by Janice Marie Wilson Las Vegas is a city of passion, seduction, sensuality, and allure. Nikki Gray 23, could be their new billboard. Like Las Vegas, Nikki exudes the sexual magnetism that entices everyone to want more. Her soft voice is young and innocent. Her photo’s are sexy and provocative. But in real life, Nikki is intelligent, dedicated, and passionate. She loves bad boys, sexy lingerie, chicken fingers, beer, Louis Vuitton, modeling and most importantly; her family. continued on page 27

She just finished shooting her latest film here in Vegas with Soprano’s star Frank Vincent, and Las Vegas headliner Holly Madison. This sexy horror, mobster film, Resurrection (Wrath of Seduction) is a story about an older and younger priest that get kidnapped by a pack of she-devils. Nikki is the lead devil, Prosperine. It’s a seduction of evil over good with the twist that a mob boss, (Frank Vincent) uses his underworld connections to “take care” of the evil spirits. Nikki is unassuming about her new found fame in the modeling and movie worlds. “I love pretending to be someone else. The long hours trying to “suck it up” for modeling jobs is strenuous but I love it. Doing the same scene more than twenty-five times over for the movies is very physical and demanding but I can’t get enough.” She confesses. Even going to an audition doesn’t give her an anxious moment. She told me she just doesn’t worry about much. “There’s always another opportunity out there, if it’s not acting or modeling I’ve got my real estate license,” continued on page 28

biggest supporter. As a youngster, she was a competitive gymnast. She wishes she had never quit but her coaches pushed her too hard and the sport was no longer fun. She got straight A’s in junior high but in high school she developed a wild streak. She was a fast and furious track star for short distances. But “party girl” was her real game. She was naturally as skinny as a tooth pick at 5'7", with a bubble butt in high school. She had a natural confidence that exuded in her classes but constantly worried about the boys. She told me that she and her older sister used to watch music videos all day. Sometimes they even ditched school to do it. It was during those ditch days that she developed her passion for modeling and acting. Her favorite subjects were History and Political Science. In fact, she got into such heated discussions with her teachers that politics (as well as her current love affairs) are never broached in an interview. Secrecy is seductive. continued on page 35

Nikki Gray She did share with me that she is attracted to the “bad boys.” She thinks they’re more manly and protective. She doesn’t like playing games and loves a man that is sexy and manly. Nikki lusts for sexy lingerie. She covets the sexy, sleek, black lingerie with the retro vibes and black lace. So if you want to fill her black mesh stockings under her mistletoe, her all time favorite look is Agent Provocateur. Everything about Nikki glistens with sensual pleasures that are honest and real. She loves being sexy! Even though she attests to being a homebody, she can be found at some of the new LA night spots and is a little cantankerous that they close at 2:00 am. She’s the perfect blend of a “bad boy’s” need for a naughty, nice girl. That’s probably why she’s scheduled to be part of the fabulous artwork that artist Marcus Saurez is doing for the Las Vegas Mob Experience. Marcus is famed for doing work with David La Chappelle, Pam Anderson, and other huge stars. The Las Vegas Mob Experience is expected expose the raw truth about the mob that once ran this town. Tales of organized crime have always been looked upon with fascination. Although its existence is worldwide, never has the industry been followed more closely than here in Las Vegas. Opening December 2010 at the Tropicana,

tion unlike any other. In addition to shocking artifacts, the museum uses the latest in interactive entertainment technology. The special effects set a new standard for attractions worldwide. Through first person accounts, which are offered by apparitions of famed gangsters themselves, you’ll be fully exposed to the world of organized crime. Make your way through a theatrical, interactive setting that delivers intrigue, mystery and suspense. You’ll even have the opportunity to meet actual family members of those highlighted throughout the attraction. The Las Vegas Mob Exhibition neither glorifies nor vilifies the mob, but simply presents a historically accurate view. At the end of your journey, you decide if this is a group of ruthless gangsters or ordinary individuals who lived extraordinary lives. Nikki is loving the experience of “playing her part” with these iconic “bad boys.” She’s also is the featured model/girlfriend of Justin Timberlake in the film Social Network starring Justin Timberlake and directed by David Fincher. Her list of credits include Nikki Gray is the Queen of Motor Sports. She graced the cover of Hot Rod Magazine. She is the billboard, poster girl, and spokes-model for Monster Energy Drink. Nikki has appeared across America at NHRA Drag Racing events signing her posters for her fans who are addicted to speed. The need for speed is Nikki Gray’s signature.

Sheen. True to form, Charlie had his manager ask if she would call him. Although, Nikki thought Charlie and the crew were wonderful, I guess Charlie didn’t fit her criteria of “bad boy.” She declined the invite. Nikki’s idols are Angelina Jolie, Madonna, Rachel Welch, and Jenny McCarthy. She loves Angelina for her attitude, Madonna for her savvy, Rachel Welch for her sexiness, and Jenny because she’s not afraid to look sexy and funny. I think Nikki has out grown her worry about boys as she’s growing into her beauty and confidence as a woman and successful celebrity. She’s very rarely anxious or sad and when she is, she snaps out of it quickly by driving down the Pacific Coast freeway or home to visit her family. She listens to sad country songs in her black Hummer, while placing an order at Taco Bell. She’ll probably even watch a funny movie. She has mastered the art of the “naughty girl making life nice.” Or is it the “nice girl learning how to be naughty?” Watch her blog, videos and next appearances, and let me know what you think! Is she sensual, racy, risqué, flirtatious, erotic, steamy, suggestive or just the “nice” girl next door? For more information On Nikki Gray Contact: Victoria Talbot Hype Inc. Crazy Horse Reigns Supreme at the MGM Grand Art comes alive in this Paris revue by Bobbie Katz

