Project Type: Modular Housing Design Competition (Individual Project) Duration: 6 Weeks | Summer 2018

East Palo Alto, CA, located in the heart of Silicon Valley, is suffering from the challenges of sea level rise and housing crisis. We need an impactful solution to strength the region’s resilience, balance with the nearshore natural aspects and provide a healthy and affordable living space. My strategy is a floating modular housing system with three layers: personal module, community module and urban module. For the future urban ecology, there will not be a clear boundary between human and wildlife. Therefore, the future of our living space should be a habitat for all livings.

Move | Expand

With functional unit modular system, it is possible to move your whole house by dissembling the trapizods and assemble elsewhere.

Assemble on Site

+ ship the whole assembled housing unit

If you have more families living together, simply ordering a stairs module with stairs and other functional modules to expand.

Trays of green roof can be installed and removed easily

Water source heat pump utilizes water as heating and cooling source

Innovative water recycling equipments allow for on-site filtered water utilization and greywater recycling

Ropes for oysters to grow on

Various sizes of engineered rocks and mesh provide hubs for marine organisms.

community module

Based on residents’ number and needs, we would have static green modules, public gathering modules, floating urban farm modules, etc. Also, similar to food trucks that come and go, there will be traveling food islands and clinics.

3

urban module

Overtime, with the modular system, we are solving the problems by dividing them into little problems. An urban renaissance for healthier communities will thrive from the water to the inner lands. The modular system could also be used for retrofitting and rebuilding, which will be the third layer of my design.
