FROM THE PRINCIPAL
BOB ROWE
The 2018-19 school year is the 94th for Covington Catholic High School, but marks just the beginning for major new elements. Tangibly, the dust is beginning to settle as we anticipate the completion of the Anthony R. Zembrodt STEM and Fine Arts Center (which includes STEM facilities, and a 200-person auditorium) as well as the Drees Student and Alumni Center. These buildings complete the $9 Million in additions and renovations scope enabled by the Bright Minds, Bright Future capital campaign. We look forward to celebrating the dedication of these two buildings with you in the spring. Inside, the new House System has taken hold, with six “Columns” providing structure to the cultural traditions and brotherhood that have been built over decades. We are off to a quick start, with the House System contributing to camaraderie, a sense of community, and leadership development. Even with these changes, as always, our steadfast focus is on the Mission to “embrace the Gospel message of Jesus Christ in order to educate young men spiritually, academically, physically and socially.” We celebrate the ways that we advance this goal, including the success of the fall athletic programs. Congratulations to the Colonel Football team and Coach Eddie Eviston for another spectacular season. Please enjoy this issue as we share great news from the 2018-19 fall semester. As always thank you for your support and encouragement. I wish you and the entire Covington Catholic High School family a truly blessed Christmas season. Please be assured of my prayers. God’s blessings, Bob Rowe

THE HOUSE SYSTEM AT COVCATH: E
Introducing the House System at Covington Catholic High School. Our school has been around a long time – since 1925 – and has many strong legacies and traditions. But sometimes, changes are good, too. One of the newest changes is our House System, established in 2018. While it’s technically “new,” it simply provides a structure to reinforce the good about CovCath, and make the Colonel Brotherhood even stronger. House Systems originated in England, and have been in use at some American colleges and universities for some time. Some high schools, like Moeller in Cincinnati and Trinity in Louisville,

have had House Systems for a long time. These schools helped CovCath prepare our House System, as one of the first in northern Kentucky. So, why have a House System? The formal answer is…”House Systems exist to divide a school into small, permanent, faculty- and studentled, cross sectional, human friendly components that promote learning and social development.” But basically, it’s to help every student to truly be a part of the Colonel family. With CovCath students now coming from almost 50 different grade schools, this helps everyone find his place right away, no matter his interests!
How does it work? Every student (and staff member) is a member of a Column, a unit of approximately 100 students across all four grades, as the central structure of his four-year school experience. The six columns, with unique symbols and color schemes, are named for these patron saints: Aquinas, Augustine, Benedict, Bosco, Chaminade and Kolbe. All members contribute to points a Column earns toward the coveted “Colonel Cup” through scholarship, service, school spirit, and just plain fun. Each Column is divided into five Mentor Groups, led by a faculty

These small groups meet twice per week and remain together for four years, building community and fostering brotherhood. The group members get to know each other (and the Mentor Teacher) really well – across grades, across clubs and teams, across everything. For example, a mentor group may make breakfast some mornings, play games and have competitions! The main goals are interaction, camaraderie and support. The Mentor Groups really are the heart of the house system. They become the central point for these type of opportunities: • Leadership – to help plan and run activities of the Mentor Group, Column and House System

By the Numbers We’re proud that CovCath is once again a leader in establishing new ways to support our students as they develop spiritually, academically, physically and socially. Here are the key numbers you should know: • 94 years of tradition • Over 8,500 alumni
•A cademic Support – to provide tutors or just general advice
• 30 Mentor Groups
• Teamwork – because every good Colonel likes a friendly competition!

