PROJECTS & EXPERIENCE

JIMMY VERHOEVEN Architectuur Architect & Owner Location: Delft keywords: monument, apartments, renovation, Delft Since the fall of 2012, I am working together with Daan Verhoeven on several small projects in the old city center of Delft. The monumental buildings were neglected over the years, due to which they were no longer suitable for living. By smart use of the existing structure, both buildings are successfully redesigned to apartments. The building at the Oude Kerkstraat was a bit more complex; the existing facade was in very bad condition. We took this chance to create a new facade in the style of the Oude Kerkstraat and solved the problem of the entrance for the apartments on the floors and the achterhuis (back house). According to the Heritage Conservation Committee Delft “the new facade of the Oude Kerkstraat 4 is an upgrade for the total streetscape”. Projects: Kerkstraat 10, Delft Design: Fall 2012 Realisation: Spring 2013 Design of the renovation of the monumental building with an “achterhuis” on the Kerkstraat in Delft to 5 apartments. Oude Kerkstraat 4, Delft Design: Spring 2014 Realisation: Summer 2014 Design of the renovation the monumental building with an “achterhuis” on the Oude Kerkstraat in Delft to 3 apartments and a commercial space. Horse-riding school Prometheus, Delft Design: Winter 2014-2015 Preliminary design for a canopy on the outdoor horse area.

FACADE |Designed as an addition to the existing streetscape, 1:200) FLOORPLANS |Ground floor, 1st & 2nd floor; 3 apartments and a commercial space were created,1:200)

Another project is a design for a canopy for the horseriding school Prometheus in Delft. The riding school has a very small budget, but needs to relocate their existing indoor riding facility and canteen. In this Preliminary Design we helped Prometheus in their search for possible solutions and the indication of the costs of a new indoor facility.

FLOORPLAN & SECTION | The simple construcion reduces the costs and optimizes the unity in the school’s complex.

redevelopment,

Since December 2012 I am working at De Mannen van Schuim (The Men Of Foam), a designstudio for commercial real estate. As Architect I am working on with multiple (re) development studies of office buildings and retail projects. Through creativity any problem can be solved. We are involved in the process from an early stage of the project; we design feasible and realistic plans with architectural quality. As a result of the small size of the office, I am closely involved in many diverse projects. From the vision document of an area (Parallelweg Beverwijk) to the redesign of a shopfront (Lijnbaan Rotterdam). A few of the projects I worked on at De Mannen van Schuim: - Hermes City Plaza, Rotterdam Feasibility study and preliminary design for renovation of an office building on the Stadhuisplein Rotterdam - Centrumplan Uithoorn Study for redevelopment and extension of shoppingcenter Amstelplein in Uithoorn - Haaks gebouw, Nieuwegein Competition. Design for the redevelopment of an office building to apartments for starters. - Technische Natuur Wetenschappen, TU Delft Multiple studies for possible redevelopment of the Faculty of Applied Sciences of the TU Delft. UNEC

(United Nations Environmental Council) Graduation Project, TU Delft Location: New York keywords: United Nations, Sustainability, Headquarter, extension, environmental council The United Nations was founded with the aim to facilitate cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress, human rights and world peace. The world’s current environmental problems ask for an additional aim and a new council: one on environmental sustainability. Due to past events (like 9/11) the current UN plot is a disordered area. A new master plan solves the security problems with a podium and gives the United Nations its prestigious face back to the world. Together with the new extension for the UNEC, the master plan will ensure that the UN area will become a unity again. The UNEC building is an icon for sustainability. The extension connects both programmatically and architecturally to the exisiting buildings. A good building, on a good spot will always be valued. People will identify with it and wish to conserve and reuse the building. The UNEC has optimal sun-orientation and passive building services. This building is not as small as possible. Generous spaces will not only give the environmental discussion a platform, but will also make future development possible. Programmatically, the UNEC has two main spaces: the Council Chamber (formal) and the Lobby (informal). These spaces are the heart of the UNEC and it’s the new building. The Council Chamber is the powerful, representative place, recognizable from everywhere. Around this chamber is the place where it actually happens: the Lobby. Spaces are created to meet and argue, to share thoughts and to lobby. This is a place where delegates, UN employees, businessmen and other visitors can meet to discuss the environmental issues.

Living in a rural context Master 2, Elective Course, KTH Stockholm Location: Nyn채shamn, Sweden keywords: Forest, agriculture, village, dwelling, landscape architecture.

Sweden,

Stockholm is growing. A lot of the new housing is built in Nyn채shamn, to the South of Stockholm. A big part of Nyn채shamn is a traditional agricultural landscape, Swedish cultural heritage. The local government and landlords want to use this space to make profit from housing. By clustering the houses in higher density blocks, relatively many houses can be built without ruining the landscape. By adapting these blocks to the type of landscape and placing them optimally, the landscape is barely influenced and even protected for the future. The landscape around Gudby, a village where dwellings are planed, consists of three types of landscape, all with their own characteristics. The agricultural-landscape, an open landscape with some barns, the forest-landscape, landscape with trees concentrated on hills and the village landscape, where the current village is located. All the three types are analyzed and have their own preconditions for dwellings. For each landscape type, a set of rules is made and an impression is given how the buildings can fit in the landscape of Gudby. These buildings make the landscape stronger without standing out.

Primary School ‘t Landje Master 1, Elective Course, TU Delft Location: Rotterdam keywords: Rotterdam, Brede School, primary school, daycare, sportfacilities, private workspaces. Primary school ‘t Landje needs a new and bigger school building on the Schiedamsesingel in Rotterdam. The new school, a “brede school” with sport facilities and day care, has a total size of 4.300 m2. The new school finds its place on the same spot as the existing schoolbuilding, on the south side of the square. The building connects to the urban tissue and creates a safe inner courtyard for the smallest children. By lifting the front wing, the courtyard gets a relation with the existing square, where the older children can play. The building has three wings: a gym wing, a young kinds wing and a old kids class wing. All the classrooms are designed in such a way that children will be able to develop themselves maximally. All rooms have the ability to create spaces to work alone, in small groups or with the whole class. The classrooms are facing outside and connected to the corridor aroud the courtyard with big sliding doors. The sliding mechanism can create different connections with the workspaces in the corridor and the neighboring classroom. The more open the door is, the more kids can work individually. The workspaces in the corridors are emphasized by the use of different materials than the rest of the corridor. Connected to the corridors are multifunctional spaces and stairs are made extra wide to be able to use them as a tribune. In all these ways, the buildings helps each child to develop in its own way.

PRIMARY SCHOOL T’LANDJE | The new school building fits in the existing urban tissue and creates a safe innercourtyard for the smallest children.
