Your guide to A-Levels When you leave school one of the options available to you as you continue your education are A levels. A level qualifications are a route to university, and also show potential employers that you are capable of thinking and working at a more advanced level.
What do I need in my GCSEs to be able to go on to do A levels with St Helens College? You need to obtain a minimum of five GCSEs at grade C or above including English and maths. Certain subjects that we offer may also have additional subject entry criteria. Regardless of your grades on GCSE results day, there may still be an A level package available for you, so drop in to see our A level manager. How long does it take to achieve my A levels with St Helens College? A levels take two years to achieve. In the first year you will follow the AS programme and take exams at the end of the year. AS levels are standalone qualifications worth half an A level. Most students will continue to the second year, which is the A2 or A level year. The results from the exams at A2 are combined with the results from AS to give a full A level. How should I choose which A levels to study? We offer a wide choice of A level subjects including English Language, Law, History, Business, Psychology and more. (See our course listings for the full range.) It is important to consider which subjects are right for you to study and what GCSE results you may need to secure your place. If you know what you want to study at university or, if you know what job you would like at the end of your course, then you should check what requirements they have before you make your final decision. Don’t panic if you are unsure what to do – our careers team will be able to offer you sound advice and guidance to help you make your decisions. How many A levels can I do at St Helens College? You will normally choose 3 subjects that you will go on to achieve full A levels in. What can I do once I have my A levels? We guarantee a place for all of our students on our Higher Education degree courses which are accredited by prestigious university partners. We can provide support for your UCAS applications if you are applying to another university or, if you wish to move into employment, we can offer career advice.
