2016.11-2017.1

The study in Shanghai No.3 girls’ middle school has a great impact on me. Back to the school life, I went through a huge growth in personality, being both independent and caring for others. My pieces of work directed more at creating spaces for women. Nowadays, the women’s status is shifting with more of them entering the workplace. However, it is still hard to ignore that gender equality still existed with unrecognized discrimination and prejudice to overcome. Thus, I hope I can do something to help them out by creating a more comfortable working environment with more specific functions. So the thought of designing a women targeted shared office came up in my mind, and I really have passion on completing this project.

BACKGROUND

INSPIRASION FROM OLD FACTORY

This project is an office designed to target at female. As its site used to be a textile factory, in which a lot of women worked in the past, I came up with this idea as to create a Female-friendly environment for the office lady in the modern city. Meanwhile, the project was inspired by my study at girls' middle school and internship in the company.

SITE PLAN

There are some interesting elements in textile mill, which may attribute to the form of space in new office. So I get the shape of the strings and turn it into an important element in my design. Also, as a textile mill, the material that it produces is also the footprint of its growth, which is the precious point that I want to keep.

There are many factory sites along the Suzhou River, and textile factories, as a relatively special factory, were the few factories that mainly recruited many women workers at that time, which is a very important chance for early women to start work. The factory is especially close to the river because of the special features like some functional requirements of its textile factory. Such a historic site is of special significance to the location of a new type of female-targeted office.

Also, with thoughts as I mentioned, the formation of the architecture has been influenced greatly by the concept of "the potted plants wrapped by soft textile.

The design of interior, logically, is based on the process of plant growth. In the whole space, the form of different partitions is kind of accelerating a plant from its bud to its growth and to its flowering finally. Such growth process is inspired from the logic of designing the form of interior, which is composed of the interior of this building.

VARIABLE MEETING ROOM single module The shape of module in the variable meeting space is inspired by the material in original textile factory. Through the rotation of every glass panel, the different size of the meeting space which can hold for 1~5 people come to emerge, making this space unique and special. Meanwhile, planting green plants at the top of the each module makes it look more vibrant from the angle of the view. Besides, due to the variable construction of the module, this area also can be turned into a “weekend market, making the function more diversified.

The reception area takes the responsibility of receiving visitors as well as offering different services in time. The show window (separating inside and outside street) is full up with long strips of silk, providing visitors in the waiting area a relaxing and warm feeling from the soft fabric. And this is a place where can see coffee bar area in the extrusive platform. For the convenience of women users, special children's storage area is set up next to the reception area, so that the clerks in the reception desk can keep an eye on those children easily and provide timely service. Thanks to that, those mothers can be relieved to work completely, and have an access to check their children's situation quickly.

牛 奶 MILK PU 2017.2-2017.4

The nice smell of milk is a commonly shared memory among many of us in our generation in Shanghai. In every morning, the milkman puts fresh ‘bright’ milk into the milk box on the inner door of the lane. Then, housewife goes to take the milk home and boil it, so that children always get up in the fragrance of milk. This scene just repeated daily in old times in Shanghai. And when I was in the supermarket one day and saw cartons of milk, suddenly, the memory of my childhood about milk came up in my mind. Milk is unlike the one now which just like ordinary drink standing on a commodity shelf. So I'd like to create a series of milk stations that offer milk retail services, in which way to refresh people's memories about past life. So this project began with my personal emotion. What's more, I really want to raise people's awareness to the relationship between the people of neighborhood of old time in Shanghai. The life in old lane Shanghai is always started with a cup of hot milk. And milk always seems to be the beginning of a good day. Those typical scenes of life are the prototypes that I make this milk series, hoping to design milk stations by extracting the elements of these life scenes.

LOCATION

INSPIRASION COLLAGE

REFERENCE P

This series of milk station is located in the four areas related to the history of old Shanghai strongly. With four spots together, they can be connected as a story. With different function and shapes, every station has its own characteristic and certain location. One is on the coast of the mother river, Suzhou River, where has a close relationship with the development of Shanghai. And there also has one settled in the neighborhood of residential areas, specially used to arouse the memory of the residents. With display of milk’s characteristics, there will be one in the public area, so that people can participate in interaction of making dairy products as well as creating new memories.

Sometimes, if children get up early and quietly climb up to the dormer, they can see the milkman downstairs riding a bicycle casually with the sloshing milk in the bottles. After the young man in the house went out to work, the old grandfather took out the chair and sat outside the corridor to chat in the sun. The elders are divided. When the young all go out to work, those retired elderly people take out chairs and chat in the sunshine outside the building. As sunset comes, the kids in the neighborhood just play games and have fun together after school.

