Paradigm Change

Integral World Model 1 Introduction

A rock, a river, a tree; hosts to species long since departed... (Maya Angelou) Witness to what has been Witness to what will be... The earth has changed; what once was is lost, what can be is a potential we now seek.

Who are we, where are we going... We must be moving forward together, sharing the earth in which no group, species or ecosystem can be excluded. The Modern Paradigm has been the dominant paradigm for some time having all the well know features of the “modern era” so often described and lived by much of the worlds populace for 100 years. The good of distributed resources for human betterment, medical and scientific advances, and educational possibilities coupled with improving human rights is well noted, however, the other side of the paradigm has increasingly been shown to have consequences that threaten the development of a mature and caring social fabric and that even threatens the earth’s ecosystems itself. This paradigm has been dominant and thus responsible for what we are becoming. From the Integral perspective there is a mix of perspectives: 1. Improving living conditions, and the promotion of a free society is helping the world get better and less violent. 2. But, there are increasing consequences of pain, an ongoing culture of violence, and even “catastrophe.” 3. However, from the Turquoise level and the encompassing unity insight of the |logos gnosis|*, all is not lost. This available insight can save and rebalance the earth’s ecosystems through an ethos of wellbeing for all. And it can begin to deal with the Leviathan of the Modern Paradigm in ways this Integral World Model hints at. The Integral World Model (IWM) is a short review or overview of key elements we , the Nomadic Think Tank (Nomtt), find necessary to hold a wholistic multi-perspective view of a global context. The Nomtt is an Integral think tank and the following pages illustrate Integrally informed inclusions, and language, as a way of creating one of several Integral tools, (under development), for policy analysis and suggestions from an Integral think tank or Integral consulting group to the wider public, clients, media or Government group. The Integral method is used to layout some foundational elements of a global context and perspective a think tank can use. More than ever before Nomtt asks the question “who are we, and where are we going.” We all share this earth and we must move forward into the future together. Conscious people must use tools of intelligence and wisdom to communicate and promote cultural awakening and conscious policies that will enhance and even save the world. The IWM uses the terminology “Integral Paradigm” to denote an Integral analysis, and “Paradigm Change” to denote an implementation process. To this end the IWM recognizes “paradigm” as a key mode of macro-expression-of-conditions and seeks a synthesis creating movement toward an Integral Paradigm, where several co-paradigm scenarios can coexist and move forward together. Working in a cooperative way to resolve present conflicts and dilemmas. The methodology used for this synthesis approach is the Integral Methodology assessing “all quadrants, all levels, all lines, all states, and all types (AQAL).” The Integral World model is an exploration of the Integral method as a tool for an Integral think tank. In this short introduction to the IWM not every aspect of the method is articulated, of course. This rendition of the model will emphasize key stages and worldviews in a Quadrants matrix in pursuit of an ethos that can guide the whole endeavor (and will briefly touch on aspects of lines and states). * (Ashok Gangadean; as well as “global wisdom” and “global dialogue” terminology)

Integral World Model 2 Global Context and multiple Paradigms

We, the Nomadic Think Tank (Nomtt), found that we desperately needed some Integral tools to work with, that were graphical in nature and kinetic enough to grasp, explain, and create momentum. To use as a guide as we navigated problems, and solutions along the lines of an ethos and vision we established. This is one brief and early tool we are working on. The IWM tool is, we feel, a relevant overview from our worldcentric perspective. It is an attempt at big picture, general systems thinking that would use such tools for creating general overviews for addressing social concerns in a whole systems way. If helpful to others, fine.

Global Context; many of the present and upcoming global crises are manifestations of a long term Modern paradigm dysfunction of unsustainable fossil fuel consumption, unregulated resource consumption, and the unlimited economic growth mentality with little consideration for the care of species and ecosystems beyond the human parochial needs. In a very real sense we have impending overlapping crises, including an energy crisis, a population growth crisis, an economic crisis, the global warming crisis, and ongoing cultural conflicts. A long term of material misuse, overuse, and waste has resulted in extensive and hard to repair environmental devastation. Paradigm change from a dysfunctional unsustainable system must include a synthesis of and integration of psychological, social, and economic domains of society, both local and global. Paradigms usually emphasize one of these domains as primary; Economics, Political type, or, some social value or ideology. Value

Capitalism emphasizes Economic structure as primary. Democratic Capitalism; where Economics and Political Democracy are primary. Communism; where Ideology value and Political authoritarianism dominate. Kibbutz; where social value dominates Politics and economics.

Classic Paradigms must now be modified and experience some paradigm change as co-existent and overlapping with other scenarios guided by an ethos of wellbeing as illustrated in graphic at left. This ethos of the Integral World Model, in light of the present Global context of problems, suggests a cooperative paradigm of co-existing paradigms with ongoing paradigm changes in space and time as the way of compatibility and harmony. The IWM views this from the physical sphere, the noosphere, and the |logos sphere|. The IWM articulates a transformational vision, ethos, and implementation strategy toward a cultural awakening using an Integral Paradigm methodology that leads to an Paradigm Change. Therefore, the first step is to articulate what this ethos is.

The IWM endorses an “ethos of wellbeing;” defined as an ethos of wellbeing for all humans, species, and ecosystems in perpetuity; where the wellbeing of the individual, the wellbeing of the community and Nations, and the wellbeing of institutions is articulated. This brief summary of the IWM defines the term ethos as a combination of gnosis, the knowledge of the principles we can live by and how to implement them, and subtle energy, which is the attunement to the kinetic will and energy to do it. In ethos and vision we have the emergence of what is “not-yet-conscious,” (Ernst Bloch), and the yet-to-be-enacted but that which is absolutely necessary to change paradigms for the better.

