As I further studied architecture and gained design experiences in libraries, art galleries, and residences, I came to realize that architectural structures are much more than spatial containers. Rather, architecture is something that can shape and change human behaviors, and architects shoulder greater social responsibility. Excellent architecture can positively affect its surrounding communities and impart new vigor in them, such as Markthal Rotterdam designed by MVRDV, which has been widely praised as “an important example of city transition.” Markthal Rotterdam is a huge city artwork incorporating residences and a market. It has attracted huge volumes of visitors, reinvigorating Rotterdam, the second-largest city in the Netherlands. As I matured, in my fourth year of university, I began to pursue social values in my works instead. I identified social conflicts and tried to resolve them from the perspective of the functions and space of architecture.

01 HOME FOR THE HOMELESS An Animal-walfare Shelter Shortlisted for the competition "STRAY " held by UNI October, 2020 Location: Bucharest, Romania Instructor: Yufang Zhou Individual Work Habitation was supposed to be a mutual thing. However, humans stand out in the food chain dominating every other organism on the planet. And therefore, they have been exploiting nature in various forms like habitat loss, animal cruelty, factory farming, caging, torture and abandonment. Most of these stray animals have been brutally injured, abused, abandoned on streets by their previous owners. The few lucky ones are taken to the shelter where they live in a confined and unkept place until adopted or they are euthanized due to limited space and low funding. In Bucharest, the capital city of Romania, the problem of strays has been acknowledged for decades. In 2015, the Bucharest City Hall stated that over 51,200 stray dogs were captured between October 2013 and January 2015, with more than half being euthanized. The issue has not only been a heated subject of debate in Bucharest, but also on a nationwide scale. This project is dedicated to providing a shelter for homeless animals, homeless people and soon-to expire food. The main function of this shelter is to adopt stray animals, but at the same time, it provides shelter for the local homeless people, so that they can become the staff of this shelter, work and live in society with dignity.
BACKGROUND | How did everything become homelessness?
The theme of thisv competition is to design a shelter of stray animals in Bucharest, but we found out that the Underground Kingdom for homeless in Bucharest is also world-famous. An estimated 6,000 homeless people live in the network of sewers and tunnels beneath the streets of Bucharest. Therefore, we decide to study homeless animals, homeless people, and homeless food (close-to-expire food) as a whole.

IDEOLOGY | Stray & Tramp
In a documentary about the underground kingdom of Bucharest, I saw the longing of homeless people for a normal life and dignity. Also, many homeless people adopt stray dogs, which inspired me a lot and decided to design a shelter that can accommodate both homeless people and stray. Work makes you respecter, integrated in society, give you reason to live and can even make your life better. -----------Bruce Lee (The king of Bucharest Underworld)

TYPOLOGY AND SPATIAL STRATEGY | Acceptance & equality Traditional Animal Shelter
In the design of traditional stray animal shelters, fishbone spatial structures are usually used for efficiency. The pedestrian walkway in the middle connects rows of kennels. The open space in the middle of the kennel is their activity space.
GENERATION | From underground to above ground
Underground Sewer System
The urban underground pipeline system is usually arranged according to the road. The pipeline is composed of a main pipeline and a secondary pipeline. The radius of the main pipeline is relatively large and people can walk in it. In the underground world of Bucharest, homeless people usually live in such pipes.

The sunken plaza is an outdoor activity and interaction area for human and animals. Here, people who are going to adopt animals can interact and play with animals. At the same time, this is also an outdoor dog training area, where dogs can learn skills such as jumping and running, so that they can better adapt to the future family life.
02
The Lodging strip undertakes the needs of private activities. It has bedrooms, washrooms, meeting rooms for homeless people, which provide them with a safe, comfortable and friendly living atmosphere, allowing them to rest and socialize well, and stimulate their interest in work. There's also kennels for large strays.
03
The restaurant is open to visitors and staff. This is the logistics area, which can handle the expired food stored in the surrounding area, and then provide it to everyone who wants to use after processing. At the same time, there is a small supermarket for daily necessities.

