[ Green Earth ] ‘Green Earth’ is a non for profit organization that carries out inter-disciplinary research and community outreach focusing on the development and dissemination of sustainable strategies. The organization mission includes the generation of knowledge based on unprogrammed interaction including specialists from a variety of disciplines of biology, engineering, design, planning, economics, sociologists etc. The workspaces will therefore combine individual permanent workstations with think-tank spaces dedicated to teamwork and exchange of ideas. From the site analysis I notice the junction of 5th St and Spring St is very important, so I decide to put main entrance and plaza at south side. Atlanta is a southern city which has much more sunshine than northern cities, that is why I design the fabric louver on the west and south side to avoid overheating, and from the precedent of sendai media center by Toyo Ito, I get a inspiration that use vertical skylight shaft to allow north side daylight mainly reflect into the building, and four of the skylight shaft which at the east side have vertical circulation function as a core. The biggest one at the west side is also uesd as a ventilation chimney as well as an entrance. I organize the interior space into different type of area in order to serve for different department, and each department has unique think-tank spaces which seperates from other individual and open spaces. It will create a specific private space for people to communicate in group.

The flow of pedestrians in context mainly moves around site from 5th Street to Peachtree Street. The second flow is moving outward from Midtown to Georgia Tech. Base on the above reason, most of the activity areas are along 5th Street.

The right area is Midtown of GA. The buildings here are ordered but sporadic. The region to the left is Georgia Tech, here the form is more organic and sprawls with less density than midtown.
The primary streets offer the highest quality connectivity to the rest of the city. The secondary roads connect to primary, while tertiary roads allow further connection to specific destinations.
This map show an increase in building height towards midtown and in particular Peachtree Street. There is also a slight increase in size along Interstate 75/85.

Physical Model Study Process
1. This small casting model is used to analyse the position of skylight shafts and how it will influence the entire space.
2. After previous analysis, I try to add some think-tank spaces that interact with these skylight shaft.
3. This third model is more organized and systematic which come near to my final model.

Rebuild and Reuse Design: Residential Community Master Thesis Work Site: Beijing Date: 2017
Using a site adjacent to Beijing’s White Pagoda temple complex, the project will propose a new a innovative community that consist of several rebuilt and reused Chinese vernacular residential units, the final goal will achieve a vital, dynamic, and high performance community that meets the needs of modern Chinese society and is responsive to the climate of Beijing. Further, I propose a new wall structure called a “tile wall� to combine existing and new material so that make people recall a series of Chinese traditional memory. The tile wall re-uses historic building materials from structures beyond repair in the construction of new cladding. This approach makes the most of an existing resource, while creating a cultural and material connection to the historic hutong construction of Beijing.

Exhibition of Specific Collection: Museum Studio Work Site: Midtown of Atlanta Date: 2015
[ Biological and Mechanical Sky Well ] Museums are the present day embodiment of our curiosities, fascinations, fantasies, and general desire to collect. They produce opportunities to experience diverse cultures, artistry, society, history, and more. Over time, however, these institutions have become increasingly sterile in the name of creating clean canvases to display these vast collections. The architecture and space is more a backdrop, one of blank expression and one that does not complete with the work displayed. While advantageous to the display of any sort of work of art, object, or article why cannot architecture encourage interaction with the object? This museum is located beside Peachtree and 3rd St NE. It is designed specifically based on eight collections that I choose. Four of them are biological objects such as nautilus, colorful specimen, the other four are mechanical objects, like prosthetic leg, prosthetic hand, wheelchair, etc. My concept is use natural light and material for the biological gallery and artificial light and material for the mechanical gallery. Because of that, my solution is to use seven light wells that lead natural light to the basement floor for biological gallery which will create a mysterious and natural environment. The second floor for mechanical gallery cannot get much sunlight from the light well, so the experience is more cool tone and full of artificial ambient. And the first floor is the functional space, it has reception area, administration office, archive space, and an open workshop space.

