Brief My brief is to design a space that will be use as transport for the public and really focus on the whole experience and journey each passenger will receive. The space can be a grand central train station, bus shelter and the bus stops, airport or boat bay. I will be creating a structure that will be used as an airport. I will be focusing on the experience the travelers get with the planes. I will also try to incorporte another feature in order to convert my building into a multi-use structure and make the peoples journey much more easier and pleasant.

Specificati on

I focus I will have on the experience of the users of my airport will be very educative, it will provide travelers with the history of airports and planes and have a wide file and information based on different international airports; my airport will contain a museum for those who have long hours in between flights.

Points to think about •

Who are the users and their needs? Think about function

Age range

What Kind of access might people need

What activity takes place – be broad and inventive

Related locations/ environment/ situation for inspiration.

Plan a visit. Airport Peope experience with the panes The runway through the airport (Problems with the size) Only the nozle inside the building A small airplane inside the building with escalators going through A restaurant with music and dancers for waiting area. Commercial shops A modern computerised reception. Museum of transport A glass garage for the planes half inside the airport for people to experience more of the planes.

Ideas

Research An airport is a location where aircraft such as fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and blimps take off and land. Aircraft may be stored or maintained at an airport. An airport consists of at least one surface such as a runway for a plane to take off and land, a helipad, or water for takeoffs and landings, and often includes buildings such as control towers, hangars and terminal buildings. Larger airports may have fixed base operator services, seaplane docks and ramps, air traffic control, passenger facilities such as restaurants and lounges, and emergency services. A military airport, in the US, is known as an airbase or air station. A water airport is a water aerodrome (an area of open water used regularly by seaplanes or amphibious aircraft for landing and taking off, usually with passenger facilities on parallel land, which acts as an airport.

Inspiration Zaha Hadid

What Zaha Hadid inspires from her creations is that no design is ridiculous or impossible, most of her structures is something that you will only see in the future but even though they do look futuristic and abstract they are still built.

Inspiration Barajas Airport

Elements that I like about Barajas airport is that is an very organic structure its made out of wood so it seems and has a feeling of being a hut. I really like the use of colour for the support of the roof and its very clever because if your lost you can remember by just thinking ‘go to the part where id green’

Barajas Airport (Madrid) Airport Barajas situated in Madrid (Spain) is one of the worlds most inspirational airport in my eyes, it is very rich to the eye because of its beautiful structure and the idea of the colours that are used inside.

Airport Museum The second element that would consider to include is the function of a museum inside my airport that would display and educate my users of the history of airports and planes. It wouldn’t be a particularly big museum, it would be just one room that would around 100 people at a time.

Closer to the planes . •

I wanted to think about giving the people a close of experience to the planes and I wanted to play around with how close I could get the planes to the people so I thought I could maybe split the airport into two buildings and have a big gap in the middle where the planes can go pass like a catwalk which I got the idea because of the runway and I though I could actually create a runway of planes for the people in the airport. This idea was very ambitious and complicated because there would have to be a very big space in between each building for the planes the get pass which can cause problems.

My second idea was to have only the nozzle of the planes parked inside the actually airport and the rest of the plane outside.

A third suggestion was to have shelters for planes that were glass so that people could see them parked next to each other close to the airport.

B’Hive The thought of using the form of a Beehive as inspiration spring about because I thought about the sort of movement that occur in airports and what came to my mind were that the planes acted like bees and the airport the Beehive.

B’Hive After completing some drawings I realized the issues that appeared with doing it in this way for example I had to think about how the people would with all the planes around the airport it wont let any one in without risking their lives. Another problem was that doing this way created problems with the size I wasn’t able to do it big enough without it loosing its design idea of a Beehive.

B’Hive Development From the model I produced previously inspired by the beehive form, I used the same model to develop it and create other forms using that one to create other structures in the round like a beehive so some didn’t really change in order to keep the concept intact but each development offered a different interesting element .

In the Round

These are some drawing I produced using the beehive as inspiration. What they all have in common is that they are all structures in the round

Female Figure

I was having trouble of thinking of ways of getting new interesting forms so I had the idea of using pictures of female bodies and tracing over half of the outline of the figure of each picture and use the outline as potential buildings I then used the computer to add human figures to help paint the picture.

