A NEW initiative aimed at transforming biking beginners to strong-cyclists gets underway in South Liverpool. Cycle Aigburth, the city’s popular cycling scheme is launching a series of weekly Sunday rides aimed specifically at beginners. The rides, which leave from the Obelisk, Sefton Park Gates (Ullet Road/Aigburth Drive) at 11am and are about 60 minutes long, are designed to increase cyclists’ confidence and proficiency.

EDGE HILL STATION ARCHIVE LAUNCHED

M

etal, the arts organisation behind the regeneration of Edge Hill Station the world’s oldest passenger railway station, have announced a brand new permanent exhibition ‘The Edge Hill Archive’ which will be a ‘living’ documentation of the station’s monumental past. The Edge Hill Archive will open to the public on Sat 12 November from 12pm-4pm, situated in the Welcoming area of Metal – the station’s former Boiler House. Edge Hill Station is of significant importance to the local community, Liverpool and the UK. An historic landmark, where Stephenson’s ‘Rocket’ first left for Manchester, Edge Hill possesses a proud history of technological innovation and aspiration. Following over three years of collecting hundreds of interesting stories, memories and insights about the station as well as objects, photographs and memorabilia, METAL and a dedicated group of volunteers called Future Station, the history of Edge Hill Station can now be shared online across the world and the exciting digital exhibition at the station can now be enjoyed by visitors and passengers alike.

The archive has been split up into ten diffe ent categoriesi cluding shops and shopping, social life, war, change and communities and will feature spoken memories which will be played into the space in addition to physical records. There will also be frequent discussions and community events were local people can share their memories of the station in addition to commenting on the memories of others. Christmas ClassiCs return to liverpool Cathedral with a sense of sound Liverpool Cathedral’s Choristers will join voices with renowned local choir Sense of Sound Singers for an exciting evening of Christmas music on December 3 rd . This time the action moves onto the main floor for the annual Christmas event. BBC Radio personality Roger Philips returns to host the evening of popular sacred and secular Christmas music in aid of Claire House and the Cathedral. Rapidly established as a highlight in the Cathedral’s calendar, Christmas Classics has grown in popularity over the years and for the first time takes over the entire Cathedral. Her sister in law, Lila Young died on the 20th August from Breast Cancer and Suzy and her husband Neil have been working to raise awareness and raise much needed funds for Breakthrough. Suzy came up with the idea of a raffle and wear PINK for the day, pay £1.00 for all tenants in the POL & Cunard Buildings and used her contacts in hotels and restaurants in Liverpool to gain amazing prizes from the likes of Hotel Indigo, The Racquet Club and the prestigious Hughes Holiday Homes. Thank you for opening Liverpool Fashion Week. What did you enjoy the most? The whole night!I love fashion and to be able to get the opportunity to open Liverpool Fashion Week is an honour. You are very fashion conscious with the opening of your own boutique. Tell us about it. Yes I am but not to the point where I obsess about it. I like trying new styles and throwing things together When you took on the role of Mercedes, did you imagine she would be so popular? No I didn’t. I thought she would be hated. She can be a bitch bitch but actually the public are warming towards her. Your amazing figure is well documented in the press, does that bother you? No, I fluctuate a lot and I am aware of that and that seems to interested the media. It isn’t deliberate, as long as `i am healthy I don’t care. Your health and fitness background must help. what regime do you follow? I see my personal trainer twice a week and try and fit in an hour of cardio and one body pump class every week. Any beauty tips? Less is more! What’s your favourite item in your wardrobe? Flesh coloured Laboutins that I treated myself to recently for my birthday.

What did you learn from it? You cane never stop learning, keep challenging yourself. Would you consider any more reality TV shows? Not at the moment. What are your plans for Christmas? France with my mum, Roger my boyfriend and his family. What was your last big splurge on your credit card? A Herve Leger top What is your favourite pampering treat? Who knows. I love what I am doing right now, I appreciate my life and what I have in it. Have you any burning ambition you want to fulfill? Not really, I wouln’t mind doing an underwear modelling campaign for boobs and bums, it’s been a while since I got my kit off and think it’s about time! 11

The restaurant looks fantastic. It is decorated in a contemporary punjabi fashion and can seat 400 diners at a time. It’s open for lunch if there’s a conference at the nearby ACC, and opens 5 til midnight during the week, 3 til midnight Sunday. After a short wait we were shown to our table which was a private booth offering a view of the restaurant and the echo wheel. Russell, our waiter, advised us that he would be able to help us negotiate the menu, which carries a huge range of punjabi dishes for every taste and palate. We began the meal with the traditional poppadums and a well stocked pickle tray. Interestingly all the pickles are hand made in the kitchen by a specific chef, and an explanation of what each one contains can be found under each dish!

