PORTFOLIO JINGLE SLASH CHEN
PREFACE I’m a 20-year-old girl currently studying, working and living it up in Melbourne, Australia. A self-confessed archinerd, avid tea drinker, fitness-freak & lover of Gwen Stefani. This is a portfolio of selected architectural works from the Bachelor of Environments degree at The University of Melbourne from 2012-2014. I’m interested in phenomenology, creating unique spaces, material experimentation, minimalist interiors & how architecture can be used to change society. I am currently on the hunt for a junior position in an architecture firm where I can learn the ropes from professionals in the industry. If you are able to offer me a position, I would love to hear from you!

THE OUTRE GALLERY Studio Fire Semester 2, 2014 Tutor: Mikel Roman
The concept for the Outre Gallery is to create a multi-dimensional, multi-functional space which incorporates the gallery’s philosophy. The site is located at a busy intersection in Brunswick. Inspired by modernist cubist artworks, geometrical shapes and the contrast between horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines is explored through the language. The three suspended floors create cross-connecting views from across the platforms, reinforcing the idea of observing art from a multitude of angles.CONCEPT DIVIDE BLOCK INTO HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL PLANES ADD AND SUBTRACT VOLUMES DIAGONAL SLASHES TO CREATE OPENINGS
Concept Diagram showing how a cube is sliced to produce an angled form and slashed diagonally to produce windows
Inspiration: Kandinsky & artwork from the Bauhaus movement. The composition of different geometrical shapes and lines were particularly influential.

ELECTROLYTE (REDOX COUPLE)
Our design transforms the site Refshaleøen into a place of clean energy generation through a series of greenhouses which use dye-sensitized photo-voltaic cells to produce energy. The forms are influenced by the energy production process with the flowy shapes optimized to produce the most energy. The project aims to educate users about the beauty of clean energy production.

SCHLEMMERSTAFFEL The University of Stuttgart Winter Intensive Studio, 2014 The University of Stuttgart In collaboration with Jay Cheong
This studio was completed in one week whilst on exchange in Germany at the University of Stuttgart. The brief was to design an outdoor recreation centre at the Sunderstaffel (Sinner’s stairs) site in Stuttgart, Germany. We incorporated the concept of fitness and the artwork of Oskar Schlemmer, a native Stuttgart-born artist who was involved with the cubist art movment. He incorporates the concepts of the perfectly proportioned body functioning as architecture, and the contrast between organic forms of the human body and rectilinear forms in his paintings. We wanted to introduce irregularity and break the linearity of the existing stairs. We proposed a series of circles, semicircles and quadrants which represents the functions of different body parts. Together, they form a whole.
Analytical Sketches of Oskar Schlemmer’s ‘Bauhaus Stairway’ 1932, and ‘Tanzerin’ 1923, which inspired the plan of the design

THE BUOY AT STUDLEY PARK Studio Water Semester 2, 2013 Tutor: Nafiseh Hamidi
The brief was to design a boathouse inspired by the modernist design philosophy of Mies van der Rohe. The site is located on the steep hills adjacent to the Yarra River, in Studley Park, Kew. My boathouse design incorporates the formal rules used by the master, Mies van der Rohe including the ideas of linearity/horizontality, regular geometry and straight lines, cantilevering, the blurring of interior amd exterior spaces and open plan living areas.

PAPER LANTERN Virtual Environments Semester 2, 2012 Tutor: Jessica Chidester The aim was to create a wearable paper lantern using parametric tools. I wasinspired by the undulating forms produced by the turbulence of ink when it hits water. The result is an organic, twisted form, triangulated with a gradient of openings and fins to filter and direct light Analytical Sketches showing the movement of ink in water
