Biography I Portrait Name: Kuan Hung, Chen Birth: 1985.11.15 Blood Type: A Specialty: animation Hobby: observe people

Biography

was born in Hsin-Chu, Taiwan, and grew up in the village along the sea. The peaceful environment gave me a sense of beauty toward nature unobtrusively. My childhood was sweet and carefree. When I got in touch with Nitendo video game player and LEGO for the first time, I was fascinated with them and even forgot to eat and drink. I liked to indulge in the world that created by myself and keep daydreaming everyday. At my sixth year, my parent brought me to learn painting. I was not forced to imitate the teacher’s style and was allowed to draw as my own imagination and they said my drawing was bold and energetic.

For the years in the high school, I joined the Computer & Software Development Club for the dream of game design. At first the purpose was to learn the computer science, but soon I wanted to be a web designer when I was responsible for the design of the club’s homepage. It’s my first time to experience the beauty of graphic design. I also started to collect other designer’s work pieces which have a great visual impact and the tutorial for the design software like photoshop and illustrator. Even I got a great interest in the visual creation. I was still put lots of time on studying physic, chemistry and biology for the collage entrance exam.

After I attended Jhunan junior high school, the life was nothing special but study different basic subjects. At the same time I quit painting for some reasons. Therefore, I was put in the text books in this exam-oriented education environment. However, in such a rebellion age, we played for fun in the leisure time to resist the stuffy school life. I remember Blizzard entertainment released the game “StarCraft” in 1998. We spent lots of time on it. The art style and science-fiction atmosphere arouse my interest in concept design and set design.

When thinking about what the department of university I should choose. My first priority was the job opportunity and the regular payment in the future, just like other people. It is a really practical consideration. Finally, I entered Chemical & Material engineering in National Central University (NCU). In the days of freshmen and sophomore, I dedicated myself to fundamental research and study. I want to realize the whole system of knowledge to know where my position is and what I can do in this field.

6

When it comes to the days at Fashion and Communications Design institute, it was a totally different experience comparing with my college life. I met a lot of talented guys, which is not only specialize in the visual design and animation, but also sensitive to fashion design. What influenced me the most is the training of “taste” Both in the visual and any other things of life. The assistant professor Shih-Wei, Wang assigned us to finish one animation project each semester, and I’ve progressed a lot during the process of working and interact with other classmates. I was impressed by so many different ways of creation. I think my distinguishing feature is that my viewpoint about visual philosophy is pure and fresh. And I have both the concept of science philosophy and the sense of art. Now I’m eager to create more outstanding works and collaborate with more talented guys in the future.

Biography

To gain the knowledge of art, I took the series courses of art history held by Art & History institute in the college. It increased my sense about Chinese art, western art and Japanese art. Moreover, the good news was that I pick up my pencil started to draw again. It was just like that something inside my brain was awoken. I was “re-sensitive” to the drawing, the color, the stroke, and people’s emotion. During these days I started to create a series art work. It is my first picturebook, a story for my classmate in the college. It combined the concept of chemistry and the fantasy style of illustration. I applied

for the institution of Fashion and Communications Design in Shih-Chien University with the portfolio. As you see, I was totally transferred from science area to art & design area.

7

In NCU, there are a variety of resource of art and literature. I chose science fiction as my literature course. The assistant professor Hong Cyuan Siang discussed with us about the definition of human being and what made us different from the machine. His lecture left great impression on me. At the same time I also enjoyed staying at the “107 movie theater” in our school. It shows some art films which are rarely seen in other place. They both accumulated my source of inspiration. Two of my favorite director are Oshii Mamoru (Ghost in the Shell) and Werner Herzog.

THE CONCEPT OF HIDE AND SEEK

No.0 The Stage

& Hide

Except for Chirico’s paintings, I also collect other artist’s works and Taiwanese culture as references. For example, the scene and building style of Taiwanese street, Taoism, and the shadow show. I want to create a world that combine western and eastern feature. It represents the generality of humanit.

Seek

The story on this stage is about “hide and seek.” For me, the game of hide and seek is similar to a “trigger” for the access of two distinct situations: the reality and the virtual reality. If you were hiding in a place and watching the ghost is searching for you, it is just like that you are watching him in a way of surveillance and with a feeling of alienation. The man being the ghost maybe the friend you’ve already known, but at this moment, he is more like a stranger. What you see can be his other side of identity.

Concept

My concept of the set design is mainly inspired by Giorgio de Chirico. The extraordinary perspective and mysterious shadow remind me of some personal experience in childhood.

