NEW LOBBY Creative Design Features: This project applies biophilic design attributes to create a restorative environment for all. This lobby becomes a new entrance because it connects the existing hospital and new extension. The design uses skylight and unique ceiling lights to define the new boundaries between new and old.

In 1960, Pierre Koenig completed his magnificently situated 2,200 sq. ft. house for the Stahl family on top of Hollywood Hill in Los Angeles. This project reconfigures the Stahl House for the future living. I believe that multigenerational living will be a solution for the future. The ground floor is for socialization as well as older owner to live. The lower floor, a walk-out basement, is intended for the younger owners of the house.

CONCEPT: A JOURNEY THROUGH A CHILD-FRIENDLY PATIENT ROOM A child-friendly patient room is a new model to embrace family members’ experience and accommodate their special needs. It is a cohesive environment for the adult patient and his/her family. To facilitate a more pleasant healthcare experience, empowerment design features are introduced to the foot wall of the patient zone as well as the family zone of the patient room. Family members can experience a vivid, inspiring and meaningful journey accompanying the patient during his or her stay. It is not “home-like” but it is “home-feel”.

RESEARCH & DESIGN Dining for Older Adults Thesis, 2016
OVERALL DESIGN OF THE “BACK DINING ROOM”
The aim of my thesis is to analyze how the visual characteristics of an interior space can influence subjective perception of noise loudness and annoyance in older adults. The interior spaces provide environments with biophilic design and auditory features of a dining place. Data are collected by conducting visual and audiovisual experiments though person-to person interviews. Data were analyzed through content analysis, ANOVA and correlation techniques (SPSS). Finally, this study develops comprehensive guidelines for designing a person-centered biophilic space for older adults basing on the results of this study as well as previous literature. This “Back Room Dining “ redesign project demonstrates the application of the design guidelines. The framework of the guildlines is presented on next page.

“ This elementary school was built in 2010. I was so excited to visit it because it was the first project that designed by myself and has been built. It means a lot to me at the time when I just started my career as a young intern architect! � --Jingfen
The same client found me to design the second elementary school for Tianzhu China. The color and decoration are from the deeply-rooted Tibetan culture. The expanding doorway provides a warm space for children to play in winter. I execute the design from concept phase to construction document independently.

This project is located at Tianzhu, China, a Tibetan community in the arid northern Loess Plateau area. I conducted schematic design. Inspiration Purity and roughness exist in harmony as is apparent from the background. The serene but rugged landscape inspired my design.

INTERIOR DESIGN STUDIO II This studio course introduces lighting and its uses in commercial and residential applications. Topics to be addressed include lighting theory, lighting calculations, lighting design considerations in some commercial spaces and residential spaces, development of reflected ceiling plans, and electrical plans.
Project 1 Examples This is competition project that students design a ceiling mounted light fixture which adds fun and visual delight to the laundry portion of the space while also providing functional lighting. The space is Sit and Spin LaundroCafe, a combination laundromat and cafĂŠ in an urban area. Students are asked to follow an explorative design process shown below, starting with a light bulb and discover pieces as basic forms to construct the fixture.

INTERIOR DESIGN STUDIO II Project 2 Example This project serves as an opportunity to apply gained knowledge to create a functional design for a small, livable workspace combining a personal gallery. The project is an avenue to practice and refine drafting and AutoCAD skills (Visualization 2); and generate a lighting design based on client needs and completion of lighting calculations.
INTERIOR DESIGN STUDIO II Project 3 Example This project is to design a small retail store by researching space allocation and allowances for the display of merchandise, storefront design, circulation and proximity, selection of display fixtures and furniture, and selection of materials and finishes to maximize the merchandise selling and advertisement of the brand. Lighting is also a key design component in a store that focuses a viewer’s attention on merchandise. Students use sensory approach to design. Students also learn environment psychology as well as atmospheric theory in design process.
“SAVORY” describes sensation when tasting salt. The name also representsthefeaturesoftheproducts that is giving just perfect sensation and feel to human bodies. The interiors tend to create an illusion of infinity of multiple sensations.

