Yes. You may eat carbs even when you want to lose 5 pounds! That is good news for many people who are carb lovers, but happen to want to lose weight also. Restricting yourself to eating no carbs can set you up for failure. Why is that? Because it is so restrictive it makes you start to feel deprived. And that can lead to binging for the food you restricted. That doesn't help with your real goal to lose 5 pounds. However, you need to understand that there are 2 types of carbs: simple and complex. Which carbs you eat while trying to lose 5 pounds makes a HUGE difference! Let me try to explain the difference for you. Simple carbohydrates are NOT GOOD for weight loss and weight control. Sugar is the main example of a simple carbohydrate. And we all know that sugar will not help with weight loss. Try to choose more natural foods such as fresh fruit and vegetables. The highly processed food that are quick and easy to grab are usually loaded with sugar, fats, and lots of chemicals to extend shelf life. Even your fast foods have lots of ingredients to extend shelf life. When those ingredients are present, you know that it is harder for the body to process them. Now on the other hand, complex carbohydrates are good for weight loss. Think of throwing some broccoli in your morning eggs, a side of cole slaw (no mayo), or carrot sticks to accompany your meal. They are low calorie food choices that will fill you up, not out! Complex carbs includes potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, beans, cereals, most vegetables and fruits. These carbs are wonderful for everyone, including dieters. Experts recommend we eat 55-60% of our calories from these carbs. Potatoes get a bad rap as being too starchy and high calorie. I beg to differ. A potato is actually a high fiber food, when you leave the skin on! That is the critical part. If you take off the skin and then deep fry it in oil...that is when it becomes a dieters enemy. Did you know that white bread will turn immediately into sugar once its in your body? Yep. Your body does not know the difference between a tablespoon of sugar and a slice of white bread. However, whole grain breads do take longer to digest because of the higher fiber content. It slow down the digestive process and the sugars are released into your system slower. Think of a slow motion movie clip. You can then visualize how it is released into your system. And think of how an oil well gushes up quickly when its first uncapped. That is how sugar gushes through your body and creates havoc.