02 CLOUD ATLAS
Film Experiencing and Exhibition Hall October, 2019 Location: Los Angeles, United States Instructor: Siyong Liu Individual Work The Film Experiencing and Echibition Hall is proposed based on the film Cloud Atlas directed by Tom Tykwer, Lana and Lilly Wachowski. Cloud Atlas unfolds with a non-linear narrative with multiple plots occurring during six different eras in time. The story jumps between eras, until each storyline eventually resolves, spanning hundreds of years. Writings from characters in prior storylines are found in future storylines. Characters appear to recur in each era, but change relationships to each other. Slave or abuser often change roles, suggesting reincarnation or other connection between souls through the ages. As an architect and movie lover, I translated the film into architectural form to convey this gorgeous story. The hall represents on a spatial abstraction of the movie's filming techniques, narrative structure and core idea. The building is composed of many small units, which are independent but connected to each other. Visitors can choose their own route during the experience, and each choice will affect the scenery they see next. Therefore, even if everyone comes here with the same purpose, the route of experience may be different. It locates in the Studio Tour viewing area which is the tour route of Universal Studios' movie sets open to tourists.
MOVIE NARRATIVE STRUCTURE 1 TIMELINE, 6 STORIES, 13 ACTORS, 57 CHARACTERS
The story jumps between eras, until each storyline eventually resolves, spanning hundreds of years. Writings from characters in prior storylines are found in future storylines. Characters appear to recur in each era, but change relationships to each other. Slave or abuser often change roles, suggesting reincarnation or other connection between souls through the ages.
In the Chatham Islands, 1849, American lawyer Adam Ewing witnesses the whipping of a Moriori slave, Autua. Autua stows away on Ewing's ship and convinces him to advocate for Autua to join the crew as a free man. Autua saves Ewing's life before his doctor, Henry Goose, can poison him and steal his gold under the guise of treating him for a parasitic worm. In San Francisco, Ewing and his wife denounce her father's complicity in slavery and leave to join the abolition movement.
In 1936, English composer Robert Frobisher finds work as an amanuensis to aging composer Vyvyan Ayrs, allowing Frobisher to compose his own masterpiece, "The Cloud Atlas Sextet". Frobisher reads from Ewing's journal among the books at Ayrs's mansion. Ayrs demands credit for the sextet and threatens to expose Frobisher's bisexuality if he refuses. Frobisher shoots and wounds Ayrs and goes into hiding. He finishes the sextet and shoots himself before his lover Rufus Sixsmith arrives.

In San Francisco, 1973, journalist Luisa Rey meets Sixsmith, now a nuclear physicist. Sixsmith tips off Rey to a conspiracy to create a catastrophe at a nuclear reactor run by Lloyd Hooks, who secretly promotes oil-energy interests. He is killed by Hooks's hitman, Bill Smoke, before he can give her a report as proof. Rey finds Frobisher's letters to Sixsmith, just as Frobisher had found Ewing's journal earlier. Scientist Isaac Sachs passes her a copy of Sixsmith's report. Smoke kills Sachs by blowing up his plane, and then runs Rey's car off a bridge, destroying the report. With help from the plant's head of security, Rey evades another assassination attempt, and Smoke is killed. With a copy of the report from Sixsmith's niece, she exposes the plot and has Hooks indicted.
In London, 2012, gangster Dermot Hoggins murders a critic after a harsh review of his memoir, generating huge sales. Hoggins's brothers threaten the publisher, the aging Timothy Cavendish, for Hoggins's profits. Timothy's brother, Denholme, tells him to hide at Aurora House. On the way, Timothy reads a manuscript based on Rey's story. Believing Aurora House is a hotel, Timothy signs papers committing himself and discovers it to be a nursing home where all outside contact is prohibited; Denholme reveals that he sent Timothy there as revenge for an affair with his wife. Timothy escapes with three other residents, resumes his relationship with an old flame, and writes a screenplay about his experience.
In 2144, Sonmi-451 is a "fabricant", a humanoid clone indentured as a fast food server and implied sex worker in a dystopian Neo Seoul. She is exposed to ideas of rebellion by another fabricant, Yoona-939, who has obtained a clip of the movie about Cavendish's involuntary institutionalization. After Yoona is killed, Sonmi is rescued by rebel Commander Hae-Joo Chang, who exposes Sonmi to the full film version of Cavendish's experience. Hae-Joo introduces her to the leader of the rebel movement, and shows her that clones are when 'freed' are actually recycled into "soap," food for fabricants. Sonmi makes a public broadcast of her revelations before the authorities attack, killing Hae-Joo and recapturing Sonmi. After recounting her story to an archivist, she is executed.
In 2321, the tribespeople of the post-apocalyptic Big Island of Hawaii worship Sonmi; their sacred text is taken from her recorded testimony. Zachry Bailey's village is visited by Meronym, a member of an advanced society called the Prescients. Prescients are dying from a plague. Meronym is searching for a forgotten communication station on Mauna Sol to send an SOS to off-world humans. In exchange for healing Zachry's niece, Catkin, Meronym is guided by Zachry to the station where Sonmi made her recording. Returning home, Zachry kills the sleeping Kona chief and rescues Catkin before he and Meronym fight off the other tribesmen. Zachry and Catkin join Meronym and the Prescients as their ship leaves Big Island.

