Enhancing community connections using secondary support
Mantua, Philadelphia, PA Spring 2022, 10 weeks
Prof. Rich Olaya
In a historic community like mantua many of the people here have built connections and are linked to one another directly and indirectly in ways that might seem insignificant to outsiders. However, communities like this have been around and have thrived off each other for years, therefore this project is meant to enhance this belief of “it takes a village” and give this community a hub where they can enhance and share their resources and talents. Combining these community connections with educational and medical support, in a circular form is meant to strengthen this continuing cycle of sharing resources and bonding.
MANTUA COMMUNITY COMPLEX
Creating a balance between the separation/privacy for working and the activeness of the home Mantua, Philadelphia, PA
Fall 2021, 10 weeks
Prof. Rachel Schade
The Mantua community complex project is in Mantua Philadelphia, adjacent to the Lancaster com mercial corridor. This complex is comprised of two typologies, live/work and mixed use. The goal of this community is to overlap and blend these typologies together to develop a community that complements and uplifts their specific qualities. The two large paths that cut through the site are meant to be gathering spaces and invite the surrounding context into the complex. The horizontal path is a flexible space where residences can enjoy leisure time and the businesses can host outside seating and markets to sell products. While the vertical path is a combination of private backyards and a semi-public courtyard that the livework residence can enjoy.
STUDY MODELS MASSING MODELAfter the pandemic our society had to reeval uate our living and working environments and layer them together. However, to this there needed to be a balance between the separa-tion of privacy for working and the activeness of our home lives. Therefore, when design ing this typology, the ground floor is dedicated to the personal leisurely activities while the top floor is reserved for working professional duties. The middle floor is meant as a buffer space to keep these areas separated but to prevent the feeling of isolation a light well was placed so that there is a connection between the floors.
The pandemic also affected business on a local and global scale especially in a city such as Philadelphia where mixed use rowhomes have been a staple typology for decades. To help small businesses thrive minimal gestures were incorporated into the design. The orientation of these homes sits at the edge of a high traffic street as well as be ing parallel from a bus stop so that anyone has access to these businesses. Behind these homes are outdoor spaces where these businesses can host outdoor seating, markets, and events that boost retention rates of customers in the surrounding community.

Stepping Heights Suites is located at the edge of center city Philadelphia, adjacent to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. When society thinks of social housing, specifically for the elderly we think of places that are dim and dark where people are forgotten about. This project is meant to break the stereotypes of social housing for the aging by establishing moments of interactions and connec tions on the interior and exterior of the project. Specific design elements created in this project are meant to merge the community of the residence as well as the residence with the surrounding context. Every other floor in the interior has an opening so that neighbors can interact with one another and not feel isolated. This interior space is emphasized by the pushing and pulling masses on the facade. This opened up the opportunity to create a roof terrace space that looks out to the Schuylkill River.

Music, it’s a prescription many of us use to connect to a deeper part of ourselves or make since of the emotions we feel in life we don’t understand. With live music it makes us become connected to those around us and feel free to express ourselves in any manner. Due to the juxtaposition of the older neighborhood and its surrounding counterparts this music nexus was created to act as a transition between the two and bring people together of all communities to laugh, dance, and celebrate becoming a site that strengthens bonds between neighbors thus preserving the image, history, and attitude this avenue has held onto for decades.

The core concepts of my design is to combine the foundational components that have inspired creative minds for centuries, music and art. I did this by creating two separate structures that will house each component and its activities. When thinking about the shape I didn’t want these build ings to just be separate entities with no connection between them, but rather a partnership where they play off each other’s structural language. Therefore, I mimicked curved lines and diagonal planes so that they give the impression it’s supposed to be a single building. I also think that having my site be placed where commercial, institutional, and residential communities meet it established this implied beacon where people can come together and enjoy the arts and nurture their minds as well as others.
