The Local Kaleidoscope:

September Kleidocsope:

A Message from the President and Executive Director This is not the first time that a Biotti and a Sellers have found themselves at the helm of The John M. Barry Boys & Girls Club of Newton. In the early 1990’s Joseph E. Biotti, Jr. and Dave Sellers, Sr. made an outstanding pair. Their efforts together laid the groundwork that eventually resulted in the purchase and build-out of our Watertown Street facility. Almost two decades later, we find ourselves in the fortunate position to be able to continue the work that was so important to our fathers: serving the young people of Newton. For the past three years no one has worked harder for those children than outgoing President Victor Colantonio. Under his leadership we improved our financial reporting and planning procedures, revamped our development office, redesigned our website, added three new signature fundraising events, diversified the skill-set of our Board of Directors, and attracted many new supporters. He also became the first individual donor in our organization’s history to join the prestigious Jeremiah Milbank Society. As for the new Sellers/Biotti duo, we continue to concentrate our efforts on building the Club’s infrastructure. Our improved development strategies are beginning to show success. For the first time since the Building for Kids Capital Campaign, we have raised more than $107,000 in cash donations in a single year. The “Live Local. Give Local.“ awareness campaign and our new Shop Local corporate giving program enjoyed strong support and increased our donor base. We have done much to improve our online presence and under the direction of our marketing partner, causemedia inc., the Club’s printed and electronic materials have never been more eye-catching. When Honda Village challenged us to get 1,000 people to like them on Facebook, we did not disappoint. Not only did we earn $5,000, we finished a day early and delivered 200 extra supporters! Familiar friends like The Village Bank, Highland Street Foundation, The Perpetual Benevolent Fund, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern New England, and Whole Foods Market–Newtonville made grants that really impacted our bottom line. The Newton Kiwanis Club also came up big, issuing a $9,000 challenge grant and doubling their gift when the goal was met. Other supporters who gave more than ever before include: Cabot’s Ice Cream Inc. / Joseph and Carol Prestejohn, Cambridge Savings Bank, Francis and Cindy Crocetti, and Martin and Mary Sher. Our fundraising events raised more than $250,000 this year! Large-scale updates were made to the Fashion Show and Comedy Night and big changes are planned for this year’s Auction. We have begun to study how to make our facility more environmentally friendly. In September we will introduce new membership software that will improve our data tracking and outcome measurement efforts. While we are proud of the many successes listed here, at the end of the day, it is what the kids accomplish that means the most to us. Together, we are committed to ensuring that our members have access to high quality programs and services that will inspire and enable them to reach their full potential. This is, after all, our “Family Business.”