The starters arrived on sizzling skillets and Russell again advised the best dips to accompany the different foods. Feasting on a selection of samosas, chicken & lamb boti, spicy king prawns, fish tikka and more we began to wonder whether we’d have room for the main course!! I had the option of the lamb on or off the bone, I chose on, as it keeps the meat moist and gives the sauce better flavour. The king prawns enjoyed by my colleague alasdair were succulent, juicy and perfectly complemented by the tomato garlic and ginger sauce. Side orders of pilau rice, tarka daal and tandoori roti were the best we’ve ever tasted. Desserts offer a tempting finale to your meal with a simple range of traditional and non traditional sweet treats. We plumped for a belgian waffle with ice cream which was the perfect end to a great evening’s dining and soothed our tingling mouths from the delicious spices of previous dishes.

itting on the fringe of Liverpool city centre, at the top of Bold Street lies one of the cleanest restaurants I have ever had had the pleasure to dine in (and I go to a lot). The wooden floor was sparkling, the authentic Italian ornaments were gleaming and the aroma of freshly cooking fish along with the Italian music was very welcoming. We sat opposite the bar looking out of the large windows which streamed a huge amount of light into the cosy space. This has to be the best place to buy and eat fresh fish in Liverpool. As a dedicated fish restaurant you can have traditional freshly cooked fish and chips, or be more adventurous. A wide selection of delicious non-fish dishes is fully available for those who are not really fish fans, so there is no excuse at all for not going! For antipasta, I chose the Smoked Haddock Rarebit, my smoked haddock served on a toasted ciabatta topped with welsh rarebit and a garlic salsa verde, which was absolutely delicious. My husband, who isn't really that fond of fish, chose the Suppli di Pesce; home made Italian fish cakes served with a mixed salad and tartare sauce. It went down extremely well.

For mains, I had the special from the blackboard - Seared Tuna Loin with home made thickly cut chips and sauted spinach with butter and parmesan. Oh my god, this was absolutely gorgeous. My mouth tingled with the medley of flavours and the tuna was cooked to perfection. My husband had the full Sea bass with new potatoes in garlic butter and mixed vegetables. The fish fell lightly from the bone and was sweet and succulent. Our 2 year old had the fish pie, it had to be ordered as the Club Fish's reputation precedes itself with this classic dish. It was served piping hot and included a mixture of cod, haddock and salmon in a white sauce topped with mashed potato and parmesan crust. Fortunately for me she barely touched it so we took it home for our dinner where it was eagerly devoured. Safe to say, it definitely lives up to its reputation. Despite being heartily satisfied with our meal, we managed to squeeze in a latte and Torta Valter, an unbelievably moist and tasty chocolate and almond cake served with cream. The Italian Fish Club is an adorably quaint restaurant. The service is impeccable, the food is divine and the whole experience is five star. You can't beat it. 13

iverpool Fashion Week took place 18-22 October. Over 3000 people visited the event, which took place in Hard Days Night, MODO, Newz Bar and The Marriott. Sixty five models had spray tans by Fake Bake and hair styled by Hooka. There were 40 catwalk shows across 5 days, 27 of those local and new designers from our region, making Liverpool Fashion Week the biggest fashion event in the North West of the UK.

