For a safe summer, be sun smart Summer weather is here and with that many of us like to enjoy the outdoors. Summer time is a great time for New York City and surrounding areas. Whether you are planning on participating in free events (some event ideas below) or simply heading to the local parks, please be sun smart. Before you spend time outdoors, plan for the weather conditions of your outing. As the Cancer Council of Australia recommends, you should always remember to “Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide,” which means: • Slip on a shirt • Slop on sunscreen with broad spectrum (UVA and UVB) protection sun protective factor (SPF) of 15 or higher • Slap on a hat with a wide brim to your face, head, ears and neck • Seek shade, especially during midday hours • Slide on sunglasses to protect your eyes and skin around them Down: 1. Publisher’s Message We recently reached an important milestone, as June marked the first anniversary of the magazine and the nyforseniors .com website. We could not have succeeded without the support of AlphaCare, our major partner of the New York for Seniors initiative, as well as the support of Borough Presidents Eric L. Adams (Brooklyn) and Ruben Diaz, Jr. (Bronx). I am also happy to announce that last month we launched the Spanish version of the magazine, which increased the distribution to 17,000 copies. This expansion allows more seniors to have the opportunity to enjoy the resources and information found within the magazine. We have one more piece of good news. You can now view the entire magazine online, in the event your senior center runs out of the print version, or if you want to share the magazine with others. As always, I would like to thank you for your continued support of the New York for Seniors initiative. Have a great Summer!  Vernon K. Jones Publisher publisher@nyforseniors.com

JASA Celebrates Seniors At Their Annual Reception One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of the Honoree of the Year award to Hon. Richard Ravitch, former Lieutenant Governor of New York State. He was recognized for his lifetime achievements in working for residents of New York, including his commitment to diverse and affordable housing. Ravitch stated, “I am proud to be associated with this wonderful organization and to receive their generous award.”
by Simone LeConte-Parker JASA, a not-for-profit agency serving New York City’s senior population, recently hosted its annual fundraiser, Celebrating Seniors, at the American Jewish Historical Society (AJHS) in Manhattan. It was their most success fundraiser with the help of so many generous donors who helped them raise nearly $450,000 in support of JASA’s work to sustain and enrich the lives of older New Yorkers. The evening started with a cocktail reception where guests were able to enjoy food and drinks while they mingled. The special guest for the evening was Manhattan Borough President, Hon. Gale A. Brewer. Over 200 individuals, including activists, philanthropists, government leaders, nonprofit officials, and JASA Trustees, attended the event as well. We had the opportunity to speak with Trustee David Hildes, who shared his commitment to the organization. He stated that “there is such a great need among seniors and the elderly in New York City and JASA is there to support them in so many ways.”
During her remarks, JASA’s Chief Executive Officer, Kathryn Haslanger, declared “JASA is unique in the scope of our care and the strength of the safety net that we’ve crafted for older New Yorkers. An essential element of that safety net is having a place to call home.” Ms. Haslanger further stated, “JASA’s generous donors make our work possible, and we are very grateful.” The auction, led by Toby Usnik, Founder of Philanthropic Impact Partners, sold items, which will provide financial support for the gardening program, art program and other important services for seniors. The Celebrating Seniors fundraiser was a huge success in so many ways. It brought individuals together for a common good while raising awareness and funds for services for New York City’s seniors. Parents’ Day Event Celebrates The Chinese Community Photo by Martin Abrahams
by Angella Brown Manhattan’s Chinatown was the scene of an authentic program of Chinese culture and tradition, on May 19th. The venue was the spacious, air-conditioned, 300-seat auditorium of the Chinese Community Center at the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association (CCBA), an organization founded in 1883 to serve and protect the interests of Chinese people in the New York metropolitan area. The event was Parents’ Day: a combined springtime tribute to both mothers and fathers, celebrating the elders in the tight-knit community. After a check presentation by CCBA board members to benefit a local Chinese school and recognition of the participants, a full cultural program was the highlight of the afternoon’s events, and included a myriad of colorful performances by senior community center members. Variety-show style, each act took to the stage accompanied by live or recorded music, engaging the audience with traditional numbers that they all seemed to know, as they sang and clapped along!