[ Wooden Weave ] Activate the Courtyard: Small Tower 4th Year Design Work Site: Downtown of Atlanta Date: 2015 38
[ Wooden Weave ] The ‘Tribute Lofts’ are apartments that sit in the heart of Atlanta along a major highway. The inner courtyard between the north and south building is where the small tower located. The special point of this courtyard is that it is on the third floor of this apartment and it has a green area in the center, but only the green plants cannot create the ‘place’ for residents. My main idea of this wooden tower is to combine two different spaces together which ground floor is a close space for private activity, the second floor is a open space for public activity, and ground floor also can get nice daylight from the octangle skylight. The prototype comes from two basic geometry which are triangle and ellipse, I cut the triangle chamber in half and then use ellipse-like timber weave to create second floor space.

[ Big Family ] A New Way to Live Together: Apartment 4th Year Studio Work Site: Downtown of Atlanta Date: 2014 40
[ Big Family ] The client is an attorney in his late 50’s. He is a successful international industrialist having offices in New York, Dubai, Singapore and Malaysia. He has three sons. First two sons are twins in their mid-20s; one has a law degree from England and the other has a business degree from Australia. Both of them are about to get married. The third is a college going who loves soccer. They all live in a two-story house with 6 bed rooms for last 25 years. Although the client strongly patronizes being together with all three sons as a joint family, the living pattern of sons does not support the concept of the family value as perceived by client. This conflicting perception of social values between sons and their parents had led to think of individual apartment living away from each other and in more than one location. At an effort of maintaining the concept of living together as one family with having freedom of individual modern apartment living the client has asked for a design of a multi-floor apartment building that will house four families and still leave room for expansion. The main idea about this apartment is to separate the space into public area and private area, and set the core at the center so that to create different level in a same apartment module. Residents can see the good view of the public area when they stand at private area. And there is a plaza at the ground level, it integrates with lobby nicely. The car circulation is at the north side, when they drive along the ramp, they can enjoy the nice view of plaza. This building also adopt some sustainable ideas. The narrow shape of the building can reduce the wind pressure on the surface, and air go through into the interior for cooling the whole building system. Based on the previous work, I use the organic structure on the west side, it not only makes a interesting relax area for interior but also as a green wall, it can reduce the heat at summer. On the south side, I design a curved shading skin, it makes the building have very amazing experience of light and shadow, and the main function of this skin is designed for blocking more sunlight in summer.

Physical Model Study Process
1. I use a waterdrop-like module as a start point to build the model for analysing the structure and skin.
2. For the second model I try to create opening on the double side of the module to analyse space.
3. In the third model I attempt to apply two different but similar skin together and let them interact with each other.
In the final model, one skin becomes a green wall and ralates to interior space, the other is as a shading system to avoid too much sunlight come into interior in summer.

[ CLT Tower ] A Wood Innovation Center for CLT Studio Work Site: UW Seattle Campus Date: 2016 45
[ University of Washington Center For Wood Innovation ] The mission of the UW Center for Wood innovation is to inspire interest, research, and development in the world of low carbon design with a focus on sustainable forestry, mass timber, and CLT. The UW Wood Innovation Center wants to speak the language it encourage: a place for collaboration and vision made with an modernized wood building system.
What is CLT?
Dimension lumber is edge-glued to form a sheet. The sheets are then glued together in layers and oriented at right angles to the adjacent sheets, similar to plywood. The final CLT panel is usually made up of an odd number of layers (3-7). CLT panels have thicknesses of up to 20 inches and panel lengths up to 60 feet.
Why Use CLT?
CLT offers numerous advantages over steel and concrete as a building material including: 1. Lower construction costs (between 14%-50% lower) 2. Faster construction time (between 25%-65% lower) 3. CLT buildings are lighter and require smaller foundations 4. CLT buildings have excellent seismic performance (a 7 story CLT building survived 14 consecutive seismic tests of magnitude 7.2 in Japan with no structural damage) 5. Good fire resistance (panel exteriors develop a char layer which acts as an insulator and resists fire spread) 6. Superior thermal performance and energy efficiency (the thermal insulating ability of a 7 inch thick CLT panel is 10 times greater than concrete and masonry and 400 times that of steel) 7. Superior carbon sequestration: CLT panels are carbon negative and store carbon whereas steel and concrete buildings are carbon positive.