ell another fashion week has been and gone with great success and amazing press coverage but even those of us who don’t wear make-up all the time need some help with their skin and I’m sure even our models need a bit of TLC aswell. Add to that the weather and central heating playing havoc with our skin and with us all being super busy we need to get clever and product savvy to keep it nourished,smooth,radient and moisturised without cutting into our busy lives. So in the name of research this month I’ve had the chance to experience Bliss and become Blissed out. For those of you not in the know Bliss is THE #1 skincare company in the US and is found in no less than 13 countries offering cutting edge technology with a “tonguein-chic” attitude - no wonder they’ve won countless beauty awards! Bliss have just opened doors in Debenhams Manchester with a beauty room on site offering facials,eye treatments and waxing coupled with expert advice for the right products to be using at home and as someone with sensitive skin I was a touch apprehensive about the new ranges....but I soon learnt I had nothing to fear! First up was the ‘fabulous foaming face wash’(£18.40) which is a 2-in-1 oil free cleanser and exfoliator that left my skin soft and smooth, next was ‘lid & lash makeup remover’(£12.30)that actually took my waterproof mascara off and didn’t irritate my lenses!Then came my new must have product of the year..........’Triple oxygen Instant Energising Mask’ (£39.90). All I can say is WOW,WOW,WOW.......this is a home version of Bliss’ most famous facial and instantly delivers glowing,radient revitalised skin by delivering a shot of oxygen,anti oxidents & a huge dose of vitamin C (this comes off the back of research that shows oxygen levels reaching our facial tissues can drop as much as 70% by the time we hit 30! Eeekkk!!) I definately saw a difference straight away and this was after ONE use at this point. ‘Daily detoxifying facial toner’(£20.50) followed the mask and this felt so nice without over drying or tightening my skin, coupled with it being a fab primer for makeup (always a must for me!) For those whose eyes are an area of concern the ‘Triple oxygen Instant Energising Eye Gel’(£42) - that VOGUE calls ‘the definition of sleep in a bottle & promises to banish

bags in an instant’.......I must say I’m inclined to agree with caffeine to depuff,oxygen to revitalise and Vitamin C to brighten - a definite must after fashion week!! Out of all the products I could have chosen from my moisturiser of choice came from ‘The youth as we know it’ range - the anti aging moisture cream (£52.90) has 10!! advanced ingredients,can be used day or night & used everywhere; truly a multi tasker and a must for us busy girls. Now for those that like their technology and gizmo’s there’s the ‘Pore-fector gadget’ (£127 approx)....... this will truly amaze and wonder even the most sceptical of you out there. It a dual action tool working on sonic vibrations (125000 vibrations per milisecond to be exact) and it shakes up pores, power washes them and deep cleans and eliminates impurities , then on the second setting use it to help massage treatments/moisturisers into the skin. This scarily gives instant results that will have you queuing to get your mitts on this gadget! Top this with the ‘No zit sherlock’ purifying range containing 2% salicylic acid to really blast those blackheads and improve uneven skin tone amongst other things, goodies for those hands and feet including softening socks and gloves lined with a self activating gel that works in just 20 minutes (really!!) and the nicest, most gorgeous smelling bath and body range I’ve come across and for those of us who really have a tough time with those ‘problem areas’ then ‘Fat Girl Slim’ range is for you. It works by stimulating the circulation and contouring the body, reducing the appearance of cellulite, stimulates the drainage of fluid retention and toxins!! Phew - with proven results I’m first in this queue!! but Tulissa is a really good friend of ours so we will definitely be heading to the studios to support her backstage. Do you feel the need to always look the part for the cameras? No, but we are always aware that there might be someone trying to pap us whilst nipping out for some milk or something. i Rochelle, I remember seeing you perform at The Carling Club two years ago as a support act. You have come a long way since then. Oh gosh, yes, I look back now and always dreamed we would be here now but never expected it. Do you feel a lot of pressure to behave correctly as a lot of young girls see you as role models? I don’t get stressed out about it but I am aware of our responsibility to behave in a certain way as yes, there are a lot of young, impressionable girls out there. As long we we do

what we do, I am proud of who we are and I think a lot of our fans can relate to us. Tell us about your new single. It’s a big ballard , All Fired, Up. It’s doing something completely opposite to what we normally do, it’s a raw, emotional song, It has taken the best part of a year to put the album together and we wrote it and are very proud of it. Will you be performing on the X Factor this year as a guest? I am not sure, we never know what is going to happen on that show,

