Looking for an event that has it all? The BRI&M’s Blue Ridge Folklife Festival (fourth Saturday in October) has been the region’s largest ongoing folk festival for over 40 years. The New York Times called the BRFF “thoroughly authentic,” and rightly so. Visitors delight in a daylong celebration of traditional music, crafts, storytelling, country foods, horse and coon dog contests, sheepherding, farm work and machinery, custom cars, children’s games, and much more. Curious about The Crooked Road lifestyle? The Blue Ridge Institute & Museum’s gallery exhibits explore all kinds of folkways from the region, everything from old-style music making to today’s traditionbased crafts. At the Institute’s living history Blue Ridge Farm Museum visitors step back into the backcountry farm life of 1800. Traveling by armchair? The BRI&M website leads to a wealth of resources. Explore online exhibits on ballads, hot rodding, and crafts. Enjoy thousands of tunes and photos from the museum archives. Wayside Exhibits
The Crooked Road has a series of 27 wayside exhibits located along the Trail. Just pull your vehicle off the road to read the panels and listen on your vehicle radio to a five-minute audio recording about the heritage music and musicians in that location. The audio can be heard on your vehicle’s FM radio – within a range of about one half mile. The map on pages 24-25 indicates the wayside exhibit locations. Three Virginia Welcome Centers are included in this number. These are located on I-81 northbound at Bristol, I-77 southbound at Rocky Gap, and I-77 northbound at Lambsburg. These exhibits have been made possible with the support of the Virginia Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission and the Virginia Department of Transportation.

A Crooked Road Major Venue With the 83rd anniversary of the festival taking place in August 2018, the Galax Old Fiddlers’ Convention originated in the spring of 1935 when a few members of Moose Lodge #733 in Galax needed to raise funds and generate publicity. A newspaper item at the time stated that the Convention was dedicated to “keeping alive the memories and sentiments of days gone by and make it possible for people of today to hear and enjoy the tunes of yesterday.” The Annual Old Fiddlers’ Convention is a tradition in country and mountain music circles and features tunes which have been handed down from generation to generation in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The fact that many of the contestants are youngsters is encouraging, and the promoters believe that the future of this traditional music is secure. A unique aspect of the convention is the camping area where musicians rehearse and tune up. Often dancers and players try out their abilities in the parking lot. There is often as much activity off stage as on stage. In the early years, the contestants and audience came chiefly from Carroll, Grayson, and adjoining counties in Virginia and North Carolina. Now bands and individual performers come from across the nation and throughout the world. This showcase of old time, bluegrass and folk music is held annually during the week ending the second Saturday in August at Felts Park in Galax, “World Capital of Old-Time Mountain Music.” Directions: From Interstate 77, take Virginia Exit 14. Turn onto Route 58 toward Galax. Continue on Route 58 for approximately 10 miles. Turn left onto Main Street. Continue through main downtown business district. Felts Park is on the left. Damascus
Live music scheduled at these venues. Please contact each business for their current music schedule.
…also known as “Trail Town USA” and “The Friendliest Town on the Trail,” is a small town nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Damascus is the premier destination for those seeking a way into the wilderness as it is located at the confluence of the three top trout streams in the east and seven major trails. The Town is located directly on the Appalachian Trail, with white blazes steering the footpath straight down our Main Street (Laurel Avenue) which results in a town with a culture that is very much influenced by hiking. Additional major trails that cross through downtown Damascus include the Virginia Creeper Trail, the Trans America Bicycle Trail, The Crooked Road Music Trail, the Iron Mountain Trail, the Daniel Boone Heritage Trail, and the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail. Whether you are an outdoor enthusiast interested in the myriad of outdoor activities the area has to offer or just want to enjoy the slow pace of the small town life, there truly is something for everyone. Roam down Laurel Avenue and explore the works of art by local artists, chat with experts at one of our outfitters, or grab a bite to eat at one of our restaurants. In season, visit the Damascus Brewery and the Damascus Old Mill on Saturdays to enjoy local musicians. Don’t want to leave The Friendliest Town on the Trail quite yet? Stay in one of our inns, lodges, cabins, or bed and breakfasts. We invite you to visit with us, sit on the porch of one of our bed and breakfasts, grab a bite to eat, ride a bike through our forests, walk beside a mountain stream, and make yourself at home next to our waterfall. Damascus is also home to the Appalachian Trail Days Festival each May, the largest organized backpacking event in the world. “The 1927 Bristol Sessions is the single most important event in the history of country music.” – Johnny Cash
The Birthplace of Country Music Museum C0 M0 Y0 K100
- A Crooked Road Major Venue
In the summer of 1927, Ralph Peer made a decision that made country music history. Working as a talent scout and producer for the Victor Talking Machine Company, Peer saw the potential to find the music he was searching for in the Bristol, Tennessee-Virginia area. Auditions were held, and artists such as The Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, and Ernest Stoneman recorded in a makeshift studio on State Street in downtown Bristol’s Taylor-Christian Hat Company. Over two weeks, 19 artists recorded 76 songs in what has become known as the 1927 Bristol Sessions, often considered the most important of early country music field recordings. Those recordings initiated and enhanced the careers of these superstar performers, and they were also hugely significant in the broad commercialization of country music. For these reasons, the United States Congress officially designated Bristol, Tennessee-Virginia as the “Birthplace of Country Music” in 1998. Today, the Birthplace of Country Music Museum (BCMM) celebrates and promotes Bristol’s rich musical heritage. The museum, a