Integral World Model 3 Ethos and vision

This ethos has been added to the standard model of the integral methodology, as will be seen in the accompanying graphics. The standard model (refer to p. 19), is used here to illustrate 4 vision perspectives of a Teal-Turquoise nature in its Integral Quadrant methodology, and Nomtt and the IWM add 2 origin emanations, gnosis and compassion. The Teal/Turquoise perspectives are; for individuals(s) a global wisdom is called for; for cultural meme groups participation in a global dialogue and global cooperation is necessary; and, for our institutions not only systems thinking is needed but an ecology of systems is essential, where all our social institutions work together for wellbeing. From this an assessment is made of the current modern paradigm and how that is modified or transcended over time to achieve the goals of wellbeing-for-all-includingecosystems. This is not to say the standard model is flawed or inadequate; just that each organization needs to expand the model to suit their purposes. This implies paradigm change because the existing paradigm, as it is, cannot create an ecology of systems, it cannot be equitable, or achieve global cooperation. It is fundamentally not an ecology, able to work on many levels in harmony, as demonstrated by the very crisis of degradation and cultural conflict we now experience and have experienced for a long time. “Revolution of the past was a cultural change from the embedded problems of a distorted worldview, now revolution is change toward being a human that has the consciousness to sustain the improved changes*.” The ethos-of-wellbeing indicates that we are interconnected and what guides this revolution of ethos, as peaceful, is Global Wisdom; a new globalizing of conscience of an awareness and engagement of the “other” to one of brother and sister. Global Wisdom is not an anecdotal experience we encounter and appreciate in a given moment, but is pivotal and integral to life as an equal co-emphatic to a group of principles that underlie a new society paradigm change. Therefore, this consciousness of Global Wisdom will include the truths of each Paradigm and seek the health and wellbeing of each, as well as transcending their dysfunctions. It reflects the culmination of an individual’s ethos to the level of the Integral globalcentric (Turquoise) level. And, it heralds a movement for cultural meme groups to participate in a direct encounter of the co-creation of the common ground between worldviews; . It will assist an outcome of Global Dialogue between differing worldview cultural groups, and to forge and hold together global alliances for global cooperation and truly sustainable systems. It can also help create an ecology of its systems and institutions to work in harmony, and to change from an economic paradigm of monetary value to one of eco-value and social/wellbeing value. * (The Essays of Henry D. Thoreau by Lewis Hyde, editor)

Key Elements of IWM 4

Elements of IWM carefully structured by the INTEGRAL METHOD: 1. Quadrant matrix, p. 19 2. The 3 levels, stages, and worldviews (LL Quadrant) in a simultaneous holding of worldview perspectives. 3. Key Self(s) for these stage perspectives (UL Quadrant). P. 21

4. The key ethos & vision from a second tier

How does this all come about; a sustainable model of living, an ethos of wellbeing, and paradigm cooperation? And, how do we incorporate an Integral Turquoise transformative insight of an encompassing unity and a vision of non technological change of consciousness gain, restoration of ecosystems, and lifestyle change, in a cultural awakening? Not only are these, a sustainable model of living, an ethos of wellbeing, and paradigm cooperation, the necessary vision but they also are the key elements of the IWM. Other key elements of the IWM to help movement toward cultural awakening are; 1. Important parts of the Integral methodology shown at left. 2. An Integral Paradigm analysis 3. An emphasis on key worldviews and meme groups that will have to move forward together into the future. The IWM recognizes that many schools of thought will come forward in an increasingly problematic future and present a voice in how we as cooperative nations wish to co-exist. There will be many overlapping scenarios and paradigm candidates moving forward into the future, summarized here as “paradigm change.”

So, over time, crises abound and overlap from cultural tensions of inertia and lack of understanding, to the overwhelming data of the empirical domain regarding Climate Change, to our individual struggle to engage our global wisdom in the pragmatic world. But, we must engage this Global Wisdom so the human family can continue to gain psychological health, grow and transition in spite of and simultaneous to the oncoming struggle and storm. We will have to find a way, collectively, to do this. Growth, transition, and transformation will not end because of struggle. They will continue to grow and flourish in spite of struggle. The privileges of the Modern paradigm without Global Wisdom has brought about these overlapping crises and separations one from another, and it is now the responsibility of the emergent paradigms, with Global Wisdom, to sustain all through the struggle without separations, but a new sense of unity. Global actions/solutions for the vision; a sustainable model of living, an ethos of wellbeing, and paradigm cooperation, will require global cooperation to implement, and, the global solutions must be integrated across a full range of the nested social holons from local groups to regional, national and global, with the implication that time and timing will also be a factor in any global transformation.

Paradigm Change as key Process 5 Paradigms coexisting and cooperating

5

Global actions/solutions for the vision of a sustainable model of living, an ethos of wellbeing, and paradigm cooperation implies paradigm change. This century will see a change in paradigm either through a maturing process or through collapse, which would be a destructive path for far too many people. Here paradigm refers to systemic systems and systemic change, and global refers to physical space as well as psychological, holistic, and whole; and includes empathic considerations and general principles. Expressed in some form of logic we can say; to achieve some level of Paradigm change, through an ethos of wellbeing for all, implies achieving a modicum of peace and cooperation and a maximum input of fairness and social equity. This will require that many individuals, groups, and nations tap into a global wisdom that can guide the necessity of peace and cooperation. From many present stories and paradigm scenarios how do we create a working synthesis. This demands paradigm modifications of all paradigm scenarios. This is paradigm change in distinction to some single paradigm shift from say the modern to the postmodern. The logic in an Integral framework might look something like this;