Will she be taking time out from the band as she adjusts to being a mum? No not at all, she’s pregnant, not ill and everyone has baby’s and gets on with work, it’s no different for Molly. Obviously she will rest after the birth but then she’ll be back in the studio as normal and just bring the baby with her. Bring at the top of your game can you chose who you work with? Well we can certainly ask. We wan tto collaborate with Ne Yo but to be honest we are so happy with what we have achieved and it’s a good feeling to sell out arenas. It’s a reminder of how well we have done. We always love coming to Liverpool, the crowdis just always just up for it. 25

hen Lewis’s, Liverpool’s original department store, closed its doors to the public for the final time in May last year, its Famous Magical Grotto was already being dismantled and transported to Rapid Hardware in Williamson Square, where it is now situated. ALED JONES hen you think of Christmas, what springs to mind? The Snowman and its star, Aled Jones. Now Aled is perfectly placed to star alongside west end performer Adam Cooper in this year’s spectacular seasonal performance of “White Christmas the Musical”. It promises to be an exciting beginning to the Christmas festivities. The show will be sure to propel excitement across the city. Talking of the show, he says,”It’s a big production, a west end show, and Liverpool is getting to see it before the West End which is absolutely fantastic and an honour for us to perform at The Empire.” And working alongside Adam, he says, “We have a great relationship and really bounce off each other” Adam Cooper is a regular on the London theatre circuit, performing in many well-known stage productions such as Billy Elliot and Swan Lake, he describes his character ‘Private Davis’ as “a bit of a womaniser”, He admits that he’s having a lot of fun in this role and is enjoying the company his co-star Aled who is playing “Bob Wallace” originally played by Bing Crosby in the 1954 movie version. Through his regularity on stage, he explains “I find it easy to move from one role to another, I just have to completely forget the last character I was playing and move on”. For those who have never heard of or seen White Christmas the Musical, the play is set in the midst of World War 2, and touches upon the lives of two American Soldiers ‘Private Davis’ and ‘Bob Wallace’ After a near death experience whilst fighting in Europe, the two decide when they return home they will join together to create a performing duo that will take America by storm. The play takes us through the many tribulations the men face along the way to fame, love, seduction, financial austerity and tough friendships, all set against the snowy season of Christmas. The show promises to capture the holiday spirit and dazzle the audience with show stopping dance performances and outstanding singing from Aled Jones and the rest of the cast, Aled says, “The play has a family feeling. Anybody can come and see it”. Over the Christmas period Aled will be spending his time in Liverpool with his family, as the play runs from 22nd Dec through till 7th Jan, although no rest for the singing sensation on Christmas morning as he is live on Radio 2 before being back at the Empire theatre the next day. This will be the second time Aled will be performing in this show, the last time was in 2009 headlining at Manchester’s Lowry theatre. He says “The excitement of the show pulled me back to do it again, There are fantastic dancers, it’s a great story line, it’s got music and dance, what more could you want? I was a big fan of the original play and was thrilled when I was asked to be a part of it again”.

Annalese Ferrari Model and F1 racer, Annalese Ferrari (no that’s not a pun) chats to us about life on the runway and freeway.

Tell us about some of your most thrilling races? I think the races I’ve won are the most thrilling - the one that I remember the most is when I started from 9th on the grid and managed to overtake all of the cars in front of me to win - this is quite difficult to do when all of the cars are to the same spec but I managed it, I think I just got determined, took some risky overtaking manoeuvres and won! There was also a race where I beat 23 boys and I was just about to be handed the winners trophy when a few of the competitors demanded a stewards enquiry as they were convinced I shouldn’t have won - because I was a girl - but eventually everything was found to be in order and the one that made the most fuss had to award me with the trophy!

Which came first, modelling or motor racing? Racing came first - I started karting in my early teens and then progressed through to racing cars at the age of 17, initially in Formula Renault and Formula Ford, a training ground for future Formula 1 drivers. I got into modelling when my boss entered me into Miss Wirral, a Miss England heat and my modelling career went from there, doing numerous fashion shows including Liverpool Fashion Week and photographic shoots. How did you get into racing? I always watched Schumacher in his prime F1 days and wanted to be like him. So when my mum took me for a fun karting party, and I was not only fast but managed to win the whole thing, I knew that’s what I wanted to do. Once you get behind the wheel of a racing car there is no other feeling like it. I’ve also been trained in stunt driving which is really good fun too. What training did you require? First of you have to have an official racing licence from the Motor Sport Association. The theory test requires you to know about all the different flags used in racing and safety rules and the driving part requires you to demonstrate an ability to handle a car at speed on a track and there is also a medical. After this, you are required to keep familiarity with rules and the more testing and trackdays you can do, the better you become. I also have driver coaches who help you improve lap times and racing lines around corners and as it is quite a demanding sport, there is an element of physical and mental fitness training as well.

