Poolside Hamilton St.Patrick Park, New York Gsapp First Studio, Summer 2017 Partner: Jipeng Jing Instructor: Mohamad Ziad

In this design, we researched the history of Hamiton Grange and did urban design accordingly. The main concept is reconstructing the partnership between the building and its neighborhood. In its history, it was once used by a church as a small chapel. And that is its most memorable phrase. As the building has been moved into a park, we decide to break the boundary of landscape and architecture in terms of recreating this partnership. There are three main proposals in this urban design: 1. Reconstructing the view of hudson river by building a water center to achieve the similiar visual outcome. 2. Changing the topography in this park in order to creating small villages for bioswale, which also results in the changing context for Hamilton Grange. 3. Using the old techniques from its history when constructing new buildings around Hamiton Grange.

Intro - our architect of analysis is Kisho Kurokawa. His metabolism theory revolves around change and growth. After a thorough study of his designs, we discovered that his theory was translated into two architectural tectonic components - irreplaceable structure and replaceable infill, as we defined. Based on this understanding we selected 9 projects from around 1970s in three different categories.

The site of this project located in the place between the old district and the new one where the skyline is obviously discontinuous. The understanding of “Genius Loci” appears to be specially essential given to the cultural background. I suppose that we should by no means neglect the tendency of city development while focusing on the skyline, city grid, material and the life style of the old community. This design not only calls back old residents’memories, but also guides them to be adapted to the speed and direction of the city renovation.

Higher Level Floor Plan

The slope roof imitates the roof in the old district to keep the continuity of the skyline.

An ally is abstracted from the volume, creating a series of transitional spaces between the interior and the neighborhood. The ally also leads visitors to the roof terrace.

Three towers penetrating the base building respond to emerging residential towers across the road. They also offer higher levels for quieter activities.

The design of this museum is based on the multiple resources of landscape. Morphology of curve responds appropriately to the contour. There are free ramps between the whole and the environment, and cutting or are tangent to the whole shape of the museum. This logic extends to the inner spaces to guarantee the best view along the pathway in the museun. 40

Commercial Landscape Culture

We selected main nodes along Fubu River Road, analyse the portion of landscape, commercial, and cutural sources in order to rebuild the commercial net and landscape pathway.

Commercial Net

Lanscape Pathway

This project is located in Fubu River Road, Changsha. There are two main conflicts to be solved. The first one is that most of the commercial spaces are concentrated in the main road. In this case, the crowds from residential part heavily block the traffic. Moreover, due to the lower terrain and buildings along the road, people can hardly get to the view of the landscapes. Accordingly, we regrade commercial sources and the reconstructed web permeates into nearby places. Meanwhile, we design scenic trail system to utilize landscape sources, integrade commercial web and make essential connection between each part.

In the way of transformation, organic renovation means the gradually transformation of the form of architecture, infrastructure transformation and functions which are unable to adapt to modern economic and social life,in order to keep the sustainable development of the city.

Waterfront Platform According to the landscape resources of Yuelu Mountain, the Post Lake and Xiangjiang River, the concept of bridge enables three spots to be connected and arranged on the axis of the landscape and nodes, People can easily reach different height, enjoy different view, interpersonal communication through the axis of various spots. Urban spaces are connected in three dimensions to achieve the purpose of organic renewal.

Residential Area

Main Road

This project is tower design located between main road and an old residential area. A passage is designed between the tower and the podium to connect the residential area with the city environment. The section of the pasage is quite flexible, leaving people multiple choices for different function in different height. Four layers of the tower becomes one unit, each owns green pathway between layers, as well as open area for activities to happen.

Chimney

1.Fresh air is drawn into the building creating a cooling effect improving the occupants comfort level. 2.Double skin facade responds to outside temperature & environmental conditions enabling natural ventilation mode of operation. 3.As warm air from the building moves up into chimney, fresh air is pulled through the breathable building skin. 4.The sun heated up the solar chinmey, using convention, warm air moves and is exhausted through a roof opening. Spring& Fall: Warm & humid fresh air not optimal for natural ventilation. Double wall allows warm air into cavity creating an insulation layer against heat gain. Chilled beam cooling air falls to the floor replacing warmer air from occupants& equipment. Summer: Fresh air within optimal, temperature, humidity, & quality thresholds. The double wall allows fresh outdoor air into the building. Fresh air flows through the workspace collecting heat from equipment & occupants as it moves towards the solar chimney creating a cooling effect & improving comfort levels. Warm air is drawn into the chimney and rises pulling cool fresh air into the building.

Wetland Park Theater Changsha, China Main theater

Small theater

The site locates in the Western Lake area featuring cultural services, the west side of the lake wetland park adjacent to the east side of Xiang River. Landscape sources especially wetland became the landmark. The theater fits the form of the wetland and Xiang River, imitating two ribbons flowing above the ground. The exterior and interior theaters are connected by one streamline. The entrance plaza and the water are connected by another. Indoor and outdoor space, and the landscape at different heights feature and are combined appropriately.

Fourth Year Studio, Spring 2016 Instructor: Jing Qi

Along with the flowing of the pathway, view of the outside can be seen from the theatre in multiple perspectives, and the exterior landscape contour fit the shape and height of the theatre, thus the whole form becomes a part of the landscape. The architecture is transformed into bridge above rhe water at the end of it, providing people a stage to look forward to the Xiang River.

Unit Revolution

1.Cut off the tip of the triangle 2.Cut off another tip of the trapezoid 3.Cut off the right-angle on the bottom to save material 4.Use two curve surface to shape the form

Reciprocal Structure Changsha, China Vacation Studio, Summer 2015 Instructor: Biao Hu

Form and Function

Each reciprocal structure is a threedimensional framework structure, is composed of a circle of mutual supporting beam, the beam around the tangent layout, the inner end of each girder progressive build above the girder, end was draped over the stigma or outside the main wall. Every square was formed in different angle, providing various spaces for plants to grow.

Rethinking Bim New York Gsapp Third Studio, Spring 2018 Partner: Xiaoyan Hu 1. Wavy Facade: Wavy surface replaces the flat facade of the original buiidling, making its shape organic and natural. 2. Space with Light: The extended space becomes a cave with a light opening for leisure or public activities. 3. Muti-scale Opennings: The scale of opennings changes according to how much radiation it recieves. The more radiation, the smaller the openning will be. 4. Muti-directional Panels: There are max radiation points on the facade because of its wavy shape and the surroundings. Opennings will point into the opposite direction of the max radiation points.

2. Provide site arround the building