An Integral Turquoise level paradigm is a post market-driven capitalist system where the Modern economic/financial system is dominant over all other domains and concerns. It is a peaceful, cooperative, and an ecologically sustainable system with an ethos of wellbeing for all. We can speculate on this type of paradigm-of–harmony, what it looks and feels like, and design it to some initial first steps. However, society as it is today is nowhere near that reality as a universally accepted paradigm. We thus meet with the paradigm paradox; where society must reach a sustainable harmony with an ethos of wellbeing, but, we cannot reach a Turquoise paradigm and we cannot give up the Modern market capitalist paradigm, especially when developing countries need a type of capitalist system to develop. So, how is this puzzle solved? Teal and Turquoise are needed as guides, even workhorses, to advance as deep an ethos as possible that suggests ways forward. As co-existing, whether overlapping or parallel, paradigm scenarios must agree on a g(G)lobal methodology of collective reconciliation and cooperation, yet still maintaining the ability to meet the needs of the respective consciousness of their particular paradigm stage. We are moving toward a society The IWM sees key paradigms acting as co-existing and overlapping (see page 17). of decentralization of specific Some of these are the Progressive pluralistic worldview stage and the Integral aspects of life conditions like Globalcentric worldview stage. In addition there are many emergent stories food, energy, etc., however, jockeying for our attention – which scenario do we follow? These emergent story many other aspects will remain paradigms deal with several crises like Climate Change, globalization, and other global – human rights, Modern paradigm dysfunctions head on, while factions of the persistent paradigm communications, computer, of power are in constant resistance to any change to “business as usual” besides information, science, medicine, incremental change, especially in its dysfunction of unsustainability, its culture of etc. Overlapping Paradigms must violence, and self-interest approach to life. However, the proponents of new move forward together. We must paradigm options will not be denied their say, and will engage their vision in some also develop the means to form, as Progressive groups like 350 and Occupy demonstrate, and will seek to resolve differences of opinion, curb the excesses that have brought on Climate Change, perpetual conflict, and cultural (meme) group conflict, many environmental problems by legal means, legislative means, education means, resolving and transforming our and grassroots means. By any peaceful, nonviolent means available to them, like differences peacefully and come for example an Eco-Occupy WASHDC 2020 social action. In general, modified to some consensus on how to paradigms adopting an ethos of wellbeing and Global cooperation indicate a shift to achieve wellbeing for all something like an eco-holistic era. This vision of a new era can be articulated and guided by a transformational Turquoise ethos, vision and participation, based on an including Earth’s ecosystems. Integral Paradigm analysis.

The Turquoise transformative Insight of ethos 6

From the Integral perspective and the IWM perspective paradigm change with an ethos of wellbeing for all, global cooperation, and ecological sustainability is a globalcentric perspective that emerges from the Turquoise level of consciousness and this cannot be overemphasized.

The Turquoise ethos, (graphic at left), is a high point of an evolving human global consciousness. Turquoise gains insight and gnosis by a non methodological approach, or, by an unknowable method of grasping “totem (Note is paraphrased or totality. However, that insight is then based on Integral Ecology book text.) applied to the current methodologies available; in this case the Integral method seems primary. It is a misunderstanding to say Turquoise needs no method or un-maps mapping, and such like platitudes. It’s importance cannot be overemphasized, but it demands that those with its awareness must engage pragmatically with the urgent social need now. Turquoise in one form of engagement can act as mediator between a |Logos level| gnosis and other meme group perspectives and co-paradigms that have varying degrees of self limitations; as hinted at in graphic below.

an Integral Paradigm Analysis

Green

The Integral Method with its Integral vision and Integral logic and synthesis can assist in the implementation of the Turquoise key emphatics from the Turquoise matrix on pages 6 & 7 which when looked at in-total, we begin to see the big picture of Paradigm change. From several existing and emergent paradigm scenarios how do we create a working synthesis of Integral Sustainability and Integral Peace, creating in fact an Integral paradigm based on the 8 major domains noted on page 10? This logic and synthesis is manifest, as mentioned, in the turquoise level of development. Big picture thinking, is right perspective of Paradigm change due to catastrophe and crisis as well as the knowledge of what is good, what is improving, and how to use the transforming insight of Turquoise thinking, and Teal whole systems thinking; (see graphic at left). This insight recognizes that all paradigm scenarios must modify in light of an ethos of wellbeing. This is Paradigm change for the cooperation of coexisting paradigms; sustainable model of living; and, for moving into the future together. Movement towards global consciousness and the implications of that, reflect a universal truth of evolutionary development, that wellbeing has the potential of becoming more and more emergent. An Integral Paradigm therefore needs the following as basic starting points;

Gnosis & compassion

Turquoise transformative vision Sustainability expert Professor Michael Ben-Eli says his sustainability principles; are “fundamentally systemic in nature, meaning, that each principle affects all the others and is affected by each in return... It implies that in seeking a transition to sustainability as a predominant planetary state, no piece-meal approach - emphasizing some aspects while neglecting others - is likely to yield effective, lasting results."

+Ethos of Wellbeing

+4 perspectives of wellbeing

+ true democracy

+ Ecological Economics

It has been obvious the Modern Paradigm is notorious for short term thinking. But why is Big Picture and whole systems thinking difficult for people, grassroots groups, and NGO’s? Take for example 350.org, Transition Towns, and Occupy; all quite poor in their big picture perspective. 350 has a Global benchmark with no plan to get there, presumably it’s just fine if the Modern Paradigm can do it. Transition Towns has a comprehensive planning model as part of their Transition model, however, few have engaged that part of the plan. And, Occupy seems to have been perplexed by their own inability to admit their own complexity; which is clearly a Postmodern agenda and methodology as taught by colleges and Universities since the mid-70’s. Why? Why has a Green alliance with Integral Teal achieved little headway? Nomtt has no answer, however, we accept the actions by the Green meme like the antiwar actions; the actions of the Cultural Creatives and the wiser Earth movement; and countless NGO’s as given, important, and ongoing. Progressives work on the national level of peace issues, sustainability issues, and rights issues; some on the regional level and some on the local level, while some work on the international level of sustainability. However, the progressive worldview tends to see solutions as primarily possible on the local/regional level due to their disillusionment with the present system (often dismissed as “empire” or corporate “business as usual”). This engages probably 30% of the populace in the USA – in perspective if not in direct action. The IWM recognizes these actions and proposes that the Teal meme communicate that these actions are part of a greater whole and that the Integrally informed need to do just that – communicate to the public this wider big picture perspective. As part of an articulation of the parts and the whole Teal must form and communicate a framework starting with Domains.

