ALL SHOTS TAKEN OCTOBER 2020 DURING SEVERAL WALKABOUTS AROUND NEWCASTLE WEST TOWN CENTRE
I set out with a goal of capturing, if I could, some of the character of Newcastle West town centre and its community.
As we approach Halloween BH weekend, the streets and surrounds seem a little strange, subdued. Yet there is also with this a subtle atmosphere or undercurrent of Christmas in the air.
Despite this festive astral vibration, shops are preparing to close. Corona virus Level 5 restrictions are about to set in, and long dark winter night are almost upon us.
Water Tower Power
/Angle shot
Water tower, situated in the park, 2 minutes’ walk from the main Square. Supplies water to the town and surrounding area of Newcastle West (NCW). Made from concrete, its structure has strong lines and rectangular patterns throughout. Its location and height provide good network coverage for telecom and mobile broadband connectivity for the town.

Aldi Car Park
/Full Frame/Full Light
High wall surrounding the Aldi store. Situated 1 minutes’ walk from the Square NCW. The wall is topped with barbed wire with black bin liners tangled and shredded by the wind, creating abstract shapes A plane in the distance offers depth to the viewer and maybe a glimpse of adventure, as it fly’s towards the sun.
Shot 2
Market Woman
/Macro
Bronze statue of a Market Stall woman overlooking the old market ground, the center court of the Square, NCW. She is depicted making and selling butter. The Bank of Ireland building in the background seems colour balanced with the greening bronze statue. She looks over the townsfolk from a past not long forgotten.
Shot 3
Head Down, Now I am walking
/Full Frame
A shopper watches his step, or perhaps just contemplating another moment, while walking on Maiden street, NCW. The vibrant red metal door behind him creates a contrast between foreground and background.

Window Cleaner
/Full Frame/Shadow
A shopkeeper inspects her work after cleaning the windows of her boutique on the last day of being open. From tomorrow, just phone orders and deliveries as Level 5 Corona virus restrictions begin. Late afternoon shadows and light from the left. All Seasons Boutique on Bridge street, NCW.
Shot 5
420 Love
/Full Frame
An old and subsiding spectator stand with colourful Graffiti. Part of the old Greyhound Racing facility located 2 minutes’ walk from the Square, NCW. Not so much used for greyhound racing nowadays, as attitudes about live course hare racing change in society. More importantly now, as has been and still is, a known hangout spot for younger people. Often gathering there and at any time of the day or night.
Shot 6
Scary Times
/Full Frame
Siblings in fancy dress, out for some Halloween fun, stop for a rest in the main Square and discuss their selection of treats. The family dog, sitting in an oversized dog-coat, waits patiently to resume her walk.
Shot 7
Angel for Sale
/Macro
A small stone cast Angel statue, still in its plastic wrapping and with visible barcode attached, kneels centre stage in a mason’s unkept window display. A front window more than shopfront for a Memorial Stone workshop, located on Church street, town center, NCW.
Shot 9
Face Time
/Full Frontal/Side view/Shadow
This image of two girls, chatting while waiting in que at an ATM machine, was shot outside the AIB, NCW. It was late evening, they were standing on steps above the camera, with fading sunlight causing no detail but profiles captured. I almost dismissed the shot at first. The silhouette effect occurred by accident and the texture adds calmness of the frame
