Tianjin, the neighbor city of Beijing, has been underpowered by the capital for decades. Over the recent 20 years, Beijing has been undergoing a tremendous expansion and ceaseless construction. The city keeps growing and seeking for underdeveloped areas further away to facilitate large development. As the commuter transit between Beijing and Tianjin becomes more convenient and much faster, many investors shift their focus onto the satellite city, stay close to the center of the country, but cut down so much cost and have larger space for future expansion. It is projected that ten billion dollars will be invested on the new development of Tianjin Binhai Hi-Tech Zone, which is targeted as a strategic hub for technology innovation on a national level. A large amount of technologyoriented enterprises, research institutes and corporate headquarters will come in, so that hotels, restaurants, culture/entertainment facilities, and community district will be planned accordingly to keep it self-sustained.

At this background, Hi-tech Jinling international community is planned to hold more than 9000 residents in this newly developed district. And a commercial street is planned through the site from east to west as an active spine link to a proposed lake in the center close to the community. The architect simply provided a mediocre building layout, nearly identical with most residential development plans in China. In order to break such a mechanical arrangement, landscape design should reorganize the spatial flow and bring in a free spirit to the site. Thus the plain plan could be considered as a canvas; landscape then is a freely painted artwork. To achieve such a loosely and freely painted effect, I took Monet’s artwork as a study model. In his series of water lilies, he continued to represent the nature by paints in attempt to capture natural light and color rather than forming solid objects. His free brushstrokes are so strong that detached from the description of objects, finally became a form of abstract art work themselves. The landscape painting could be read as a composition of layered paints, the fragmented brighter color dance over a dark background. Apply the similar concept to the landscape design; fragmented brushstrokes create a free spatial structure over a green background. Figure and ground ambiguously commingled with each other, and no strong form to dominate the site. Elements, like layered paints, randomly overlaid one another, to get a loose but integrated overall image.

POLY Xi Shan Lin Yu Residential project located on a 17.2-hectare site in the city of Dalian, China. The project is close to the west mountain reservoir and the international tourism and business district in the west of Dalian, which have been great opportunities for the site. The client aimed to develop their first high-end residential community in that area, including villas, multi-storey, high-rise buildings, a commercial street and other public service facilities to accommodate residence in different income levels. Following the current fashion of classical western styles in real estate market, the client also asked for a French landscape design. It is a challenge to both tailor for client taste and interpret a classical design in a contemporary context. After two rounds of design communication with clients, the north-south corridor and the east-west corridor in the north end are identified as the major axes with the most classical French look, and other area could be more simple and flexible. I was at first in charge of the overall concept design, and then focus on the North-south axis and the playground corridor in the later stage. The north-south axis is the spine throughout the site, with a strong geometric and symmetrical layout and a bit rhetorical feature to create a French-garden-like glamour experience. Transitioned from the axis through a geometrical garden, the west-east playground area has a more free form in contrast. Inspired by Baroque patterning, the garden is laid with curved lines and subtle wavy landform in correspondence with the French style concept in an abstract way. The circular pruned tree grove in the west end exemplifies the typical French planting feature.

Dolce Vita residential project is located in Jinshazhou, the core conjunction area between the cities of Guangzhou and Foshan. With mountain in the west side and river in the east, as well as easy access via newly developed subway line, it has exceptional nature advantages and convenient transportation. The developer aims to create a luxuriant dwelling environment, providing a full set of service, including schools, commercial activities, entertainment, and sport facilities. The small portion of the project I was in charge of is the commercial plaza and the sale house, featured with a series of swimming pools in the backyard garden, which will be changed to be a club house after sales period. The initial overall design developed organic forms to better suit with the hilly site condition. To keep consistency, I also applied similar design language, but meanwhile introduce geometric forms to intrude into the wavy background, so as to create such a tension in balance.

As China’s largest real estate developer, Vanke aims to construct a landmark in the center of Changping, the developing suburb of Beijing. WoodsBagot, the architect, came out an interesting design concept: the mall complex could be considered as a stack of gift boxes. Each box is characterized by its interior function, expressed by different materials, textures and lighting conditions. Considering the dominant volume of the architecture mass, landscape needs to take on a humble and low-keyed attitude and provide a backdrop to celebrate the glamour of the building complex. If the architecture mass is a pile of jewelry boxes, then the landscape is the display platform and the elements are the dispersed and hiding jewels.

The landscape elements are considered as jewels. Jewel is mined from a raw stone, and then carved into a polyhedron. Thus the material selection and design details are inspired by this process. The featured planter wall is a reflect of the jewel cutting.

Based on the mutiples of the number 150, the pavers and ground lighting are sized in a numerical system. Various sized pavers are arranged in a way to create a gradually changed patterning with certain subtlety.