Integral Paradigm: Domains

9

From the Teal perspective Domains are the way we describe similar activities in the world and society, like the economy, ecosystems, health care, and education for example. In the Modern Orange paradigm when activities need special attention a domain or sector is designated and dealt with individually, and they simply co-accumulate. On the other hand at a Teal level all domains, as much as possible, are mapped and addressed wholistically, in whole systems thinking, as shown in the surrounding graphics. Uniquely, at Turquoise the understanding of what underlies domain designations is intuited in a holistic gnosis where a few domains are universal. Thus less mapping and methodology is needed which has been interpreted as Turquoise being beyond maps and methods. In general, to make domains manageable, especially for this IWM illustration, key domains are chosen as critical in describing a fairly complete synthesis of the suggested ethos.

Turquoise is key in a transformative vision, while Teal is key in a synthesis of systems; especially in developing an ecology of systems that is manageable, workable, and able to identify key domains that must work together from 30 plus domains identified by numerous sustainability groups. Domains; Nomtt’s methodology in choosing domains for achieving clarity and focus as co-emphatics; meaning, key points of emphasis working in harmony that lead to a holistic approach in explaining life. This is an important tool in overview or systems thinking because it guards against reductionism, where claims of truth or existence are reduced to just one domain like the physical data of gene theory. Or, say in political life where it might be said, a market based economic system is the only possible economic model for a free people. Similarly, it is a safeguard that implies no one political method suits all conditions, but also that no political method should be reduced to a single sound bite of explanation.

Recent big picture thinking goes back to Buckminster Fuller and his “world game, “and even Broadacre City by Frank Lloyd Wright in the 1950’s

Integral Paradigm: Key Integral Domains 10 In a Teal Ecology of Systems

Key Domains from a Domain Pool Key Integral Domains with a LR Ecology of Systems

Key Domains related to the Integral LL Cultural Quadrant

In a Domain of Economics example; if Modern capitalists had consciousness gain, would they then see the Turquoise ethos and vision? How would such an ethos change investment, ownership, and capital. How would capital be used; and resources, land, and technology? While a Postmodern Green-Teal ecological-economic system with an ethos of wellbeing might consider the following economic values; Wellbeing use-value Sustainable value Ecological Value Shared, commons, value Exchange, trade value

This suggests that these values can yield a sustainable cooperative society. With a steady state economy with less fetish, but with important things being done.

Having noted the overlapping crises and catastrophe concurrent to the Modern Paradigm it is clear that this paradigm must modify and coexist with other paradigms, all based in an ethos of wellbeing. How wellbeing is articulated is the subject of another issue of uvintegral; journal notes of :the nomadic think tank, but can be summed up by the Earth Charter as inclusive of, “a sustainable (and healthy) global society founded on respect for nature, universal human rights, economic justice, and a culture of peace. Towards this end, it is imperative that we, the peoples of Earth, declare our responsibility to one another, to the greater community of life, and to future generations.

Integral Paradigm: Ethos

11

Details of an Ethos of Wellbeing

An ethos of Wellbeing for all species and ecosystems is shown in an Integral (quadrant) inclusive matrix at right, and below in text. (shorthand here, with further elaborations in a future issue). 1. UL, Wellbeing of Individuals 2. LL, Wellbeing of Communities and of Nations. 3. UR, Wellbeing of species. 4. LR, Wellbeing of organizations, forms, systems, and institutions. Ethos can be an inflationary energy, a quick expanding force for emergence of paradigm shift. From the overview of domains the IWM highlights what it considers key starting points because, obviously, this short review cannot address all domains and combinations of same. This IWM wishes to emphasize a key vision of Global cooperation on the following page. To do that first illustrated are key emphatics; of ethos and crisis. The ethos of the IWM so oft mentioned here is an ethos of developing wellbeing for all humans, species, and ecosystems. Within one arising world there seems to be one emerging global crisis that mirrors the totality of what has gone wrong, and, that is the crisis of the global habitat. In addition to this key problem, an ethos of wellbeing recognizes the threat of the modern leviathan, as well as, many problems in the physical sphere and noosphere (see 6 key conflicts, p. 16), and in fact recognizes all problems (see multiple problems p. 23).

Key Crises and Key Ethos

Now we have this and we need to get to this...................

