A Message from the Superintendent

Graduation is the highlight of the year. Starting this month, seniors will find themselves with a high school diploma in hand, ready for the next steps of their life journey. We are reminded of the many ways educators, families and our community partners have ensured students are supported and loved. My greatest hope is that our graduates leave Burlington-Edison prepared with the knowledge and determination to create the life they desire for themselves, their family and community. As the year closes, we can reflect on our Road Map promises of strengthening relationships in our communities and schools; creating practices that affirm our students and create safe learning environments; challenging ourselves and each other to address inequities in education; and aligning our resources and strategies towards common goals. Together, we have been working to make sure our systems and practices lift all our students. Over the summer months, we will continue to have summer programs, Board meetings and opportunities for families to engage. This information will be communicated on our website and through social media. If you have not already, please connect with us via Facebook and or Twitter. I hope you have the opportunity this summer to spend time with your family, friends, and loved ones. It has been a wonderful year and a privilege to serve staff, students, families, and community. Best, Laurel

The accomplishments at Allen were astounding this year. We initiated the Spanish Language Literacy Instruction for 105 students in grades K-3. The Lucy Calkins Reading Units of Study was implemented in grades K-4. Allen finished the first year fo Bridges Math instruction in grades K-5, completed our third year of College Preparatory math in grades 6-8, and expanded classroom Number Talks (Ruth Parker) to all grades K-8. At Allen, we have been invested in outdoor education, our thirdgrade students completed the Salmon Project, rearing coho salmon all winter and releasing them into a local river in April. Our eighthgrade students attended a one-day Snow School through the North Cascades Institute in January. Allen School had its 50th-anniversary celebration in May. That was well attended and fantastic to hear all the stories and learn the history of Allen from our Community members. Principal - Steve Finch

It's so rewarding to reflect back on the accomplishments our students have achieved this year! The kindergarten students created a "Me Museum", while 5th-grade held Family Heritage Night with nearly 100% family attendance, and 3rd-grade kids grew salmon from eggs and released them back to the wild. Our life skills students participated in the Dream Builders program where they mapped out their futures; and the 6th-grade students connected with peers from Saudi Arabia using a program called, Flipgrid. The middle school students explored their career interest and options then charted their whole high school path. They also partook in a new online program called, EVERFI. This program addresses financial literacy, health and healthy relationships, math and science tutoring, and digital literacy! One 8th-grade student was awarded a $1000 scholarship for submitting her reflection on the impact of her EVERFI experience on her life. All in all, a tremendous year! Principal - Amy Riesner

It has been a great year! Each month we focus on a learner trait and June is Contemplative Reflective which is perfect for this time of year. Our successes this year come from collaborating with our community! Our 1st- graders planted pumpkin seeds this Spring in a nearby neighbor’s field to be harvested in the fall with every K-8 student receiving a pumpkin. Our 2nd-grade has been learning about the coral reef and the impact of plastic on the reef and advocated for a plastic bag ban to the Burlington City Council. 3rd- grades have raised salmon and collaborated with our 8th-graders and Skagit Fisheries on this project. The 4th-6th-graders have been prepping our school garden this spring. Our 7th and 8thgraders have been working on either a Passion Project or a Global Issues area of concern in their elective classes. We are excited to look back on a such a wonderful year! Principal - Amy Staudenraus

B-EHS

The B-EHS Leadership class organized two big charity fundraisers this Spring. The first was Tiger Jam, a student-run talent show. There were 14 different acts, including musicians, dancers, bands, and singers. This was the 3rd annual Tiger Jam and it has become a great tradition. The proceeds went to the Burlington Boys and Girls Club Summer program. The kids raised over $500. In April we had our annual Cure Cancer Week. The kids sold Cure Cancer Bucks which were the colors of various types of cancer awareness. Students could then put a message on the buck and it was placed on the wall next to the office. They also sold raffle tickets to win the opportunity to shave the heads of Assistant Principals Jeff Demorest and James Campbell at lunch. Head Football Coach and PE teacher Herb Lehman offered a challenge to match the amount raised in the raffle to shave his head up to $400. The kids raised over $400 for that portion. The goal was $1 for each student in the high school or $1100. They were able to exceed their goal. All proceeds were donated to the Skagit Valley Cancer Center. Above is a picture of the Leadership class donating a check to the Skagit Cancer Center! Principal—Todd Setterlund

This year we’re saying goodbye to our lead teacher and program administrator, Linda Larrabee. Linda is retiring after serving the Burlington School District for 31 years and has worked in five buildings: Allen Elementary, Edison Elementary, West View Elementary, Lucille Umbarger Elementary, and Burlington North. She is adored by students and teachers alike. We are not sure what we’ll do without her next year. Please join us in wishing Linda a happy, relaxing retirement! Teacher– Sam Wasson

West View

Our teaching staff at West View started the year with a focus on strengthening our family partnerships. Our Family Partnership goal for the year read: Our goal is to build authentic, collaborative, reciprocal relationships with families, which cultivate the conditions necessary for students to achieve at high levels. As an action step towards meeting this goal, we conducted 50 family visits during the year! Each family visit gave teachers a unique opportunity to hear from parents about their hopes and dreams for their child, and what they value as a family. It also gave teachers a powerful way to communicate to parents, “You are important! We want to learn from you. Upon reflection of the family visits, teachers excitedly recounted new bonds of trust and connection with parents, increased confidence and engagement in students, and a feeling that we are all one community. We are excited to visit 50 more West View families next year! Principal - Tamara Skeen

Lucille Umbarger At Lucille Umbarger, we have wrapped up a very successful year! Partnering with the community was a priority for the team at LU and this year we had a number of events that went very well. We held a family movie night, summer safety where we partnered with community resources including the fire department, the public library, local law enforcement, and of course with our families. We have also been working hard on connecting with our Spanish speaking families. We hope to see families continue connecting and students continuing to inquire. Help your child realize the importance of asking questions and being curious. Inspire them to discover, explore and learn. With a positive attitude and confidence, you can guide your children to a brighter future. It has been a pleasure serving you as Principal of Lucille Umbarger. Have a great summer. Principal - Nick Hayes

Early Learning Preschool is wrapping up another busy year of learning, with over 100 students enrolled! This year we had several classrooms participating in MONA partnerships, we were able to once again offer Dad’s Nights, and we completed units on things like the solar systems, insects, and sounds in our environment. We once again supervised teaching interns from Western, and are excited about the future teachers headed our way. We will be sending a number of children on to Kindergarten in the Fall, and look forward to having many returning preschoolers next year.

Opportunity K

It's been a wonderful semester in Opportunity Kindergarten! We have made new friends, practiced Kindergarten routines, and learned so much. We have enjoyed our time together learning and playing, and are so excited for Kindergarten in the fall! Teacher– Alex John