The design team has developed a overall landscape plan for Xi’an Electornic Technology University’s new campus, which is located in the univeristy town southeast to the old city of Xi’an. Joined the team at the phases of design developemnt and construction document, I majorly focused on the plot of Academic Complex and complete a full set of design of a outdoor seating furniture as my first constructed project, and then supervised the construction site for 1.5 months. Inspired by modern architecture’s notion developed since 1920s, that a building was no longer to be seen as a box, but formed by supporting structure and freely laid walls; I designed the furniture as a composition of walls intersected vertically and horizontally to create a geometric and architectural look. I first laid two crossing walls, then added up other pieces related to the center cross so as to create three separate functional spaces for different users: to sit face to face, to sit shoulder by shoulder, to read while standing, or even to lay down.

The Mangrove Group ambitiously planned to build a 7 star resort with international influence as a landmark in the center place of Haitang Bay, a newly developed beach area in south Hainan. The property is southeast facing the South Ocean of China, with a strong visual connection to an island close to the coastline. With a total area of 21.6 ha, the project is phased into 4 stages: I, the entrance, conference center and the 120 m boat-like high-rise hotel mixed with commercial and entertainment functions in the center of the resort. II the main axis with a continuous water feature cascading towards the beach, flanked by a series of pools with multiple functions on different levels; a wedding chapel and lawn area; as well as the seafood restaurant. III, the ocean view villas and presidential villa. IV, the SPA villas and private courtyard.

I was mainly in charge of the concept and schematic design of the seafood restaurant area. It is located in the very end of the property on the lowest level, almost without any ocean views. To turn the disadvantage to the merits, I proposed the seafood restaurant as a secluded, inward-looking, and garden-like area, naturally became a “secret island”, in comparison with the center active and open zone. It is characterized by three areas: the outdoor dining zone, the strolling flower garden, and the game lawn.

The outdoor dining area is an extension of the restaurant, with an architectural layout. It is divided by several outdoor chambers, enclosed by linear planters with tall shrubs.

In contrast with the geometric dining zone, the garden area is a fluid and wavy space. The strolling pathway goes along with the subtle landform up and down; and feature seating/shading structures, inspired by seashell and local bamboo handcraft, are integrated with the landform, resting in either quiet sunken area or higher spot with a open view. STATEMENT Conventional object-dominated development and one-way thinking results in insensitive new development and abandoned toxic land after industrial uses. The injured landscape need to be recovered and redeveloped through a new way of planning and design: a landscape process, which can be understood as a framework for future development. Thereby, urban form, including: transportation, urban hydrology, green space and building mass, is the consequence of an ecological design process.
CONTEXT & CHALLENGES The 130 hectare Reiherstieg study area in Wilhelmsburg, Hamburg, Germany is located in the heart of Elbe Island, adjacent to one of the major harbors in Europe. Since harbor activities have moved to the west, the Reiherstieg has been underutilized after past industrialization left it heavily or partially contaminated. Our study area is a former oil refinery that was bombed in 1944 and since then abandoned and fenced to restrict public access. Soils and ground water are contaminated with benzene and other pollutants. There is a low-medium income neighborhood to the east of the site and a large green patch of 50 hectares in the south is designated for the 2013 International Garden Exhibition.

GOAL & CONCEPT The study area demonstrates a new paradigm to catalyze the revitalization of Elbe Island. The goal is to transform the thin and contaminated “drosscape” (waste landscape) into a thickened and vegetated, healthy urban landscape, and bring back an active public realm to a post-industrial region. It could be achieved through the concept – “RhizoTopia”. RHIZOTOPIA It is a combination of two greek words Rhizo, meaning root and Topia meaning place. Phytoremediation, is featured to stabilize, sequester and remove contaminants from soil with plants. The plant roots function as an ecological process to fundamentally solve the problem and bring the new life in the site. Under the rhizotopia concept, specific pollution-tolerant plants including Poplar and Reed are managed as a sequence of phytoremediation stages, ending in a safe, clean environment. Thus the “rhizo” or root system supports a new healthy livable place. Through this process, the ecological processes of “Rhizotopia” are conceived and organized to frame future urban form on the Reiherstieg.

“Phyton� comes from Greek word for plant, now is widely used for the innovative remediation concept by using plants in containminated condition. Plants are able to contain, break down or remove metals, pesticides, explosives, crude oil and various other contaminants from water, soil or air. It is a cost efficient, aestheically enjoyable, nonenvironmentally disruptive and passive, solar-energy driven process. Generally the effectiveness is determined by the soil dynamics, the contaminated concentration and plant types, which requires sitespecific solutions. Various processes have been identified to assist the implementation for different contaminated conditions.

Tree Well The hybrid poplar trees are planted in boreholes spaced 5m apart drilled down to the contaminated aquifer. The root growth could reach approximately 10m deep. The poplars are planted in 0.6 m diameter caisson boreholes lined with plastic sleeves in order to direct the roots exclusively to the main contaminated aquifer. These boreholes were filled with a mixture of topsoil, sand, peat, and manure to promote root growth and tree development. The capillarity of the mixture provides an added benefit of drawing water to where it is available to the young trees. All boreholes are also provided with aeration tubes to ensure a supply of air to the growing roots.