Ethos of Wellbeing

Global Cooperation 12 a Turquoise transformative insight

From the illustration of key problems along with the oft mentioned ethos a vision emerges of the necessity of Global Cooperation. To achieve Global Cooperation an Integral Paradigm approach is needed and key to that approach a review of necessary Integral Peace becomes self evident. Global cooperation and therefore Integral Peace are direct emergent emphatics from a transformative Turquoise insight of an encompassing unity; and, key in our, Nomtt’s, estimation. Integral Peace asks the question; how do we come together in a cooperative global society? One of the answers is a cultural awakening and societal consciousness gain. Turquoise has much to suggest here; a newly defined individual wisdom and ethos; a participatory group and global dialogue; and cooperative participation to restore earth’s ecosystems. We are entering a time of Global change including climate change, and many sustainability and wellbeing issues where Global Cooperation will be essential to secure wellbeing for all, as well as the wellbeing of Earth’s ecosystems. We must have Global cooperation which implies dialogue regarding common ground and mutual interest, a self-other understanding and empathy that leads to healthy worldviews eventually leading to peace. To achieve cooperation the importance of global thinking, global perspective, global knowledge, and global wisdom will be critical. For, if we presently have a lack of cooperation there is something fundamentally wrong with the existing paradigm. Global cooperation presupposes dialogue and some consensus on how we should proceed. It also presupposes that organizations have some avenue of approach to form alliances necessary for cooperation. Global Cooperation implies work on Peace, conflict resolution, conflict transformation, and communication between different cultures, races, and worldviews. Global Cooperation implies cooperation on sustainability issues, as well as effective ways to address extreme dysfunctions and corruptions of government. Global Cooperation is a way of peace. It can become more manifest in society when we strive for ecology in our social organizations, in our worldview interactions and in our deepening in global wisdom. Understanding Peace from an Integral perspective, Integral Peace, will be crucial over the next 10 to 15 years if we wish to truly mediate a transition from the existing Modern paradigm to an emergent Postmodern/Integral Globalcentric paradigm. An Integral Peace (Integral matrix graphic at left) understanding can help clarify how individuals deepen (UL) and behave (UR) through the various peace selves in various worldview stages; how cultural meme-groups (LL) interact, reconcile and transform crisis; and how social systems (LR) and organizational forms are necessary.

Thoreau said in his essay on “Civil Disobedience;” “Is a democracy, such as we know it, the last improvement possible in government? Is it not possible to have a step further in recognizing and organizing the rights of man?... Seen from a higher still, and the highest a state which bore this kind of fruit, would prepare the way for a still more perfect and glorious state.” His remarkable quote hints of stages of democracy beyond what we now know and experience as the Modern paradigm. For Integrally informed persons this is easily understood and understood as a necessity rather than a possibility. In fact, the 8 key Integral domains (noted on page 10) ultimately point to a peace worldview where Integral Law, Integral Politics, and Integral Sustainability are described from a Turquoise, even a |Logos| perspective; don’t they all suggest a peace worldview? Peace, ahimsa, compassion, and dharma is what we are evolving to. Integral Peace becomes a partner in the mediation of an emergent paradigm along with the other Integral disciplines. Now we have no governmental structures in place promoting peace as a wide scale endeavor both domestically and internationally. Institutions like the State Department and the Department of Defense are immersed in arcane, well-worn and habitual diplomatic and warrior paths. They follow tried and often failed policies based on political bias, carrot and stick approaches, or just plain geopolitical national interests and power struggles. They cannot be entrusted as peace building organizations. A proposed Department of Peace is not, therefore, an isolated and marginalized government form but participates with various worldview understandings to make those understandings healthier and saner. A peace paradigm is an Integral Turquoise paradigm and therefore not something we can cross the street to or walk across an unbuilt bridge to. It is something to be aware of and conscious of, though some have had an experience of and even a structure of consciousness of it. That awareness set in an Integral framework safeguards it as a player on today’s world stage. For consciousness of peace and peacemaking is not naivety in a violent world. Peace is a deep ethic, it is ahimsa, a structure of consciousness of the deep Logos, based not on a sudden revolution in human nature but on a gradual evolution in human institutions and cultural awakening. As seen in an Integral framework; the UL Quadrant Peace Self (see Integral Peace matrix graphic page 12) is an individual’s practice of peace as seen in the context of worldview stages, and provides an important picture of various attempts at peace making. For example the peace self at the Orange Modern stage is the

Integral Peace

13

a Turquoise transformative insight Modern Peace Diplomat; the Green stage peace worker is the Peace Activist; the Integral Teal peace self is the Peace-maker or Leader; and the Integral Turquoise Globalcentric peacemaker adept in Transformational Thinking, or Vision Logic is the Peace Self. A |Logos| peace self is typically a practitioner of Ahimsa, peace, and compassion towards all. The LL Peace Community refers to a community, meme-group, or a culture moving toward a culture of peace. How we interact, dialogue and get along; how we understand universal interconnectedness and universal eco-rights and human rights; and, how we respond to conflict. Were the deep understanding of community and individual depth fully included and tapped into by techniques different than a debate over conditions, an impasse can be overcome. In the LR Quadrant, Peace Forms as functioning democratic tools and global institutions will be required. Current global challenges will require stronger, not weaker, frameworks for cooperation. Paradigm change and the formation of new organizational forms is 2 track; First, as a parallel set of emergent cultural transformation concepts, organizational forms, and global wisdom introducing a wide range of peace and justice elements missing from the existing paradigm approach. Second, as ever more emergent from a subdominant position to a primary position in harmony with other paradigm scenarios. National Departments of Peace would stand as a voice of humanity with integrity and independence.

John Kennedy was beginning to make a peace-beginning; 1.“our primary long range interest… is general and complete disarmament… (and) a peace for all time.” ...to “build the new institutions of peace which would take the place of arms.” 2.“... and, is not peace, in the last analysis,… the right of future generations to a healthy existence?...where the weak are safe and the strong are just.”