A Campus Ministry Team was recently established to assist students and faculty incorporate higher levels of spirituality in their daily lives, specifically within their respective House System “Columns”. The team is led by Father Michael Hennigen, Father Matthew Summe, and Mr. Jim Fortner, with nine teachers. The team has implemented monthly adoration to be held the first Friday of every month during the school day, and also established an Ephraim Team which consists of selected juniors and seniors to help in the spiritual formation of their Columns. The Team is currently working on additional near- and longterm ideas to advance spiritual leadership among the students of Covington Catholic.
“As a former out of district student, I think the House System makes it easier for me to walk around the halls and know guys from every grade level. With the House System, we have a say in the activities and events that we participate in and as a senior, I think the leadership opportunities are awesome.” – Jackson Blank, Class of 2019 COVINGTON CATHOLIC JOURNAL

The Anthony R. Zembrodt STEM and Fine Arts Center will welcome students for daily use beginning in January. The new, $3.5 Million academic wing will house the CCH STEM program. State-of-the-art features include: 3-D printers, a laser cutter, saws, drills, a 3-D scanner to build engineering prototypes and art or science projects, a welding room and paint room, and a robotics ring. The building also includes an impressive 200-person auditorium for performances, lectures, student presentations, and other large meetings.

On the opposite side of the school, the Drees Student and Alumni Center is taking shape for completion by spring. Its signature feature is an open, central chamber that will have important function for both students and alumni. Besides expanding the cafeteria capacity, it gives students a space (with high-top workstation tables) for gathering before and after school. That same area can welcome large capacity gatherings of alumni for pre- and post-game events, with easy access to the stadium or gym, as well as the new CCH Spirt Shop. The balance of the new addition will provide needed new office space for administration and faculty. Very importantly, the chapel tower was enhanced with new stained glass to ensure that it remains the central
focal point and guidepost of the new campus. It and the striking look to the entire campus façade are definitely catching the attention of all who pass by our House of Blue.
Save the Date! Save the date for the dedication of these beautiful new facilities on Sunday, May 5th at 2:00 pm.

For most AP students at CovCath, those scores translated directly into college credit and/or placement into higher level courses in the respective subject. Anthony Zechella, Assistant Principal, Dean of Academics, noted, “The AP Scholar designation is a tremendous honor for the recipients, their families, and their teachers. Our AP program is very rigorous. Success in any of these subjects requires a great deal of dedication and diligence by all members of our learning community. The success of our students in the AP program is further evidence of Covington Catholic’s commitment to educational excellence.”

NATIONAL MERIT RESULTS
Covington Catholic proudly announced that two seniors were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation as Semi Finalists in the 64th annual National MeritÂŽ Scholarship Program: Harrison Farrar and Nathan Guenther.
Additionally, three students were named Commended Scholars: Connor Furnish, Johnathan Graf, and Nathan Romes. Last fall, roughly 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools across the country entered the
2019 program by taking the PSAT/ NMSQT Qualifying Test. Of those juniors, only 16,000, less than 1%, are named National Merit Semifinalists, based on their scores on this exam. These academically talented students are now eligible to seek Finalist standing, moving one step further in the competition for some 7,500 scholarships worth about $32 million that will be offered in the Spring of 2019. Nationwide, about half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit ScholarÂŽ title.