Female Figure The experiment was very interesting because it offered me various shapes and very unique structures that I could play around with for example this one I added a balcony and escalators and then some human figures to see what it could potentially be. It enforces the idea of the body and heart of an airport because I am actually using bodies as inspiration and it enables me to use these drawings to create a more atmosphere of mystery and let people thinking about these unique shaped if it is used as a building. Even though there are very creative and unique structures they do pose a threat because they cause a problem with space and where things will be placed and work.

The Heart of The Airport Using again the idea of the main body is the heart of the airport where everything happens, I literately used this idea and the shape of a heart. It created another idea in the round which allowed the entry of planes from many angles which was very interesting.

The problem was just like the other in the round ideas and the structure of the shape and space inside was difficult to sort out of things were going to work without any problem.

Building With Levels My next move was to look up buildings that were included a more classic form like a square but were used cleverly to create interesting and creative buildings. I wanted to add level and make it more simple with the normal first floor second floor third floor etc. Instead of building with a lot of weird curves and parts sticking out.

Decorating a Building These are buildings that instantly capture the eye of anyone and everyone that sees these spectacular buildings. They caught my eye because structures like these sometimes can be just very simple but what makes them more appealing and that adds a futuristic touch is a coat of decoration that the architect adds to a building, this is a feature I want to keep in mind and try out with my ideas.

Spiral Roads Having in mind that my airport wont be on steady ground but supported by pillars to hold it up to add the levels I had to think about how the people will have to enter so I research and I really liked the idea of a spiral road. A that increases its altitude as it goes around was the key to the entrance to my airport which will have a round about in the middle for the cars to go back down.

Airport Runway Structure An airport requires a lot of space because of all the components that have to be included, they are very complex so I research the runway structure which is a compulsory component in an airport and in my research I found the image below which helps explain the structure of the runway. I then used the research as a template to create my very own runway to help build the idea and show that my building is an airport in my evidence

Roof Continuing my research I found some very interesting images that I thought were extremely beautiful , I thought these could make a beautiful roof to my structure if I decide to leave the top part of the buildings open. It can cause a problem if it starts to rain or if there is a windy day but they could be made out of thick glass which with support more any sort of weather. I could also include these design inside my buildings.

Square Buildings I used black to cover the boxes because I wanted to add a more elegant and futuristic touch to my structure because it’s a colour you wouldn’t really see on the main building of an airport and I wanted to have a futuristic feeling to it like Zaha Hadid does ass she uses white for most of all her buildings and successfully creates this feeling.

I simply started of with building three square box a large medium and small one to help create different levels, I experimented with the placement of each box which then created these interesting looking potential buildings.

Experimenting

Final Building Structure

The structure I chose from the experiments I did with the three boxes is the one above because it was very simple yet cleverly interesting because the building will have levels, the black colour and the bubble wrap element that I will include which will development my building .

Decorating My Building Used the technique I learnt and covered my building with bubble wrap to see what effect it would have on my design. I used to do this to my building because from the research I liked the futuristic element it added to each design and it was something I wanted to included into my own and also because I wanted to do a more simple structure to minimize any cause of problems and by just adding this element completely changed my idea to a whole new level.

Adding the Components To my final model I decide to stick with the idea of adding the bubble wrap to the base of each building which effectively makes them look more futuristic . I then added the runway I drew onto the end of the third building to help show how my airport will work and where the airplanes will be placed Next came the spiral road to the main entrance to the airport which is supported by pillars and consists of a roundabout for the cars to come back down.

Final Model Virtually

The Experience My building will consist of three parts, it will have a road that will lead to the main entrance of the airport which will be the highest and biggest one. The main building will be where all the airlines where the check in and baggage will be handed in. it will have a waiting area small commercial and food stores. This building will also have space to place a small plane in the middle of the main floor for people to admire and see what a plane is like up close.

The second building is smaller than small than the main one with will be connected with an escalator. This building will consists of a bigger commercial shopping area availed for everyone which helps as a pass time for people who are waiting for their flights. This area will also include a small one room museum featuring information and objects all to do with the history of airports and airplanes as used for people waiting for connection flights

The last building, smaller than the other two, will be where all the gates will be which will lead to each airplane. This building will also be connected with the middle building with a escalator . It will only hold small food stands for quick snacking before or for the flight. All the buildings will be decorated with designs similar to the ones that will be used for the roof but in smaller scale.
