Digital Model Study

Statement This research experiments with sand as an additive building material to build lightweight shells, using digital form-finding and advanced robot milling prototyping methods. A very thin layer of sand was mixed with a binder to make a translucent coating material that could be applied to a variety of base objects. These base objects are digitallymodelled using an existing script based on natural sand formations. The robotic arm carves these flowing shapes and formations into the base. The sand coating is manually applied to the base object, which is later removed leaving just a thin translucent shell with two contrasting sides. This method could be used to make lightweight architectural panels for internal or external use. Several panels could connect together to form a shell-like enclosure.

Statement

Non-spatial D

Hyperdimensional space exists in the field of theoretical physics and mathematics. The architecture itself is built in the 3-dimensional space of classical physics. In this project, I questioned this 3-dimensional premise, and explored the possibility of developing an architectural framework by studying and referring to the characteristics of higher dimensional space. The goal of my design is to establish a new set of spatial concepts and methods of interpreting space from the perspective of hyperdimensional space and apply those factors to the architecture in the 3-dimensional world where we live. The study of high-dimensional space should start from two aspects, That is, the spatial dimension and non-spatial dimension 1. The pure spatial dimension is suitable for the form of creation and construction of objects. (Dimensionality reduction: unfold/cross-sections/projections) 2.The non-spatial dimension is suitable for the connection with the site. (From the perspective of time/society/geography)

[Time] & [Geography]

In order to break away from the shackles of 3-dimensional space, I chose a neglected place with conflict and unstable to develop the design, that is, the edge of the 3-dimensional world, as the metaphor and practical location of hyperdimensional space. The site is chosen on an island located between Kinmen and Xiamen where the frontier of China and Taiwan.

Kinmen situates geographically close to China, while ruled by Taiwan politically. It exists in the margins in both contexts.

1/ The incompletion of reproduction. Due to the imperceptibility of the hyperdimensional space, it will always be fragmental in actual world, no matter how we interpret.

Series of Concept Models

The five points of a hyperdimensional architecture

2/ The degradability of the spatial dimension. The transformation from high dimensional to low dimensional space can gradually be translated based on the dimensionality reduction logic.

3/ The transability between various dimension. The transformation of the architectural dimension should not be limited to space, but also non-space dimension.

4/ Mean value of isomorphic elements. The hyperdimensional space that build the equal and same hierarchy relationship between spaces follows the rule of topological space.

5/ The diversity of geometric interpretation. From a perspective of hyperdimensional, some parts of the geometric interpretation of space is different due to the current physical environment is limited and incomplete.

I summarized the previous research results in stages and interpreted them as the "five points of a hyperdimensional architecture" to explore the possibility of application in architectural design

Based on the "five points of a hyperdimensional architecture", a series of conceptual models are developed to gradually extract architectural languages from conceptual models, and then to develop the whole architecture.

Concept Model Study From Drawing & Final Model

Statement The standardisation and mass production brought by the industrial revolution filled our environment with objects. The goal of this design is to dissect the materiality, mechanism, meaning and order of such objects to inform the design of a museum to commemorate them. The development was carried out through the [drawing-concept model-study modelarchitecture] process and analyse the features of the objects step by step, emancipate the form, retain the features and thus construct the final building. The connotation of this building combines both physical and conceptual characteristic of this object. 1.

Connotation Exploration

[Vision / Symbol]

[Reality / Real]

[Slow / Observation]

[Visible / Invisible]

People nowadays exchange fragmented information with minimum time. In this rapid society, human's first sense - vision, becomes a priority. Vision guides ephemeral judgments and derives the symbolic world in the present.

Camera is a tool for recording vision. However, vision only fells on partial realities. This constructed reality tends to be a tool that is deliberately away from the truth and exploited on the contrary.

In order to maximise the value of each film, the photographer's shooting behaviour is delayed. Film photography becomes slow photography. However, in this digital age, photographers instead pick up neglected ideas in past time, photography itself is a kind of dedicated and deliberate observation.

We will not be able to tell if one object exists once it is being covered at the moment of shooting.

[Control / Being Controlled]

[Clear / Blurred]

[Time / Moment]

[Memory / Recall]

Photographer has the right to browses photos and sets the program based on his/ her behaviour. It seems that the camera takes pictures according to the photographer's desire. In fact, the photographer takes pictures according to the camera settings programmed beforehand, the photographer must choose a suitable object to shoot in order to be in accordance with the camera program.

In the process of image recording, the blurred film is not necessarily unclear. Often in the unfocused picture, the integrity is more reflected. In clear pictures, the subject is often defined by the author. To some extent, misleading the audience.

Time is linear and continuous, and the picture is instantaneous, fragmented. In the very moment of the light enters the camera, the linear irreversible time can then be recorded on the film and forms an eternal.

The moment when the shutter is pressed overlaps time and space. The film successfully shortens the distance between us and the outer world that presents it in a plane. The countless intersections form the recurrent point of countless memory, and lead viewers to recall the pasted time. At this moment, the time can be reversed.

Statement

Imaginary Sketch

According to the history, people in this area are mostly from rural villages. Inspired by the contrast between the indifference of human relationship in urban society and close relationship in rural side, I decided to build a cooperative village which featuring the connection between residents, meanwhile replacing the pattern of social housing in Taipei.

Village characteristics research [Traditional Main Hall in Village] Tiny square units, the change is limited.

1. The most important -- Public space

[New Configuration]

I choose rectangle as the basic unit to respond to the tidy and standardization of the Main Hall in the village, hoping to use simple individuals to combine complex and diversified group relationship. Pushing residents to come to the public space instead of staying at home.

Statement Street-House is a traditional architectural style in Lukang, Taiwan. My concept is to create an interconnected space called "interwoven wall", replace the traditional horizontal courtyard with a vertical courtyard. Moreover, hanging substructures as the main space to create a new system for Street-house based on the current situation of the site.
