VOTER’S GUIDE OREGON FAMILY COUNCIL • Primary Election • May 20, 2008
This Voter’s Guide does not represent an endorsement by, or on behalf of any church, business, or other organization that is in any way associated with its distribution. It is presented as a non-partisan, non-biased information service by Oregon Family
Council, Portland, Oregon, USA.
How to Use This Voter’s Guide Inside you’ll find candidate’s positions on a variety of issues including abortion, gambling, pornography, education, taxes and religious freedom. Answers are organized by contest beginning with federal & statewide races, state legislature, local, city, county and judicial elections. Answers have been compiled in a non-biased, non-partisan format. Candidates were asked to complete a questionnaire by mail, fax, email, phone or in cooperation with other organizations such as the Oregon Women’s League. While the vast majority of candidates responded to our questionnaire, some did not. For those candidates we have presented past voting records, endorsements, affiliations or other information that we hope will give you a better understanding of their position on these issues.
How Do I Register to Vote? Registering to vote in Oregon is very easy. If you are registering in Oregon for the first time, your registration must be submitted to your county elections office no later than 21 days before the election. To qualify, you must answer “Yes” to the following questions: 1. Are you a resident of Oregon? 2. Are you a United States Citizen? 3. Are you at least 18 years of age? If you have changed your name, address, signature, or to change your political party, you must submit an updated voter registration card to your county elections office. To pick up an official voter registration card or if you have any questions contact our office at 503-257-0444 or visit www.OregonVotes.org.
How the Questions Were Presented to the Candidates
Why Christians Should Vote
Candidates were asked to provide a simple “support” or “oppose” answer, reflecting the kind of response they must ultimately provide as an elected official. To further help voters in their candidate research we’ve also included a campaign phone number when available. 1. Life. Would you support or oppose restricting abortion with exceptions only for rape, incest and the life of the mother? 2. PRCs. Would you support or oppose allowing the government to investigate and regulate organizations such as Pregnancy Resource Centers that provide information about alternatives to abortion? 3. Gambling. Do you support or oppose a casino located off tribal lands in the Columbia River Gorge? 4. Decency. Would you support or oppose a law requiring filters to be placed on computers available in public libraries that would deter viewing of Internet pornography? 5. Marriage. Do you support or oppose a constitutional amendment defining marriage as only between one man and one woman? 6. Religion. Would you support or oppose including religious exemptions in legislation to prevent restrictions of religious freedom? 7. Education. Would you support or oppose requiring teachers and administrators at private schools to be licensed by the state? 8. Kicker. Do you support or oppose the existing law that requires the state of Oregon to return over-collected taxes to individual taxpayers?
In recent decades, the traditional family and the moral values prescribed in the Bible have come under tremendous attack. Nofault divorce, alcoholism, abortion, gambling, pornography, the gay rights movement and “separation of church and state” issues have helped contribute to a culture that is growing increasingly hostile to the Christian faith and values upon which this nation was founded. In the wake of this erosion of values lies an epidemic of broken families and lives with no compass to lead them. That’s why as Christians, our involvement in community affairs and public policy is so vital. In Matthew 5:13-14 Jesus proclaimed that Christians were the “salt of the earth” and “the light of the world.” In other words, as Christians, we are to help provide a “preserving” influence and a light for “guidance” not just to individuals, but the larger society in which God has placed us. One very important way for Christians in our nation to preserve and guide society is by exercising our Constitutional right and responsibility to vote. King Solomon, regarded as one of the wisest men to ever live, made this observation, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan” (Prov 29:2) Naturally no voter’s guide can answer the important questions about a candidate’s integrity & character. But as you examine a candidate’s position on a variety of issues, visit their website, or call them directly, you can begin to understand the philosophy a candidate will bring to public office if elected. This is why we publish the Christian Voter’s Guide and hope you find it a valuable addition to your other voting resources.