ANNUAL COVCATH COLONEL CLASSIC VEX ROBOTICS TOURNAMENT – JANUARY 5TH For the third year in a row, CovCath will be hosting a VEX Robotics Tournament at CovCath on Saturday, January 5th, 2019. Up to 60 middle and high school teams from across the state (and possibly beyond) will be competing in this KY VEX State Qualifier. The event is free and open to the public. If you haven’t seen a robotics tournament, you’re missing an experience! The VEX Robotics platform is aligned with the PLTW (Project Lead The Way) program (the CCH STEM curriculum source) and is the largest and fasting growing high school robotics competition in the world. Competitions are a
great opportunity for students to develop skills in teamwork, leadership, and project management. Teams of students design, build, and code robots each year to play a brand-new game. Thousands of competition events are held annually in all 50 US states and over 40 countries. Given strong and growing participation in the CCH Robotics program, Robotics I and Robotics II were added as general electives at CCH in 2018-19. Applying basic STEM concepts to a competitive atmosphere increases student engagement and makes lessons feel more “real”.
CCH STEM AND GLOBAL BUSINESS SOLUTIONS LEAD Cincinnati Magazine featured Global Business Solutions and the support it has provided to the Covington Catholic High School STEM program. Gaby Batshoun, GBS President/Founder and father of Matthew (CCH 2018), has been a key leader and partner with Principal Rowe and CCH STEM Director Bob Lind in defining and pursuing the STEM program vision. Mr. Batshoun also coaches the Vex Robotics Team and sits on the school’s Advisory Board and Board of Directors. Additionally, GBS provides technology services for the school campus with an IT engineer embedded within the CCH IT Department. The article concludes as follows: “The partnership between GBS and Covington Catholic High School is a stellar example of how one Northern Kentucky business has integrated itself into the community to the mutual benefit of both. “I could not have done anything to the level that we have done without Global Business Solutions and especially without Gaby Batshoun. He has been a tremendous blessing to us,” proclaimed Bob Lind. The partnership is one of the reasons GBS was selected as a finalist by the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce for its Business IMPACT Awards. These awards recognize businesses impacting the community through innovation, creativity, strong business practices and leadership.”

FALL SPORTS RECAPS CROSS COUNTRY
The CCH cross-country team had a fantastic season, winning numerous meets including the Grant County Invitational, the Mason County Invitational, and the Diocese of Covington Championship. The team was Conference Runner-Up, Regional Runner-Up, and 7th place at the State Championship meet. This marks three straight top 10 finishes at the AAA State meet. The only other schools to finish in the top 10 in each of the past three seasons are St. X, Trinity, and Oldham County. Area coaches named senior Will Tate to 1st Team All-Region; seniors Ben Hail and Casey Wolnitzek, plus sophomore Dominic Taylor to 2nd Team All-Region; and seniors Michael Kessans and Aiden Smith, plus junior Brooks Boschert and sophomore Ethan Wever to All-Region Honorable Mention. Congratulations to the Colonel runners on a great season!
SOCCER
The soccer team once again faced a brutal schedule in preparation for post-season play. The first half of the season, the Colonels finished with a record of 4-7-2 while facing some of the strongest competition from both Kentucky and Ohio. The Colonels gained momentum in the second half of the season to win eight out of their last nine games. Unfortunately, the Colonels fell to Highlands in ninth region finals by a score of 2-1. Team captains were seniors Reese Foster, Nathan Deimling, and Ben Wessels, plus juniors Jack Stava and Nate Darpel. The team will graduate fourteen seniors, but will bring back another large group next season. Both the junior varsity and freshman teams lost in their regional tournaments. However, the young talent is strong as the team looks for success next season. Lastly, special congratulations to Head Coach Jeremy Robertson for recording his 100th career win during the first game of the season vs. St. Henry. His current record through seven seasons is 111-43-16.
GOLF The 2018 CCH Golf Team continued the storied tradition of the program as the Colonel Golfers won the 38th Regional Title in school history. The first half of the season had its difficulties as the team had strong rounds by individuals but only a few great days as an entire team. Senior Patrick Kennedy and junior Ben Sweeten led the way throughout most of the season with seniors Cameron Martin and Lincoln Hammon and junior Christopher Fitz rounding out the top five. Patrick placed in the top five overall in multiple tournaments across the state and won the Madison Central Invitational as an individual. The team shot 306 in both the NKAC tournament, and the 7th Regional Tournament to win both events and continued the streak of qualifying for the KHSAA State Tournament for the 65th consecutive season. Patrick Kennedy also won the 7th Region as an individual with a score of 67, five under par. The Colonel golfers played some of their best golf of the season at the State Tournament by shooting a 307 to end the first day in 6th place and qualify for the second day. The team finished in 7th overall, which made the Colonels one of only three schools in the entire state to place in the top seven in the state for three consecutive seasons. The team graduates six great seniors, but is looking to continue their success with a young team next season.

