The University and Community The Florida State University is a major residential university of 16 colleges and more than 2,200 faculty serving a student population of approximately 41,000, with facilities and resources that enjoy a constant state of expansion. Tallahassee, home to Florida’s beautiful capital city (population 357,000+) is situated in the verdant “Big Bend” area of Florida and enjoys a mild change of season, proximity to the Gulf of Mexico, the Apalachicola National Forest, and many other natural recreation areas. The presence of the state government, a community college, and two major universities ensures that Tallahassee is a city unusually rich in cultural opportunities. The city’s vitality is also supplemented by sources outside academia. The classical music of the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra is balanced by mainstream concerts at the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center and other private venues; local art galleries display the works of regional artists and traveling exhibits, and the community enjoys excellent public television and two public radio stations.
The College of Music The College of Music has a student body that is at once diverse in scope and comfortable in size; the 750 undergraduate and 400 graduate students enrolled in the College represent nearly every state in the nation and many foreign countries, while the maximum enrollment of 1150 provides all students with an ideal balance between individualized instruction and ensemble experience. The College of Music is proud to support the arts in Tallahassee, and offers more than 500 annual concerts and recitals featuring students, faculty, guest artists, large and small ensembles. Of particular interest to music students are the numerous international guest artist performances, master classes, and residencies sponsored by the College.

Faculty The College’s faculty members are leaders in performance, music education, music therapy, music theory, composition, commercial music, jazz, musicology, and ethnomusicology. Our faculty regularly perform at both national and international venues, including frequent appearances at Carnegie Hall and abroad. Our music education and music therapy programs were recently recognized for producing some of the most noted research in those fields. Recent faculty accomplishments include Grammy Awards, Pulitzer Prizes, and Guggenheim fellowships. Audition Information All applicants must complete both the University application and the College of Music application before an audition time will be confirmed. Undergraduate
Audition Appointments
Each applicant to the College of Music must complete an admissions audition (see audition dates in sidebar). To be admitted to the College of Music, applicants must meet minimum standards through the placement audition. All undergraduate applicants are strongly advised to apply to the University by the October 17, 2011 deadline for optimal consideration.
Audition appointments are obtained by submission of the College of Music application. A preliminary confirmation will be sent to applicants upon completion of the Florida State University and College of Music applications. Please do not make travel arrangements until this confirmation is received. Confirmation of the audition time will be sent to applicants a minimum of two weeks prior to the requested audition date. Applicants who have not completed the University application or College of Music application will not receive an audition time. The College of Music begins accepting applications on August 1; the priority deadline to submit the College of Music application is December 1. The College of Music will continue to accept applications so long as openings are available.
Graduate
All performance applicants must audition. It is strongly recommended that performance applicants audition at one of our FSU campus audition weekends (see sidebar for dates). Those applicants submitting a recording in lieu of a live audition will be asked to complete an audition for the faculty upon matriculation. Graduate Voice Performance applicants are required to complete the prescreening requirements by December 1. Following faculty review, selected applicants will be invited to audition. Voice applicants planning to audition at one of our national auditions or to send a recorded audition in lieu of a live audition must first pass prescreening. Please see our website for more detailed information. For optimal consideration, it is strongly advised that Voice applicants attend a live audition on campus. While nonperformance degree applicants are not required to complete an audition, successful applicants will be required to perform an Applied Music Assessment upon arrival for enrollment (Musicology and Theory/Composition excluded).

Recorded Auditions
All applicants are strongly encouraged to audition on campus. If a live audition cannot be arranged, recorded auditions will be accepted, but admittance into a degree program requires applicants to reaffirm their placement level by live audition at the time of matriculation. All music majors are charged an instrument/equipment fee each fall and spring semester. Registration fees are assessed on a per credit hour basis for each semester. Please note that the above fees are subject to change. The most current tuition costs can be found online at http://financialaid.fsu.edu/apply/cost.html. Tuition Reduction Scholarship
FSU offers a tuition reduction scholarship for out-of-state undergraduate students. This competitive scholarship, while open to all majors, is guaranteed for all out-of-state students who are admitted as Music majors for Summer or Fall, 2012. The exact amount of the scholarship will depend upon the student’s course load and the cost of tuition as set annually by the Florida Legislature and the Florida State University Board of Trustees; however, the tuition reduction will typically result in out-of-state students paying approximately 2/3 the “normal” rate for tuition. It is anticipated that this scholarship will bring the cost of attending FSU much closer to what students would pay to attend institutions in their home states. Academic Common Market for Graduate Students
Under the Academic Common Market agreement, graduate applicants for certain specific academic areas may be eligible for waiver of the non-resident portion of tuition, based on state of residency. College of Music Scholarships College of Music financial assistance is available in the form of Undergraduate Music Scholarships and partial Out-of-State Tuition Waivers. These annual scholarship awards are normally renewable provided satisfactory academic and musical progress is demonstrated. College of Music scholarship assistance ranges from $500 to $3,000 per academic year and is available to undergraduate applicants who demonstrate superior musical ability. Talented non-Florida students may also qualify for a partial waiver of out-of state tuition.
Graduate Assistantships Graduate assistantships are available in most areas of study in the College of Music. The annual stipend varies from $4,000 to $12,000 depending upon the amount of service rendered, the nature of the service, and the qualifications of the student. Graduate assistants receive a waiver of both in-state and out-of-state tuition. Applications will be accepted at any time, but February 25 is the priority consideration deadline for assistantships that begin in the fall semester. All students who complete the application process for admission to the College of Music are automatically considered for graduate assistantships.
University Fellowships & Financial Aid for Minority Graduate Students University Fellowships and merit-based awards for minority graduate students are available to a limited number of students in all disciplines. These awards pay stipends ranging from $5,000 - $23,000. Specific details are available on the College of Music website, www.music.fsu.edu. Generally, students with grade point averages below 3.7 or GRE Quantitative/Verbal scores below 1400 are not awarded University Fellowships. Please contact The Graduate School for appropriate deadlines, forms and information, or visit their website at www.gradstudies.fsu.edu/funding.html. Because of the early deadlines for a number of these programs, students should pursue these options as soon as possible during the application period.

College of Music Undergraduate Notification The College of Music will make final admissions decisions for all applicants during this period. Notifications should be mailed by March 16. Please be sure your academic application to FSU is complete well in advance of this date. Incomplete applications and academic issues will result in delayed notification. Transfer Students: Notifications will begin on March 7 for students with completed FSU applications. Academic issues and incomplete files can delay notification by several months.
Visiting the College Visits to the College of Music are encouraged for all applicants, although they are not a requirement. College of Music tours may be arranged Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. by telephoning or writing the College of Music (850-644-6102). Questions regarding admissions, financial aid, and the various music programs will be answered during the tour. Auditions for undergraduate applicants cannot be scheduled during tours. University tours may be arranged through the Visitors Information Center, C-1100 University Center (850-644-3246). Overnight facilities are not available on campus; visitors should make reservations for overnight housing with local hotels.
