A studio exchange with the Italian University of Palermo offered the unique opportunity to experience architecture and design in a new context. The brief was reflective of the country’s respect and preservation of cultural history. A museum to house local artifacts was required in the archaeological area of Castello a mare (sea castle,) positioned in the midst of diverse programmatic functions with a ferry and cruise ship terminal to the west, an apartment block and fish market to the south along one of Palermo’s main streets - Vittorio Emanuele, a recreational fitness zone of the Cala, boat sheds to the east and a disused industrial port to the north. The site served as an early medieval Norman maschio/fort and later a 14th century Aragonese stronghold. It is under excavation to unearth the ancient relics and is therefore subject to many building restrictions.

A connection from the ferry terminal and industrial zone is provided to the area. Boat sheds and their workshops are retained, however some will be removed by the local council (indicated by shading).
The abandoned cranes have the ability to travel along tracks. They are moved closer together with one located at the end of a walkway perpendicular to Vittorio Emanuele and the other overlooking Castello a mare. A snaking structure links the two cranes providing functional space and access to the structures. Additionally, its form helps to consolidate a piazza in the disused port.
Various programmes are introduced to the site as suspended forms from the cranes.
The square is utilized for various purposes, fluctuating between markets, stalls and street performances.
The design approach is inspired by the colour, liveliness and functional multiplicity its surroundings. Their proximity to one another creates programmatic overlaps, while the Castello a mare itself is a revelation of the layers in history. The intent is therefore to retain and respect these levels of diversity with the insertion of a museum conceived as a new addition in the stratum of this environment.

A newly formed connection between Gillies Avenue and Clovernook Road will provide easy pedestrian access to the square and Broadway. It will also serve as a starting point on one end of the Urban Park
The ongoing development and visual and experiencial attraction of the Urban Park will extend Broadway development further south towards major connections
