“TODAY WE DO THE TON”

Welcome to the 2017 Festival of Jurby sponsored by wemoto.com, organised by the Isle of man section of the Vintage Motor Cycle Club Ltd and promoted by the Motorcycling Festival of Jurby Ltd. Now in its eigth year the Festival has become an integral must attend event for all visitors to the Festival of Motorcycling. Over the years we have enjoyed the support of an amazing array of International TT and GP road racing stars riding the machines that made them famous and this year is no exception. Our focus this year is the celebration of Bob McIntyres 1957 senior TT win , when he became the first rider to lap the TT Mountain Course at over 100mph. We are delighted to welcome evergreen Sammy Miller who will lead the tribute to Bob Mac by demonstrating a replica of Bob’s factory 500cc 4 cylinder Gilera. Whether your interest is meeting the racing stars, watching the track action or simply drooling over the amazing selection of bikes in both the paddock and bike park , we are sure you will find plenty to entertain you. Jurby is a great day out for all the family.

The Festival of Jurby is the biggest one-day event on the Isle of Man – attracting more than 10,000 spectators all eager to drool over the estimated 5,000 bikes and historic vehicles, not to mention meeting and chatting to some of the greatest names in motorcycling history. It’s a paradise for autograph hunters and without doubt one of the best Vintage Motorcycle events in the world.

Honda RC166 With two-stroke engines dominating motorcycle Grand Prix racing in the 1960s, Honda, as they’ve been known to do time and again, turned convention on its ear and unleashed one of the most amazing--and triumphant--machines ever to appear on a race course, the RC166. Powered by a four-stroke, DOHC, 24-valve inline six-cylinder engine, the 250-class

RC166 roared its way through six open megaphone exhaust pipes all the way up to its 18,000 RPM power peak in a way that wouldn’t be replicated until Formula 1 engine makers began experimenting with pneumatic valve gear and equally high engine speeds in the mid-1990s. Honda engineers committed to the intricate engine because Honda founder Soichiro Honda had committed to four-stroke

www.mr-bike.jp motorcycles for the street and was not a fan of the highly polluting strokers. In order to compete with the more mechanically efficient two-stroke racers (every rotation of the crankshaft delivers power as opposed to every other rotation with a four-stroke engine), Honda engineers needed to build an engine that would spin significantly faster than the competition’s. With six cylinders and 245 cc, each piston

displaced a little under 41 cc from a bore of 41 mm and a stroke of 31 mm. In cubic inches, the entire engine displaced a little over 15-cu.in. For the sake of comparison, a single cylinder in Chrysler’s 426 Street Hemi displaced 872 cc. At 18,000 RPM--when its sound also reached a furious crescendo-it developed 62 horsepower. That’s an astounding 248 hp per liter. If a Hemi had similar specific output, it would have made somewhere north of 1,700 hp.

The festival of Jurby will reverberate to the sight and sound of the Gilera 4 celebrating the great Bob McIntyre’s achievement of being the first man to lap the TT Mountain Course at over 100mph. Amazingly, it’s sixty years since Bob did the TT Double by winning the 1957 Junior and Senior TT aboard his factory entered Gileras, setting a new lap record in the eight lap Senior race of 101.12mph and beating the great John Surtees (MV) into second place.

Today We Do The Ton Jurby celerbrates Bob McIntyre’s 100 mph lap Having worked in a garage from the age of 14, Bob McIntyre was a mechanical mastermind. He began tuning and racing his own bikes at 17, his natural talent soon noticed by his employer, who offered him a ride in the 1951 Junior Clubman TT. McIntyre impressed in the Isle of Man and went on to ride for the AJS works team and then as a private entrant with partner Joe Potts before signing with Gilera. It was in 1957, during his first year with the team, that he made racing history. He had tested his four-cylinder Gilera extensively, and it paid off. He won his first Junior TT on the 3rd of June with a record speed of 94.99mph, and on the 7th, he won his first Senior TT, becoming the sixth in TT history to record a double victory. But it wasn’t this achievement he’d be remembered for. The 500cc Senior was part of the Golden Jubilee IOM TT. It was a special year, so the race was extended to eight laps (302 miles!). Bob’s Gilera had pannier fuel tanks built into the side of the fairings to carry the extra fuel he’d need. But the added weight didn’t stop him from becoming the first person ever to lap the 37.73-mile Mountain course at over 100mph. By the second lap, he’d reached an average of 101mph. McIntyre had made racing history, and would forevermore be considered one of the greatest TT racers of all time.

