Creative Work
During my time as an architecture student, I have been fortunate to visit, sketch, and study many of the world’s great places and buildings. I admire traditional and classical architecture and urbanism that achieves a unity of parts through ornament, proportion, form and void. As an architect I seek to engage classical principles and contribute to the design of places that are vital, beautiful, and uplifting.

DORIC AEDICULE Corby Hall Notre Dame, IN
The first semester design studio consisted of an introduction to the elements and principles of Classical Architecture, including the Classical Orders. The first of three one-week assignments involved the design of a Doric Aedicule to frame a prominent statue on the Notre Dame Campus, was focused on Father William Corby. A chaplain of the Irish Brigade, he is depicted giving a general absolution shortly before the Battle of Gettysburg.

MOTHER OF SORROWS PAVILION
St. Mary’s Lake Notre Dame, IN
The second one-week design projects called for a pavilion on the Notre Dame Campus. The design employs the Ionic order and is located on St. Mary’s Lake. It is designed as a place for gathering and contemplation, with westernly views allowing visitors to observe the setting sun. An exedra contains a statue of the Mother of Sorrows, framed by the lake beyond and the building’s Ionic colonnade.
CORINTHIAN CHAPEL INTERIOR Notre Dame, IN The third one-week assignment called for the interior design of a small chapel using the Corinthian order. Intended for student use, this edifice is named for the nativity of Christ. Taking precedent from French and English neoclassical chapels, the chapel is a simple and yet rich homage to Our Lady of the Nativity.

For the culminating project of the first semester design studio, students were asked to design a new private arts academy on an urban site in Chicago, north of the river. My proposal, an urban infill, has the aim of completing the city block - one of the neighborhood’s few remaining at the scale of 3-4 stories. While the most common approach to the project involved the demolition of St. James Commons and its recently opened plaza on Huron and Rush Streets, the approach I took allows for a consistent urban infill as well as the continued functioning of the St. James Cathedral campus.

GRECIAN STUDY CENTER
Madison, Indiana
For this project, students were asked to design a new hotel and conference center in the Grecian Style. The site given was an open parcel of land in historic Madison, IN, a sloping site with views toward the Ohio River. The site was also located on the grounds of the historic Lanier Mansion, a Grecian Mansion designed by Francis Costigan during the American Greek Revival. My proposal, inspired by asymmetrical Greek structures such as the Erechtheion, was designed as an object sitting in dynamic relationship to the landscape. Situated for maximum sightlines toward the river, it is also aligned with the axis of the (also asymmetrical) cluster of the Lanier Mansion and its outbuildings.

THORNHILL PAVILIONS Morton Arboretum Lisle, Illinois My thesis project for the Master of Architecture degree is a proposal for a new complex of buildings located in a large Arboretum in the suburbs of Chicago. The main programmatic elements are banquet facilities and a center for outdoor education. Situated on the crest of a gently sloping hill, formerly the location of the mansion built by the Arboretum’s founder. Built in the early twentieth century, this original structure was influenced by English Arts and Crafts architecture. Given this precedent, and the suitability for the climate and wooded setting, my design is influenced by the large country houses of Lutyens and Richard Norman Shaw.

UNIVERSITA S. GIOVANNI PAOLO II
Via Giulia, Roma
The project for the Italian Classicism design studio, completed in Rome, was an urban infill along the via Giulia, near the historic center of Rome and the Tiber River. Each student developed a program of their choosing; my proposal is for an International University Campus - including residential and mixed-use buildings as well as a library with its garden, a student center including an auditorium and restaurant, and a small chapel. These form an urban courtyard or piazza, which is also defined by theater-like steps and a fountain element, navigating a grade change along the site. In addition to the urban design, I developed the architecture of the student center building, a palazzo which has street frontage along the via Giulia as well as access from the piazza. An extended urban proposal seeks to create a pedestrian connection across the bridge, and convert the existing penitentiary grounds into academic buildings: a more engaging use for this desirable land in the heart of Rome.

TOWER AND BRIDGE SPANNING STRUCTURE Versailles Study Abroad Program
This project consisted of an analysis of an existing builidng, including the construction of a basswood structural model of an important junction in the building.
For this project, students were asked to construct a structural model of unbundled wooden strands, at least 1 meter in height, with a horizontal member spanning roughly one meter between the towers.
The Expodach pavilion in Hanover, Germany, features a canopy-like roof structure built of formed wooden and steel members, which support a tent-like fabric.
This project was completed in teams of four. I was responsible for the design of the interlocking arch module and distributed loading system, and also helped to develop the junction of arch to tower.
The scale model shown below represents one of the tower-like mast structures that acts as support to the wooden trusses.
The structure, 280 g, suspended a load of 16 kg (35 lb) and remained standing. This was the best performance of our class and a strength-to-weight ratio of roughly 60: 1.

CLASSICAL ARCHITECTURE IN REVIT 3D Models of Notre Dame Semester 1 Design projects
One of the exciting things about studying classical architecture is how well it pairs with 3D modeling software. In addition to the manually drafted drawings produced during the first semester of the Classical Architecutre curriculum at Notre Dame, I used James Gibbs’ treatise for drawing the classical Orders as a basis for creating the Orders in 3D, using Autodesk Revit. Shown below are some examples I developed using Gibbs’ proportions for the Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian orders.

During two summers, I worked for a French company specializing in 3D modeling of architectural products and building components. During this time, due to prior experience using Revit, I conducted research into best practices for modeling fully parametric families (.rfa format) and produced a 164-page user guide complete with a fully documented tutorial for creating Revit families. The tutorial - a particular door and manufacturer type of moderate complexity - contains a step-by-step approach designed to form future 3D modelers. This tool has been widely used and appreciated in past years, as the company now performs all 3D modeling using Revit. On the next page are some different types of models I worked on, in collaboration with another individual, for three clients.

During internships with Worn Jerabek Architects in Chicago, I assisted in the design of single-family and multifamily residential projects, from schematic design through construction documents. I used 3D ‘BIM’ modeling (Graphisoft Archicad) and graphic design software to create the perspective renderings shown here. During my second period of employment at WJA, the office used BIM software at each phase of the project. The projects shown, as well as these images are the results of collaboration in small teams. AEROVILLE SHOPPING CENTER Internship in Project Management, Coteba (Group Artelia)
Paris, FR
Working for the international engineering and project management firm Coteba (Artelia Group), I participated in the realisation of this significant addition to the Paris periphery, a new shopping village and cinema complex directly adjacent to the Paris Charles de Gaulle airport. The program is rich and varied, with a 12-screen cinema complex, numerous brandname stores, restaurants, a big-box grocery store, over 4000 parking spaces, and a nursery for infants. It is aimed at both visitors coming from the nearby airport, as well as nearby residents and airport personnel. 26

My role on the project was to assist o the project manager responsible for the unique double-skin facade and the structure (comprised of pre-cast prestressed concrete elements and structural steel). This put me in daily contact and collaboration with the project architect, engineers, and contractors. I particpated in bi-weekly workshops where we solved design challenges, and was responsible for redaction of the subsuquent reports.
