QUANTITATIVE APPENDIX // ONE A YEAR OF RESEARCH

The visualization charts the frequency of articles based on their publishing date and subsequent topic tags in a scatter-plot arrangement. Each record is plotted at the intersection of the tag and the date tagged. Frequencies of use in a single day are also registered by the intensity of color gradient. The y-axis and x-axis are both bordered by a summary string for reference as that day/tag’s total activity. High daily activity is registered as a dark red plot while days with no activity are left blank. Here we can see the intensity and pace at which we were active in our data mining. A visualization of this nature reveals the evidence of the human hand in the process; its triumphs

Where here the visualization looks back on our past research, what does it say about our future endeavors? Where our previous journeys we ventured into the unknown unassisted, these alternative outlooks and insight will provide a guide to lead us down unfamiliar paths with an enlightened advantage.

The most insightful revelations revolve around key dates and events which receive wide ranging discussion. Important events are highlighted by clouds and strings of high frequency tag use. If we isolate activity on the date of the Dubai Metro launch (September 9, 2009) for example, we can view this increased attention to relevant issues (Infrastructure, Dubai, Cultural_projects, global_ investor, etc).

and its drawbacks. We can see times where we either got away from collection to begin production. Or did we simply take a summer holiday? The platform of delicious is bias in its nature; it requires individuals to make decisions about what they believe the networks and connections to be. With numerous contributors making new/different parallel tags unaware of those of other contributors, the data becomes dispersed. Certain tags are ignored while others are over utilized.

DISTRIBUTION OF SOURCES // TYPE

As a team coordinating from multiple time zones, the most effective way to collect and distribute relevant articles into the pool of collective research was to use the online bookmarking service Delicious as a universal reference location. By the conclusion of research in March 2010, we had over 1200 articles and 143 different tags. This by no means qualifies the entirety of the research but presents a cross-section of materials utilized to the research community. Delicious provides a simple means of collection, but lacks the ability to view the material from an alternative perspective. The Al Manakh Research calendar is the first step in the development of a tool to investigate these relationships, a way to understand the volume of our research database.