Sammy Miller and his 1957 GILERA 500 This motorcycle was raced by Geoff Duke OBE, it is powered by a 500cc in-line four cylinder 500cc DOHC engine driving through a five speed gearbox.

Sammy Miller Museum

1964 Grand Prix Bianchi designed by Lino Tonti from the Sammy Miller Museum.

Sammy Miller is a motorcycling legend - 11 times British Trials Champion, winner of over 1,300 events and still winning competitions more than 50 years after his first victory. Sammy’s collection of racing motorcycles has been built up over 40 years. Initially collecting bikes he had ridden during his racing career, including Sammy’s 250cc DOHC Mondial on which he came 3rd in the 1957 World Championship, these bikes come from locations all over the world! The Moto Guzzi Dondolino was in fact found in Argentina! The Sammy Museum houses one of the finest collections of fully restored motorcycles in the world, including factory racers and exotic prototypes, with the collection constantly evolving as new bikes are acquired. This is a living museum with almost every motorcycle in full running order. Sammy regularly demonstrates the machines at race circuits in the UK and Europe, and Museum event days. sammymiller.co.uk

Manx Grand Prix Supporters Club As many of our supporters will be aware the Manx Grand Prix Supporters Club was officially formed on the 15th September 1975 as a result of an accident that occurred when Mick Bird came off his Yamaha at Quarry Bends and had a long wait for an ambulance to arrive during the Manx Grand Prix. The objective of those original members was to enable a helicopter to be available for both practice and race weeks. These ambitious efforts were the foundations on which the supporters club has grown and flourished and with all the continued support we celebrated our 40th Anniversary in 2015. As the Chairman of the MGPSC I am eternally grateful to all supporters both old and new for the dedication to the objectives of the Club. All the money raised and donated to the club is used for the good of the riders in helping to provide medical assistance as quickly as possible, the provision of scoop stretchers, financial aid to competitors who are injured during the races and who may be unable to immediately return to work and also financial support in providing the isotonic sports drinks that the competitors will use during the MGP. Friends and members of the club raise money in various ways with bucket collections, companies holding dress down days, bottles on the bar in local pubs, public selling tea and cakes to spectators from their homes, sponsorship through events such as the local Parish Walk, the list is endless. We are especially grateful for the support we receive from wemoto.com. This is the third year that wemoto have supported us by donating all the proceeds they receive from the sale of the Festival of Jurby T shirts. Last year we received a cheque for over ÂŁ16,000 and indications, so far, are that they will better that figure this year. Why not visit the MGPSC marquee during the festival. We are situated at the back of the TT Grandstand serving light refreshments, pop in for a cuppa and a chat. Please also buy a T shirt which will be on sale both at our marquee and at the wemoto stand on Jurby Day. Allan Brew Chairman MGPSC

In 1992 the Britten won the Dutch round of the Battle of the Twins series and in 1994 it won the BOTT race at Daytona with Kiwi Andrew Stroud at the helm. Stroud went on to win the Daytona race four times for Britten. In 1995 he also won the BEARS (British, European and American

Racing) world championship and the following year Stroud won the New Zealand National Superbike Championship on one of these bikes. The Britten will be ridden by a great friend of Jurby: Bruce Anstey

In 2009 a group of European collectors sharing the same passion for authentic classic racing motorcycles met on several occasions and gave birth to the “Amicale Spirit of Speed.

The Amicale Spirit Of Speed After only 5 years, the Amicale is now the biggest European club for collectors of road racing bikes. With members in the UK, France, Belgium, Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Austria (many of whom are recognised collectors in their own right), the Amicale has established itself with event organisers as a source of machinery rarely seen outside museums.

The Flying Millyard, the work of Allen Millyard, the engine features cylinders from a Pratt and Whitney R1830 9 cylinder radial engine (usually found on Dakota DC3s and other aircraft of the period), with a square bore/ stroke of 5.75. The gearbox is from a 1938 Morris 10 and the clutch was originally fitted to a Honda Pan European. All the cycle parts were hand made by Allen in his garage and were scaled up to match the size of the engine.