The world-famous Crazy Horse has been a glimmering nightspot on the Paris landscape since 1951. Now in its first permanent home in the United States, for the last nine years it has been shedding new light on the Las Vegas entertainment scene. Like art in a living picture, MGM Grand’s Crazy Horse Paris, which debuted direct from Paris at the hotel in June 2001 as La Femme, celebrates beautiful women, dressing them in rich hues and textured lighting designs. True to the intent of its creator, Alain Bernardin, which was to celebrate the “L’Art du Nu” (artistry of the nude), the show has achieved the rare position of being the bipolar epitome of elegance and eroticism. It is truly a Horse of a different color, a French cultural phenomenon. “The show relies on raw talent and beauty and the little technical secrets identifiable to Crazy Horse,” says Sally Dewhurst, marketing manager for the Las Vegas production. “It strives to go with the times. One of the new numbers in Paris, for example, is called La Crise, which refers to the global crisis. The majority of the girls go back and forth between Paris and Las Vegas every six months and the creative team for the show comes to Vegas from Paris all the time. That helps to keep the show fresh and alive. All the girls understand French – that is the language spoken backstage. “There are 11 numbers in the show and while certain classics remain, such as the Queen’s Guard opening number, God Bless Our Bareskin, and the closing number, You Turn Me On, the others are always changing,” she continues. “The variety acts change every couple of years. No two shows are alike – numbers are rotated and the soloists change every night. Plus, we have instituted guest stars,

such as Pamela Anderson, Carmen Electra, Dita Von Tease, Princess Savoy, and Claire Sinclair. Crazy Horse always tries to take people to a different place – it’s like walking into a beautiful little jewelry box. We want people to feel that they are in an environment where they can fantasize about their lives. The show leaves more to the imagination than to the eye.” All 14 dancers in Crazy Horse Paris are members of the original Paris dance troupe, except for the first-ever American dancer, Kristal D’Arc, who entered the show two years ago. Classically trained in ballet, they perfectly integrate the sensuous choreography of their performance with the lighting, creating a mesmerizing effect and capturing www.RisqueLVmag.com

Bernardin’s true genius – the ability to reinvent the female form as human art. The production is exactly the same as the one currently playing on Paris’ fashionable Avenue George V. that has drawn a long list of international celebrities, from President John F. Kennedy to Salvador Dali, Madonna, Warren Beatty, Sophia Loren, Eric Clapton, Elizabeth Taylor, Sting, and Elvis Presley, over the last 59 years. In 2005, Sophie Bernardin and her two brothers, who had inherited the reins of Crazy Horse after their father’s death, sold the entire company to Belgian businessman Philippe Lhomme and a group of investors. continued on page 40

Crazy Horse continued from page 39

But Bernardin’s vision remains intact. Numbers are planned around a specific girl. No body surgery is allowed and the girls have to be between 1 meter 65 (5'5") and 1 meter 72 (5'5-¾") tall. Each one wears a 34B bra and the distance between the top of each girl’s navel and the top of her pubic bone has to be 18 centimeters. Firmness and balance in the body is looked for as well as whether a girl can easily learn the routines and how she carries herself and moves. It can take between two and three months of rehearsing every day to adapt a girl and she does not go on stage until she is ready. The unmistakable trademark of the Crazy Horse girls is the “cambre du corps,” the curve of the body. The back is deeply arched to exaggerate a woman’s curves and, to complete this youthful image, the chest is pushed forward and out and the shoulders back, magnifying the arcs of the body seen from any angle.

40

Production-wise, Bernardin developed a style built on an intimate complicity between the dancer and spectator. In the 1960s, he moved away from the individual towards the collective and instituted numbers whereby his figures became what he called “living pictures,” using one or more dancers. Each number became an individual show with its own choreography, set and lighting, presented in a proscenium called a “letterbox,” which is like a panorama. It has been said that the Crazy Horse is to a strip show what a chamber ensemble is to a punk rock band. In truth, each number is presented in almost a dreamlike sequence and each tells a little story. The girls act out scenes to audiotapes and original music is now accompanied by more subtle lighting effects. Acting is a big part of the show, with the use of the face and eyes as important as the use of the body. When Bernardin, an amateur artist and antiques dealer, founded Crazy Horse Paris more than five decades ago, he was fascinated by two seemingly disparate notions – the American Western movie genre, with its Holiday 2010

mythological saloons and historic legends, and the beauty of the female form. His desire was to create something more striking than the traditional American striptease and yet acceptable to a wide audience. He experimented with strobe-like effects and other innovations. Some of his dancers became legends in their own right, and even today there are fond memories of Dada d’Hambourg and Rita Renoir. “The Crazy Horse is the best in the world at what it does,” Sophie Bernardin once told me. “It is the best show of its kind. The company is very selective in what it does. Nothing is done haphazardly; everything is set up and choreographed. The show knows how to present the girls and make them look classy and elegant. There are also two variety acts and humor in the show; audiences laugh when they watch it. There are a million little details that make the show what it is. No one can copy it because they won’t have all the ingredients – it’s like a recipe. It has become a classic.” One with a unique European flavor all of its own.

