Introduction: During those school years, I was taught, “there is only one right answer. Fortunately, that did not restrict my imagination and creativity, because I started to think independently at a very young age. Actually, being creative is such a large part of who I am and my inspiration comes from books, photos, movies, and life experience. I am dedicated to absorb new knowledge and I am live to learn. My grandfather is a gifted artist and he has influenced my potential. I learned from him to be passionate, confident and keep aiming for higher goals. I am grateful, as I can help world make smarter decisions.

01 Commercial Design Potrero Hill Library

Concept: Bird’s Nest Key words: Nature, Family, Sustainability

The project is located at a residential area and there is high percentage of families in this area. For birds, nests are their homes, and they mean family for them. In this way, we want to use nests to convey the idea of family.

This library has a very good view of downtown San Francisco. Therefore, when you see the view from inside of the library, you will feel like that you are watching the city from a forest on the top of mountian that outside of city. Nests are made of branch, so they are natural and sustainable. Therefore, our concept of nests also convey the idea of sustainability.

BRAND STRATEGY Potrero Branch is a critical and free source of educational and recreational programming and resources. For the library to remain relevant, it must adapt to meet the current and anticipated needs of Eastern Neighborhood - from combating illiteracy, unemployment and the digital divide, to cultivating entrepreneurship, creativity and civic engagement. Now more than ever, the Library must be flexible, dependable and well equipped to support the Neighborhood. We identified six major goals, centered on education, access, culture, inclusion, space and stewardship. Eastern Neighborhood is a diverse and dynamic borough that is home to more than 100 thousand people, including a growing creative community, large immigrant population and many residents who have limited access to technology. Potrero Branch’s Collections need to reflect and support their unique neighborhoods. For example, Potrero Branch provide limited children’s Spanish and Chinese language collections. By nurturing community ties and keeping abreast of demographic trends, we will provide highly customized, focused and responsive services to Eastern Neighborhood.

Concept: Connection Key words: Sustainability, Connection, Relationship, Organic In the future, people will spend more and more time on the internet. However, the digital world will not change how people connect with each other, rather, their connection is strengthened further by new technologies. I hope that one day, the bookstore can become a place that people can meet and connect with each other, then we can witness the revival of bookstore industry.

MOOD BOARD

LOCATION Location: Mission District, San Francisco The Mission District, also commonly called “The Mission”, is a neighborhood in San Francisco, California, USA, originally known as “the Mission lands” meaning the lands belonging to the sixth Alta California mission, Mission San Francisco de Asis. This mission, San Francisco’s oldest standing building, is located in the northwest area of the neighborhood.

Food

Music scene

The Mission district is famous and influential for its restaurants.

The Mission is rich in musical groups and performances. Mariachi bands play in restaurants throughout the district, especially in the restaurants congregated

Murals

around Valencia and Mission in the northeast portion of the district.

Throughout the Mission walls and fences are decorated with murals initiated by the Chicano Art Mural Movement of the 1970s and inspired by the traditional Mexican paintings made famous by Diego Rivera.

Art scene Numerous Latino artistic and cultural institutions are based in the Mission.

J I A N I N G H E User Strategy

In the future, people will spend more and more time on the Internet. The form of reading has become very flexible: people can actually read digital books or on smartphone, tablet, or laptop everywhere, such as on the bus or in subway. Reading occurs during spare time between one thing and another; reading occurs when you are waiting for the elevator; reading occurs when you are in the restroom. You should no longer expect that people will go out for a trip to the bookstore specifically. So, the charm of the bookstore alone will not be able to attract customers to the store, it is unrealistic. However, the digital world will not change how people connect with each other, rather, their connection is strengthened further by new technologies. I hope that one day, the bookstore can become a place that people can meet and connect with each other, then we can witness the revival of bookstore industry. Bookstore should be located at a nice place not far away from home; it should appear in the corner; it should be warm; should be able to shelter you from rain. In the future, we should tell people: Let’s meet at the bookstore.” Bookstore should not be a place that you can only stand there, it should enable you to sit down and slow down. You can think, read, talk, write in the bookstore, and you can exchange ideas with other people. A bookstore is a “Sofa”, that can easily “wrap” your thoughts. What can happen inside a bookstore is a lot more than a café. Such role of connection will give bookstore new vitality.

PERSPECTIVE RENDERING

Introduction: In this book store design, I used a lot of wood structures in order to offer customers a comfortable and natural feeling. The large glass windows can provide the maximum natural lighting and the layout of bookcases is inspired by DNA’s hexagon shape. The display features near the entrance present the latest and most popular books and magazines. Cashier desk is also close to the entrance, to facilitate the booklending process and answering of customer inquiries.

