FRESHMAN Villa Savoye Transformation

Villa Savoye Transformation This project began with a series of diagramatic studies of Le Corbusiers Villa Savoye and Carpenter Center. Through these diagrams were to analize specific conceptual, architectural, geometrical, and material conditions that we discovered through both readings and visiting the Carpenter Center. We were then each assigned one of four sites in which we were to reconfigure the Villa Savoye to fit our site. Our design must preserve the critical design concepts, elements and organizing principles discovered through our research and diagrams. It also had to have all of the same programatic elements of the existing house. The area of each room should be as close as possible to the original with a 10%.

The site that I was assigned was in the shape of an L with a building beside it. When analyzing the site I noticed that the shape of the building was similar to that of the Carpenter Center and the L-shape was similar to that of the lung shapes of the Carpenter Center. So I decided to incorporated this into my design. Next I establish a grid system. I did this by taking the corner square that the site created and copied it up and to the side creating a more proportional site. I then used this to create a sub grid.

Noticed that the corner of the L-Shaped sited created a perfect square.
Took this square and copied it up and to the side inorder to create a more proportional site.
Next I created a grid system inorder to create the shape of my building and to layout columns.

I then used this sub grid to created the lung shape for my design. I did so by connecting multiple radius. This lung shape can be seen on all floors of my design.
The top study model is of the Carpenter center showing the two lungs with a cube as a core. Next model shows the two primary circulation in the Villa Savoye. The experiencial ramp and the easy access staircase. (Museum Board)

Overall I really enjoyed this project and happy with the design that I came up with.

Outdoor Café
Our assignment was to design an Outdoor café located at the Christian Science Center. The purpose for this café was to create a second gathering place to balance the popular circular fountain at the north-east end of the site. Our designs had to open up views, to encourage people watching for those who do not choose to sit at the café, and to create alternative movement patterns across the site. The café was to have primarily exterior seating, with a small glass enclosed interior seating area and service counter. After visiting the site I noticed that there are two different characteristics to the either ends of the site. To the west of the site is more residential and to the east is the city.
24
So for my design I wanted to have this view that opens up to the Mother Church. To make the Mother Church the main focus and to restrict the views to the city and the congestion of the city My design consists of a single metal frame that wraps around this view to the Mother Church. I made the front of the building lower which not only allows for clearstory windows but also creates this precession of short to taller space.
This is a diagramatic model that shows my idea of the structure shown by museum board wrapping around this view to the Mother Church shown by the pink foam.
This is a second study model which shows the proccess and is very similar to my final design.

Boston Ballet School Annex This Boston Ballet School Annex is located on Warren Street in the South Boston. It is to house, for a period of up to four months, a notable visiting dance artist. Who will select six students who will study and live within the annex. In addition to the residential component of this annex, it included a multi-purpose room that would be used as a practice/rehearsal studio space or for small performances or exhibits. Also, another smaller studio and a shared common room for the residents would be included into the 2,800 square foot program. During our design process we were to consider the size and hierarchy of these components.
