JILLIAN RIO architectural design portflolio15
I had the pleasure of being apart of this fantastic team and my first architecture family, Mateu Architecture, for two short years. In this time, I met some of the most passionate architects and designers who found passing on their design knowledge as important as their own design work.
MATEU ARCHITECTURE For Ramon Arbesu, a man who gave as much care and attention to his work as he did to any person in his presence. I am forever grateful to have known you.

This family winter home is designed to maximize the use of the wayfront property, locating most program spaces to take advantage of the magnificent views of the unique downtown Miami skyline and the visual experience of South Florida waterfront living. The site geometry informed a design that allows a “saw tooth” solution, permitting guests to experience a series of spaces that grow larger into the property and closer

to the bay one gets, culminating in the “great room”, the largest of the public spaces, with an incredible panoramic vista of the Miami skyline. The “saw tooth” as a design tool, allows the organization of the program to take place as intended and to occur in a correct order and location relative to the site, orientation and function.

N The design for this sea faring couple responds contextually to the site by opening up most rooms of the program to the view of the catamaran and the bay, while providing proper privacy from adjacent neighbors in an already developed community. Entering the house on the ground floor, spaces are prioritized in order of importance, with the most important and public spaces toward the rear of the house, all blurring the edges between inside and outside, a privelage of living in South Florida. The upper level consists of the more private spaces with the master bedroom suite reserved for the rear of the house, enjoying the prime views to the south, east and bay.
CASA ARNAU
The roof is also accessible by stairs and an elevator for rooftop parties with a stunning 360 degree view, including a bocce court and bar. Casa Arnau meets its program requirements in a very simple, functional, yet detailed imodernist way.

N The site, located in Pinecrest, Florida is situated in a single-family residential neighborhood. The plot of land, being rather large than what the firm normally works with felt limitless. The land was covered in oaks, ficuses, and shrubs. There was one oak in particular, “el roble” (the oak), that encompassed a vast portion of the site. The project was then commited to encompass “el roble” as well. The tree, in combination with continuous groundcover, soften the appearance of the two story home to the street. Paired with sunshading devices, the western sun is no match for this family. The home is divided into two wings, the main living area running north
CASA DE EL ROBLE to south, and the guest bedrooms east to west. The living area is a double-height space that can be seen through any opening in the home providing an open, refreshing feeling. This feeling can be maximized by opening the glass doors on each side of the living area. It is contained only by glass and with the sun just right, or all six sets of doors open, uncontained.

THE FIVE HOUSES
Long known to work with the majestic backdrop that nature provides, the design team at Mateu Architecture envisioned and delivered homes that are unique both individually and collectively in their shared lush surroundings. The dwellings become part of the natural backdrop. Each house is built as a canvas for a family to paint its story.
Casa Vista is a quaint, mountain top vacation house with stunning views west and southwest, with the capacity of enjoying beautiful sunset filled afternoons in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia. The design concept is on that uses the house as a “wall” from the street. Only after entering the premises, are you actually exposed to the breathtaking views for miles

beyond. Organizationally, an open courtyard with a cantilevered spa acts as a an intermittent space, separating public and private spaces. Each of the three identical bedroom spaces include fireplaces, a “bunk-bed” alcove for extended family group visitors and private decks.

The opportunity for five new town homes in Coral Gables, Florida is rare in such a highly developed area. It was very important for these townhomes to speak to its immediate surroundings of single-family homes. The concept was to give solidarity to each unit with the goal of having these townhomes contain the positive qualities of single a family. First, the “Segovianas meet the main street with a pedestrian scaled wall and garden. People living, working, and walking through this city can appreciate the scaled treatments of this building that disguises itself as five, more accessible buildings. Next, the townhomes have privacy. Privacy from the street and each other while maximizing light for each space in the home with an open courtyard that is private to a single unit. While these

are three story town homes, most activity happens on the ground level in a double height living area which is off of the kitchen and the private open courtyard that becomes integrated into the living spaces through glass doors. The roof level provides an alternate living space as welll.
