MEDITATION RETREAT
YICHUN, CHINA | KKAA | TEAM: LUKE DUROSS, ADRIAN YAU
Situated deep in the forest, the resort helps the guests to find their inner Zen and bring that peacefulness back home with them. The transparency of the inner glass shell and the dynamic quality of the interwoven wooden beam outer shell promote the interaction and connection between the guests and nature, which helps them tap into their deeper consciousness and ease their ever-increasing anxieties in the modern world.

PARAMETRIC | MODULAR | CANTILEVER
The local traditional”wood masonry” technique has been applied to form the cantilever structure throughout the building. The huge cavernous entrance welcomes the guests in a flowing, sculptural way. The building follows the contours of the hill with a folded roof.

REINVENTION
OTTAWA, CANADA | CARLETON | TECH I
This kinetic sculpture was modeled on Calatrava’s Wave installation. However, the mechanism was based on assumptions. Each Sine/Cosine cycle has 32 individual straight beams which in turn form a curved ruled surface (the wave). The slope of each beam is determined by a constantly changing triangle which has: • A fixed pivot point on the top of the base, • A fixed distance from the pivot to the pin on the beam, and • A fixed distance from the beam pin to the pin on the upper gear. The wave motion is achieved by unrolling the rotational motion of the gear (arraying the modules) along its normal axis.

SPIDO
MOBILE PAVILION
OTTAWA, CANADA | CARLETON | STUDIO I
Being able to move on their own, Spidos come to the users who need temporary shelters. Similar to other location based services, like CAR2GO & mobi, the system use GPS technology to locate the user through a smartphone app. The nearest Spido will then be given order to reach the user in the shortest time possible. They will be intelligent enough to avoid obstacles with the help of sensors.

Like a spider, Spido has 8 robotic arms designed for fast and flexible movements. Once it reaches the destination, it will anchor itself and unfold the weatherproof fabric between the limbs for full protection.

ANEMOI
COMMUNITY CENTRE
SHANGHAI, CHINA | CARLETON | STUDIO V
Situated in a high density neighbourhood along the canal, Anemoi is a community hub where people can meet for social, educational, and recreational activities. Like a storm, the swirling form of the building draws people in from all sides; the calm ‘storm eye‘ is the central atrium with skylights which functions as a library where people sit and read to find tranquillity and restore their peace of mind; the moving ‘rain bands’ wrapping around the central core are circulation and programmes which involve a lot of motion.

WATER SMART COMPLEX
OTTAWA, CANADA | CARLETON | STUDIO VII
The mixed use complex houses city’s storm and waste water infrastructure in harmony with habitable spaces around it. Located centrally at the base of the complex, the waste water treatment plant has the capacity to serve residents of the entrie precinct. With the help of micro organisms, the treated water could be reused for irrigation. Placing these odour-free final stages of water treatment in tiers in the transparent funnel towers in public promotes the awareness of people to be water smart. The eggshell playland facility scatterred in between the funnels help introduce the young generation into the space, expose them to the latest technology of water treatment, and engage their attention in environmental issues.

SUPERGRID URBAN PATTERN ANALYSIS AND RESEARCH
The Lower Mainland population is forecast to grow by 30,000 new residents each year or 1.2 million residents by 2041 for a total population of 3.4 million. Downtown Vancouver and its adjacent neighbourhoods are the most densely populated and most frequently visited areas in metro Vancouver and will become fully packed very soon. It makes more sense to revise the zoning in the future to allow for an upper level grid system over the existing one when hover vehicles enter the market. The floors right below the upper streets are designed for parking lots and mechanical rooms, which also act as noise buffers.

24H HUB
RECHARGE YOUR BATTERIES
OTTAWA, CANADA | CARLETON | STUDIO III
The store owner is doubtful that a stand-alone bookstore can survive the challenges of business longevity especially given the many alternative methods of book acquisition as well as non-print options for the dissemination of information and texts. 50% of the book collection has been removed to host new programmes, which makes the place a true 24/7 ‘HUB’ for the locals. The stage and multi-level viewing platforms function as a perfect venue for book launches and local cultural events.

The digital is not simply a new workflow; it is a new cognitive environment. With each new fundamental shift in technology there is a corresponding change in methodology. If process and production are intrinsically linked then a change in the means by which we create, think and explore architecture should lead to a new architectural ‘product’.
