President’s Message Hello All! This month I wanted to talk to you all about how grateful I am to be a part of our Guild. As we all know life happens when we least expect it. What I am talking about is the bad stuff..stuff you can’t predict. I know because it just happened to me. Thankfully it wasn’t devastatingly bad..but bad enough to force me to re-evaluate my priorities. For me this meant that family comes first.

I have been blessed with my parents living long lives fairly independently and close by. As they are getting on in years they have each had health issues. This time my Dad had a very serious health problem that required hospital care and rehabilitation. We decided that it would be best to have both of them stay at my house while he re-habilitated instead of a rehab facility. This was working fine until my Mom had a serious illness that required further medical care, a hospital visit and then her rehab at my house. This was a worst case scenario for care-giving, and as you can imagine..this was very stressful and all consuming with two sick and recovering elderly people living at my house in addition to my regular family. Plus, this is the house that I run my business out of! It was clear to me that running my business needed put on back burner, but how can one do this when you have clients to please and bills to pay? Enter our wonderful photographic community, our Guild! After much soul searching I decided to call upon some fellow Guild members for help. It was such a relief to know that I had support, not only to help me with my mental state of mind, but who were willing to shoot for me even though they were busy too. It is very difficult to give-up creative control, but good to know that I could count on them for the same level of professionalism and quality that I would give my client. They were there for me so that I could keep my business commitments with integrity and my family in my forefront. It was such a great feeling to know that I could do it all, that I had support in my time of need, that my community had my back. That is what a family does for one another, and I can honestly say that our Guild is my extended family. I have written and spoken about the many benefits of membership at the Guild, well this is one that is truly immeasurable. Say what you want about the cost of membership, the cost of meetings. etc.. Joining your Guild is an investment in a wonderful community, a community that you can call upon in good times and in bad. We are here for each other and understand what it takes to be successful in our industry, our businesses and our lives. It takes a village to survive and for our little village I am eternally grateful. In the meantime, keep spreading the good karma

7 Steps to Internet Marketing Success Bill Barbosa, Vice-President

Hi its Bill Barbosa, I was reading this past week on how to come up with some interesting ways to do some Internet marketing and found this article I wanted to share with you. 7 Steps to Internet Marketing Success By: Kenneth Rojas Description: Internet marketing success is attainable if you think about your site and where you are going. You have to target the right people and also get in touch with the right parties for whatever it is you want to market. Are you aware of what you’re trying to do when making your online marketing plans work as well as they should? Your path to Internet marketing success does not have to be as complicated as you might think it could be. The fact is that you can easily do more with your business marketing campaign if you simply take a look at a few important steps with regards to making your marketing campaign a little more proficient. 1.Consider What You Want to Do You have to start by thinking carefully about whatever it is you are actually trying to do in your online marketing project. Your project should be more than just something that is capable of bringing in more business. It should also be used to get other people to know more about whatever it is you want to promote. A huge part of Internet marketing success involves not only getting people to visit your site but also with getting your visitors to see what you are like and who you are trying to target. You can’t just go with a regular procedure for online marketing. You have to work extra hard to attain Internet marketing success. Part of this involves thinking ahead with regards to what you actually want to do in the long run. 2.Take a Look At Your Site Sometimes all the marketing tools that you use might not be enough to help you attain Internet marketing success. You might have to consider the content on your site just as well. The fact is that people will be more likely to want to visit your site if you can prove that you have content that is worthwhile and of interest and value to anyone who visit your site. 3.Get Into More Places You might have an easier time with getting closer to Internet marketing success if you market yourself in more places. For example, you can market yourself in places like blogs through guest posts or forum posts. You can also get into a variety of directories when seeing what you’ve got. You clearly have to find multiple places when it comes to promoting yourself. This leads perfectly into the next step. 4.Who Are You Targeting? You have to think about doing more than just getting the word out in any general place. You also have to get the word out in places where your target audience is more likely to be located in. You should think about the people who are more likely to visit your site and take advantage of it before you market it in certain places. You clearly have to think about who will come to your site above all else because the people who do come onto your site are the ones who will be more likely to actually buy things from it. The targeting process will involve a review of what your traffic is like and who is coming to your site. You can use this through an analytical process or by using an analytics program to see who’s coming to your site and therefore who you should be targeting in particular. Continued on page 6... 4

