JOHNS HOPKINS SHERIDAN LIBRARIES, GIFT OF RICHARD S. FRARY
This illustrated collection of children’s poems is one of the finest works by Toyen, a dominant figure of the Czech avant-garde. The author was a children’s librarian and is known only for this book, which sought to introduce young readers to the wonders of the modern world, such as the telephone, film, radio, and airplanes, while praising more traditional tools, such as books, desk lamps, the printing press, and tractors.