‘Tis The Season Beauty Tips for Your Holiday Season by Jenny Burke With the season of soirees upon us, the ultimate look is needed to stand out among the crowd of little black dresses. Leading cosmetic dermatologist, Dr. Jason Michaels of Aspire Cosmetic Med Center is offering a few simple steps, to get you ready for the family holiday card photo, office party, family reunion, or New Year’s Eve bash. Below are tips to get the face and skin looking refreshed for the year-end holiday festivities! Three months before the event • Focus on the overall color of your skin. Laser treatments can address uneven skin tones and correct unsightly, obvious facial blood vessels, cheek redness, brown spots or other skin discolorations. • Latisse is FDA approved to make your eyelashes look longer, thicker and darker in less than three months. Give those eyelashes a boost by starting treatment now. Two months prior to the event • Address volume loss that is a natural part of the aging process. It’s volume loss, not tiredness, creating those dark circles under your eyes in the majority of clients. This is very treatable and can literally remove the darkness in a matter of minutes. Fillers can replace the volume. • Fillers, Botox, and Dysport typically take a few weeks to get settled and offset fine lines and wrinkles. Some clients also have slight bruising from these injectables as well, so it’s important to have these treatments done prior to an event month. If you want your fuller, more Mistletoeready lips, it’s important to treat a few weeks out. Just before the event • Brighten and exfoliate your skin for a flawless, photography-ready face. Light chemical peels or vitamin-infused microdermabrasion treatments bring back the skin’s natural glow. Also, if a last minute blemish appears, seek a dermatologist who can inject the affected area with medicine to give you that clear complexion. Dr. Jason Michaels

Legends, Lore, and Long Runs And, now, on with the shows Here’s some news about an event that’s guaranteed to be a real “thriller.” Tickets have gone on sale for the collaboration of the Estate of Michael Jackson and Cirque du Soleil. The two entities announced the official international launch of Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour, which will stop in Las Vegas December 3-11, 2011 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. Written and directed by Jamie King, considered the leading concert director in pop music today, the production will combine the music and choreography of “the King of Pop” with Cirque’s unique touch and creativity, resulting in a unique glimpse into the heart, spirit, and passion of the artist who transformed global pop culture forever. The Immortal World Tour will take place in a fantastical realm where audiences will discover Michael’s inspirational Giving Tree— the wellspring of his creativity—as the secrets of his inner world are unlocked, including his love of music and dance, fairy tale and magic, and the fragile beauty of nature.

r

In the realm of living music icons, the artist who came to prominence back on January 13, 1967 with the mega-hit song Release Me, has finally been RELEASED. That’s the name of international superstar Engelbert Humperdinck’s new commercial CD, which was released in Australia on October 29th and offers a bevy of new contemporary songs by top songwriters as well as a new twist on some of the singer’s classic hits. Recorded on three continents, the CD was produced by award-winning producer Paul

Wiltshire (Human Nature, Shannon Noll, The Backstreet Boys, Delta Goodrem, Vanessa Amorosi and others). Two days before his CD’s release, the dynamic and perennially youthful Engelbert, who keeps himself current and consistently garners new generations of fans, received the Music Legend Award from the American Society of Young Musicians (ASYM) at a star-studded posh event at the Luxe Hotel in Bel Air, California. Past recipients of the award include Madonna, Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder and Brian Wilson. Long ago dubbed the “King of Romance,” Engelbert will be back in Las Vegas in February over Valentine’s Day weekend.

r

It seems that “Bo Peep” keeps garnering more sheep and for that reason, PEEPSHOW star Holly Madison has extended her run in the sexy show at Planet Hollywood through the end of 2011. Madison, who was called “the hottest thing in Las Vegas” by CNBC, plays a modern woman who discovers her sexuality. Another one of the Strip’s “hot” topless revues, FANTASY at the Luxor, has extended its contract through 2011. The show, created and produced by Anita Mann, is celebrating its 11th successful year at the hotel. Its new lead singer, fiery beauty Lorena Peril, adds an exciting element to the long-running production with her personality and powerhouse vocals.

The popular comedian shines in his own room at Palace Station by Bobbie Katz

Did you hear the one about the showbizloving guy who opened the refrigerator door and started doing standup when the light went on? He actually turned out to be one of the “big cheeses” of comedy. For comedian Louie Anderson, who calls his humor observational and family-based, admittedly, food for thought for his act can come from anywhere – even the kitchen. Luckily, it comes easily to him since he writes new material every week now that he is Las Vegas’ newest resident headliner. continued on page 48

“I’m blessed because I just think funny,” Anderson, who performs in his own selfnamed showroom at Palace Station five nights a week, 40 weeks a year, says. “I opened the refrigerator and saw two big wheels of cheese that someone must have given me and were put in there. Immediately, a joke came into my mind. I thought, ‘I’ll have two more wheels on me if I eat these – and I don’t need another car.’ “This is a way I get into a bit,” he adds. “I start out with, ‘I quit drinking coffee and started drinking tea. People heard about it and started bringing me tea. Whether I like it or not, I have so much tea that I’m thinking of opening a store. I’m now going to switch from tea to diamonds.’” While anything can spark a joke, Anderson focuses on the everyman’s struggle that we all have to face everyday and notes that he has always come from a loving place with his material. He displays his empathy for his fellow human beings, believing that a fun-spirited joke goes a lot further than a mean-spirited one. “I would run into people all the time who were sourpusses,” Anderson admits. “I used to think that I should try and cheer them up. Now I just use them as material. The big deals in life are losing people you love or someone you care about getting hurt or sick. And there are people out there everyday risking their lives for our freedom. So many of my friends and family are gone – you just never