Professional Photographer’s Guild Of The Palm Beaches, Inc. 5.Find Unique Ways to Plug Yourself The problem with so many plans for attaining Internet marketing success is that there are many forms of marketing that just about everyone else has been using. You’ll have to think about unique choices for marketing if you want to actually be seen. For example, you can plug your business by posting online videos through many video sharing sites. You can also create secondary Twitter or Facebook accounts with different marketing items that are somewhat relevant to what your business is about. The things that you can use when finding ways to promote your site are very interesting. The sky’s the limit when it comes to marketing yourself so you should be certain that you think about all the different options you’ve got to choose from when promoting yourself. 6.Be Observant of Your Deficiencies You can’t just assume that you’ll be perfect every single time you do something. You have to acknowledge that your work is far from perfect. You have to think about every deficiency on your site and your campaign so you can figure out what needs to be done in order to make it more proficient. You especially have to be certain about your faults by taking a closer look at the ways of how your site is being promoted. Part of this includes thinking about what you could be doing and why you aren’t getting into certain strategies when trying to promote yourself. 7.Be Unique No one likes it when someone is copying off of everyone else. You’ve got to be unique if you want to stand out. It should be done well so you’ll know what you are maintaining. There are many ways how you can be unique and get to that point of Internet marketing success that you’ve always wanted. For example, you can start by creating new content that is special and specific to your site. Anything that’s new will certainly be welcome. You’ve also got to make your own specific angle with regards to what you want to talk about. You can gear the content you make towards your business and why people should specifically take a look at your own business above all else. These are points for Internet marketing success that should be utilized well enough. You’ve got to be certain that you know what you are getting yourself into if you want your site to be more visible and interesting to everyone. Fortunately, you don’t have to do this alone. Empower Network will help you out with getting all your online marketing plans up and running. Awesome Lightroom 5 Tricks

What’s Taking So Long… And What Is RAM Anyway? Marty Grivjack, Cr.Photog., FSA

There you sit...waiting. What’s going on? All you did was click one button. We’ve all been there...that is anyone who’s ever used a computer. However...you still ask yourself...why is this “stinking program” taking so long? Why the spinning pizza-wheel? The answer is sometimes it’s the computer, sometimes it’s you, sometimes it’s both. I know that’s not what you want to read, but that’s the truth. Let’s deal with the computer part first. We’ll get to “you” in a bit. There are many factors that affect how long it takes your computer to respond once you’ve assigned it tasks such as opening Photoshop or your web browser. The age of the computer, how much RAM memory it has and how many different programs or utilities that are running simultaneously all weigh in. Let’s start with the most important part of the machine... the RAM. The other critical parts, the CPU and the hard drive are the active, supporting players, but I MUST establish the important role RAM plays. RAM (random access memory) is where the actual “computing” operation takes place, as far as I’m concerned. I always recommend obtaining as much RAM for your pc/laptop/Mac as possible. To illustrate, think of it in “kitchen” terms. We’d all agree it’s all but impossible to cook a large meal in a tiny kitchen. The same thing with computers. The CPU (central processing unit) is the cook, or chef. The “program,” in this case, is a recipe to make a cake. The hard drive is the fridge/pantry (...when they finally make such a thing, but play along if you can). The RAM is the kitchen counter space, which one can never have enough of. So, here we go. Let’s make a computer cake. The recipe (computer program) instructs the chef (CPU) to go to the fridge (hard drive) to take out the eggs and milk and then run to the pantry (another part of the hard drive) to get the flour, mixing pans and Crisco. In computer terms, the program instructs the CPU to read different parts of the hard drive (aka 8

