Week 3: • Activity: case study site visit One of this week’s activities is that we visited the ERC, MSLE, Queens Collage and Ormond Theology Centre Reception. The common factor among ERC, MSLE and Ormond Theology Centre Reception is that the construction links two old buildings together. ERC:

It is clear to see that the type of construction of it is frame construction. The material steel is the main resource to form the structure especially the roof. As for the floor, the material it used is concrete. It uses large-size glass to fill the gap of the frame structure which provide a good condition of receiving daylight. By looking at the outside, it is easy to consider the material that has been used to construct the entrance is steel. However, the material it is used is zinc which is locked to each other by curving them. When it come to inside, the cantilever structure is very obvious as it is shown in the red circle in the image above. The construction type is frame construction. The dimensions of this building is about 3m wide with 2 stories.

This building is the example of mass production which is structured accumulatively. As for the inner construction, it uses frame construction as this approach saves materials and space. Steel is mainly used for this frame construction since the mass construction is really heavy.

Ormond Theology Centre Reception:

This building is constructed in frame construction. The entrance is framed by steel and glass which provides a good view from both inside and outside. On the other side of the building, there are 4 concrete columns which support the roof. The roof is a frame product by using beams. And also the outside wall indicates that clay bricks are been used which represents that the mass construction of the old building. The dimensions of this building is about 6 metres high which is about 2 stories, and 6 metres wide.