ELEMENTS INSPIRED FROM OLD PHOTOS This installation gives me a lot inspiration on designing the form of this series of milk stations, as well as the traditional structure of the Shikumen style architecture. On the first sight that I saw this installation, the repeat of using square boxes left a strong impression on me, which reminds me of the milk boxes that can be shown in the same way, thus I get my shape of architectures.

During 1920s ~1930s in Shanghai, the dairy factory was developing at its peak, the scale of milkman was extremely huge. A bulk of cows has been imported to produce milk. Through these past factories, and milk-related items in folk, I gained some inspiration. I also try to arouse the memories of the new generation through this kind of transformation of these old things.

ARCHITECTURE A

EXPLODED DIAGRAM

OVERVIEW This project is made to create a private space for people in modern city to commemorate the memory related to milk in old times. The shape of this building is extracted from the idea of the dormer in the building. In the process of walking up the stairs, people tend to have a sense of their own memories. When you go to the window, people can sit there and meditate. The point of the bottom part of building is to make a Simulation of kids' playing process when jumping from door to door in the past life in Shikumen.

SITE This project is located in a park near Suzhou River, surrounded by residential area. And the residents in this area get used to the crowded ambience. Suzhou River has a special relationship to the milk industry in Shanghai.

The window on the top of the entrance is like the light that guides you to your house as well as in your life.

ARCHITECTURE B

OVERVIEW

EXPLODE

This building is located in the Caoyang Estate, which is a specific kind of new village in Shanghai. Those living in the "estate" neighborhood are actually the first bunch of workers moving out of the "Shikumen" housing. So the elder generation people have the most affection for such a life scene.

The inspiration on this architecture came from another common scene, that everyone gathered together to watch TV after dinner at home while mothers prepared milk for their children before sleep. To show a warm and lively scene, this milk station has one more special function to serve as a temporary community public room, providing activities as film and so on, and promoting the interaction among the neighbors.

It has a symbiotic relationship unity. It is also an important gathering place in the community, used as a place for holding parties in leisure time. Through this munication and connection between residents can be increased ed.

DESIGN EFFECT The movable board connects space with outdoors, both to be used independently when closed and to form a confined space providing residents with an active place to contact. By adding this architecture into this community, I wish to make this community more active and vigorous while creating more memories together.

ARCHITECTURE C

OVERVIEW resifential area It is located in the area outside the residential area, with three sides facing the streets. So this architecture can be accepted by the site, and not only to create more links between indoor and outdoor, but also to makes residents surrounding more contact with it. For this architecture, I try to make it into a condition like it is grown from this land. With all those windows and installations on the walls, the architecture has created as many contacts with streets as possible. I also hope that through this building, people can recall the warm memory that the elders in the neighborhood sitting in front of the corridor and chatting with each other in the leisure time.

INSIDE THE

STROLLING PAINTINGS 2017.4-2017.7 This is a design of the artist’s house, which is equipped with several functions including living, work studio and exhibition. Like a process of a drop of ink springing up in the water, the whole space is conducted with the user’s activities and needs. When the artist goes out for inspiration, the house can be opened as a private museum. Thus, there is a special installations designed for this.

BACKGROUND

DAILY ROUTINE

The artist used to live in the city, and has a lot of hobbies in his personal life. However, the artist wants to get rid of the fast-paced life in city, and he has high expectations on the living standard in the country. Also, he is willing to have a personal studio combined with home, which can be served as a private museum to show his own creation and some of his precious collections in his spare time.

LOCATION

feilds

the village The site is located in the edge of a remote village in Yunnan, where used to be an abandoned workshop. So, the scale of site is quite larger and next to the field, also has its own yard. What’s more, there is a large mountain on the back of the field. Such conditions satisfy the painter’s illusion of living in a wonderland with lake and mountain in the country.

The painter is usually in the bustling city of bustling city. In his life experience, the artist’s personal painting style has also changed, from the traditional, landscape realism, to things have their own understanding, an abstract understanding. The form also shows the daily life of the painter’s rich daily life, including many functions. Life itself is colorful and diverse, and the interpersonal network is also extensive, such a daily life of the late housing design, functional positioning has a certain impact.