How do you feel when you’re on the track? It’s exciting and fun to be racing and I get very competitive, the adrenaline kicks in and I want to win! It can get quite bolshy on the track during races so you have to make bold moves and stay alert 100%. Is it quite a male dominated industry? It is still fairly male dominated, there are grid girls who do the promotional side of things but most of the time the racing grid is made up of males, I have always been the only female in each race I’ve competed in. But there are more girls taking up racing now and there are even quite a few female mechanics and engineers. How do you cope with that? In general there isn’t really much sexism or discrimination - in fact being a girl sometimes has it’s benefits as it generates more publicity so the teams start to negotiate over having you drive for them! It’s also quite fun when you beat the boys, but a lot accept now that girls can race and win, at the end of the day when everyone has their helmets on and are sitting on the grid, physical differences don’t count. I’m also the first female stunt driving instructor at the Terry Grant Stunt Academy which is quite fun, some men get in the car and think they know what they’re doing and they don’t need to listen - they soon accept I need to tell them what to do! Where do you want to go from here? In 2012, I will be racing in the AirAsia Renault Clio Cup which is a support race to the British Touring Car Championship. This means it gets live television coverage on ITV and I’m currently in talks with the team that runs Lewis Hamilton’s brother - when I was at Rockingham a few weeks ago, Lewis was sitting on the next table in the same awning!

I’m also due to race in the new Electric Vehicle Cup, solely for electric cars in the new Westfield iRacer and I’ll also be taking part in the Autosport Celebrity Karting Challenge in January as part of Ben Collins’(ex Stig) team. Moving forward in racing, I would like to reach top level sportscars in FIA GTs and hopefully compete in the Le Mans 24 Hour race. In 2012, I also have my UK Karting challenge where I am driving a green fuelled go kart from John O’Groats to Lands End for charity and to promote green fuels. What reaction do you get when you tell people what you do? Sometimes people are quite shocked as I am quite girly - I still like to have my hair done and make up on under my helmet and have my nails done, I’m even getting my helmet sprayed leopard print and I think my car for 2012 will also be leopard print! Just because it’s a typical male sport, doesn’t mean the girls have to dress like them - it’s fun to be different and it’s important to keep your own identity and as a model, I have a reputation to hold up! Tell us about your modelling career. I have modelled for lots of designers and retailers, my favourite being Marc Cain, as well as lots of fashion shows including Liverpool Fashion Week, Liverpool International Tennis Tournament, Wirral Fashion Festival and many more. I’ve done some beauty pageants including Miss England heats and I’ve also done some presenting for national press and even a supercar garage in London! This year I have been published for modelling, stunt driving and racing in a lot of magazines and even on BBC radio. Are you sponsored by anyone? Yes in 2011, I have been sponsored by Terry Grant Stunt Academy, Fuel Topia and AF Trading. However for 2012, we are still looking for investors and sponsors to support me in the Renault Clio Cup and we have generated a lot of interest already. Then it is the racing off season until the Renault Clio Cup starts on 31st March 2012 but I have some kart racing over the winter period and testing in preparation for 2012 racing as well. So many of my friends came, including my fellow Big Brother housemates and everyone had a great time. Heat Holders really are “the ultimate thermal sock”, perfect for any outdoor activity, especially with the cold weather which is approaching, but also just to wear around the house. The shoot went really well and it was really nice to go to the countryside for the day and to see Emma and Graham. This month I also did a week long competition for ‘This Morning’ with Homebase. Homebase offered viewers £250,000 worth of DIY essentials and I had a great time filming with the team. Job 76 = Build a bird table

Building your own bird table is a great way to encourage feathered friends into your garden. It is simple to do and will reward you with years of pleasure. Birds are not fussy and their requirements are very simple, so you can be as creative as you like with the size and shape of your bird table. Ideally the bird table should be approximately 1.5m (5ft) from the ground, not too far from cover but out of jumping range from cats and grey squirrels.

