ABOUT ME I studied urban planning as my undergraduate major at Nanjing Institute of Technology in China. With this major, I learned about how to design buildings, landscape, and design for urban planning. There was so much to learn, but in fact, I wanted to narrow my focus on one of them. After graduating, I did an internship at Nanjing Planning Bureau. At that time, most of my responsibilities involved drawing only CAD pictures, and ultimately I felt I want to learn more. I thought my training at university was not really being utilized. In addition, I needed to pass tests one after another before I could become a Certified Urban Planner, and these were based on how many years I worked in this field. At the same time, I wanted to learn something new because my intern life left me with a lot of free time, and I slowly realized I was more interested in interior design. Being familiar with the Chinese educational system, I decided I wanted to try an American university where more attention is given to students’ individual thinking. Now that I am finishing my studies in interior and architecture design at the Academy of Art University, and I had the opportunity to learn from so many teachers with professional backgrounds. After I graduate I hope to find an internship and eventually a position here in the US.

Office Design

An office is generally a room or other area where administrative work is done, but may also denote a position within an organization with specific duties attached to it. Office space planning describes the methods used to design and arrange office layouts so that staff can work together in departmental and team groupings, providing the best opportunity for efficient work flow, communication and supervision.

TARGET USERS

The TJ Architecture Firm is an architecture design firm in Bay area, and the design team will work in this studio. For architecture, they really need a comfortable and creative environment for working because they usually work really hard and spend a long time to do their job. Architecture always involved a team to finish a project, therefore they also need a comfortable meeting room or a flexible working area to do presentation. In this project, in order to be simple and modern. I chose a fresh color palette and soft materials to create a healthy working environment. Also, I designd a lounge for welcoming their clients, and the lounge will give these designers a space for resting. A library is also important for a designer. Therefore, the lounge and library will be the focal points in the project. SITE ANALYSIS

Site: 75 1st St, San Francisco, CA 94105 SoMa is the cultural nexus of San Francisco, containing major museum district, several art galleries, an eclectic mix of international restaurants, hotels, and theaters. In addition, with its lofts, South Beach high-rise residences, and rundown houses at the neighborhood’s margins; SoMa offers a wide range of options for residents. The creative mix of young people and its proximity to the financial district have also made SoMa an irresistible temptation for tech firms and many mainstream retailers. SoMa is thus a vital, constantly improving neighborhood.

RECEPTION AREA

The first impression of school is the reception area which needs to be professionally designed, functional, professional and stylish. This ensures the importance of the front public area, which sends the right message to the students.

FUNCTIONAL STAIR The center of school is the functional stair. The fuctional stair has two different functions which can walk and sit at the same time. Because of the sky light, the surrounding spaces can be lit without artificial lighting in day time, so that it can save energy. The school mainly uses rectangular shapes to create different function areas. The wooden seating and walking stair provide students with a diverse learning environment.

LEARNING SPACE The design features of the Learning space is like an individual experience in a garden. The colors, textures are inspired by the color of vegetation and make the users feel as if they are in an organic environment, ultimately, creating a sense of being in touch with nature. The learning space provides students with open areas but also provides private areas for individual study.

CLASSROOM My idea for classrooms is that they should be flexible and mobile. Mobility is one of the crucial features for furnitures in a collaborative learning classroom, so I chose the flexible desks and tables to easily combine together. However active learning is not only talking about movement, it is also requires the classroom to make use of analog and digital visual presentation technology.

Retail Design

Retail design is a creative and commercial discipline that combines several different areas of expertise together in the design and construction of retail space. Retail design is primarily a specialized practice of architecture and interior design, however it also incorporates elements of interior decoration, industrial design, graphic design, ergonomics, and advertising.

116

RETAIL DESIGN

SITE LOCATION Westfield Centre, 815 Market St, San Francisco, CA 94102 I want to create a cosemetics store called Galaxy Beauty Store, which will be located on Market Street, San Francisco. It will be located next to Old Navy and just down the street from the Westfield San Francisco City Centre.

Galaxy Beauty

TRANSPORTATION Market Street, San Francisco’s premier street and most important destination, is envisioned to become a more attractive place for people to visit. Despite its attractive design and use of high-quality materials, the sidewalks and public spaces fail to work as gathering places. Great streets have always been more than corridors for movement; they are the civic and cultural centers of cities where people gather to see, learn and participate in a vibrant city life.

117

118

RETAIL DESIGN

BRANDING

Galaxy Beauty

TARGET USERS

Women all over the world over seek lotions, creams and powders to put their best face forward. And throughout the centuries, the desire for beauty products has only grown. Demographics point to a decidedly female market, but that’s pretty much where these individuals’ similarities end. Cosmetic buyers are as diverse as the products they buy. Moisturizers, anti-aging preparations, eye makeup, lip color and more are available as natural or chemical-based products, at virtually every price point, for every skin type, and through every sales channel.

119

120

RETAIL DESIGN

CONCEPT PHILOSOPHY

Galaxy For my design, my concept is the Galaxy. Galaxy is a very abstract thing, and very far from us. We just see them from picture or TV, but it is hard to imagine. Like beauty, it’s very abstract but it's hard to have. For this beauty store, I want to create a futuristic and fancy feeling, so I chose galaxy for my concept. Like I said, galaxy is very abstract, but we are all shocked by its beauty, so I think is very suitable concept for a beauty store.

Galaxy Beauty

Concept Sketch When I think about the Galaxy, I found it have a center in the middle, and each parts have their own pathway, and all move around with a center, so I follow this characteristic to make the floor plan. For this concept, I will use more curve lines and center of radial shape to express the feeling of galaxy.

STORE FRONT

Storefronts should be distinctive from the floors above and allow easy transition from one retailer to another without major structural changes. For this storefront, I followed my concept Galaxy to make the curve lines cut and gold color to make it feel consistent from the interior space.

Hand Sketching

A sketch is a rapidly executed freehand drawing that is not usually intended as a finished work. It recorded and developped ideas for my design process. I made them by marker pen and as a quick way of graphically demonstrating an image, idea or principle.