Conceived and presented by AlphaCare, in partnership with Lin Sing Association, another one of the oldest Chinese American organizations in existence, the well-attended inaugural event also featured a Wellness and Resource Fair, targeted at the senior guests. Liz Ho, Community Outreach Manager for AlphaCare, was elated at the overwhelming interest and turnout for the day’s program. “It is an honor to link with an important community fixture like Lin Sing Association, especially for an occasion like Parents’ Day,” she said. “While paying respect to seniors and hardworking immigrant families, AlphaCare was also able to invite many of our hospital and home care agency partners that serve the Asian community. Together, we present a strong network of resources that support healthy living.” Over a dozen resource partners were in attendance, including Mannings Pharmacy, New York Presbyterian Hospital-Lower Manhattan, Xincon Home Health Care Services, NYC Commission on Human Rights, Fu Generation Foundation, Premier Home Health Care Services, and Asian Americans for Equality (AAE). Guests visited each table to speak to reps about available services, and collected information and free swag, like tote bags, key chains, and more. Advance Directives Did you know that if you are seriously ill and unable to make decisions for yourself during a medical emergency, you can designate someone to make those decisions on your behalf? These decisions protect your right to refuse medical treatment you do not want, or request the treatment that you do want, in the event you lose the ability to make medical decisions yourself. It’s called an Advance Directive or Living Will. An Advance Directive is a legal document that spells out your medical preferences to your family, friends and healthcare team, about healthcare decisions in the event that you are unable to make them such as during a surgical procedure or coma. There are different types of advance directives in New York State which include:
* Health Care Proxy which allows someone you choose as an agent to act on your behalf, if you can no longer speak for yourself. This health care proxy allows someone to speak for you, because you have made them aware of your choices for treatment in the event that you are unable to make them yourself.
* A Power of Attorney is a form of directive that gives someone that you choose, the power to act on your behalf for either medical care or finances. A “durable” power of attorney is someone you choose to make decisions being made on your behalf for both medical care and finances.
* A Living Will is a type of advance directive that allows you to determine your choices regarding your health care in the event you are incapacitated and cannot make medical decisions. In this case, your wishes will be known.

s ’ e r a C a h p l A s t s o H s n w o T d E n a m s s e Congr by Simone LeConte-Parker AlphaCare’s first Wellness and Resource Series event brought a lot of excitement to Restoration Plaza in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn. In partnreship with Brooklyn Borough President, Eric L. Adams, diabetes awareness was the theme for the event, with the ultimate goal helping NYC seniors stay healthy and active within their communities. The host for the event was Retired Congressman, Ed Towns. He provided lighthearted humor while emphasizing the importance of healthy living. Lively music and dancing also helped set the event’s positive tone. There were several community partners present as well, including New York for Seniors,

Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, Met Council, Interfaith Medical Center, NYC Department for the Aging, and Access-A-Ride. Brian Morgan, Vice President of Business Development at AlphaCare, stated, “today’s event is a way for seniors to learn about the different resources that are available to them that they might not have known about otherwise. By combining forces with community organizations, we are able to educate seniors and provide them with the tools they need to live their best life possible.”
A big hit attraction was AlphaCare’s new Wheel of Health game, which made learning about healthy living fun and exciting for those in attendance. Seniors lined up eagerly to spin the wheel and answer questions for a chance to win prizes.

Anne J. Phillips, a registered dietitian, performed the cooking demonstrations that included rice and beans with chicken, a mixed green salad, and an apple salad. Afterwards, seniors were able to savor her healthy creations. Congressman Towns commented that “these healthy recipes are so important, I think I am going to go home and try to cook a few of these.” Attendee, Lorna King, stated, “I really liked the cooking demonstrations and being able to enjoy the food afterwards. Bronx “Sip And Chat” Event Encourages Open Conversation About Elder Abuse Photo by Reggie Parker
by Simone LeConte-Parker In connection with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), the Office of Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., in collaboration with Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark, presented a “Sip and Chat” session on June 12th. Seniors listened intently as Bronx District Attorney Clark gave her remarks. She stated that “1 in 10 seniors have experienced some form of abuse and we are dedicated to preventing this.” She reminded us that “we must not only respect our elders but we must do all that we can to protect them.” Ellen Kolodney, Elder Abuse Coordinator, works closely with District Attorney Clark and is trained in comforting and reassuring elders. Organizer, Larcenia Walton, Director of Senior Services for the Office of Bronx Borough President displayed genuine concern for the seniors. What Larcenia loves most about older adults is “speaking with them, especially when their children are not in their life.” She wants seniors to know there is still hope. She describes Borough President Diaz as a caring individual who loves seniors as much as she does.