Professional Photographer’s Guild Of The Palm Beaches, Inc. “ingredients”) to find the various program components to assemble into something you see on your screen. All that retrieval and assembly activity is what makes your drive light flicker on your computer. That’s a significant part of the “wait” you experience. Now where does the chef (or CPU) put these items to work on them and make a cake? The kitchen counter, aka the RAM. The chef lays all the ingredients out on the counter for easy and quick access. Mixing bowls, whisk, cake pans, Crisco, flour, milk, eggs, etc. Similarly, the CPU retrieves from the drive all the program portions (photo editing program, the photograph, your printer information, your email, etc.) and lays it all out in the RAM, and then display for you to see and work with. Here’s the problem. What would you think the chef (CPU) would do if there wasn’t enough counter space to work with, other than use French words? The chef would certainly start growling, run back to the fridge (harddrive) and reluctantly put the mixes away temporarily so there was room on the counter for the next task, like preparing the baking pans. Back to the PC: if there’s not enough RAM, the CPU must put some stuff (let’s say your Photoshop menu layout, for instance) temporarily back on the harddrive to make room in RAM for the next task such as displaying a web page and your email. Time consuming. If, on the other hand, there’s enough RAM, then there’s enough room to keep it ALL laid out in one location and process as needed, without much running back to the harddrive which takes time and makes your finger tap on the desk. Similarly for our chef, if there’s enough counter space, the chef can keep all the mixed and in-process ingredients on the counter in front of him without constantly having to run back to the fridge or pantry for more stuff, and, incidentally, makes the chef a much happier person to work with. All that running back and forth to the fridge or pantry (read: your harddrive) slows the chef down. On your computer you see it as the light blinking, the spinning wheel on the Mac, or the rat-race blue circle on the PC screen. Not having enough RAM to lay out the computer’s program slows the PC down because it’s having to use the harddrive for spare, temporary storage space. THIS IS WHY RAM IS CRITICAL. To add to that issue, some programs are pretty lousy housekeepers. It is pretty well known that Photoshop and Acrobat for instance, both made by Adobe, are still sibling rivals. They fight for critical RAM space and don’t give back what they’ve occupied in RAM, even if they don’t need it any more, to wit: “MOM...JIMMY WON’T MOVE BACK OVER TO HIS PART OF THE CAR SEAT!!!” The remedy? Mom & Dad turn the car right around and go home (the first definition of “reboot,” I think). The moral to the story is this...when you buy your machine, especially one of those all-in-one units like the iMac, get plenty of RAM, as much as you can afford. You won’t regret it. All of the 64-bit programs are “tuned” to use at least 4gb of RAM, but are really efficient with whatever your computer maximum allows. Back to our “you or the computer” question. It’s a known fact that the more important the job is, the longer the PC takes to respond. Or the closer you are to a deadline or the client showing up...same deal. Computer gremlins know this and act accordingly. After 35 years dealing with them, I’m convinced computer gremlins are sick little twerps.

January Program: Hybird Photography What is “Hybrid Photography” and how can it improve your bottom line? Our January program speakers Betty Huth and Ed Booth will be sharing how they are using “Hybrid Photography” to bring in an all-new client base and revenue stream. Betty and Ed will be explaining how they use hybrid photography which is a blend of still images mixed with video to create a 30 second email business card. These cards are being used on cell phones and iPads as well as your primary computer. They will walk you through the whole process step by step.

Betty Huth and Ed Booth met while on safari in Africa in 1989. Finding they had the same business philosophy, they decided to start teaching together in 1992 and then open a studio in San Jose, California in 1995. During this time they have presented programs in many foreign countries and the United States. After selling their studio in San Jose, they moved to the Tampa area in July, 2005 to open a new studio. They have received many awards including: Best Photography Business in South Shore-2006 -2013; Best Photography Studio in Brandon 2009-2013; and Certificates of Merit form a variety of charitable organizations.