A PROUD FIGHT! The CovCath Colonels fought the good fight, finishing another stellar season in the 2018 KHSAA Class 5A Championship game on Sunday, December 2nd, at the University of Kentucky’s Kroger Field. The 2018 team finished 14-1 as the state runner-up, falling 20-16 to an undefeated South Warren team. In the 52nd season of Colonel Football, the 2018 Colonel Football Team made new history for this storied program. Once again, you made us proud, Colonels! • The Colonels claimed a pre-season #9 national ranking in the National Athletic Association of Private Schools and spent the season with a #1 ranking in the state. • The 14-1 record this year reflected 29 consecutive wins since the 2017 state champion campaign. The Colonels dominated throughout the season, with competition from three states. Going into the final game, the Colonels averaged 41.1 points per game while allowing only 9.9. • This was the third time CovCath has played in back-to-back finals and its first time doing so since 1993-1994. • Senior Casey McGinniss, Class 5A Player of the Year, broke multiple season and career records (going into the title game), including Most Touchdowns (Season = 35; Career = 82) and Most Yards Rushing (Season = 2140; Career = 5,121). ATHLETICS COACH EVISTON AWARDED Colonel Football Head Coach Eddie Eviston was awarded the Paul Brown Excellence in Coaching and Leadership Award. From an article by Terry Boehmker in the NKY Tribune (July 24, 2018): The annual award recognizes an outstanding high school football coach in the region. In 2017, Eviston guided CovCath to the first undefeated season in team history and the Kentucky Class 5A state championship. The Bengals also donated $5,000 to the CovCath athletic department in conjunction with the award during a ceremony that took place at the team’s annual pre-training camp media luncheon. “Eddie Eviston has been a presence in the local football world for most of his life,”Bengals president Mike Brown said during the award presentation. “His coaching record is extraordinarily successful, and there’s going to be a lot more to come. He is certainly worthy of receiving the Paul Brown Excellence in Coaching Award.”
STATE CHAMPIONS RECOGNIZED AT GABP Both the football and basketball state championship teams were recognized at Great American Ballpark.
GOLF Covington Catholic senior golfer Cameron Martin, a member of The First Tee of Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky chapter, was selected to participate in the 2018 PURE Insurance Championship Impacting the First Tee. It’s a PGA Champions event at Pebble Beach Golf Links and Poppy Hills Golf Course which pairs 81 junior golfers from First tee with 81 PGA Tour Champions and 162 amateurs to compete for the pro-junior title. He was paired with Kentucky native and former PGA Tour winner, Russ Cochran, for the event. Cameron sunk a 30-foot putt that made the broadcast on The Golf Channel.
FUNDRAISING FOR ALS The CovCath and Newport Central Catholic school communities collaborated with a “Catholics vs ALS” fundraising football scrimmage to support Team “B”elieve for families battling ALS. Coach Eviston’s brother Brian is battling the disease. Both Eddie and Brian played football at Newport Catholic. See “TeamBelieve17” on Facebook for more info.

ADVANCEMENT
FROM THE DIRECTOR OF ADVANCEMENT
TARA LEEN Dear Colonel Community,
In our recent mailings of the House of Blue book and the Annual Appeal, you have noticed our central theme of “house”. Just as every house needs a solid foundation to endure many years, as the new Advancement Director, it did not take long to appreciate the solid foundation that exists at CCH. I am truly amazed by the spirit and generosity of the Colonel community such as: • The $9 million raised to complete the new campus improvements. • Over $300,000 raised annually by more than 1,000 donors, supporting the school’s tuition assistance program. • The establishment of over 60 scholarships to help students from all walks of life receive a CovCath education. • Generous sponsorship dollars from the corporate community, supporting our events and overall needs of the students and teachers. • Gifts made in memory of loved ones who have passed away but continue to have a “spirit that will not die”! This is just a snapshot of what you are doing to bless young men with a notable education and brotherhood they will have for the rest of their lives! At the recent open house, I met many families from the Tri-State whose sons are considering attending Covington Catholic. Your support of the Annual Appeal is allowing young men from various backgrounds to experience first-hand what it means to be a Colonel and be part of a foundation that will continue to build the “House of Blue”. In my short time at CCH the staff, students, parents, alumni, volunteers and donors have welcomed me and my family into the House of Blue as part of the Colonel family with open arms and for that I am Blessed. On behalf of the Advancement Department (Kim, Christa, Alex, and me), thank you for helping us to advance the mission of Covington Catholic through your unwavering support. We wish all of you and your loved ones a very Merry Christmas and healthy New Year! With Gratitude,
Tara Leen Director of Advancement