48

know. I’ve learned not to be so worried about self and that what matters is to enjoy the day we have. We have little control over life anyway. And the more gratitude I have, the better human being I perform as. “I have really good friends,” he continues. “And I’m very spiritual. I believe that the people I’ve lost are always close around me. When people come to the show that have the same names as my parents or the siblings I’ve lost, I believe that it’s a special hello from them. I’ve made peace with life; we’re all works in progress. The more we can do for others is the measure of our own lives. Rodney Dangerfield said it best –‘it is what it is.’” Anderson, who originally hails from St. Paul, Minnesota, came from a poor family of 11 siblings that spent time on welfare when he was growing up. He says that his parents and brothers and sisters were all very funny people and that people would laugh when he talked, even though he was trying not to be funny. As for whether or not comics are more introspective than other people, he claims that one can choose how far to take the introspection. The most important thing to him, Anderson says, is when he is up on stage and he looks out into the audience and sees people wiping a tear from their eye because they’re laughing so hard. That’s when he knows that they are free and devoid of pain and are only experiencing joy. As for his own life, the comedian makes his home in Las Vegas now and says that there is no place like it. He is having fun being in Holiday 2010

his own theater and feels that he can be the resident headliner at Palace Station for a long time if he chooses to. “I really enjoy performing and I want to make that room a lot of comedy,” Anderson notes. “I’d like to see a great comedy theater in town in which some of my L.A. friends would come in and perform a show after mine. There are so many great comics out there. I’d like to bring the feeling of real theater back.” When it comes to his plans for the future, Anderson says that perhaps in five years, he’ll transition from performing comedy into teaching comedy. In October, he held a twoday seminar at Palace Station called Standup Boot Camp with comedian Kyle Cease, who won the standup competition on Comedy Central. Although over 400 people have attended the seminar in other places, it was the first time it was held in Las Vegas. An intensive workshop, Anderson and Cease taught attendees about comedy skills, writing, making a plan and marketing it, stagefright, and the like. They even offered a segment in improving comedy in the workplace for corporate folks. “I never worry anymore if I’m going to be funny,” Anderson cajoles. “I’ve been doing comedy for 31 years – and I’ve only been funny for 20.” Anderson says he is also trying to be healthier physically and is hoping that the pounds will start melting off. One thing is for certain –you won’t find anyone who is more adept at taking the weight of the world off his audiences’ shoulders. It’s Louie lite all the way.

The Man Behind The Design by Beti Kristof

Anthony Scirpoli, former strong safety for the University of Massachusetts football team, stepped out of his conventional Boston background and family construction business and stepped into the upbeat stimulating lifestyle of south Florida. A talented entrepreneur, Anthony co-designed a trend setting fashion clothing line called DrumBums Global with Indy-Rock and Hip Hop “Eternity”

music producer, Sharkey.

For Information see “Where To Buy,” page 114

Anthony realized his gift to combine his entrepreneur spirit and background with his natural affinity for aesthetic design. continued on page 58

Circa Trova continued from page 57

“One time I was in New York, looking for jewelry. I was looking for a vision I had of a ring around a cross. There was no meaning behind it at the time, it was just a visual. I searched and found none in New York, so I decided to make one on my own. It took Courage, to say I should try. Then actually do it.” Aware that jewelry in general had no meaning to it, Anthony realized that his first ring-cross design took Courage on his part to design. Anthony was raised Catholic, yet he feels strongly that it is more than religion that connects us as human beings to a spirituality. The universal energies are connected through each person and people have an uncanny way of connecting to the crosses that I have created by the intention of the piece itself. “I am not afraid to feel and try different things, if I like it; I think other people will too!” That was certainly the case. Walking through an airport, Anthony was stopped and asked about the cross-ring chain he wore. At a restaurant, a man insisted he buy the pendant right off his neck.

“Persistence”

58

“I couldn’t believe it but the guy was serious, so I took it off and sold it to him!” Anthony designed 10 pieces right after that. He launched Cerca Trova. (Loosely translated means, search and you shall find.) In essence, he found a desire to place meaning to each of his designs and in doing so, resurrect the belief system that civilizations were built on, inspiring virtues; Loyalty, Courage, Perseverance, Hope, Strength. In Los Angeles, during a promotion for Cerca Trova, Anthony held up a few crosses in his hand and asked a young woman to pick one. She picks up the cross which was “Faith.” She actually surprised herself, and showed Anthony the word “Faith” indelibly etched on her skin as a tattoo. A similar experience happened at another show. A lady “Survivor” walked straight over, picked up one of the pendants and put it on her neck. She said, she felt her husband in the piece. “I know he wants this for me, and it reminds me of him.” Her husband died in 911 and again it was the “Faith” cross-ring pendant that she connected to in his memory. “I believe that in the act of giving, you are receiving in return, that which you gave.” Years ago when Anthony was quite young, his uncle gave him a watch. The watch had special meaning to Anthony; it gave him strength and courage because he had admired his uncle so much. Later in life, his uncle died from cancer and Anthony never forgot the lesson of the gift of giving and what it meant to him. “I wanted the Cerca Trova crossrings to be affordable and something that could be handed down to future generations.” With the economy the way it is, Anthony Scirpoli’s intention is that each cross-ring pendant be affordable as well as meaningful to the beholder. He believes that to connect with others, (through his jewelry) and make a difference is why we are on this planet in the first place. Holiday 2010

“I loved Aerosmith and their music. They were the first group I listened to as a kid.” Steven Tyler also grew up in New England and Anthony was thrilled that he wore one of his cross-ring designs during his tour. I am so pleased to find cross-rings worn by many celebrities, athletes and musicians.” Cerco Trova offers modern aesthetic design of the cross-rings coupled with oldworld inspiration to make a statement reinstating a sense of value in today’s lifestyle and an opportunity to encourage men (and women) to participate in a resurgence of individual expression and to return to a more classic style of dressing and living. “I believe you become who you have the courage to step out as.” In his early 20s, Anthony was involved mentoring troubled “at risk” youths. He wanted to help them feel fulfilled with something creative that they could do. It was really great for them and Anthony was very happy to be able to make a difference in their lives bringing hope and help in achieving individual fulfillment. “I had them writing poetry, narratives, and drawing. The drawings were inspired by; To Pac, hip hop, and rock and roll styles of music.” Cerca Trova has become involved with both Breast Cancer Awareness organizations and Autism charities. Anthony has created individual cross-ring pendants with inspirational meanings for these charities specifically. It seems Anthony connects to everything he does. Needless to say, both charities are close to Anthony Scirpoli on a deeply personal level. “Good, bad or indifferent, Cerca Trova designs elicit a reaction. That part is good, because if I did not have courage to step out and create this line none of this would have happened.” Cerca Trova’s Roman inspired cross-ring chains, leather cuffs and belts are handmade and one of a kind. The stainless steel pieces are low maintenance, retaining their luster eternally, making them the ideal emblem of meaning and memory. Cerca Trova Jewelry can be found at in Henderson, Harley Davidson, and Vegas Royalty in Planet Hollywood on the Strip. Look for new designs added to collection. www.Cercatrovafashion.com For Information see “Where To Buy,” page 114

