Purpose: graduation project Programme: housing for exchange students and visiting professors Location: Zurich, Switzerland
Urban intervention My graduation project is about the Hochschule-district in Zürich, Switzerland. In this campus area, both the ETH and the university of Zurich do have their main buildings. Tied up between the old city centre and the city campus, this new guesthouse for exchange students and visiting professors will function as the new link between those two important zones within the city of Zürich. The city campus still has the grandeur of the olden days, with its classic main building on top of the plateau, serving as ‘city crowns’ and display the importance of both universities to its surroundings. On the foot of the hill, the old city is clearly recognizable with its dense and irregular fabric. In between, the hill can be considered as a battle field between city and campus. In times just after the construction of the main buildings of ETH and UZH, the slope was left empty. Later, buildings erected on this slope cloud the relationship between the city campus and the old city. Nowadays, the buildings on the slope are merged into the university campus due to the university’s desire to expanding and are simply bought up by the universities. Due to the difference in height, several stairs and a cable car connection were constructed to conquer this difference, still serving today as the main pedestrian connection between city and campus. The Sempersteig is one of this stairways running up. Flanked by a university building (camouflaged in an old house) on the left and a high school on the right, the stair bridges a difference in height of 16 metres, leading directly to the entrance of the UZH’s main building.

Plans to condense the campus and to look for better connections with its surroundings resulted in an urban master plan by prof. Girot. The introduced key element was a green carpet which stretched the new campus like the classic campus model; solitary buildings on a green plane, but thereby carefully avoiding collision with the boundaries and with a condensing in the heart of the campus. My intervention proposes a more pragmatic attitude towards the campus and its boundaries, introducing mediation between campus and city. Strenghten social cohesion Many exchange students and visiting professors do have a active social life when they are abroad. To strengthen the social cohesion within the guesthouse, extra programme is added in order to achieve it. Added social functions are; squashcourt, games room, kitchen, swimming pool, childrens’ play room and roof terrace. By mixing these functions throughout the building and towards private rooms and appartments, new relations are created, sometimes confronting, sometimes unexpected.

The gentle art of settling Purpose: master project Programme: ‘Open Air University’& a house for a teacher Location: Neukirchen, Germany
site plan (scale 1:5000)
The location for this project is an old mine heap in the Ruhrgebiet in Germany. The proposed continous cor-ten steel slab functions both as a bearer of different functions and as a filter between culture, nature and the site. On the first floor, actually on the level of a pedestrian walking along the path, is an ‘open air University’, meant for three different levels of education and a place where things can be discussed. By means of a lecture-room the classical approach of teaching can be facilitated, a table functions as an intermediary between different kinds of people and outside there is space for further conference. A part of the university can be closed off by means of semi-transparent curtains. They cannot guarantee a decent interior climate but they can make a stay in the university more pleasant. The holes in the roof are perforated in such a way that important spots will be lit more. A house is situated on the ground floor, supplying only the basic needs, but with a nice view. It is the ideal home for a teacher. The fold serves as a beacon on the mountain.

Outpatient dept. of the future Purpose: master project Programme: Outpatient department Location: Eindhoven, the Netherlands
This outpatient department of the future is a stand-alone department, located nearby the centre of Eindhoven. The polyclinic specialities are divided in a four clusters, which are all making use of a common ‘carpet’ of functions, so that the clusters form one identity to the outside world. The skin serves as a protector of all the clusters. In this way, the building can extend without losing it’s special character. The waiting areas are often experienced as unpleasant, without any panorama and daylight. In this outpatient dept. all the waiting areas do have daylight and panorama. The consultation rooms do have entering of daylight as well. The treatment rooms do have a different organization each cluster. A lot of specialities do demand special rooms, other ones can use more standarized rooms. The treatment rooms are not located on the outside of the building on because of their need for privacy. The entrancy is a clearly recognizably point, where the skin is cut in two pieces, which gives the entrance hall a high rate of livability. First floor plan

L’ordinaire et l’extraordinaire Purpose: master project Programme: Media and shoe store Location: Liege, Belgium
Within the city of Liege (Belgium), the Pont des Arches takes a prominent place. Nearby this bridge is the site of the new MediaMarkt (a multimediastore), combined with an exclusive shoestore. The city of Liege has a dual character; on a couple of places the city is closed, withdrawn, on other places there’s a development going on which tries to give the city new zest. The new trainstation of Calatrava is the driving force for that development. The media- and shoestore can come along with this new trend, to jazz up the image of that particular piece of city. The concept of this new store lies in the relation between the inner- en outerside. The baskets with stones are serving as a filter between inside and outside. The facade consists of double-curved surfaces, evoking the feeling of mass and giving new perspectives while moving through the building. The standard ‘multimediastore-image’ is in this way abandoned. The exclusive shoestore is a mass hanging inside the mediastore. His explicit form and use of material are representing the character of the shoebrand.