ADVANCEMENT CONSECUTIVE GIVING MASS The Annual Appeal helps all students receive a quality education at Covington Catholic. Tuition and fees cover 85% of the cost to educate each student. The Annual Appeal helps cover the remaining 15%, supports those students who qualify for tuition assistance, and funds our Work Study Program. We thank those who have given to support these students and the school with their generous donations. You can still give to the Annual Appeal and help CCH meet our goal with the enclosed envelope. In the season of thanksgiving, Covington Catholic holds an all-school mass, inviting donors who have given consecutively to the Annual Appeal for five or more years to attend. This year, more than 60 donors attended. Following mass and lunch in the cafeteria, they were given a tour of the new STEM and Fine Arts Center. Thank you to these loyal donors who support our steadfast HOUSE OF mission to educate young men spiritually, academically, physically and socially.

VOORHEES FAMILY HONORS ART SCHOLARSHIP In November of 2018, Laura and John Voorhees and their son, CJ, set up an endowed merit-based, art scholarship fund. Wishing to pay it forward, CJ promoted the idea with his parents. CJ spent four years in the art program at CCH from 2011-2015. He always felt it was the greatest experience of his high school career. He found the program provided him with a sense of belonging and an opportunity to develop his creative skills as an artist, something he truly enjoyed. CJ felt very blessed to have Mr. Haders as his teacher. In addition to being an excellent teacher, Mr. Haders taught him the value of having a good moral character and being dedicated to his goals. While in the art program, CJ was honored to be a recipient of the Gallenstein Award. He attended the Governor’s School for the Arts, and at graduation, he received the Best Artist and Best Graphic Artist Award. CJ is now a senior at the University of Kentucky and majoring in Finance and Accounting. According to his parents, although CJ does not

intend to pursue a career as an artist at this time, all of his experiences in the art program guided his development into becoming a well-rounded, up-standing young man. CJ, and his mom and dad, hope this scholarship will help provide an opportunity to other art students to have the same wonderful experience.

FROM THE ALUMNI DIRECTOR
ALEX AMMERMAN ’10 Alumni, Parents, and Friends, This school year has been an extremely exciting time to be around Covington Catholic High School. As the Alumni Relations Director, when I engage with the alumni, I get to see firsthand how the current state of the school makes us all proud to be Colonels. We welcomed back nine different reunion classes to campus this year. While giving tours of the school, I constantly heard the words “this is different from when I went to CCH”. There are obvious changes as soon you turn into the parking lot with the ongoing construction projects which further establish and enhance the identity of Covington Catholic. CovCath remains a place where overall success is woven into the fabric of our brotherhood. We continue to make our mark in the community through spiritual, academic, physical and social successes. Just this past school year we celebrated record-breaking community service numbers, higher median ACT scores, increased annual appeal donations, multiple state championships and continuously growing alumni support. I urge all of our students and alumni to continue to find ways to make a difference in our community and beyond. As the construction continues to change the aesthetics of the school, there are pieces of our history that remain the same. We remember our past as we push towards the future. We remember all of the alumni who have gone before us at the Annual Memorial Mass, recognize our reunion groups every fall, and reminisce about the great times that we had in the halls of Covington Catholic High School. I wish all of our alumni a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and hope that I see you soon in Park Hills. With A Spirit That Will Not Die!