A Walk on the Wild Side Rick Thomas lets the cats out of the bag by Bobbie Katz

As I drove up to the home of Rick Thomas, I felt truly excited – in fact, I couldn’t have been more ready to take the tiger by the “tale.” Not only is Thomas one of the most talented illusionists in the business, but for the past 20 years, he has had a story to tell about raising a bevy of magnificent exotic felines and exhibiting them in his acclaimed show, The Magic and Tigers of Rick Thomas, now at the Sahara. Oh, they may work for food and know how to claw their way to the top, but being one of the “cool cats” of the Las Vegas Strip is serious business, as I was about to find out. Thomas answered the door to his beautiful self-designed house where he lives with his wife, five children, six tigers, five macaws, four cockatoos, twenty doves, and a domestic cat named Kitty (who, like the doves and a few of the other birds, is also in his show). “Multiply by 1,000 times what your cat does and you’ll have a tiger,” Thomas told me as he introduced me to one-year-old Kitty and then took me into the kitchen so that he could prepare the food for the tigers (each one eats 10-15 pounds of raw meat, chicken, and turkey a day; they’re fed once a day). “A cat is just a tiger, only smaller. You can’t figure out a feline. They love you as much as they want to love you. They will come to greet you, then they want to be left alone. They want to be taken care of when they want to be taken care of.” Thomas has raised thirteen tigers from birth over the last two decades and currently has four of his six in his show. He began telling me his story by dismissing some of the myths that so many of us have heard about exotics – and believed. “White tigers are not endangered and therefore are not on any list,” Thomas begins, as I watch him take pounds of meat out of one of his two huge freezers. “That’s because white tigers are manmade. They are not in the wild and have never been in the wild. All tigers are half white – they’re all white on the bottom. But what happened was that back in the 60s, there was a tiger found in the wild that had a lot of white and it was captured and bred by the Prince of India. It was bred for seven years – during which time all that was produced were orange Bengals – until they finally figured it out. The animal was finally inbred with its daughter and the first pure white tiger was produced. continued on page 66

Rick Thomas continued from page 65

“There are only three types of tigers,” he adds. “There are the Bengal, Sumatran, and Siberian tigers. All of mine, orange or white, are Bengal. There are only 1,000 tigers left in the wild – about 600 Bengal, also called Indian; 400 Siberian, and roughly 10 Sumatran. In 1900, there were 160,000 Bengal tigers in the wild. Man is the tigers’ worst enemy – they are worth more dead than alive because their parts are worth a lot of money. In some countries, tiger parts are considered magical.” Thomas also explains that there are currently 5,000 tigers in captivity in the U.S. (White aside, they are an endangered species.) Of that number, he says, only 6 percent are in zoos while the other 94 percent are taken care of by people who truly love

66

these animals, like himself. Thomas notes that there is no government subsidy for their care, even though one needs to get permission and guidelines from the USDA for obtaining and raising the exotics. Thomas has an exhibitor’s permit from the government and is actually required to display the animals for the purpose of educating the public about conservation. After some more conversation, it’s time for me to meet Thomas’ feline family. As we walk out his back door, I’m greeted by the sight of an aviary and a beautiful pool surrounded by rocks, in which Thomas swims with the tigers (one at a time, unless they are cubs.) It is all part of Phase 1 of the huge compound, currently a 10,000-square-foot area where the tigers, weighing from 350-500 pounds, are resting in individual, spacious chain-link enclosures. Thomas is getting ready to build Phase 2 to give the tigers even more space to romp.

HOliday 2010

First, I meet Samson, a beautiful 15-yearold white tiger now retired from show business (tigers generally live 15-20 years.) The magnificent creature, sleeping contentedly on his side, rolls over on his back like a kitten when Thomas gently nudges him to wake him up to say hello. The other tigers are 6-year-old Mercury, 7-year-old Kaos, 9-year-old Max, (who is lying in his “bathtub” filled with water,) 9-year-old Rocky, and 8-year-old Star, the only female. They are all beautiful, curious creatures and being that close to them – even though fencing separates us – couldn’t be more of a thrill. Thomas reveals that each of the cats has his or her distinct personality. “Rocky is like Scar from The Lion King,” he smiles. “Scar was the evil one who killed his own brother. Max, who is Rocky’s brother, is much more even-tempered. Kaos’ name says it all – he is aggressive for food; he loves to

eat. Mercury is the first tiger I ever had that lets me do anything with him. Samson is fabulous. And Star is a female, meaning that she’s much more aggressive than the males because the females are the ones that raise the cubs.” Kaos, Mercury, Max and Rocky are the ones currently performing in the show. Thomas, who has a huge training area in the center of the compound, says that he has been working with Mercury to get him comfortable in the act again since the cat hasn’t been in it for a while. He admits that one has to have a heightened sense of awareness to work with exotics. “Still, I’d rather do this than jump out of an airplane,” he acknowledges. “There is also far more danger in a car than with a tiger. I have less fear because I work with them everyday. I’m not trying to downplay the danger but we all choose our lots in life.” Thomas reveals that he doesn’t like pushing the tigers when it comes to their performing in the show and that if one is a challenge on a particular day, he lets it go because he doesn’t want the animal to do anything that is uncomfortable for it. He will sometimes bring the tiger to the hotel anyway to see if it will snap out of what’s bothering it but if it doesn’t, Thomas will switch it with one of the other tigers to do the illusion. Thomas transports the tigers back and forth from the hotel every night for the show – and sometimes during the day to work with them on stage, such as he has been doing lately with Mercury. He uses food to train them and says that the most serious time with them is when they are six months to a year old. “Tigers can be trained but never tamed,” he informs. “You are able to obtain one when there is a need for one to be obtained and you get them as cubs. You have to be hands-on with them constantly – it takes a lot of dedi-

