ORTFOLIO

Hello,

My name is Jianna Palm, and I am from Carlyle, a small town in southern Illinois. Currently, I am a third-year student attending Kansas State University majoring in Interior Design and a member of iDesign which is the interior design club at K-State.

The iDesign club selected me to be one of the class represenatives to communicate industry information, events, and future and past meeting information to those in the interior design program.

Throughout the years of interior design, I learned hand drafting and rendering skills. Most of my current project renderings inlcude a digital work through AutoCad, Revit, Enscape, and Photoshop. Take a walk through my most current projects throughout the past years.

FIRM

Another project is the Next design project which is a commerical interior design office project for the 2023 Steelcase Design Competition. The project was designed during my fifth semester at K-State.

The main focus for the project was on the well-being of the company’s employees. The design firm fosters wellbeing by having spaces that allow their empoyees to recharge their energy with spaces for personal work and social connections. These strong connections with the design teams and main working spaces creates a sense of community within the work place.

The skills used for this project were concept development, space planning, hand sketching, AutoCAD, Revit, Enscape, Photoshop, and InDesign.

CONCEPT LOCATION

Dallas, Texas

Dallas is the 3rd largest city in Texas and has a continuous growing population due to a migration from other states.

The city of Dallas is full of innovators, growing businesses, rapidly growing economy, and a mixture of diversity.

The building is uniquely situated with immediate proximity to Uptown Dallas, Downtown Dallas and the Dallas Design District where people can eat, shop, and explore the area.

Encouraging Positive Energy by Focusing on the People First

Without the people of Dallas, none of this would be possible. The energy of the people creates a connection and makes Dallas the flourishing city that it is today. Similarly, atoms are fundamental pieces of matter that make up everything in the universe. An atom is one singular thing but has multiple parts that sustains its functioning. The nucleus of an atom is the central part which is made up of protons and neutrons surrounded by electrons.

NEXT design office has many parts, but it is centered on the people and the connections that the spaces have with each other.

COLOR THEORY

The tones and hues of colors have an effect on the design and atmosphere of a space. They also have a large effect on the wellbeing and mental health of those using the space. The colors used in a space can represent a company’s culture, symbolism, and personality.

Color can be used as wayfinding and separation of spaces based off of the task.

Coral symbolizes positivity and warmth. It empowers and welcomes those who interact with the color.

Yellow symbolizes positivity, joy, and happiness.

Blue symbolizes peace, calm, and serentity.

The mezzanine is mostly enclosed with walls of windows instead of making the mezzanine open to the main floor. This is in concern for the acoustics of the space. Enclosing with a wall of windows allow for the employees to have sitelines to the main floor and natural light from the exterior windows. It also allows those working on the mezzanine floor to have privacy from the movement and public spaces of the main floor.

This project was created during my second year; it is a pediatric center project and one of my first experiences with healthcare design. The project is a pediatric center in Topeka, Kansas, that offers services for the patients and the parents.

It is also one of the first projects designed using digital programs like AutoCAD, Revit, Enscape, Photoshop, and InDesign. The furniture, finishes, and equipment is commercial and ADA.

18 PEDIATRIC CENTER

CONCEPT

A Ripple Through Time

A ripple is created because of the movement of water. This movement continues throughout the body of water.

The concept of this pediatric office is a “ripple through time”. The main focus of the ripple is the continuity.

Patients can continue to attend this pediatric center throughout their lifetime from infants to growing young adults. The organization of space has a continuous movement througout the pediatric center.

ON STAGE OFF STAGE

On Stage/Off-stage spaces are common within medical facilities. This allows the patients to enter from one“public corridor area” and the med/ staff to access from the back areas.

The self-rooming design provides separate access to the exam rooms and can have dual access to patient rooms.

The next project was created during my third year. This is a residential project for a shipping container tiny house located in Manhattan, Kansas. It is used for a professor whose primary residence is in Kansas City. The client has a home in both locations and needs a space where he can stay when teaching during the week. The skills used for designing this project were digital programs like AutoCAD, Revit, Enscape, Photoshop, and InDesign.

26SHIPPING CONTAINER

CONCEPT

ADAPTABILITY + SUSTAINABILITY

The client is going through a major lifestyle change where he will have to adapt to the changes. It is important for the design of the space to be able to adapt with the client based off his needs. The main design goal for the shipping container design is to make the space adaptable for the client. The spaces are designed with builtins that can have multiple functions and adapt to the needs at a specific time.

SOLAR ENERGY

Solar panels are located on the top of the roof to passivley generate electricity. The panels run off of the sun’s rays and generate an electrical current.

GREEN ROOF

Sustainable technology where natural rain water waters the grass on the roof. The grass creates a thermal layer on the roof which regulates the temperature. ssive cooling.

During the summer of 2023, I went on a study tour to Italy with the K-State Interior Design Program. We went to Rome, Naples, Sorrento, Orvieto, Florence, Siena, Ravenna, Venice Padova, and Vicenza.

The details seen throughout all Italy are innumerable. No matter what style of architecture, the buildings had their own unique details. The unique details are seen in both exteriors and interiors of the spaces. The doors of Italy were often rounded especially in the small hill towns. Arches were everywhere in Italy. The windows often had shutters on the outside which could be shut or opened. The ceilings of Italian buildings were not neglected but were used as another surface to design as art. The ceilings of the cathedrals were often elaborately designed with gold sheets and beautiful frescos.

32 ITALY STUDY TOUR

ST. IVO

The St. Ivo alla Sapienza is a famous Roman Catholic church. This cathedral is in the Baroque style. It is located in Rome, Italy.

The cathedral shows examples of motifs used continually throughout the space. Eight point stars, flowers, laurel wreaths, and tiles are seen througout the interior of the space. This church was designed by Francesco Borromini.

DUOMO DI SIENA

The details pictured are from the main central dome and exterior of the Siena Cathedral.

The gothic style includes many intricate details along with elaborate decoration.

The Siena Duomo is located in Siena, Italy. These attributes are seen in many of the basilicas and cathedrals.

The sketch is of the front elevation of the cathedral.

34

MEDICI PALACE

The Medici family is a famous wealthy family of Italy who had many places and cathedrals built. The arched openings and statuary is often seen in renaissance architecture. The Medici Palace is located in Florance, Italy. The interiors of the palace are elaborately decorated. Sketched is a renaissance chair and motifs unique to the Medici Palace.