MASS OF THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED On Tuesday, October 30, Covington Catholic held its annual Mass of the Faithful Departed in memory of deceased alumni. Each year, since 1990, we have come together for this all-school mass to celebrate the lives of fallen Colonels and remember those who came before us. Nearly 100 alumni were represented at mass with a rose, carried by a family member and placed at the altar. Afterwards, the families and friends of the deceased gathered for breakfast in the school cafeteria where they shared many memories about the lives of their loved ones, including their time at CovCath. This special event held each year around the time of All Souls day is a tradition that is very special to all of us at CCH. If you know of a deceased alumnus who was missed or wish to be invited to this mass, please contact the Advancement Department.
The following donations were made in loving memory of deceased alumni. These donations will go toward the funding of the Covington Catholic High School Alumni Scholarship Fund. Once the fund reaches $10,000.00 a scholarship will be awarded to a student on an annual basis for tuition assistance. REUNION NEWS CLASS OF 1958 – The Class of 1958 came back to Park Hills on September 14 to enjoy a tour of the school building, a CCH football game, and a postgame reception in the gym. Thanks to all those who came out to celebrate the 60 Year Reunion of the 1958 Colonels!
CLASS OF 1973 –The Class of 1973 Reunion/Oktoberfest was attended by hundreds!! About 40 of which were actually there for the Reunion. As you might expect, the evening was full of laughs, unfounded rumors, bold faced lies, false accusations and alternative facts. Our entertainment plans fizzled when it was discovered that the available electrical system was unable to support the demands of Bob Brandner’s “RiverDance, The Director’s Cut” planned solo performance. We shared some memories, ate tater tots (eight per serving), caught up with whatever news we could share and lifted a glass to the memory of those unable to attend. After all, in the end we are all Colonels!!!
CLASS OF 1963 – Colonels from the Class of 1963 enjoyed watching the CCH Football team beat the Beechwood Tigers at CCH on September 14 for their 55 Year Reunion. The Class also enjoyed a Saturday night dinner in the cafeteria. Special thanks to Ken Williams for helping put together a great weekend!
CLASS OF 1978 – The CCH Class of 1978 celebrated their 40 Year Reunion on October 12 and 13. They started the weekend activities off with a small hearty group of 28 golfers at Devou Golf and Event Center. Lies were told, fun was made, great shots were had and plenty of laughs were shared by all who attended. After golf, the Class of 1978 hung around the outdoor patio and indoor bar, where Mr. Bill Lejeune made his annual appearance at some of the more recent reunions. On Saturday, they had a Reunion Memorial Mass for the fallen brothers of ‘78 at the school chapel. They then loaded onto a bus at 10 am and went to Keeneland for the day. Forty-Four classmates and wives joined in for a day with the ponies and more fun. Finally, at around 9 pm they pulled back into the school parking lot and went their separate ways. All members are planning to do it all again next year, but they all know it will probably take five more years to pull it off. Special thanks to Mr. Joe Fischer for helping put together the weekend.
CLASS OF 1968 – The Class of 1968 at Covington Catholic High School held its 50-Year Reunion on Sept. 14-16, 2018. It was three days of fun, friendship, football and ever-expanding foreheads, and the camaraderie in the event surely reflected the school motto emblazoned on the exterior of Griffin Stadium … “With a Spirit That Will Not Die!” There were 62 class members who took part in at least one of the three days of festivities, and 32 of those attended all three days of major events. The Reunion drew classmates from California, Florida, Tennessee and Illinois, as well as Ohio and Kentucky. Special thanks to Frank Henn, Mark Gehring, Jack Bogaczyk and Charlie “Kip” Stander for helping put together this amazing weekend!