cation. They can put up with people when they are six months to a year old but, after that, they separate from humans, although they will bond with one or two.” “Tigers are mischievous and constantly need to be told what to do,” he adds. “They are stubborn learners and they don’t need humans to survive. I spend five hours of constant time with them everyday – two hours before the show cleaning them up and loading them into the trailer, then the hour and a half of the show, and an hour after the show. When it comes to the stage, they

www.RisqueLVmag.com

all know their spots – they hear their music and they know what’s going on.” Thomas notes that tigers and people don’t mix and that he has two handlers for the tigers who are with him at home and at the hotel but that the dancers in his show aren’t allowed within 10 feet of the tigers’ cages. His act is designed so that there are no dancers performing when the tigers are on stage. “My show is my life,” Thomas sums up. “I’m always designing a new show. I’m always pursuing my dream non-stop and I’m looking forward to doing something grand for Vegas in the near future.” Guaranteed his beautiful feline companions will give their roar of approval. That’s the magic of Rick Thomas.

by Bobbie Katz When was the last time you were told that it was was okay to eat dinner with your hands? At the “Tournament of Kings” at the Excalibur, it’s absolutely the order of the day. With its medieval Flair, a genuine jousting tournament, great special effects including dragons and Fire wizards, and a Finger-licking good meal, this show is a royal treat for the entire family. Taking place in the more than 900-seat King Arthur’s Arena at the hotel, it is a fantasy excursion into the intrigue and excitement of medieval Europe. continued on page 70

Tournament of Kings continued from page 69

“People can express themselves at this show,” explains Patrick Jackson, the production’s creator/producer, about its popularity that has seen it just celebrate its 20th anniversary at the hotel. “It is interactive and there’s a certain freedom in the room. People hate each other without really hating each other.” At Tournament of Kings, guests can really show their colors. The kings, each wearing a different hue, represent seven different countries – Russia, purple; France, blue; Ireland, green; Spain, orchid; Austria, brown and tan; Norway, orange, and Hungary, burgundy. The Dragon Knight wears black. The crowd is seated in eight different sections, each corresponding to a particular king and his color (one section corresponds to the Dragon Knight) and each section cheers its king on. From show to show, no one knows which royal will win this exciting jousting tournament – for real. The story begins when, amid the backdrop of a fanciful feast, King Arthur gathers his fellow kings of Europe in his kingdom of Avalon for a no-holds-barred jousting competition to honor his son, Christopher. The rival kings begin the games, riding their faithful steeds through rounds and rounds

70

of medieval sport, testing their skills, agility, strength and endurance. But as the event winds down and the victorious king takes his celebration lap, the evil fire wizard Mordred (played by Anthony Restivo, who was a semi-finalist on this year’s America’s Got Talent) attacks, dampening the festivities and threatening to throw the land of Avalon into an age of fire and shadows. Kingdoms clash, beasts attack, and fire burns bright. The dragon kills a king by knocking him from his horse, then challenges Arthur and wounds him mortally. Before dying, Arthur asks his son to avenge his death. Christopher is left to fight the dragon and Merlin the Magician appears to explain that because of an old curse, once wounded, the dragon turns into a Dragon Knight. Christopher wounds the dragon and the transformation occurs. Six fighters, dressed as one-half dragon, one-half fighter, then enter and surround Christopher, who seeks help by blowing his horn to beckon the kings. With the royals’ assistance, Christopher defeats all the dragons, including the Dragon Knight. Merlin reappears and presents the Sword of Arthur, Excalibur, to Christopher. A celebration follows. With 36 cast members, 26 horses (currently; there are normally 30), and elaborate costumes (new ones will be put in the show in December), one can only imagine the huge expense involved in this production. “This is a very expensive show to run,” admits Jackson. “There is a lot of maintenance. Costumes can get ripped very easily. I wish that the guys in the cast would hit each other a little softer but there is this real macho guy thing going on. It’s better for the audience but it’s nerve-wracking because you don’t know what’s going to happen. My biggest worry is that someone or one of the horses will get hurt. I am constantly hands-on. ”We have a very clean safety record,” he adds. “We know every inch of the arena. My dad and I, who created the show especially for the Excalibur, were there when they built it. We told them what we needed and it was built with our specifications in mind. We use every inch of space outside as well as back space. When you work in a tighter space, you need to pay more

Holiday 2010

attention. Everyone knows where they’re supposed to stay. We don’t allow guests backstage for this reason. We do a meetand-greet in the arena after the show with Diablo, our black Fresian horse. He’s always very secure.” Jackson notes that there are 10-12 horses used every night in the show and that the same horse is never used two days in a row. The breeds of the equines include Fresian, Morgan, Arabian, Quarter horses, and Andalusian. For 19 years, Ivan Caulier has been the company manager and stunt coordinator who knows each horse and ensures the safety of the animals and their riders. He warms the horses up beginning at 4:30 p.m. (the show starts at 6 p.m.) and rehearses them every night after the show. For the last year, Jackson has also retained a female horse trainer from France named Jesse Bonneau. “It’s like having 30 children,” Jackson smiles, talking about the horses. “They live in a stable the hotel built for us and they are very well cared for by a staff of 10, including a stable manager and an assistant. We have one veterinarian and there are others on call. A ferrier comes in once a week to change the horses’ shoes.” All the king’s horses – and all the show’s men, women, scenery and special effects – make this production a thrilling spectacle to behold. It is one show in which excitement is truly the crowning glory.

