to build a school in Indonesia. When I saw the pictures of sixty kids going to the Sable Island Kindergarten, I thought, “How about building schools in other parts of the world?” The Mobile Museum will bring my experience and my photographic documentation to a worldwide audience. Through beauty, conversation, collaboration and conservation, we hope to create a generation committed to the environment. Our programming will teach kids to love the wild, whether it’s horses, elephants, whales or gorillas in the mist. It’s all connected, we are all connected. It’s a softer approach that I think will create a longer-lasting impact. I was lucky enough in my early childhood to look at the world through my grandfather’s eyes as he showed me the forest, hills and river next to our home. It taught me much, and now through my photographic lens I’m doing the same, sending kids and adults on their own journeys of discovery through the natural world. It needs love but it needs to be left alone. We have gone too far. Much too far. We must end the destruction and conserve what is left.
In the ’70s, when a hurricane laid into Malibu, I remember a guy who proposed using oil-rig technology to rebuild on pylons driven into the seabed. This year people in the Hamptons were talking about raising their houses. Could you raise Sable? I don’t think it’s possible to do anything to Sable Island, other than allow it to be the way it is. It is an island that is lost in time. And if you are one of the lucky few that get there you have to be further lucky that the island and yourself are not lost in fog for weeks, or in rain for days at a time. On my last journey in August 2013, I looked everywhere for the wild horses in the center of the island, and they had just vanished. For two days I was looking and they were just gone. The reason was that the main fresh water lake in the center of the island had become salty. Because the ocean rose? It is quite possible. The only water sources on Sable Island are rain and snow and the thin layer of fresh water they create. The wild horses had gone to the extremes of the island to look for it. What is your next destination? Mongolia, the Gobi Desert, waiting to be unearthed, a place unchanged for centuries, a place where most mysteries stay hidden—just like Sable Island—beneath mounds of sand. I would like to photograph the Przewalski’s horse, which is considered by many to be the only other remaining truly wild horse in the world.

WILD By Roberto Dutesco
adj. living or growing in the natural environment without human aid or care; not tamed or domesticated; uncultivated. Uncontrolled or unrestrained, especially in pursuit of pleasure.
Wild. We are familiar with the term, but in truth we have lost the nuance of this word that we so freely use. In the process of discovery we have forgotten what it is and what it means. I have searched for, brought back, fallen in love with that which is wild. Others have tried to tame it, to make it their own. At the beginning of our journey to civilization, the Wild was enormous, awesome, continuously threatening to Man. Even as recently as a couple of generations ago, when the world was a mélange of cities and farms, linked by road, rail, air and sea, we were still surrounded by a formidable, beautiful, often dangerous wilderness. That Wild is shrinking fast. On Sable Island it survives. In my experience, the pursuit of pleasure is also the pursuit of living free, unaware and unafraid. The wild horses of Sable Island fully embody the term Wild, where the rest of the “wild kingdom” of Africa and of the world is very much aware of, and very much restrained by, Man.
My life as a photographer has taken me to such splendid, imperiled places as northeastern Canada, the Carpathian Mountains, Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego, the northern deserts of the African coast, Asia Minor, and the jungles of Brazil. I have visited the Inca Trail in Peru, the forests of Central America, Belize, Mexico, the American Southwest, Sumatra and Indonesia, and I have seen the greatness of the Himalayan Mountains. Unforgettably, in 1990 I spent some enchanted days photographing the herds of elephants in Kenya’s Maasai Mara and Amboseli National Parks. Throughout my many travels, it has always felt like we are the wild and ferocious ones, as the animals are always on the lookout for us. In the world’s wild kingdoms, it is clear that their inhabitants have become all too aware that they are in the palm of mankind’s hand. As much as possible they are in hiding—mostly cautious, unless provoked, guiding their young farther away, safe from man. I can easily imagine the stories that the animals tell each other, drawing on their collective memory. It always begins, Let me tell you about Man!
Throughout my many travels, it has always felt like we are the wild and ferocious ones, as the animals are always on the lookout for us. But Man has had little direct influence on Sable Island in the last hundred years. Indirect influence, yes, though it is hard to be specific, and Sable’s deeper history is shrouded in fog and mist. Going back through five centuries, there are shipwreck stories and tales of pirates, of men in search of treasure, but hard facts are elusive, except for one beautiful, incontrovertible truth: of the wild horses, almost all are descendants of shipwrecked animals, a few of those perhaps deliberately abandoned on shore. Through strange misfortune, they have been returned to nature. Sable is an anomaly, a blessed place that civilization has mostly forgotten. The Wild I have documented for twenty years now, has been full of curiosity, tenderness, playfulness, fury and love—emotions we have thought of as distinguishing humans, but which are universal and exist in nature and wherever life lives free and unafraid. Certainly such emotions exist on Sable Island.
A six-year-old once asked me: “Which is the fastest horse?” I said: “A free horse. It can go far and wide and return without your seeing it has gone. I think the Sable horse is the freest of all the horses, and so the fastest.” We are all connected, and we all learn from each other. Through JG Black Book and The Bodhi Tree Foundation’s S.A.F.E. Campaign, the wild horses and the elephants in Africa can help one another. But this cannot happen without your help, without your kindness and generosity; it cannot happen without your love. So please give, in memory, in celebration of what it is to be truly Wild, knowing that deep down, beneath the layers of civilization, Man also is Wild.
Africa’s elephants are in crisis. The growing demand for ivory is leading to the decimation of one of the world’s most magnificent animals. Over 35,000 elephants are killed annually for their ivory – the elephant population in Africa has been depleted by 90% in the last 50 years alone. Time is running out for these majestic and gentle giants.
Join The S.A.F.E. Campaign It is time for our industry to take action. THE S.A.F.E. CAMPAIGN, a new initiative from The Bodhi Tree Foundation, is dedicated to galvanizing and uniting the tourism industry to help end the dramatic rise in poaching of Africa’s elephants. No other industry is as vested in Africa’s wildlife as the travel and tourism industry. With a powerful, global voice that is already attuned to educating travelers, the travel industry’s united efforts can inform and impact millions to help protect Africa’s elephants.

Philanthropy Singita Grumeti plays an active role in conserving the wildlife that make this part of the Serengeti home. Environmental education has been identified as a top priority in helping the country address the effects of climate change and the destruction of biodiversity. The Environmental Education Centre was opened on the reserve to educate young school children and to ensure that local communities experience the benefits of preserving the wildlife and natural environment of the reserves that they border, and are so encouraged to play a role in their preservation. They’ve also taken the lead in creating programs to support the local community, establishing a number of sustainable agricultural projects including vegetable gardens, bee keeping, fish farming, a piggery and a sunflower oil initiative. The company traces its lineage to 19th-century British adventurers Robert Peirce and Patrick Leslie, who set up a travel division to cater to the needs of their tea plantation employees, and, later, to other clients in India. Today, Peirce & Leslie builds on that legacy, creating bespoke journeys that exceed the expectations of leisure and business travelers. With handpicked guides and tour managers, access to beguiling private and public venues and a commitment to sustainable tourism, Peirce & Leslie offers itineraries that reveal the Indian subcontinent’s true spirit.