Later in the program, a short film by Neighborhood SHOPP entitled “When Help Was There” relayed stories on elder abuse. During the subsequent discussion led by Jesus Laguerra, he reminded us that “there is no excuse for elder abuse.” One senior, Marlene Sutherland, spoke about the concerns that many older adults face. She said “a lot of elders feel that we have to keep our family business within the family, so we suffer in silence. We don’t have to sit down and allow anyone to abuse us.” This session provided seniors with useful information to take home and with the reassurance that someone cares. Photo by Martin Abrahams

AlphaCare’s Wellness And Resource Initiative Aims To Keep Seniors Active by Dominique Carson

On June 22nd, AlphaCare continued their Wellness and Resource Series of events with a Diabetes Awareness Health Fair for seniors at the Brooklyn Sports Club in East New York. Joining forces with Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams, the purpose of the event was to bring various community resource partners onto one platform. Some of the community partners that AlphaCare collaborated with were AccessA-Ride, Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, Clear Caption, NYC Department for the Aging, SNAP-Met Council, NYPD Community Affairs, New York for Seniors, New York Life, EPIC, and many others. The seniors in attendance enjoyed healthy refreshments, cooking demonstrations, Zumba, prize giveaways, live entertainment by the Dancers of BRC, and had a chance to play AlphaCare’s new Wheel of Health game. Photo by Martin Abrahams
“We love arranging these events for seniors in all areas of Brooklyn because it’s important that they are well informed about the right resources. Not all seniors are digitally savvy, which is why we like to bring the resources directly to the community” said Cindy Lai, Senior Director of Communications and Marketing. “We are promoting a healthier lifestyle for seniors so they can live longer for their families while remaining active within their community.” “I really had a good time at the fair. It was fantastic”, said attendee Michele Brown. “I would like to call myself the dancing machine and the DJ was playing the jams. I had a good time for a great cause.” AlphaCare by Magellan Health

What you can do to prevent falls. Four things you can do: 1. Exercise to improve your balance and strength. Exercises that improve balance and make your legs stronger, lower your chances of falling. It also helps you feel better and more confident. An example of this kind of exercise is Tai Chi. Lack of exercise leads to weakness and increases your chances of falling. Ask your doctor or health care provider about the best type of exercise program for you. 2. Have your health care provider review your medicines. Have your doctor or pharmacist review all the medicines you take, even over-the-counter medicines. As you get older, the way medicines work in your body can change. Some medicines, or combinations of medicines, can make you sleepy or dizzy and can cause you to fall. 3. Make your home safer. About half of all falls happen at home. To make your home safer: * Remove things you can trip over (like papers, books, clothes, and shoes) from stairs and places where you walk. * Remove small throw rugs or use doublesided tape to keep the rugs from slipping. * Keep items you use often in cabinets you can reach easily without using a step stool. * Have grab bars put in next to and inside the tub and next to the toilet.
* Improve the lighting in your home. As you get older, you need brighter lights to see well. Hang light-weight curtains or shades to reduce glare. * Have handrails and lights installed on all staircases. * Wear shoes both inside and outside the house. Avoid going barefoot or wearing slippers.
* Use non-slip mats in the bathtub and on shower floors. 4. Have your vision checked Have your eyes checked by an eye doctor at least once a year and update your eyeglasses. You may be wearing the wrong glasses or have a condition like glaucoma or cataracts that limits your vision. Poor vision can increase your chances of falling.

Seniors Guide To Beginners’ Yoga by Nikkia Rivera Yoga originated in India around the fifth century BCE and primarily focuses on flexibility and strength, working the entire body while having a low impact on joints. Yoga has many different styles, varying from simple, slower movements to faster, more complex routines. Finding the right type of yoga all depends on your personal needs. Some good types of yoga to start with are: Hatha focuses on simple and slower movements. This type is perfect for beginners and those who are looking for a calmer workout with meditative practices. Vinyasa has a faster pace with frequent changes in poses. Vinyasa is better for those with more flexibility and need for cardio.
Iyengar uses props like blocks, blankets and straps to help align the body into poses. The poses are held for longer periods of time, and is especially great for those recovering from injuries. Yin Yoga is focused on slower movements that help restore elasticity in the body. It’s great for those who want to relax both their minds and bodies. Avoid this type of yoga if you suffer from any connective tissue disorders. Yoga can be altered for different needs and health conditions. It can be done at home or in a class. While both have their benefits, doing yoga under the supervision of a trained professional is safer, especially with more complex yoga poses, since yoga instructors can correct any imperfections in the poses. When doing yoga, the most important thing is to be safe. You should never feel any pain while in a position. If you do, release the position slowly to avoid hurting yourself more.