Based on the classic novel by Gaston Leroux, the musical tells the story of the hideously deformed Phantom who lurks beneath the stage of the Paris Opera, exercising a reign of terror over all its occupants. He falls instantly in love with the young soprano, Christine, and devotes himself to creating a new star for the Opera. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s beautiful music heightens the romance and tragedy of this story, and Maria Bjornson’s glorious designs and Harold Prince’s direction transport the audience to the Paris Opera and the Phantom’s candlelit underground lair.

Cast as the delicate ingénue “Christine Daaé” is Kristi Holden, who was seen in regional productions of Mame and The Sound of Music. Andrew Ragone, from the national tours of Evita and the Tony Award-winning The Light In The Piazza, takes on the role of the charming “Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny.” Musical Diva “Carlotta Giudicelli” played by Joan Sobel, has sung with Opera Ontario

and New York City Opera Touring Company. As Carlotta’s companion, Opera star “Ubaldo Piangi,” is Broadway veteran Larry Wayne Morbitt who brings 12 years of Phantom experience to The Phantom Theatre at The Venetian. Tina Walsh, from the original companies of Mamma Mia! Las Vegas and EFX!, plays the commanding dance mistress “Madame Giry.” Brianne Kelly Morgan makes her musical debut in Phantom – The Las Vegas Spectacular as inquisitive ballerina “Meg Giry.” The Opera’s new managers “Monsieur Andre” and “Monsieur Firmin” are brought to life by John Leslie Wolfe and Lawson Skala, both veteran stage performers with extensive opera and musical theatre credits. Phantom’s ensemble is also rippling with talent featuring performers with backgrounds from Broadway to the silver screen, each adding to the chemistry of one of the most experienced casts on the Las Vegas Strip.

Who doesn’t powder their nose or freshen their lip gloss before a big meeting or date? Don’t you feel more seductive with the new smokey eye shadows and long, thick, dark lashes? Doesn’t bright red lipstick make you feel more glamorous? Don’t you feel sexier just because you bought a new shade of bronzer or blush? Great make-up artists have launched the careers of stars, models, brides, wives, beauty queens, and any woman who knows the

power of being truly beautiful. If you long for the courage and confidence to unleash this power, it can be as simple as taking a class at Rain Makeup Academy. Rain Andreani, is a lithe, blond, beautiful intelligent professional who exudes personal and professional beauty from the inside out. Her love for make-up started when she was a little girl playing in her mom’s make-up drawer. Mesmerized by the colors and feelings that lipstick, eyeshadows, blush, mascara and brushes gave her, she perfected her art with beauty pageants. She learned the importance of looking great on and off the Holiday 2010

stage. Rain was planning on being a news caster after completing her degree in Communications at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. But destiny introduced her to a dark, handsome, Italian, world famous fashion photographer. Sparks began to fly. And Rain’s fate was changed forever when Alfredo Andreani asked her to fill-in and do the make-up for a model shoot. A three way love affair between Rain, Alfredo (her subsequent husband,) and make-up catapulted Rain to celebrity status. After the photo shoot, she started to rub elbows with the likes of Las Vegas celebrity

hair stylist, Michael Boychuck. It landed her a job working at AMP Salon at the Palms Casino and Resort. Building her referrals and with the help of her husband’s connections, her clients were mostly red carpet celebrities. Rain’s brushes have touched the faces of Paris Hilton, Mandy Moore, and Britney Spears to name a few. But it’s Rain’s charisma and intelligence that creates lasting star power. With make-up as her medium, Rain expanded her power of illumination to create The Rain Make-Up Academy. Rain’s passion to teach her students to

“reach for the stars,” is unprecedented as Kesha Penn, a former student will attest. “Within just five days of intensive training, I gained the knowledge and confidence I needed to launch my new career. Within two months, Rain was giving me celebrity referrals. I worked with Colleen Maloof, the mother of George Malooff, owner of the Palms Casino and Resort, and Itati Cabtorai, a Spanish actress who presented at the 2010 Latin Grammies. Then I landed the job to do the make-up for Vegas Bachelorette Party Project and assisted in The 2011 Laura Croft

calendar. I also did the make-up for the winner of The Peepshow Sweepstakes. I couldn’t believe it. It was so amazing!” Kesha attributes all of her good fortune to Rain’s Make-Up Academy. She had been a model since she was nine years old but stopped at twenty-three. She loved makeup and decided she wanted to be a make-up artist. Her dilemma was that she couldn’t find a school just for make-up artists. Frustrated with the curriculums of the cosmetolcontinued on page 86

ogy schools that were costly and required months of training with hair and nails, she was thrilled when she discovered Rain’s Academy for Make-Up. The five day all inclusive class gave Kesha the credentials and confidence she needed. She learned everything from how to prep for a client, details of color theory, Smokey eyes, defining her niche to the business skills of making money. The curriculum is thorough, intense but so much fun she assured me. “The most terrifying moment was when I had to do Rain’s make-up. My hands began to tremble when I started to touch her face.

