Kids on Food
-Kids love the topic of food, but when it comes to where food is from, they have no idea -Kids love to get their hands dirty, but rarely participate in the process of growing or making food -Most kids have trouble defining what a fresh food is

What is your relationship with food? Interactive interviews at Bilquist Elementary school asked children to evaluate their relationship with food.
jillian.wells
Children marked how many times a day they ate, and what they ate throughout the day.
In each quadrant, kids drew their 3 favorite foods, fruits, and veggies, and where food comes from.
Children colored in their 3 favorite shapes how they’d like them to be seen.
Children 6-8 years old eat food 3-6 times a day and are presented with the opportunity to eat fresh food 0-3 times a day.
Most children are unaware where their food comes from, and drew pictures ranging from the lunch lady to grocery stores to cows outside.
Children were attracted to inviting, friendly, familiar shapes, and want the outside of whatever they’re using to look like what they’d be eating.
Meet Sarai
A curious, energetic six year old from Germany who currently lives in Portland with her family. Since moving to Portland, Sarai has been begging her parents to recreate the garden they had in Germany. Due to frequent moves, however, they have not been able to do so.
Where does food fit in? -Sarai eats at four main points throughout the day -Two-three of those points occur at home -Strawberries, snap peas, and tomatoes are some of her favorite fresh foods

Bringing Insights Together
jillian.wells
Communal
Individual
Concept ideation centered around simple and easy ways that children can successfully grow their own food. Concepts spanned from individual to communal, however, they leaned heavily towards individual systems that would encourage and inspire kids to learn about and participate in growing, independently from others.
Refining Concepts Quick sketch models were taken to users to help determine size, form, and proportions for the final concept.
jillian.wells
Home Grown
An indoor planter that encourages youth to participate in daily hands on rituals that help them to lead self-sustaining lifestyles.
jillian.wells
At Home
-Home Grown looks great in adult homes, yet maintains a friendly aesthetic that is fun and inviting to kids -Home Grown has integrated learning tools in it that make growing food fun and easy for children -Home Grown’s angled form creates a personal space for children to play in independently from adults
jillian.wells
How it works
Storage in the center compartment of home grown houses paper pulp seeds in the shape of the plant it grows, plus a water dropper used to help sprout the seeds.
To sprout paper pulp seeds, place them on the acrylic dishes and water twice a day with the water dropper until the seed sprouts. jillian.wells
Dig and Water
Once the seed sprouts, use the perfect size shovel to dig a hole for the sprout in either the fruit and veggie section, or the herb gardens on either side of the planter.
Once planted, use the perfect dose watering can to water your new plants twice a day. jillian.wells
Where to Plant What Main growing area
Herb gardens Paper pulp home Paper Pulp comes in a variety of fruit, vegetable, and herb shapes, all of which grow the shape they represent. Paper pulp can be bought in packs individually, or in regional packs, providing the child with 5 varieties of paper pulp seeds, all of which grow easily in their region.

1
1 As a disorganized teen Molly is constantly riding her bike or taking public transit to get around. In doing so, she’s constantly juggling several devices.
2
2 Whether in Seattle or in New York Molly goes out exploring with her camera, and needs multiple bags for her various outings.
3
3 As a member of Gen-Y Molly is a tech-savy social butterfly that is constantly looking for new ways to share her photos with her friends.

Ideations explored different forms, different ways for humans to generate energy, and different ecological material choices. Ultimately Dooster aims to be a learning toy for children that children enjoy enough to play with alone, but also entertains parents enough to keep them interested in play time. jillian.wells
Finding the Form
Sketch models focused around finding the perfect size, form, and movement for Dooster.
jillian.wells
Dooster
A children’s toy that both promotes parent-child interaction, and also harvests and conserves energy simply by being used.
jillian.wells
Making Energy with Dooster A Pushing each individual cylinder creates the energy to power the toy. When the cylinders are pushed the child can line each animal up to make a traditional animal or a cross between two different animals. When the animals are lined up, they make an appropriate noise. For instance, a duck and a rooster, would make a Dooster, “COCK-A-QUACK!!”
B Left over energy is conserved to power three LED light bulbs in Dooster’s acrylic base, transforming the toy into a child’s night light. Just push down on the top, and the child is provided with protective light most of the night!

jillian.wells
The Life of a Scribe
-Medical students are already in over their heads, when they try to take on extra jobs, like being a scribe, they often have trouble operating the current equipment -Most existing medical tools fail to bridge the gap between students and professionals and/or fail to double as learning tools for students
“Bringing students and professionals together is of the utmost importance. jillian.wells

How can you make kitchen tools that are easy for all users to operate?
jillian.wells
jillian.wells
Key Insights to Baking 1) Kitchen tools are not ergonomically made for children and grandparents 2) Most desirable kitchen tools are out of the price range of many users 3) No matter what you bake with, it always leaves a mess
jillian.wells
What’s Not Working Baking is a time-honored tradition in the household, meaning that the baking process is part of almost every persons lives, no matter their age. Current users mix with a range of utensils including stand mixers, electrical mixers, and hand powered mixers such as whisks.
John, 4 years old
Kristin, 27 years old
Mimi, 79 years old
-Has trouble using kitchen utensils -Cannot operate hand-held mixers by himself -Hates cleaning after he bakes
-Bakes 3-4 times a week -Hand-held electric mixers leaves a mess on her and her kitchen -Cannot afford anything nicer
-Whisk and bowl saves space in her home -Whisk and bowl are light and are easier for her to use than electric mixers?

Threaded Mixer + Salad Spinner
Ideations centered around alternate ways in which baked goods could be mixed in, as well as what form that might encompass. jillian.wells
Simply Mixt An affordable, energy efficient mixing system designed to be easy to operate for users of all ages.
jillian.wells
In Your Kitchen -Small, affordable and fits great in any kitchen -Spring-loaded gear system and simple ergonomics make it easy for anyone to use -Mixing system with lid helps keep your kitchen clean while baking
jillian.wells
Add Ingredients
To open the mixer simply twist the top and take it off. When you’re ready to mix, twist the cap back on and it will lock into place using the bayonet lock.
jillian.wells
The Perfect Mix
Pushing a lock in holds the spring-loaded handle down when the Simply Mixt is not in use. Slide it back out to move the handle.
When the user pushes the handle down, the threaded attachment spins as it follows its path. As the thread moves, it initiates the movement of the planetary gears inside the mixer. This action causes the bowl to spin.