3”x3” timber or newel post 3”x2” timber 2”x2” timber 45mm Screws Plywood Planed battens

STAGE 1

STAGE 1 The centre post/beam is going to play a large role in the stability of the bird table, so I’m using an old Newel post from a staircase. This is more than suitable and will also add to the look of the bird table, however, if you don’t have such an item you can use 3”x3” timber. For stability, your centre post/beam will need to be supported by 4 small legs. Using your chop saw, cut your 3”x2” timber to size so that you have 4 equally sized legs. Again using your chop saw, cut angles into both ends of all 4 feet. Next, using your drill driver screw your legs to your centre post/beam and use a spirit level to check it stands level. STAGE 2 For your feeding tray, use your chop saw to cut a piece of 18mm plywood to around 400mm square and using your drill driver, screw down to the top of your centre post/beam. Top Tip: A rim about 10mm high around the edge of your feeding tray will help stop food from being knocked or blown off. Remember to leave gaps at the corners to allow rain to drain away and to make cleaning easy. You are now ready to build the roof supports for your feeding tray. Use your chop saw to cut 4 lengths of 2”x2” timber to about 250mm long and screw them down in all four corners of your feeding tray using your drill driver. If you screw down your roof supports from underneath the food tray, the screw heads will not be visible. STAGE 3 For the roof, use your chop saw to cut two sheets of plywood to around 450mm square. Fix the edge of both sheets of plywood to a batten, forming a pitched roof effect and secure the roof to your roof supports using a drill driver and screws. Top Tip: Make your roof slightly bigger than your feeding tray to protect your visiting birds and food from the rain. Finally, fill your bird table with wild bird food and sit back while your garden springs to life!

Who are you and What is your background My name is Su Grainger age 46 I am a singer/songwriter, voice coach and founder and Musical Director Of Singing Our Socks Off a community choir across Merseyside Why did you set up your choir Iinitially set up SOSO as a singing club to allow enthusiastic people to get together regularly and enjoy singing, It was something I wanted to do myself but didn’t want to join a formal choir and couldn’t find anything that suited me, so I decided to create my own workshops What did you hope to achieve I wanted to run a series of classes in which people could attend regularly without feeling they were committed to attend and come and go as they pleased, like any other exercise class, I also wanted to expand the classes and create an image of Singing Our Socks Off as a way for anyone, whatever level and experience to discover what a fun activity singing in a group is and how it can have a big impact in people s lives. Initially I did struggle as I had no financial input, or indeed formal training, but we now have a number of classes on Merseyside with over 100 members Why is singing so important in your life Apart from singing making me feel great personally, I have come to learn and experience what it has done for my members and friends, there are many studies about the benefits of singing, not just emotionally but physically and psychologically too,. The feedback I receive from people I teach or coach humbles me every day when they tell me the impact and difference it has made in their lives, and how it has helped them through some very difficult situations, personally it has also helped me cope with caring for my husband who has a long term illness and disability What do you offer others? We offer a range of services from singing and voice training workshops, to one to one personal coaching. We also have piano and song Writing courses Myself and my Business partner Billy Hui are both regular public speakers and appear on local radio, we offer Public speaking and vocal confidence courses and fear of public speaking courses What’s the definition of a voice coach A voice coach is someone who can teach you how to sing safely, improve your voice, and discover your potential in a safe and effective

manor. A vocal coach, as oppsosed to a singing teacher will have at least some understanding and knowledge of how your voice works physiologically Initially when I started coaching I taught the emotional side of delivering a song and how you can interpret your music and engage with an audience. Over the past 3 years I have trained with industry leaders from the field of voice from ENT surgeons, speech and language therapists and experiences vocal coaches and singing teachers through the British Voice Association, we attend regular conferences and courses to study how to use our voice safely and what our body does physiologically when we sing, speak and communicate have you trained anyone Well knoWn Not yet, but some of my students have great potential! I am also a judge at the national Open Mic Uk Competition, one of the biggest talent searches in the Country and I am always pleased to see and hear the real talent our city has to offer. Why did you take up a career singing I love Singing and how it make me feel and I was in a situation where I couldn’t work for someone else or in a tradional 9 to 5 job, but needed an outlet, Initially the idea was a part time hobby and I didn’t take it too serious, it soon changed as my passion for knowledge and enthusiasm to learn how to teach groups and individuals grew. I am very fortunate to be working in an area that I love and (I used to find this hard to say), but I am actually quite good at too! my daughter is 9 and loves to sing, What advice Would you give to encourage her At 9 she is only just beginning to develop her voice and discover what it can do; I see so many adults who decided at a young age they couldn’t sing so stopped trying! I would say encourage her to explore, sing a range of songs she enjoys, perform at every opportunity tell her if she gets it wrong it doesn’t matter she is still in training It’s the adults around her that I would prefer to advise as negative comments, or even a slight wince or judgmental attitude can kill confidence in youngsters singing abilities. So Mum, Dad her self image and confidence in herself as a personwill help her voice shine through. When she is around 14 or 15 she can then think about formal voice coaching and training