86

I was so close to her and afraid I was going to make a mistake, “ Kesha confessed. “But Rain assured me that there were no mistakes to make-up. She told me that you could always cover-up, re-blend, or start over. This made me feel better. Once my hands stopped shaking, I began to remember everything I’d learned. But practicing on live models gave me the confidence I needed. By the end of the week, I won the Top Make Up Artist Award for the class.” Kesha was thrilled! In five days, Kesha gained the confidence and expertise to launch a life changing dream career. Kesha bubbles over with enthusiasm for her experience. “I learned so many things at the Academy, from how to label myself in the industry, to letting go of my fears, learn-

ing about color, and the art of paying attention to the details. But when Rain referred me to her celebrity clients and they loved my work, I knew this was the best thing that ever happened to me.” Like Kesha, we all have an inner power to be beautiful that needs to be unleashed. All it takes is the curiosity to find the courage to break the rules and learn to do something different. Feel what it’s like to question everything. Learn what it takes to believe in yourself and then follow your heart. Beauty is more than in the eyes of the beholder. Beauty is being full of you. BE....A....U........That Is......FUL. Rain has mastered this art. Like Kesha, her Academy can teach you how to do it too!

Tall, wavy dark blonde hair, charismatic smile, the not so typical poker face. Most who meet Christina Lindley gravitate to her because of her smile and her genuine personality. Lindley was born in Atlanta, GA, moved to Los Angeles for modeling and acting, and now Christina recently has moved to Las Vegas, to pursue poker full time. “Las Vegas is the poker capital of the world, according to Lindley. She has become a local celebrity and you can find her on a table during some of the local tournaments in continued on page 98 Las Vegas.

Her roommate is fellow high stakes tournament player, Lauren Kling, who was previously interviewed on Women’s Poker Hour. Christina advises women players, starting out in multi-table tournaments, to play a lot of volume and to observe strong players in the online tournaments as much as possible. You might want to start by watching lindeyloo22 on PokerStars.net. This is one of the many online poker websites where Christina can be found on a nightly basis, she typically will play from 6pm to 11am the next day juggling multiple hands. She is a power house player and with the dedication to the sport for the past three years, Christina is seeing some serious paybacks. She recently placed 63rd in the Main Event of the North American Poker Tour in Los Angeles (November 12 - 17) and was the last women standing. And she has a number of other impressive online cashes, including 2nd place in an FTOPS (Full Tilt Online Poker Series) event with a payoff of $106,000. The USCOOP event (US Championship of Online Poker), held on November 23rd featured super-deep stacks and an impressive overlay of over $300,000. (Editor’s Note: An overlay occurs when the prize pool exceeds the money generated by the players’ entry fees.) Only 1326 players registered for the $320 tourney but more than 2300 were needed to meet the $750,000 guarantee. This meant that the average player’s entry fee was actually worth over $550! We met up with Christina a few weeks ago, and she has a solid vision to play as much as she physically possibly can. She will also be working on a reality TV show this spring that she created called Grinders; a behind the scenes look of the life of different poker players. This show that will be very interesting to watch and see what their lives are all about. She has tenacity and optimism as well as just amazing positive energy around her and of course a little luck and good looks to help disguise her poker face! I visited with Christina and got a better understanding of who she really is. How did you get started in this type of sport? I came into poker during the writers’ strike, and being a Type A personality I love to set goals and be working on something. There was nothing to do work-wise so I went home and visited my father who took me to play poker as a bonding activity. I fell in love with it immediately and had great results my first time. I didn’t really even know what I was doing at a 2/4 limit game in Tunica, MS with dad. When I got back to LA I took a hosting workshop and they asked continued on page 100

Christina LIndley continued from page 98

us to write a show about something that intrigued us. This is when I decided to write a show about poker and began researching it more. I fell in love with the lifestyle, the game, and every facet of the business when I was studying it and I went from wanting to learn about it to wanting to do it myself. What would you say to the person who might be wondering if they could do it? I would say you never know unless you try. Honestly if you told me a year ago that I would be where I am today I wouldn’t have believed you. Yet I am constantly pursuing absurdly lofty goals. I think that we have the power to achieve anything if we are willing to sacrifice and put in the work to get there. What would say is the most important thing about this business? Being stubborn! No matter how many times I lose, I refuse to quit until I win. Tenacity, a competitive spirit, and putting in volume; to me this is what I see really separates the best (the people I admire in this business) from the ones who are just good.

job. I think that there are people who have lost everything in every part of the country. It’s sad when it is due to an addiction such as alcohol, drugs, or gambling. You definitely see it on a grander scale here but that is just the nature of the person who is an addict who won’t quit. It’s not because it’s Las Vegas. Life can sometimes seem as a gamble. Do you see that? And is there any truth to it or any similarities? And in what way? Life is a gamble. I think this can be said of many businesses. Look at the stock market. How many people have gone bust on that? How many people invest their life savings in some project that never takes off? Everything in life is a gamble. What form of transportation we chose, which way we turn at every moment, what college we chose to go to, who we choose to marry in life, where to live, what to say to whom and when. Literally

What kind of advice do you have? Just do what you love. Growing up, the only thing I wanted to do was act. I thought I loved acting until I stumbled on poker. I was so passionate about it that I knew immediately it was meant to be. I think a lot of the time we fall into things, or come upon something that seems unrealistic and we just continue in the job that we are doing now out of fear or laziness. Sometimes maybe a little of both. To truly be successful at what you do as a career, I think you need to wake up every day actually excited to go to work. Gambling in Las Vegas, you meet people from many walks of life. Some people have lost everything… what are your thoughts? I think this can be said of any major city. And in every part of the country. I have lived in Tennessee, Georgia, California, and Nevada. I have traveled all over the country and the world in my

100

Holiday 2010

every decision you make in life is about analyzing your risk versus your reward. All we can hope for in this life is to make the right choices, and to take shots where they are the most likely to reap a profitable reward. This reminds me of one of my favorite books my mom used to read me as a kid. Oh The Places You’ll Go. A particular passage comes to mind: “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And you are the guy who’ll decide where to go.” Well with all that said it sure sounds like Christina is on her way and we definitely will be keeping our eyes on her as she cruises into the new year !