The Country Cabin with its descendant, Country Cabin II, is the oldest mountain music - cultural venue currently operating along The Crooked Road. The original Country Cabin was built in 1937 under President Roosevelt’s WPA program as a community recreational facility and is a National and State Historic Landmark. Local musicians gathered at the Cabin every Saturday night to perform and carry on traditional bluegrass and country music. The popularity of the weekly event soon outgrew the log cabin and in 2002, a larger facility was built in nearby Appalachian Traditions Village. In addition to clogging classes, line dance lessons, country weddings, birthday and anniversary celebrations, and the regular Saturday night music show, the Cabin hosts the annual Dock Boggs and Kate Peters Sturgill Memorial Festival the second Saturday in September. This festival honors the lives of two extraordinary local musicians – Dock Boggs, a soulful singer and unique banjo player, and ballad singer and songwriter Kate O’Neill Peters Sturgill. The festival offers local, regional and nationally-known traditional musicians and dancers, handmade mountain arts and crafts, and home-cooked mountain foods. www.appalachiantraditionsinc.com, (276) 679-3541 or (276) 393-8387. Tazewell County

Tazewell County’s musical heritage is evidenced by the continuing tradition of the Old Time Fiddlers Convention held each year at the Historic Crab Orchard Museum & Pioneer Park. The music is real and remarkable; the attendance is outstanding. Music is an important part of many other events in the County; the summers abound with local festivals and fairs at which the sounds of traditional Appalachian music fill the air and local crafters proudly display their handiwork. The Nature Conservancy has called Tazewell County one of twenty “Last Great Places” in the world. It’s a wonderful place to live, raise a family or retire and it’s a great place to visit. Native trout streams, local lakes and the Clinch River make up a fisherman’s paradise. The majestic mountains and country roads afford some of the most beautiful photo opportunities in the state; there are walking, hiking, biking, ATV, and motorcycle trails available for those who enjoy such outdoor activities. The Virginia Coal Heritage Trail runs right through the County; the Pocahontas Exhibition Mine & Museum in Pocahontas and the Virginia State Coal Miner’s Memorial in Richlands will especially appeal to historians. You’ll be welcomed by friendly, smiling people all over Tazewell County! (800) 588-9401, www.visittazewellcounty.org
