Focusing on the rooftop space of the old city buildings, which is like a second ground for the city, the residents engage in various activities on the rooftop, and the small stories in the background of the big city are vividly interpreted. These roofs are usually unlocked and accessible to all residents. So the roofs are also somewhat like courtyards, but in the air.

Modern Art is a very minority focus in CHINA.

Then, three different art categories are designed for three different venues according to the distribution and preferences of different age groups.

Over 60% of Chinese artists are learning traditional calligraphy &Chinese painting.

By researching the type of activity and frequency of occurrence on the roof level versus the ground level, I tried to find sites where ground level activity was very abundant and bring ground level activities to the roof level.

Chinese art gallerys are usually not patient enough to cultivate a young artist more than 2 years, so lots of artists get abandoned if they cannot get famous very soon.

DaFen Villeage is a Hakka Village based in ShenZhen, this place is famous for its imitations of well-known oil paintings. Comparing its Artistic Creation and the Selling Process with the Western way, we can find out that everything is working on street, disorderly but alive. Lots of young artists cannot sell their own work, so they come to this place and make a living imitating famous paintings.

Site Selection / Analyze The ground floor of the village is so crowded, so there is no enough space for public events. But we can explore the roofs to make connections . Keeping the structure and facade of the original buildings, i want to create some kind of view for citizens to show them the history of this young city.

The scale of the residential buildings in the urban village varies greatly, as does the difference in height of the roofs. Depending on the height difference, different strategies are used to connect the roofs.

A series of Visual-Art-Workshops connect the individual residences in a dotted form, enlivening the roof space while creating a continuous space for artistic experience.

The huge corridor is supported by a group of thin columns connecting the roofs of the buildings around the square, where people can ride their bicycles on the main road or watch the view from where the corridor rises. The painting workshop follows the form of the gallery and hangs beneath its structure.

People enter the Handicraft workshops from the café and bookshop on the ground floor by lift, This has enlivened an already abandoned site.

It is even somewhat transparent, which makes it look like one is walking through a fog. And it is interesting to see how the image behind the fabric becomes twisted and distorted when the wind blows.

The floor-to-ceiling and overhanging walls correspond to the height of the fabric, respectively, and these are determined by the depth of sleep. Students have a good quality of life in Guangzhou, not only do they often participate in sports on campus, but they also go out for entertainment activities. They have some local friends but are used to hanging out with people of their own race.

Background info. After Europe, America, Japan and Korea, China has become a new target for African migrants who come to this continent to do business, study and live. But it seems to me that the Chinese acceptance of these new immigrants leaves much to be desired.

Conflict between Locals and Foreigners

Live in Dormintory

African women have a poor living environment in Guangzhou. they tend to be very wary on street. The general lack of acceptance of their beauty due to local aesthetic prejudices also prevents them from feeling a sense of belonging and most of them choose to leave China after a while.

Based on the research questionnaire, areas of the site where Africans pass through or gather were identified. The fieldwork identified areas of the site that were poorly or inadequately urbanised and combined the two to find spaces that could be improved.

Latif discussed the project with me.

Latif shared his thoughts with me.

i met latif in a african restruant, he is very intrersted in my project. so we talked a lot about the problems africans need to face in china, and how to solve them. Language barrier is the biggest problem to problems in solve. There is no mutual understanding until different Life Scenes there is communication.

When the need arises, the ropes can be pulled down and people can play various sporting activities, such as football, table football, table tennis or even shuttlecock. People of different races get on well together while playing sports and afterwards there is more communication.

Hey! Where do you want to go after school?

How about KTV?

emm...... I prefer some African Restruant. I would like to go to a livehouse show.

Design a landscape along the street, reaches a height of three metres at its highest point. The landscape consists of a traffic lane that allows for quick passage and a number of platforms where people can stay and perform.

set up the columns

hang up the frames

place the pathways

use ropes to divide space

Determine where to place the columns based on structural load-bearing calculations.

Design the top of the pavilion using an isosceles right triangle as the basic unit.

Sliding rails are placed on the floor and fixed to the ground as the basis for enclosing the space.

Place fur glass at the top for rain and shade and attach it to the slide with a rope.

In front of a shopping mall, a African restruant is a good choice to make.I want to make sure that this restruant can be rotated to make sure more outdoor space can be freed up for use.

business life

In the corners of crowded residential building, i want to create a small Pavilion where the lighting can be changed according to the number of people using it.

ii.

Create public spaces to let volunteers introduce the city and chinese culture .

In this community, buildings form a triangular space between them that is difficult to use. So i use ropes to change the scale of spatial enclosure to accommodate the size of space required for different sports.

Variable space Diagram

Different sports require different scales of space, and when people want to change the type of sport, they can push and pull the ropes to change the size of the space enclosure.

As more people use the seats, gravity pulls down the bamboo tubes on the ceiling to create a different light environment as a way to attract people to sit together.

The choice of site and the form of each was confirmed according to the different functions and layouts of the African gathering points within the site.

I use thick 50 mm wooden sticks as the main supporting frame. Elastic cord with twine attached to the bamboo tube to give elasticity to the whole rope network so that it is easier to pull the bamboo tube into different positions.

Push Rod Spindle

rorate the space night-time plan Not nice or solid. To accommodate the different needs of people during the day and night, the dining room and dance studio can be rotated by pushing and pulling the handles singly, and the pattern of division of the outdoor space is changed by the rotation, releasing a larger outdoor space for street dancing in the evening and a dining area during the day. Therefore, lighter timbers were chosen for the load-bearing structure of the building and one of the internal columns was transformed into a pivot to rotate the room.

By drawing on traditional mortise and tenon joinery, a series of stick joints were designed without screws, and the best set was selected by combining aesthetics and practicality.