From fortress to office Purpose: final bachelor project Programme: New headquarters Europol Location: the Hague, the Netherlands Collaborators: 7 fellow students
Because of it’s growth, the Europol organization needs a new headquarters. The new location is planned in ‘the Hague World Forum Area’, where other high-security buildings are located. The organization needed a well-considered security strategy. Vulnerable functions must be well-protected, other functions needed less security. The facade is a multi-layered facade, in cases of explosions it must be safe enough for the vital functions. The construction is also calculated on explosions from outside. There is a main entrance hall, where almost all the staff of Europol can meet each other. From there, there are several routes from where you can reach the desired place to work, each of them includes a number of security-checks.The form is the building is carefully choosen, to fit in its urban context and also by the guidelines of the new urban plan of the area.

The goal of this competition was to make a new plan for a city centre within 24 hours and against other teams. This centre is part of a new extension of the city of Utrecht, which is meant for 100.000 new inhabitants. We made a counterproposal for the urban plan 24 uurGYMZAAL Opstelten already made by the Dutch architect Jo FLORIS VAN DEN BIGGELAAR Coenen & co. We critized its grid patRUUD VAN GINNEKEN JOURI KANTERS tern by introducing a chain of alcoves, GERT KWEKKEBOOM which all have their own identity. Furthermore we made a proposal for transforming our urban plan into architecture. We demonstrated it by visualizing and working out the main building Birds’ eye view in our urban master plan. The concept is expanding the urban square into the building. IMPRESSIERELATIE STADSTUIN ENTREE MET HET PLEIN DWARSDOORSNEDE/

Mayor house Rotterdam Purpose: competition Programme: housing for the mayor of Rotterdam Location: Rotterdam, Netherlands Collaborator: Gert Kwekkeboom
The new house for the mayor of Rotterdam is located at the Westerkade. This site can be seen as a mediator between the old and the new part of Rotterdam, with visual connections to the old houses all around the Veerhaven and the new icons of Rotterdam, like the Erasmusbridge and Montevideo. The old harbour can be seen as well, where Rotterdam owes its reputation for. The centre is in the site’s surroundings as well and is therefore an ideal location for the mayor’s house. To exploit the potential of the site to its maximum, the mayor’s house is orientated perpendicular to the quay and the pier alongside the building offers maximum contact between land and water. The elongated high volume and its orientation offer a big contact surface with its surroundings; both side façades offer a view on the life line of the city; the Maas river. Although its big volume, the building is still modest. The somewhat heavy orthogonal volume is refined through slicing the sides of the volume, thereby marking the entrance of the pier. This pier is publicly accessible, so the mayor’s house will not be an isolated fortress for the inhabitants of Rotterdam. On the roof, the house has a private outside living area as well. The mayor’s house is divided in a living part and an official part. The lower part of the building houses the official part, where mainly guest are welcomed and where work areas can be found. This part emphasizes its relationship with its surroundings; the pier and the stairs. The stairs inside is a good location to exhibit given presents and art. A couple of storey’s further away from the pier, we find the more intimate house for the mayor and his family. From the roof garden, the family can enjoy the sun,
the wind and the view. To structure the internal routing and to frame the view, parts of the façade are open and parts are closed. To prevent people to look into the house on some points, the outside is designed as a refined network of willow branches. This voile eases the scale of the building with its delicacy and tactility. At some places, the underlying EPDM-foil can be seen.

Watch out! Purpose: competition Programme: Outlook tower Location: Hilversum, the Netherlands Collaborator: Gert Kwekkeboom
Traditional watchtowers are only focussing on the actual plane where you can look on the surroundings, the landscape. They are organized to bridge the distance from the ground level to the platform as soon as possible. This proposal for a watchtower nearby Hilversum is orientated much more horizontal and is not only focussing on the target of the climb, but also on the climb itself. This climb will become a tour of discovery with unexpected moments. The stair moves different then expected. He does not go regular to the top and does not always touch the outside. Sometimes the stair turns and gives you another sight than you expected. The route also offers a couple of points of rest, to give the climber the opportunity to enjoy the landscape. We would like to think of the appereance as a sculpture in the landscape. It becomes clear that the tower is a human-made object within the freakishness of nature. The skin does not only serves a functional purpose, it’s incision gives the tower an extra aesthetical quality. A part of the cutted pieces can serve on theConstructieprincipe ground as a shelter. (Architecture) Photography forces you to take a particular point of view and makes you therefore think how a building should be representated on the photo by its composition and appearance. During my study I made a lot of architectural photographs, here a short range of photos I consider as being a good photograph.
Internship RenĂŠ van Zuuk Architekten My internship at RenĂŠ van Zuuk Architecten at Almere I experienced the versatility of architecture; therefore I worked on the building site, on some projects and on a new website for the office (renevanzuuk.nl). This new Flash-website gives the visitor more information on projects than the old one. I worked on several projects. Therefore I made models, helped with designing a pattern for a villa and made drawings for a couple of projects.
Magazine / Writing
The CHEPOS is the quarterly magazine (in Dutch) from CHEOPS, study union from the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven. Every edition has it’s own theme, for which the editors are looking for internal and external writers to put together the magazine. The layout is done by the students who are in the board of editors. I have been editor-in-chief of number 10, which was about the new trend in Dutch architecture; private collective customer assocation and its influence on architecture / urbanity. Downloadable at www.chepos.nl
Eindhoven Extreme Urban Sitting After Japanese examples, extreme urban sitting is about creating strange situations by sitting on strange locations. Therefore I made some pictures of a friend of mine, sitting on different locations in the city of Eindhoven.