Are you still a Birmingham fan or do you have mixed loyalties after playing and working for different clubs? A bit of both really. Obviously I’ve been lucky enough to play and work at a few different clubs in my time, so I still have a great interest in how they’re each all doing. However, if you put a gun to my head then I’d say I’m foremost a Birmingham fan. After all, I am a local boy, and that’s where my roots are – but that’s not to take away from the affection I have for the other sides I’ve been at.

Who was your favourite football manager to work for, and who was the most inspiring? Bob Saxton was my favourite manager, simply because the six or seven years that I played under him at Blackburn were my ‘golden period’ if you like. That was the time when I became the player I always knew I could be - playing with a great bunch of lads in a good, strong solid team that did the club proud year in year. The most inspiring manager I worked for was, without question, “Big” John McGrath at Preston. He was a great motivator with a sharp sense of humour and had the most amazing oratory skills of anyone i’ve ever met, which obviously all made his team-talks the stuff of legend. I could spend all day retelling some of his finest quotes, but - restassured - plenty of funny ones are included in my book... Can you see yourself going back into the Premier League as a Physio? Yes, I can certainly see that happening. I’ve had a year out working on the book, which has been great fun, but i’m first and foremost a physio. In fact, lately i’ve been treating the England Under 17 squad - who are a great bunch of lads - so i’m still actively involved in that line of work. I think my experience from the clubs i’ve worked for would stand me in good stead at another Premiership side or a major Championship team.

Football in the 1970’s was a harsh environment, do you think if you were given more confidence at Birmingham you would have been telling a completely different story? Yes, I think that would be the case – though I’m not sure there would have been a book at all then! Certainly the first section – where I go into detail about my struggles with nerves in my early days at Birmingham – wouldn’t have been applicable at all. If I’d had more confidence then who knows what I could have achieved in my playing career? I certainly think I had the natural ability to play at the very top, but the confidence issue stopped that properly manifesting itself when I was starting out. Having said that – as I always tell anyone who’ll listen – confidence is one of the absolute fundamentals for any football player. If you’ve got no belief in yourself then you might as well not be able to kick the ball in the first place. That’s how important it is to the game. Do you think a return of a longer summer break or the introduction of a Christmas break would be beneficial to the players health and therefore improve their game? A longer summer break would definitely be something I’d introduce, but what also needs to change is the way clubs approach the period too. In my opinion, more of an emphasis should be placed on allowing the players to properly relax and unwind. Look at Wayne Rooney now for instance. He freely admits he did nothing over the Summer, and you can see the benefit it’s had for him – he’s been brilliant so far this season and looks stronger than ever! The idea of a Christmas break is a different kettle of fish though. Usually we tend to get our worst weather in January, so if we weren’t playing over the holiday period then there could be a pile-up of rearranged fixtures toward the end of the season. Because of that, I just can’t see how it’s workable right now. What’s next for you? I love the work I’ve been doing lately with the FA, but I’m a strong believer in fate so I’m just enjoying going with the flow and taking each day as it comes…oh, and promoting my book too! cho Arena had a bouncing October with some true international superstars gracing the stage – Snoop Dogg and Rihanna no less! We also saw Liverpool boxer Tony Bellew do the city proud in his thrilling match against Welshman Nathan Cleverly. Despite the judges’ final decision going marginally against Tony, I think Liverpool could still have a future World Champion in the making and we can expect to see a lot more from Tony in the future. JO JONAS You’ve only been here a couple of days but how are you finding the UK so far? It’s been great. I always love coming over to Europe, the response is always great. I did the BBC Teen Awards and that was a great time – its good to be back! The BBC Teen Awards were at Wembley Arena; did that give you a taster and make you a little bit more excited to be back at the same venue later this month? Yes, it’s always an incredible feeling to play there. It was a great taste tester of what it’s going to be like back here at the end of the month. After being in a group it must be a little bit daunting going out by yourself, is it a bit like starting from scratch? Sometimes – it’s cool to be back and to be able to do my solo stuff here. It’s a little bit sometimes scary to be up there by myself but I’ve been getting great support and the band support so overall I’m just happy.