Paradigm Change: an implementation Strategy 14, 15 Cultural Awakening in consciousness and action The transition to a post carbon society, with coexisting paradigms, may go through adjusting, growing, maturing, and adapting pains. Some paradigm scenarios include Sustainable planning, including groups of differing politics, economic brackets, and ages. To create a foundation of guiding principles this IWM endorses a “World Charter” (page 18) with an emphasis on diversity, inclusiveness, and wellbeing for all; including species and ecosystems. It is an approach specifically including disadvantaged persons, and the poor in all phases of planning. Transition is hard for anyone as individuals, but becomes easier and doable when all levels of society participate including individuals, community groups, the commercial sector, and the government sector. Paradigm change and social transition looks at community transition, its psychology, its conflicts, its stories, its opportunities, its inclusions, and its bliss. It is an inclusion of all-groups, as an integral part of the greater transition and Global dialogue. Transitioning within a diverse society means we need to develop methods that helps individuals and groups of people who have diverse perspectives and different worldviews to find some common ground, consensus, and where all can be heard. To heal our planet we must have a healthy psychology, healthy communities, and healthy worldviews. We must develop the means to resolve differences of opinion, and cultural group conflict by resolving and transforming our differences peacefully. Society is moving toward a maturing process or toward Transitioning of a diverse society means collapse, which would be a destructive path for far too many people. Can redefining ourselves and society. differing overlapping worldviews and paradigm scenario proposals coexist? 1. Lifestyle as conscious endeavor; Can we grasp and include multiple perspectives? We can, by learning to engage and new self defined, recognizing an inclusive global wisdom so communities can continue to gain psychological actions that benefit the greater Self health, grow and transition in spite of, and simultaneous to, the oncoming go beyond actions that benefit struggle and storm. The problems of modern leviathan awakening is suggested as a forum to explore some of the following: that need to be addressed (including “we buy e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g,” ) even as the modern paradigm coexists into the future with other paradigms 3. Consider the paradox of sustainable living. For example, research shows we can feed ourselves in our regional ecosystems but we are not Multi perspectives of individuals and meme groups willing to do the necessary labor. Therefore, suggested solutions to this are needed. Does a region hire 1. Understand the world charters-of-rights. labor in a non capitalist context by 2. Fears regarding water and food shortages, capitalist society, and exclusions based on class or race, will have to be dealt with, and so on.

A Cultural Awakening is an awakening from the underlying nexus of the corporate capitalist system and consumerism (we buy everything!); it Cultural is an awakening to what is happening Awakening in the Modern leviathan and the alternatives to that. A key sign of this awakening will be the endorsement and communication of an Ethos of Wellbeing for all humans, species and ecosystems; including wellbeing of the individual, Nations, and institutions.

Ethos

Turquoise

Individuals will need to tap into a global wisdom, groups will need to participate in global dialogue, behaviors will have to be more conscious, and our institutions will have to function within an ecology of systems (graphic upper right). The IWM calls for conflict resolution (see graphic page 22) and transformation through dialogue, however, this does not preclude insistent demonstrative communication like an Eco-Occupy 2020, if done nonviolently, in a sense of inclusion and intent to resolve conflicted perspectives and in endeavor to seek a way forward together. An Ethos of wellbeing presents a big task both to imbibe and communicate. It can only be done through multiple connections and alliances. It must be at once both sweeping and targeted to all paradigm groups so they can understand and also take reasonable action. Conscious actions have been going on now for some time amongst progressive and green groups as well as by many still committed to the Modern paradigm. For example; the graphic at right and lower right indicates necessary energy use reductions to achieve basic eco/sustainability goals and wellbeing for all. This scenario points out the current activity of 30% of the populace and indicates that 75% of the populace will eventually have to participate in a new ethos of wellbeing for all, within their paradigm ideology, if we are to achieve a sustainable society. This mix of participation is a viable guide to communication and action. In a post consumer consciousness we know fulfillment and happiness is in our relations, family, and wellbeing. Many problems and solutions require cultural changes led by the 30% pluralistic populace who realize they are also the leviathan in a capitalist-consumer alliance. To actually reach the next 45% of the population demonstrative communicative action, as noted before, may be necessary, as in an Eco-Occupy WashDC 2020 demonstration.

What the 30% must do to lead is commit to energy reductions, earth stewardship, local food, resolution of key conflicts, etc... The 30% must engage in non technological change including; consciousness gain, restoration of self, species and ecosystems; and lifestyle change. Because non technological evolution is also necessary for an ethos of wellbeing to emerge.

Paradigm Change: 17 Overlapping Paradigm Scenarios Without an understanding of overlapping paradigms, poor global cooperation will take place and limited achievements in dealing with the crises like Climate Change will result. Overlapping paradigm scenarios have a potential of coexistence, and unexpectedly, when in combination become more than their individual scenario stories. “Overlapping paradigms” are the persistent paradigms of the past and the emergent paradigms of our time. There are persistent paradigms of the Modern world (paradigm A in Figure p.24), there is the alternative paradigm of the Progressive modern worldview, and there are many emergent stories and proposals for new society paradigms. Professor J.M. deVries maps more than 30 of these (graphic upper right) from Business-as-Usual types to Fortress-World types to Great Transition and SustainableWorld types in relationship to each other. Paradigms scenarios are rarely fully developed and therefore reflect a partial worldview or parts of several worldviews and are thus overlapping. What emergent paradigm scenarios are trying to do, is not only to correct the dysfunction of the Modern worldview, but are often trying to suggest a new society, even ideal society, format or paradigm. Thus many have some naïve expectations and storylines of-the-future, as well as oversimplifying the complexities of the Modern dysfunctions; often substituting the dysfunction of a worldview for the whole worldview. So, some describe the existing paradigm as “Empire,” and therefore its implication of being a dysfunctional, rather than a healthy, worldview as the totality of the Modern

Paradigm Scenarios

worldview. The further implication is that this egregious dysfunction can only change by revolution. Thus the need for an Integral Paradigm analysis where scenarios are not just identified but integrated amongst co-existing paradigms. (graphics below). The clash between the residual paradigm and the emergent paradigm scenarios across various worldviews may be inevitable. The emergent paradigms are in a formative stage and need time to develop, to achieve maturity and consensus, as well as integration into society. Some say we don’t have the time. The IWM can only suggest some possible approaches to global cooperation, some of which must start soon. Global alliances, bridging, new statespersons, co-emphatics of Peace, an Ecology of systems, and Global Wisdom urgently need more elaboration and implementation. Some Paradigm scenarios are revisions to the Modern Paradigm. Some emergent Paradigm scenarios are Progressive-Modern. Not all emergent Paradigms are ProgressiveModern. Some emergent paradigm scenarios include but transcend the Progressive-Modern worldview. Some emergent Paradigm scenarios are from a |Logos| perspective.