Nantai Island is planned to become the new heart of Fuzhou. The transformation of its 60km waterfront provides the opportunity to reshape urban life for citizens, create an engaging year round open air park that prioritizes people’s well being, and improve riverfront landscape quality. The existing site has a fragmented land use where city life is separated from waterfront by busy roads; people rely on cars for daily life, with environmental degradation increasing. The “Nantai Ring of life” formed a connected, environmentally sound waterfront greenway system with strong recreational experiences that relates to the local context. It includes an eco-recreational driveway, a cycling path, a riverfront promenade, and an ecological landscape corridor that preserves water sensitive areas and connections to city open space network. The loop road is also designed in anticipation of international sport events such as marathons, triathlons and bike racing. The “Ring of Life” is divided into five sections, each with a color theme – lacquer red, water blue, wood yellow, Banyan green and tile violet, highlighting aspects of Fuzhou history, culture and urban context, to represent their unique landscape experience. They are interpreted through material, planting, signage, landscape features and embankment system. Throughout, each citizen can find his lively place in the heart of this rapidly growing metropolis. The “Ring of Life” transforms a 60 km fragmented waterfront into an exemplary multifunctional lifestyle greenway that better integrates the city, enhances the city image and ameliorates the wellbeing of its citizens.

This project is collaborated by multi-offices. As the lead designer in Beijing team, I worked on the west bank of the lake, which has close connection with the former industrial site, including a steel plant, First Thermal Power Plant of Taiyuan, chemical fertilizer plant, etc. These lager enterprises were moved and rebuilt later, resulting industrial heritage relics appearing in a large scale. There physical carriers imply rich culture contents, which are the historical evidence of pre-industrial times, citizens’ life memory, proof of Taiyuan development, as the special industrial and cultural heritage. A public recreation area themed as Memory City connecting west bank of Jinyang Lake and industrial Heritage Sector will continue industrial landscape and reflects the site history, preserves the precious heritage resource as well.

Jinyang Lake, located in Taiyuan, is a major new green infrastructure project that will be an anchor for the future expansion of the city center and a major component of a new green network within the city. The 895 hectare site is located adjacent to a former industrial district. The existing 427 hectare man-made lake, created to support nearby factories, will be converted into a regional waterfront park and is part of a major effort to transform Taiyuan from the most polluted city in China to a showcase for green urbanism. The 13.3 kilometer-long waterfront provides a wide spectrum of recreational and cultural activities, serving as a regional landscape destination and an important open space amenity for local residents. An adaptive design approach has been taken, focusing on preserving and amplifying existing landscape assets to create a new design that celebrates the special qualities of the site.

Wind Through Woods
The pedstrian bridge, set within the landform, provides a natural connection over the dividing road. The bridge takes a fluid shape moving through the man-made mound, as a spring breeze through woods. The canopy coming up from the ground alternates from side to side to direct and frame the views of the landscape. It ends up with a double leveled deck, a viewing platform and a shelter underneath.

Steve and Xinwei, the Christian couple, began their foster work near Beijing in 2001, and then moved to a rural area in Linyi, Shandong province in 2009, due to some policy reasons. They started building up a new foster home to accommodate abandoned orphans with various disabilities from the ground up, named Mephibosheth’s village. Mephibosheth, a character in Hebrew Bible, is a grandson of Saul, the first king of Israel and Judah. He was dropped and became disabled when fled with his nurse after the death of Saul in a battle. David, anointed as the new king, found him, and brought him to live and eat with him as a family. “Mephibosheth” symbolizes those disabled and undesired, should be equally treated and have meaningful life as the others. Steve and Xinwei accept children whose problems do not fit the remedies offered by the government or other NGOs, the undesired and helpless ones. They used to have up to 50 orphans in Shandong, and then had to transfer most of them to Henan due to policy reasons in 2013, where they cooperated with a local private hospital. There are currently about 10 children in Shandong, more than 80 children in Henan. About 70-80% of the children have cerebral palsy; some of them have Dawn’s syndrome, heart disease, autism, visual issues, etc. They believe with therapeutic treatment and special devices, the disabled can be enabled to manage their personal life, communication, travelling and do so much more things than we could ever imagine. Therefore Steve, the founder, builder and designer of this place, envisions it as a therapeutic resort or camp for the disabled orphans, helpless families with disabled kids, and even to help the problem adolescents through their voluntary service for the little ones. Currently the 3.12 ha site has three completed residential buildings for the orphans, the staff and the Steve’s with a moderate American south-west style, seamlessly fit into the environment. There is a big greenhouse, a workshop, a goat barn, several dog houses, a chicken shed and a facility house. The main playground and the fourth house are under construction. Steve is not a trained designer, but well constructed and shaped the site naturally one step after another. Most of the design is done on site, without much paper drawings. I started coming to the site since 2010 and visited them a couple of times annually, mostly as a consultant for the ongoing site design. And I organized a team about 10 colleagues and applied for Asia’s Time Bank (a company project to allocate amount of office hours for volunteer projects) for them to survey the site and collect information and reference for the further design. And then I spent a month in 2012 and two months in 2014 to help design the fourth building and the other part of the playground. Jun 2009

Revised Design Bedrooms are in the outer space with big windows to get more sunlight, the central dark area is utilized as media room/library/storage, and add in a stair atrium as a public space, vertical corridor and skylight.