Does it matter, for example, that until next Saturday at Sotheby’s it is possible to look at the 1862 message in which Abraham Lincoln wrote to his dilatory Civil War general, George B. McClellan, urging him to take action? Or that we can read letters in which Benedict Arnold seems to be making a few too many excuses for himself during the Revolutionary War?

No.1 The Ghost

Here, I want to emphasize their facial expression. Unlike other animation work, I don’t want let the character have exaggerated body language and emotion. The character is more like an element to show a specific situation of humanity. Even their eyes are without pupils. I leave some extent between two extremes because human personality is inherently ambiguous and is hard to be defined. Moreover, if they were without the pupils in the eyes, everybody looks like the ghost. The specific suspense is what I want. The boundary between normal and abnormal is eliminated.

of

Is everybody getting ready to hide?

Concept

2009, December 32x18 cm Kuan Hung, Chen “Scandium21 Studio”

When it comes to the design of the characters, The prototype that come up in my mind is 4 or 5 kids with the same interest and have a playground as their game base. There is a slide in the shape of dinosaur. I regard it as the symbol of their friendship. The main character got one dinosaur toy in his hand.

No.2 Fear

The shadow’s direction doesn’t necessary correspond to where the light illuminates. The point is to give the sense of space and existence of the character. The ratio of character and building will be modified to emphasize the intense of atmosphere.

A threatening shadow o n t h e f l o o r.

Concept

2009, December 32x18 cm Kuan Hung, Chen “Scandium21 Studio”

In this project, I try to include some features that can cause people fear. I think one of the strongest feeling of fear is that all of the things we’ve convinced are in vain. To express the abstract emotion, I put some distinct symbols together in abnormal perspective, and add the long, dark shadow.

I sometimes have a recall that I was at a playground in that village long ago. However, when I’ve grown up I went back to there to find the place corresponding to my memory. Unfortunately, they were re-constructed with other new buildings. I started to doubt whether my memory is true or not. After all, the indescribable scene let me fall into a deep thought. I think the scene is similar to the idea of surreal. It connect thousand and billions of meaning, both substance and mentality. They intersect in the same place.

No.4 Camouflage

A lot of movies and literatures are talking about the obscure between drama and real life. In the animation film “Perfect Blue” by Satoshi Kon. The main character Mima is an actress who feels a great mental pressure and we audience are hard to tell whether she is acting in the drama or in the reality.

People have the legitimate reason to act another character with the mask. Therefore, the mask is another “trigger” to the transition between real and unreal. It can reveal one person’s subconscious.

No.5 The Tunnel

Now scientists still argue about what is the theory that dominates the whole universe. Even Albert Einstein strongly asserted that “God does not play dice”. However, the following quantum theory replaced the former common sense of people. The concept of our life changed in a short time.

Hide

When we made a decision from thousand of options, it’s just like that we made a moving path toward the superior target, and passing through thousands of tunnel. Every path we choose is different from others. But, can you insist that is not already decided by God’s dice?

We all knew that it’s far beyond a mouse’s ability to calculate a simple equation. When we are laughing at the mouse can not escape from the “maze of intelligence”, maybe we humanbeing are trapped in a bigger maze, too.

No.6 The Mirror

I regard the mirror as an axis which separates two opposite tendency of humanity. The outward tendency is related to s ubstance, science, technology, invasion, territory extension. Reversely, the inward tendency is related to mentality, subconscious, mystery, and analogy. The behavior that we look ourselves in the mirror reveals the complexity of human identity. Some shot in my animation include the same feature of seeing.

No.7 The Shadow

This abstract feeling is another feature I want to include in my animation project. Some symbols are regarded as a signal from the other space. It just like something is calling him to go there.

In this song, it mentioned the feeling of something you seems to have seen before, but you can not tell where it is from. It means “Deja-Vu.” There is a similar situation in the film “Matrix.” If you see a cat appears more than once. It is usually a glitch in the program. It happens when they change something.

No.8 Freewill

My outlook on life based on pessimism. That doesn’t mean I am tired about life and not curious about new things. However, I think it is the pessimism itself gives the definition of beauty. Since the world is changing so rapidly and things are like water keep falling down. The beauty is the independent force of rebellion to the corruption.

Hide

Based on this concept, even we’ve done so much in our life, but it may be no difference from a view of extremely long distance, just like a scarecrow standing still at the place. My animation is not to convey the idea that there is no meaning to do anything. I just try to focus on the valuable side of humanity out of the unreal environment.