Paradigm Change: World Charter as guide

18

To guide cooperative and overlapping paradigm’s a World Charter that articulates an ethos of wellbeing is necessary. Global cooperation means finding a balance between what other paradigm scenarios can compromise on and what they cannot compromise on with the Modern paradigm, like for example, nuclear weapons, or coal power plants. One way to establish what is negotiable and what isn’t, is if there are some global wellbeing and human rights charters that function as principled guides of a prospective World Charter. Inclusions into the makeup of a World Charter are;      

Earth Charter, next generation revisions and updated. World Commission - Consciousness Mission Statement, Ashok Gangadean Nobel Peace laureates peace charter. UN Declaration of Human Rights, USA Department of Peace legislation Other relevant charters. Charters proposed for this are the Earth Charter, the UN declaration of human rights, and the basic coemphatic hints of this paper, are a few among others. The Earth Charter is an important starting point but must be updated. Well intentioned language like, “Act with restraint and efficiency when using energy...” is conciliatory and ineffective language today. Better to revise and improve the document by 2020 such as “150 countries should agree on and enact a physical limit of 350ppm CO2ppm in atmosphere.” In addition, the language of legislation is even better like the DoP example at left. The more paradigm scenarios can cross and integrate multiple worldview structures through co-emphatics, global alliances, and cultural meme-group bridging the more possibility we have at a cooperative, peaceful, and sustainable world. Yet, foundational changes in our democracies will be needed, for example; how we vote, how politics are funded, who serves in government, who runs for government; how central banking and corporate economics are modified...

Legal example of legislation based on an ethos of Wellbeing from the proposed Department of Peace

The future paradigm will be a mix of overlapping paradigm’s with old and new influences; and which must move forward together.

Integral Standard Model

19

The methodology used for the IWM synthesis approach is the Integral Methodology assessing “all quadrants, all levels, all lines, all states, and all types (or AQAL),” which is a guide and framework for global inclusions. Two sets of inclusions used in this paper are the perspective domains of 1 st, 2nd, and 3rd person; designated here as I, We & Form perspectives (see lower right graphic); meaning the individual, the engagement with a group or collective of individuals, and the engagement with the organized forms of society. This is typically shown graphically in an Integral matrix of 4 quadrants as shown at right.

The 3 worldviews may have millions of personal variations, but large groups and social systems tend to follow patterns well documented in the Integral literature. One example of a big difference between the Modern meme-group and the Postmodern meme-group is that fairness and social justice is a norm on paper and in documents in the Modern paradigm, while they are the norm in practice for the Postmodern meme-group. I would add that they are the norm as a structure of consciousness of the Integral Globalcentric meme-group.

A revised Integral model includes 4 key Teal/Turquoise perspectives of an ethos of wellbeing which dovetails into the standard model framework and gains relevance by acting as impetus for worldview evolution or paradigm change. The role of the individual becomes aligned with global wisdom; the collective “we” must embrace dialogue and peace and all its subtexts; and the forms of society must evolve toward an ecology. The second set of inclusions in the IWM are the developmental stages of cultural Meme-Groups as expressed through their respective worldviews. Three worldviews have been noted in particular; the Modern worldview, the Postmodern worldview, and the Integral globalcentric worldview. Some reference has also been made to the |Logos| worldview. An example, below left, of lines of development show, in this case, a yellow line as the potential self, while the blue is our limited self, still so subject to the unconscious and irrational. Example below right is another expression of the key Integral perspective inclusions.

& Behaviors

Integral Self, Multiple Self(s) 20, 21 For the purposes of the IWM and the Nomtt’s effort to develop Integral tools, the key highlight to be emphasized regarding the Integral Self, is the identification of key self(s) in relationship to key Domains; then analyzed in the Integral matrix of a given altitude of development like Green Progressive, or Teal wholistic systems thinking as illustrated in the graphic at left and below, in a classic Integral view of stages and their respective color representations. Adult development is moving toward a more globalcentric and inclusive transformational synthesis; recognizing the partial truths of all worldviews, as well as their limitations and dysfunctions. This mature vision-thinking and awareness will eventually lead to new policies and organizations that will implement the vision of universal equity. To understand a complex world we must make the attempt to understand key features of the people, the pool of humanity, domains and systems of that world. New paradigm scenarios must show a nuanced approach in understanding this common pool of persons, humanity and species. The Integral method can help in describing key Integral self(s) like the eco self; the peace self; the philosophy self; the law self; the social self and the spiritual self. The eco self can be used as a starting template as developed in the book Integral Ecology; that can be revised depending upon the particular self being considerred. Other self(s) (which can be many) that can be considered depending on the applicable analysis are the; health and medical self (including genetic); economic self; sustainability self; arts, music and aesthetics self; self in family; ethical self; military self; or the digital self, and so on.

This graphic denotes an Integral matrix of many “self’s” in one stage (at a time) of development with focus on one domain like Economics for example; thus surrounded by designations of several key schools of economic thought from that stage. Each stage at left should be assessed in this light with their key schools.