PERSPECTIVE RENDERING

Introduction: The strong contrast between Dark and light wooden bookcases increases the level sense of the interior space. The 3D Characters on each bookcase help customers to distinguish different types of books. The 3D ceiling design is inspired from the concept of connection and its DNA chromosome colors aim to remind people that this is a new era in which they are increasingly interconnected.

PERSPECTIVE RENDERING

Introduction: The layout of this bookstore can guide the customers’ circulation and its environment provides a relatively quiet reading area. The selection of chairs also follow the concept of the hexagon. The layout make people move easily around from different directions in the bookstore, which will enhance connections between people and provide an opportunity for them to understand each other.

SECTIONS

EXTERIOR Introduction: Bookstore’s exterior maintains a simply design style. Large glass walls can provide abundant natural light to showcase. Bookstore’s logo is placed in the most conspicuous place. White exterior walls contrast strongly with colorful interior space, thereby arousing curiosity of people to find out more.

Furniture: The choise of furnitures is consistent with the bookstore’s design style. For example, the book showcase adopts the hexagonal shape; the upper level can be used to dispaly the latest and most popular books, while the lower level can be used for storage. Cashier desk’s design uses a simple wooden structure with an eye-catching store logo. Reading chair design also uses hexagonal structure, enabling customers to sit and read facing different directions.

Introduction: I used dark wood and glass for floor covering and there are sands under the glasses. I want the customers to feel that its a beach holiday and the store has a relaxing shopping atmosphere. Old Navy’s logo is placed in the most prominent position with spotlights illuminated.

J I A N I N G H E

Introduction: Ceiling materials are colored transparent plastic plates and formed wave shapes. Part of the drop - down ceiling structure is used to separate different areas. There is a barrier between the fitting room and sales area to provide a private space. The most fashionable clothes or the latest style s are near the fitting rooms. In this case, even if customers do not like clothes that they chose, these new clothes may change their minds.

Introduction: Cashier is located in the center of the store, it is convenience to the customers to process transactions and request information. Cashier is an extension of the drop down ceiling structure. Part of the cashier is used to display the fashion clothes.

Daylight Daylighting refers to using natural light to illuminate a building. This controlled admission of natural light into a space through glazing is used to reduce or eliminate electric lighting. By utilizing solar light, daylighting creates a stimulating and productive environment for building occupants.

Courtyard Courtyards provide open-to-sky, outdoor space away from the public eye. The central void became a connecting volume between floors with visual, audio and physical link maintaining a rapport with vertically segregated floors. For the climactic feature, the hot air rises and escapes the building through the court. It also creates draft of air by providing pressure difference and inducing inward draft of cool air through lower level Jali windows. Court is an integral system of built, of light, air, sun and vegetation.

05 Modern Design Domino House Design

Concept: Light & Shadow Key words: Nature, Family, Sustainability, Light

I learned a lot of interesting things from some famous architects such as Le Corbusier and Tadao Ando. All of these great designers gave me a really clear direction about how to design a residential space. From their famous projects, I realized that how to control and use daylighting is quite necessary in residential space. So, in my design project, I focused on how to control and use the daylighting and the shadow.

The Domino Frame: The Maison Domino is a basic building prototype with freestanding pillars and rigid floors. This is what was described by Le Corbusier, famously, as “a machine for living in.” A grid defines the layout of the structure. Steel columns are located at the centers of the intersections of the gridlines. The column layout creates modular spaces. Floors, ceilings, and the roof are made of reinforced concrete. A steel staircase allows vertical movement through the spaces. Walls are for enclosure and/or separation; openings are for entrance and exit, or to let in light or air, and views are all undefined. The Maison Domino should form the basis for my own design.

THE DOMINO FRAME ”Space and light and order. Those are the things that men need just as much as they need bread or a place to sleep.”

Le Corbusier

Objective Design a house for an unmarried couple. Both partners are successful modern artists. They have no plans for marriage or kids over the next few years, and intend to live in this house for at least two years. They have purchased a site in the Berkeley/Oakland Hills that was never redeveloped after the devastating fire in 1991 that destroyed approximately 2,500 single-family dwellings. On the site there is an existing rigid steel frame, which was built to withstand earthquakes with no additional bracing. Ironically, it has been covered with concrete fireproofing. It bears an unmistakable resemblance to the seminal Le Corbusier drawing of the Domino Frame.