No.9 Impulsion

The feeling about time has gradually changed with our age. The older we are, the harder we can differentiate how much time has elapsed. Only under the compression of speed and momentum can we feel the existence of ourselves. In other words, the rapid change of our life and world will notice your soul to let you have the impulsion to run, and run with the arrow toward the future of human being.

The concept is similar to the transition between two stable states. Consequently, I assume there is a field that people share their memory and subconscious. What I’ve mentioned above is an endless argument. However, I think it is the ambiguity between mentality and substance that gives our emotion and relationship the priceless value.

In Andrei Tarkovsky’s film “Solaris”. The scientist said that people extend their territory to the boundary of universe, and deplete the environment with math, physic, astrology knowledge to escape from fear, but failed. After all, what the human-being should find is just a mirror. That is, people need people.

It is what makes our emotion priceless value.

Concept

2009, December 32x18 cm Kuan Hung, Chen “Scandium21 Studio”

The cells in our body split into new ones and refresh every few days. In a way, we are not the person few days ago. If we consider a larger scale, what if everything in the world has changed in physical meaning? Then, what our love and friendship is? Is that still true and trust worthy? If everything can be explained in science in the future, every phenomenon can be summarized in a short equation. Can that solve all our problems?

THE ANIMATION OF HIDE AND SEEK

The Background Story

F

our kids were playing hide and seek in a abandoned amusement park. When Kite (the main character) was hiding, he went astray into a surreal land and lost himself. In the surreal land, Kite found his friends are planning a secret ceremony and he didn’t know what happened. They became strangers and without free will. When fear was dominating Kite’s feeling, the dinosaur toy was dropping from his pocket. It made him think of the past of his friendship. He woke up and became conscious again, going back to the reality. It’s an ongoing project so that the current version is not the final edition. There work will be continued and I will fufill the whole structure.

CORNER ENCOUNTER THE COLLABORATIVE PROCESS WORKSHOP

TheWorkingProcess

D

amian Gascoigne is the lecturer from Kingston University, and works in the area of animation. His film ‘Careful’ (2005) won first prize at the London Animation Festival (2006). At first I thought it was difficult for me to communicate with him in English. But Damian is good at warming up the crowd with intrinsic humor. He uses his body to tell us what an animation is. Actually, animation is direct from our life. What we should do is to observe every detail you can see. When you are waiting for a bus, or going shopping on the street. You can draw anything you suddenly come up with on your sketch book. That will be good source materials you can use from. The name of the workshop is “Corner Encounter”. The corner means we must take picture from a paper box. We can use different light to illuminate on it and try to capture the images from each angle. The picture we took will be our stage of animation. The characters must act on it.

After we finished taking the pictures, Damian assigned two classmates in a team. My team member was Chris Liu. He specializes in 3D animation software. Then we made a draw to our theme. What we got is a bowling. Therefore, our design and story must relate to a bowling.

Ever yone is working.

When five days was over, each group showed their work to everybody. Every creation is creative and interesting. What we’ve done was beyond Damian’s anticipation. He was very proud of it. And he gave us our portraits that he drew in the class. It was surprisingly humor and cute. At last I found that team work can increase the joy, reduce the pain and bore. I think it is an wonderful experience that I will never forget.

2009, April

Chris Liu and I both had some ideas at first. The diffcult task is to express what we thought and make a balance. It was quite frustrating sometimes. In the third day I found the best way to solve the problem is just to go all out. When you start to take action on work, the new ideas will appear spontaneously. I focused on character design and set design. Chris Liu come up with the idea that we combind submarine and bowling in the same situation. Moreover, he constructed 3D model(for the rolling ball) and made a short cut of 3D animation. Everything went smoothly in the following days.

Damian participated in our working process. When I finished the act of my character, Damian will give me some advices and demonstrate in his own way. It’s really practical and I soon realize something worth thinking from his style. That’s the charms of something ambiguity between two different media. That effect is between 2D and 3D, between analog roughness and technology. Finally we work with media but forget media.

In the working process, we started to search for references. Damian reminded us that we often rely on computers too much. When you work on a computer and use internet to collect some pictures for inspiration. You see one photo at a time. Your thinking is constrained in one image. If you work on real papers, it means, you print them out or find some books and put them on the wall. The pictures will connect with each other and generate new meanning. Other classmates can see them, too. Maybe the unrelated pictures will also give some hints and creative idea for others. I benefit greatly by this concept.