03 HILLSIDE PARK A Children Activity Center
March, 2020 Location: Guizhou, China Instructor: Siyong Liu, Keren He, Zigeng Wang Individual Work The project was located in Ancient Suhong Village of Yunnan Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture. The villagers there have all been relocated, leaving the village to allow a tourism group to renovate it into a tourist resort that offers various experiences. I proposed designing an educational space for kids for two reasons. First, due to the village’s remote location, the tourists are comprised of families taking short trips from cities, and they bring many urban kids who may not be able to find enough tourist facilities tailored to their age. These urban kids are deprived of access to nature, which has many negative influences on them. Therefore, the unique natural landscape of the village offers a splendid arena for outdoor activities and nature education for them. Second, the educational space could also be used for charity purposes for the poor rural kids living in surrounding areas who have no access to high-quality elementary education and safe activity spaces. These left-behind kids are also highly likely to suffer from various psychological issues due to long-term isolation from their parents during a critical stage. The space could be used to confronting issues faced by both rural and urban kids while generating profits for the resort.

Children's growth needs more than simply food, clothing, reading, parental care, and more attention is paid to the spiritual and psychological needs of children. The concept of children’s activity space is not only focused on playing, but also learning and exploring the world through physical perception during play, helping them to better prepare for and meet unknown challenges, and for urban children, broaden their views on the countryside. And natural cognition, for rural children, stimulate their yearning for a better life and desire for knowledge. For the future of children as the motherland, education has a long way to go.
04 SCHOLAR UTOPIA A Community for Study and Living
March, 2019 Location: London, UK Instructor: John Zhang & David Porter Individual Work Somers Town in London is a community living in the shadows of major infrastructures. It proximity to significant railway hubs offers an appearance of connection, but in fact belies a sense of isolation. The central location of this enclaves and the low income status of its residents make it particularly vulnerable to the negative effects of top-down ‘urban renewal’. The proximity of infrastructure adds further pressure, in terms of physical constraints, and the social and economic consequences, where the strong identity of existing communities must confront the spatial needs of transient and newly arriving demographics. In Somers Town in London, I produce a high-density, low-rise housing proposal, which will seek to establish a new narrative of interaction between existing community, emergent new demographics as a result of top-down regeneration. It functions as a cultural transfer station that would attract active scholars in the vicinity to this residence region. This design also contained cultural export spaces like workshops, a library, and small classrooms in which scholars may offer courses or seminars related to their professions to have their residence fees reduced. By means of this, the scholars act as a catalyst between Somers Town and its cultural development, helping develop an active cultural and educational industry.

SPATIAL PROTOTYPE | The studies of Britain and Chinese courtyard
The English-style courtyard originated from spiritual use for reflection. The Chinese-style courtyard is more practical for life. Therefore, in my design, I hope to combine these two courtyards and their functions to design a community with courtyards as the spatial protorype to meet the studying and living needs of scholars and neighborhoods.
Throughout Chinese history, the siheyuan composition was the basic pattern used for residences. In ancient times, a spacious siheyuan would be occupied by a single, usually large and extended family, signifying wealth and prosperity. Today, remaining siheyuan are often still used as subdivided housing complexes, although many lack modern amenities.