The Integral method recognizes the self as having different worldview perspectives at each stage of development. And, when that stage of self focuses its perspective on key domains a further nuance of self’s-perspective is expressed. This page vignette of self looks at self in relation to domains in the effort to create Integral tools that can be used in applied Integral analysis. The specific worldview psychology, values, depth and practices of the self at specific stages of development are well documented in the Integral literature, and are not gone into, in any depth, on this page. The Integral World Model attempts to make incremental explorations into these aspects beginning with some comments on multiple self(s). Shown in the graphic at right are a few key Domains, in relation to similar self’s. Looking from a Green Progressive stage you have a green eco-economy working for sustainability and wellbeing, developing systems and institutions of peace and cooperation. And so on for other domains in relation to selected key self’s. Naming the different self(s) should be flexible and appropriate to each domain consideration. For example; the ecological self in the Ecological Domain at the Green stage is “eco-radical” according to the book Integral Ecology. However, that nomenclature becomes problematic when applied to the Government Domain; becoming “government radical.” More appropriate might be “government progressive.”

Cultural Meme Groups 22

Ecological Economics Domain

Integral others, the complex “we” “We:” Together in crisis; confusion in post crisis; in fear, reaction, in pre-crisis. “We” in conflicted perspective can be un-reconciled to point of conflict and even war. The above graphic shows the self with other selves of a worldview in relationship to other selves in their worldview seeking cooperation and compatibility in a Domain.

Meme types refer to cultural groups with their own identity, values, ethos, and worldviews. Ideally Meme groups and their worldviews participate in global dialogue in a dialectical collaboration of the folding and refolding of what works for and serves an ethos of wellbeing and ultimately in a synthesis of a duration-of-good. All worldviews with their respective ethics need to be a part of the dialogue and solution. Sensitive to other cultural meme groups and their typological differences; like for example the Global South, and the voiceless billions excluded from the world stage need also be included and have a voice. Cultural group inclusions noted below are the developmental stages of cultural Meme-Groups as expressed through their respective worldviews. For example the Green Progressive groups, of sustainability and human rights, want the Orange Modern central powers to live with the same integrity they strive for, and they will demand this integrity. It is up to Modern nations to bring uncooperative nations into some modicum of cooperative alliance, but this will take global wisdom, of which the Modern meme will have to rely on the Integral globalcentric groups for help and leadership. Taken together they give hints of important inclusions for a potential new paradigm that reflects a new consciousness. To shift paradigm consciousness that will foster global cooperation and harmony among the many factions to global cooperation both the Modern and Progressivemodern worldviews must undergo a maturing process that will allow for coexistence with each other as well as with the worldview structure that is Globalcentric vision-logic. Only when coexistent harmony between differing worldviews is underway, can global cooperation and therefore peace and a sustainable society find success.

Ecology of Systems; Series 150

An ecology of systems is a little different than a synthesis of systems. It is a more alive interaction of Domains as social holons in a unifying ethos; like a natural ecology, flexible and adaptable, where domains are addressed both manageably and within an attuned chaos. To achieve manageability the IWM and Nomtt select 8 Integral Domains that must work together for a sustainable, peaceful society. Other Domains are present but subdominant. The eventual and necessary attunement and assessment of the spectrum of problems, solutions, and countries for sustainable-societies-in-perpetuity emerges from tool use like this, implemented in the real world. This spectrum of problems, solutions, and countries; 150 Crises; 150 Solutions ; and 150 Countries, is what lies before us. The key to Integral solutions is Integral globalcentric people and meme groups of compassion and gnosis, and Integral institutions in alignment with an ethos of wellbeing yielding a global cooperation based zone-of-harmony where all move forward in time cooperatively.

Global Alliances:

24

For Paradigm Scenario cooperation Can we create a McKibben “global social movement” to bring about change through mobilizing the Green Progressive meme in leading the way in demonstrative communicating conflict transformation based in an ethos of wellbeing?

Scenario A; Paradigm conflict even chaos

An Ethos of wellbeing presents a big task both to imbibe and communicate. It can only be done through multiple connections and alliances. It must be at once both sweeping and targeted. The IWM suggests the recognition that there will be, and must be many global alliances between the various scenarios and all the nested groupings from local groups on through global alliances. How do we move toward global cooperation from an unhealthy paradigm to a transforming pluralism?

Scenario B; Stages of emergence to D by cooperation and consciousness raising

To move from the Modern (Leviathan) Paradigm A to an Integral Paradigm of co-existing paradigms D can be by way of cooperation B or antagonism C.

Scenario C; steps to D through activism (Eco-Occupy WashDC 2020)

Scenario D; Paradigm Cooperation

The IWM suggests that any future story of the overlapping paradigm scenarios is one of an ecosystem of various alliances that must work together. There will be Transition Towns and the relocalization movement, also Alliances of Cities and Municipalities, Alliances of National Departments of Peace, and Green Cities, Wilderness groups, Cultural Meme-Group alliances, and Alliances to stop Climate Change. There will also be the Modern central government Nation-State continuation with their fossil fuel/growth and corporate economy model. However, new International alliances, National Regional Alliances like the EU Alliance and the South American Alliance, New Sovereignty and Sustainability group alliances, will all become stakeholders in developing a better world and will insist the Modern paradigm join the endeavor, though, a global period of demonstrative communication may be necessary to actually reach the majority population, as in an EcoOccupy WashDC 2020 demonstration. The Modern paradigm will not be allowed to make global treaties that favor one region or the elite and powerful, they have lost the credibility to do that. It is an urgently needed Ecology of Systems in conjunction with global wisdom that will be able to foster cooperation amongst these many factions, and that will enable all of them to survive in some sort of working harmony. Graphic at left points to ever widening circles of alliances of the nested social holons from local groups to global groups. Alliances of Cities and Municipalities and the Global Alliance for Departments of Peace can play particularly helpful roles in creating dialogue and implementation bridging. Each group is looking for fulfillment, the pursuit of happiness, a good life and education and health for their children and their many extended generations of children, but in harmony with other groups, not hostile or authoritarian to other groups. Each group in an ecosystem is “looking for a niche for itself that is beneficial to itself and the extended community,” (Thomas Berry). Only if we move into the future together, cooperatively and with an ethos of wellbeing, can we hope for harmony.