Did he offer you any advice coming from a solo artist? We sort of both gave advice to each other, just to go out there and have a good time and to really enjoy every second, every moment as it can move by so quickly. Who would be your dream collaborations to work with in the future? Maybe Kanye West, British artists like Adele, Tinie Tempah, then Foster The People, something a little different from what I’m used to. That way it shows a different side to the music that I am making. How different was the creative process with making an album as a solo artist in comparison to making an album with your group [Jonas Brothers]? It took a WHILE! I wanted to really spend time on this album - to take my time to make sure I made music that I was really proud of; that I wasn’t holding back from anything necessarily. I didn’t want to just rush this album at all so I was very pleased with taking the time, and really finding the sound that I wanted to go with. There’s been some times with my brothers that we’ve done some things and really just rushed them, like making records quickly and I wanted to take my time with this one. Have your brothers been supportive of your solo career? My brothers have been very supportive. They’re incredible and I’m really thankful for the fact that they’re happy for me to

Throughout your music career you’ve also been dipping your toe into a bit of acting, is this something that you would like to do more of in the future? Yes I would love to; I really enjoy doing movie roles or acting roles. I’m actually working on a project with a friend of mine out in LA, we’ve just got a writer involved so it’s very very exciting. I’ve got a few plans for next year – at the beginning of the year I may be making this movie that I’m thinking about creating and then I think what it’s looking like right now is that we may try and do a world tour of some sort and definitely make more music. I’ll definitely be coming back soon to do my own tour – I’m not exactly sure when but it’s in the works. If everything goes to plan with your solo career would that mean you would have to put the Jonas Brothers on hold? No we’re still going to be doing Jonas Brothers stuff, nothing yet is plan, no specific stuff for when we’re going to make our next album, we’re just taking our time with it. As The Hilton Liverpool launches it’s PlayGround VIP Club, we chatted to Alex Gerrard who has worked on the exclusive project. How did you get involved with PlayGround? The owner George Panayiotou, from The Ability Group - the owners of the Hilton Liverpool - approached me to get involved a while back and when I saw the designs and the ideas for the club it looked fantastic so I immediately agreed to help out. What’s the story behind the name? I think they feel it’s going to be a place where everyone had let go of their inhibitions and have some fun. Who are the target customers? Anyone who is looking for a seriously fun and glamorous night out. What appealed to you about PlayGround? There are some great clubs and bars in Liverpool but this one has a really luxurious feel to it. The owners of the Hilton Liverpool have put in so much effort and attention to detail that I think people from all over the northwest will want to travel to go to there, it’s going to be well worth the journey. What will your role be with regards to the memberships? I’ve been asked to design the membership cards for the Private Playroom section of the club. The main room at PlayGround is open to everyone and you don’t have to be a member, but there is a more intimate room with a separate entrance and that is for the members and they can bring a guest, get waitress service, and invites for all the VIP parties and after-show events. These memberships are by invite only and I was flattered to be asked to design a card to suit the sort of clientele that PlayGround is going to attact. What do you love about it? The really luxurious feel of the venue, you feel like you could be anywhere in the world. And the added bonus is

that there’s a beauty salon next to the ladies toilets. Who do you want it to appeal to? I want it to appeal to people who are looking for a great night out. Tell us about the Bentley chauffeur service This is another one of the member’s perks. They can book ahead and get picked up by a brand new Bentley Mulsanne and brought right to the door of the venue. What other benefits are there? The benefits are there for everyone not just members. There is a breathtaking LED screen and a stage for live performances, great bartenders, stylish interior and lighting. It’s a beautiful venue and I think people in Liverpool are going to love it. How much does it cost? It’s going to be pretty standard late night venue prices for the northwest. The PlayGround owners want people to offer good value for money and have a good time and not worry too much about the cost. The memberships for the year though will cost £500 and members and their guests will only will be allowed in the Private PlayRoom area. How will you be spending Christmas? Probably at home with the family. What are your plans for work next year? Haven’t got any plans just yet as I’m going to take some time off to spend with the baby.
