CHAPTER 2.0: COMPANY BACKGROUND CHAPTER 2.1: INTRODUCTION OF COMPANY

Address: Bangungan Pedagangan D7, Sentul. Email: info@zlgdesign.com

Zlgdesign was set up some 20 years ago by two architect both trained in London under the banner of zeidlerlim design. Susanne Zeidler had worked and studied under sir Peter Cook in London and Frankfurt, and later at the Bartlett, London, whereas Huat Lim trained at the Architectural Association London, and then went on to work at foster and partners in the UK (at the time the chelsea reach offices had not yet been built) in 1984 and for foster france at the time, in Nimes, south of France. zlgdesign has a philosophy of work that is largely based on research, examination, critique and exploration of cutting edge issues, among the current pursuits are sustainability and energy concerns. These have become deeply rooted in their work. All projects begin with thoughtful research and development of unique and exclusive concepts without compromising the quality of the execution, meaning there is commitment in putting adequate resources to each project undertaken, no matter how small the budget. Documentation has also become a big part of what zlgdesign work culture, and has over the years become almost a customary procedure, as they pride themselves in executing these most expeditiously and with great passion. ("zlgdesign", 2017) “In 1992 when Susanne and me started thinking of doing competitions our focus was only design and ever since our work revolved around ideas and concepts that go beyond what was then always a predefined architectural pursuit or entity. We had simply wanted to do architecture that would not only engage the human spirit, but also something with a deep philosophy behind the work. Up to this day, there has been a little problem I have to solve in my head, and that is that I think architecture is taking much longer to becoming like what good art is, it is not so generative and it is not always assuming an emotive role, like a good work of art does. We think that it is possible for us to connect to our buildings as easily as we can connect to art, or to our music, or to things that we adore, like our children or our books.

CHAPTER 3.0: INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE Throughout the 10 weeks of internship training program, the company zlgdesign provided opportunities to be involved in projects ranging from predesign & schematic design phase, design development phase, permit application, contract documentation phase and contact administration phase. Langkawai Hotel is the first project that I’ve been involved to ever since I started with internship. The site selected by client is located right adjacent to the seashore, where the future development of Langkawi Hotel lies in a big patch of greenscape that makes a complicated topography to the site. In order to bridge in an immediate connection between the landscape and building, I’ve been assigned to make a few study model that would aids on the design process of Langkawi Hotel.

Photo 3.1.1 shows the sketch model of Langkawi. There are a few amendment changes during the design development. The sketch model at first was designed to have a sharp geometry, where its edgy form does not compatible with the adjacent landscape. Hence, the second sketch model has been designed to have a curvy blend which blends in the building and the environment effectively.

Senawang project is the second task that I’ve been receiving ever since I came to the office. It is a humongous development project which includes six building blocks in an empty land situated in Senawang. The development of the project includes designing 3 blocks of townhouses, three blocks of apartments, 2 facilities building, 1 block low cost apartment together with the landscape. The task I’ve been assigned in this project is to build a physical model which would shows the connection of the building to the outer context, which includes the temperature and climate, and how it contributes the comfort level of the users.

Photo 3.2.1 shows the sketch model of Senawang project. According to the office, the car park level of the building has been elevated in order to allow ventilation to the building, making the whole building having full openness to the surrounding. Afer finishing the physical model, the office has realize that the difference in the topography levels might breaks all the building blocks apart into different heights, hence it might not be able to sustain with a flat platform itself. Hence, the office has decided to change their design scheme of the decking which is used to connect all the building blocks.

Photo 3.2.2 shows the physical model of Senawang project. The platform lies beneath the center blocks indicates the decking which functions as connector to link residents in different blocks. Other than physical model itself, I’ve been assigned to design and prepare the elevation of block B townhouse, together with both side of apartment of building blocks E for the tender meeting.

Photo 3.2.3 shows the elevation of Townhouse Block B4-B6 facing inwards. There are two design scheme for the elevation. The one facing towards the inner blocks and the one facing outwards to the landscape. Huat Lim, the director of zlgdesign has provided the team a direction of what he wants for the residential to experience in the building, brick faรงade which presents a solid skin at the same time creating bits of porosity that allows the residents to get engage to the community in Senawang.

My task for the project is to amend the page layout and edit pictures according to the author’s personal preferences. As for abc book, it is the book that was once being published years ago by zlg. However,

Huat has decided to rearrange the book from A3 square size into A5, hence, I was assigned to design and rearrange the layout accordingly.

CHAPTER 4.0 CONCLUSION This internship program has increased my understanding on how the construction field functions together as one in order to build a building in real life. It starts off from meeting with the clients, going through design process and dealing with authorities over and over again. Architecture that involves in more than mere design and drafing, and also office paper work. My colleagues and directors has helped me a lot to improve my sensitivity towards actual size in real. Thanks to zlgdesign, I’ve learnt a lot of knowledge that would never been told in school.