INTERIOR DESIGN STUDIO III This studio course introduces interior construction. Topics to be addressed include wood and light gauge metal framing, construction methods for floors, walls, partitions, ceilings, and architectural woodwork. In this studio, students also develop a residential project and an assisted living facility for older population.
Project 1 Residential The purpose of this project is to apply the student’s knowledge of residential design to create a functional design for residential spaces. Another goal of this project is understanding and applying knowledge of construction and detailing to develop construction details for the house. By using three dimensional tools to construct the house, the student will fully understand construction details of building elements.
INTERIOR DESIGN STUDIO III Students must learn about issues pertinent to the potential client for the specific project, and develop an appropriate concept and design solution. These solutions are presented via computer-aided drafting and 3D modeling software that includes plans, elevations, sections, perspective renderings, interior partition details, construction details of millwork, schedules and presentation boards to communicate design intent.
Project Two Design for Aging The purpose of this project is to apply the student’s knowledge of design for aging population to create a functional design for seniors in assisted living setting. This studio works with different clients each year. Students are encouraged to come up with creative solutions and develop it to construction details level. Students also are required to use Evidence-Based Design approach to support the design decisions. Example One The example below is an existing assisted living building renovation for Bradford Village senior living community in Edmond, Oklahoma. Students conduct client meeting, listen to several design experts , interview the residents and staff, and present to a wide range of jury including clients, residents and staff, architects, public health experts and interior design faculties at the facility.
INTERIOR DESIGN STUDIO III Students conduct research, discuss, document and present on assigned topics that are related to the project. For example, the Design for Aging project includes research topics of assisted Living, skilled nursing, memory care, hospice care, other topics including: Baby Boomer Generation, Generation X, Generation Y

Project Two Design for Aging Example Two Page One The example below is to design a community living center for military veterans at Perry Point, Maryland. The site is a 400-acre project site of 15-acre project footprint sited over one mile of shoreline. The site slopes downward towards the Susquehanna River & Chesapeake Bay providing spectacular views of this natural amenity. Each Student design a Small House and all Small Houses are organized on the site.
INTERIOR DESIGN STUDIO III Project Two Design for Aging Example Two Page Two Students implement the “Green House” or “Small house” concept of care model to create a community that responds to the cultural change occurring in the long-term care industry. Material specifications, FF&E specifications, lighting design and electrical plan also required in this project. In addition to the presentation boards, student also product a set of working drawings in Revit.
GRADUATE STUDIO This studio provides an advanced study in creative problem solving techniques, the application of principles, philosophies, materials, and production of design. Each student will propose and complete their own projects/schedules for the duration of the semester, per instructor’s approval. This allows graduate students to explore subject areas of relevance,interest and benefit to the design community.
Space Making Inspiration
Below is an example of redesigning a woman cloth store. The student studied environmental psychology in design, customer shopping behaviors and their influence in design, materials and lighting in retail. The student also explored to use creative process in design, which uses natural element primarily as inspiration. The inspirations inform space form, textures, color and lighting.

DESIGN FOUNDATIONS, US Student work on the left side is from the design foundation program at the University of Central Oklahoma. The course focused on technical aspects of the elements, principles of 2-dimensional composition and rendering through drawing. The drawing techniques involves graphite, ink, color pencil and water color. Color theory and design principles are also introduced.
Student work on the right is from the core design studio that explored the interaction of two- and three-dimensional design; emphasized Fundamental skills and ideas shared across design disciplines; investigated creative process, visual order and materials; and developed critical thinking through studio projects and lectures.
DESIGN FOUNDATIONS, CHINA This foundation course was given to first-year architecture students in China. It emphasized two- and three-dimensional compositions as well as presentation techniques using ink pen and water colors.
ARCHITECTURE STUDIO, CHINA A fundamental architecture design studio emphasized small scale architectural design. The tasks included site planning, space planning, building structure and material selection, and visual presentation.
The upper drawings are from a residential design project of a house with an area of 4000 square feet. The lower rendering depicts the design of a Chinese architecture school with an area of 30,000 square feet.