RENDERINGS As the most important meeting place after entry, teahouse is the place where people would spend the most time having conversation and so on. In this room, the use of frame scenery is a main point in design. Between the tea room and corridor adjacent to, the facade of that uses glass frame window, to maintain connectivity between the space. When passing through the corridor, the teahouse appears as a painting because of the frame of window. And in the face of the courtyard side also have windows, the scenery outside seems to be like a painting spread in front of the owner and guests.

The facade of chess room is made of wooden shelf, display some master’s collection. And the chessboard is composed of a gradually tapered acrylic board, which symbolizes the master's mental world.

The washing pool is used to clean master’s brushes, which is connected with exhibition room. The wooden grid behind is made to create an atmosphere that water in the pool came from the sky.

SCROLL DRAWING OF BATHROOM As an important place to live and take rest, the design of functional areas such as bathroom is inspired from the traditional roll of painting picture with its axisymmetric view. When it comes to the master bedroom area, the scenes seem to be recorded through the window. Thus, it makes master look like living in the painting effect. In the design of bathroom, through the elevation and declines in space rises in elevation of steps, and the symmetrical design, make whole space sprung up like the traditional roll painting. Also, the living space is more poetic and dramatic at the same time.

DETAILS Wooden Grid In the partition of master bedroom and bathroom, the wooden grid is used to combine with turnover board to meet the function of storage and segmentation. The inspiration of reversal wooden board comes from the way of how the roll painting is opened.

Wooden Light The shape is kind of like the traditional paper light used in the ancient times, which represents a special meaning as a light guiding people in their life.

Narrow Window A beam of light shines in through this slim window, representing the beginning of a new day in users’ life.

By adding the wooden bars, the master bedroom spa a more poetic atmosphere. Meanwhile, painter's life into a simple and natural regression by using wood material.

“bodhi of a flower and one world ,a leaf one This is a very classic sentence from the Buddhist sutra, and the sentence itself has a deep meaning. In a word, we can understand the universe through every little piece like a flower, a man and so on. Everything whether which is small or grand, in the micro world or in the macro world can be seen as a world. When you can reach the true meaning, you will not be entangled in the image of food, nor simply to judge things by the appearance. All things have their own natural Buddha nature, but the ordinary people do not have the ability to see it. When you have a micro - and macro - change eye, you'll find yourself an ant on a big macrocosm flower. When you have all kinds of things, they are all equal and have the idea of Buddha nature. When you realize everything and their joy and pain, you will be tolerant and satisfied, and will not care about any small gains or losses. For many historical reasons, Chinese people seem to tend to hide their religious beliefs at many times. But it can't be said that the Chinese have no faith inside. On the contrary to this fact, the religious buildings in China are generally very solemn and significant. Religious belief actually is also a very private and serious matter for Chinese people. In a recent lecture, a graduate student from the first-pier University in China, Tsinghua University, introduced a temple named "grandmother Temple" in the village. The facilities and shapes of the "grandmother Temple" brought people a special change in religious architecture. The topic “Grandmother Temple" also leaded to a heated debate. Usually, for this kind of folk "copycat" religious buildings, people may just laugh it off. But the analysis from this graduate student shows that it contains the value and significance of religion in the life of the Chinese, which also alerts me the possibilities in the new way of constructing religious buildings.

BACKGROUND

SITE PLAN

The background is based on a heated topic, "grandmother Temple" , which inspired me to explore the new form of religious architecture. At this time, a new and interesting phenomenon of “grandma’s temple” has come into people’s view. In some rural areas, local people builds their own temples to meet their spiritual needs.

What the main point inside this event is that the form of the religious building adapted to people’s demands received a huge success (according to its economic ‘income’ and the population it has attracted). It raises a question that is it time to change now? Whatever the answer is, the existence of the "grandmother Temple" reminds me of that the form of folk culture can make religious buildings have more development possibilities. it provided a possible direction in design in the spiritual buildings like this. Apart from the original form, such spiritual buildings may exist in different forms in different places.

TRADITIONAL LAYOUT OF THE TEMPLE

The traditional layout of the temple is highly enormous and magnificent, which still remained a huge building complex until now, of which arrangement has strong sense of sequence and hierarchy. As a result, the amount and the location of temple have been restricted due to its large scale of buildings to some extent.

INSPIRA

As a discussion on the new form of religious architecture, it is based on some subversion of the old form. Therefore, it is different from the traditional temple, which covers a large area and be in a large scale. Because of the small size of the building, it can be placed in every spot of the city. It gives accesses to meet the needs of religious beliefs, to a certain extent, especially for those people who can’t go to the suburbs or relatively remote areas of the religious buildings. Not only in the city, it can also be served as a rest spot in the mountains.
